[arch-dev-public] Mono release 2.8 with major changes is coming (soon)

Hi, I know that many of you don't use mono, but anyway a new major release is coming with some changes which may affect packages which depends on mono. I have read the changelog draft of mono 2.8 (you can find it here: http://mono-project.com/Release_Notes_Mono_2.8) and there are some significant changes, like the removing of .NET 1.1 profile. Normally that shouldn't be a problem, because most applications are using .NET 2.0 profile and not the old 1.1, but who knows if some applications using the old one. If an application uses the old 1.1 profile it will be automatically switched to the 2.0 profile and a warning should appear. Seven old and deprecated libraries will be removed from the mono release, to be precisly: * ByteFX.Data * Mono.Data * Microsoft.JScript and Microsoft.Vsa * FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird * Mono.Data.SybaseClient * Mono.Data.SqliteClient Mono 2.8 will ship a new garbage collector (SGen), I will activate it by default. You can change that by setting an environment variable (information will follow at release day). The new release includes 4 new libraries from Microsoft directly, they are licensed und MS-PL or Apache 2 Open Source Licenses, so that shouldn't be a problem for us. Another critical change will be the ThreadPool behavior. This has been changed and will potentially break existing applications. I have written in my "Away" email that you can update my packages, but please DO NOT UPDATE the mono packages during my vacation. I will update mono after my vacation (if it will be released in that time). As always I try to do the update as smooth as possible, but this time there are some real big changes in the new release which may not "allow" this. Sorry for the long email and such specific information about the new mono release, but I think it's necessary for such a major release. -Daniel

Hi all, as you should know I have prepared the update to the new version of FluxBB. This is now mostly done except some minor adjustments to the configurable main menu. I have put a rough plan on my user page at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/User:Pierre I have tested this locally and it is more or less painless. The only problem I see is that the update script is quite inefficient; so the forums will be down for an hour or longer. Should we pick a special date here? I'd also need someone who is more familiar with the apache config to alter the permission for some files. Some additional notes: * I didn't get a response from the guy with the duplicate account yet * Obviously some previous migrations failed so I need to cleanup the database schema. There is a strange problem though: all links are underlined if you are logged in. I don't see this effect locally or on wiki.archlinux.de with the same wiki. Did I miss anything? I'm sure that some of you have noticed that I haven't been around quite as much as normal lately. Finally decided that it was time to officially notify you all that I'm sorta inactive for the next week or two. I say 'sorta inactive' because I'm not marking myself inactive (I'll still be here and likely will still be working, and I'll definitely still be on IRC and able to support my PKGBUILD.com users), but I won't have too much time available for rebuilding packages/fixing bugs. I recently took over as CTO and head designer for a social media integration and corporate branding company and the process of settling in and interviewing for the few positions we currently have open is proving extremely time-intensive. I suspect the candidate I interviewed today will be hired on and this will decrease my workload significantly (once she gets past the training and tests). I'm estimating one to two weeks before things have settled down enough for me to consider myself 'back'. In the meantime, please feel free to screw around with my out of date packages and associated bugs.

Tier1 mirrors don't sync ftpfull. The difference of ftpfull is that it includes other and archive directories. I don't think there is a need for mirrors to sync it. There is no point in syncing archive directory, it is permanently frozen. Since you already have it - you can just exclude it from rsync process. The other directory contains some sources and patches that have no other official place to be taken from. There's not much point in mirroring it if you don't mirror the sources. Besides ftp.archlinux.org both other and sources directories are available at mirrors.kernel.org/archlinux/ @devs: do you agree with my points above? @Olivier: I suggest you to pick one of tier1 mirrors as the upstream. If absolutely you want to sync other and sources directories then you can use rsync://mirrors.nl.eu.kernel.org/archlinux/ (as mentioned above: to keep archive - just exclude it from sync) In any case please let me know which upstream you will use so that our db can be updated. -- Roman Kyrylych (Роман Кирилич)

Today the rsync access on rsync.archlinux.org was disabled for all mirrors that have not moved to 2-tier scheme. There have been way too much time for any mirror to switch to tiered scheme, I wrote a personal email to every admin who has a known email address, but still more than half of all mirrors either sync directly from archlinux.org or from unknown upstream. Those who are not tier2 either don't have a known contact address, or do not respond. So it is completely reasonable to shut down access for such mirrors. pacman-mirrorlist needs to be updated to reflect the change, however I don't know how to better automate this. Possibilities: * mark all untiered mirrors as inactive (this will mess with other "really inactive" mirrors, but those "really inactive" could be removed completely IMO) * change generation of pacman-mirrorlist to skip Untiered db records What do you think, Dan? -- Roman Kyrylych (Роман Кирилич)

Hi guys, Yesterday I had bug report on a segfaulting binary for x86_64 that ships with texlive-bin in testing: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/20199 I have reported the bug upstream: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=3031498&group_id=145640&at… and as suspected it turned out to be a bug with gcc 4.5: http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=45008 Now this means I have no means to include a working binary of dvisvgm for x86_64 in texlive-bin until that bug is resolved, since I cannot rely on gcc 4.4.x and no patch is available... What is the procedure you guys follow is such situations? F

I just performed the switch to https only on bbs! I also adjusted some internal URLs, so all files will be properly fetched via https directly. http is redirected automatically. Note that the navbar links on Archweb and all other sites still point to http, but that is redirected automatically. There is a catch: 1) Apache configures SSL per-vhost. That means that even though we have a wildcard certificate, the browser must support SNI for name-based vhosts to work. All clients that are not SNI-capable will be redirected to www instead. 2) wget doesn't like wildcard certificates. That means you need to use --no-check-certificate with wget. 3) Our certificate is from CACert. AFAIK, this is not included in many browsers by default. If you use Arch Linux, at least everything that uses the OpenSSL certificate store and all Mozilla browsers are CACert-enabled - on other operating systems, our certificate might show up as untrusted. Let me know if any of the above (especially 1) cause any problems.

Currently extra/scons-1.3.0-1 is marked out-of-date, which is probably due to the fact that since last month, version 2 has become the stable branch upstream. From http://www.scons.org: "14 June 2010 SCons production release 2.0.0.final.0 is now available from the download page at SourceForge. This is the production release for the 2.0 series. The 2.0 series drops support for all pre-2.4 versions of Python. See the ChangeLog for a complete list of changes in the release." Version 1 is still supported, as evidenced by the development branch updates: "26 June 2010 SCons release 1.3.0.d20100626 is now available from the download page at SourceForge. Fix the ability to append to default $*FLAGS values (which are implemented as CLVar instances) in a copied construction environment without affecting the original construction environment's value. See the ChangeLog for a complete list of changes in the release." Hi guys Attn: Pierre/Andrea/KDE maintainers There has been no request so far for this feature, and google-gadgets-* have less than 0.5% usage according to pkgstats (but it was brought into community due to a good number of votes). Currently kdebase-workspace has -DWITH_Googlegadgets=OFF so I don't think there'd be any complication enabling this (as long as google-gadgets-qt exists). It was an illusion to simply use the linux-firmware git tree and hope all firmware is there. So, I added a symlink for an unnecessarily versioned firmware (the firmware binaries are compatible, yet the kernel hardcodes a specific firmware version) and a missing atheros firmware that is only present in an oudated version. Only one fix: The initial /etc/mtab is now properly generated using findmnt if /sbin/findmnt and /proc/self/mountinfo are present. This requires util-linux-ng 2.18-2 or newer to work properly. It falls back to copying /proc/mounts (which is problematic) otherwise. Please sign off.

Hey guys, I rolled out some more changes to the main site tonight, and one of them is pushing all news content through markdown. For the most part, our old news articles can cope with this just fine. I went back and touched up some of the more recent articles to make sure they looked and read fine, but you may notice stuff from pre-2010 looking a little funky. Feel free to hit "edit" and make the necessary changes to fix them up as it takes all of about 15 seconds if you see something not looking great. Let me know if you have any questions or see any problems. -Dan

Util-linux-ng 2.18 Release Notes ================================ The util-linux-ng package does not contain rdev(8), ramsize(8), vidmode(8) and rootflags(8) anymore. The fdisk(8) command does not use DOS-compatible mode and cylinders as display units by default. The old deprecated DOS behavior could be enabled by 'c' and 'u' fdisk commands or from command line by '-c=dos -u=cylinders' options. Release highlights ------------------ libmount: - this NEW LIBRARY is designed to be used in low-level utils like mount(8) and /sbin/mount.<type> helpers as well as in some other projects. - the library API is still officially unstable. The library provides fstab, mtab and mountinfo parser, routines for work with parsed data and mount options, mtab locking, etc. The high-level API for mount(2) is planned for the next major release. Is there any reason why we include a patch in util-linux-ng to build a static version of fsck? Note that this binary is completely useless: fsck only calls fsck.$FSTYPE which is not a static binary for any file system.

Upstream update. Major changes between sudo 1.7.2p8 and 1.7.3: * Support for logging I/O for the command being run. For more information, see the documentation for the "log_input" and "log_output" Defaults options in the sudoers manual. Also see the sudoreplay manual for how to replay I/O log sessions. * The use_pty sudoers option can be used to force a command to be run in a pseudo-pty, even when I/O logging is not enabled. * On some systems, sudo can now detect when a user has logged out and back in again when tty-based time stamps are in use. Supported systems include Solaris systems with the devices file system, Mac OS X, and Linux systems with the devpts filesystem (pseudo-ttys only). * On AIX systems, the registry setting in /etc/security/user is now taken into account when looking up users and groups. Sudo now applies the correct the user and group ids when running a command as a user whose account details come from a different source (e.g. LDAP or DCE vs. local files). * Support for multiple 'sudoers_base' and 'uri' entries in ldap.conf. When multiple entries are listed, sudo will try each one in the order in which they are specified. * Sudo's SELinux support should now function correctly when running commands as a non-root user and when one of stdin, stdout or stderr is not a terminal. * Sudo will now use the Linux audit system with configure with the --with-linux-audit flag. * Sudo now uses mbr_check_membership() on systems that support it to determine group membership. Currently, only Darwin (Mac OS X) supports this. * When the tty_tickets sudoers option is enabled but there is no terminal device, sudo will no longer use or create a tty-based ticket file. Previously, sudo would use a tty name of "unknown". As a consequence, if a user has no terminal device, sudo will now always prompt for a password. * The passwd_timeout and timestamp_timeout options may now be specified as floating point numbers for more granular timeout values. * Negating the fqdn option in sudoers now works correctly when sudo is configured with the --with-fqdn option. In previous versions of sudo the fqdn was set before sudoers was parsed.

[arch-dev-public] Policy on cross-repo makedepends?

Do we have a policy on cross-repo makedepends? i.e. using makedepends in [extra] for packages in [core]. I ask because I want to bring dejagnu to [extra] so I can do "make check" for gcc/binutils/etc in their PKGBUILD. (I currently do it myself using a local dejagnu package). I would just go ahead do it, but our integrity check script list makedepends repo hierarchy amongst the list of issues. Allan

Hi all, I have updated the nvidia driver to 256.35. Their installer seems to be still unusable so we have to do it on our own. I rewrote the PKGBUILD to make this easier. The new defaults in makepkg more aggressively strip shared libraries. Doing this for certain libraries in glibc causes gdb breakage so all file stripping must be done manually. Also, grab the latest from the glibc-2.12 branch as it contains a couple of new bugfixes. Signoff both, Allan

I have tested them with the following procedure: * created ./testing/{staging,myrepo,packages,package-cleanup}/ with necessary subdirs * modified config to point to these paths * commented out all the SVN malarky in db-add/db-remove/ftpdir-cleanup/etc * changed get_repos_for_host() to return "myrepo" Testing: * Add a package to myrepo - Package file in packages/os/*/ - Relative symlink in myrepo/os/*/ - In myrepo DB * Remove package from repo 'foo' - Removed from myrepo DB * Run cron-jobs/ftpdir-cleanup - Symlink is removed from myrepo/os/*/ - Package file moved from packages/os/*/ to package-cleanup/ Anyone else want to verify this, or should I push it to master? Aside: Would it be a good idea to add a "svn" function which could: a) handle svn checkout failures (we don't, right now) b) be easily switched out for dry-run style testing

I'd like to do some maintenance operations on our SVN packages repository on gerolde at some point (svn-packages). The format is still that from the 1.4.X series and we can make it a lot more efficient and get some space savings by doing either an in place upgrade and modification (easier but not preferred) or by doing a dump/load into the new format. In order to do this though, I need to make the repository temporarily unavailable for everyone for however long this takes. I don't foresee it taking more than 4 or so hours from start to finish. Does anyone have any objections with me doing this sometime tonight, e.g. 22nd June from 3 AM UTC - 7 AM UTC? -Dan

So we have multi-arch split package support in Makepkg now. Question is: how will commitpkg and our dbscripts handle this?

Hi DEVs/TUs, this new version has been split into boost-libs and boost. Now boost is a makedepends and boost-libs a depends. If you rebuild a package that is not yours, please check to see if a new upstream version is available, mostly to be compatible with boost >1.41. encfs and schroot is two that comes in my head right now. Others, please test it and let me know via bugtracker if we have any problems with the new boost. i know there was a problem with gcc 4.5 but every patch that i found, is already applied in this version. -- Ionuț

You should upgrade and test these together (don't forget to regenerate initramfs when you're upgraded). The new udev should work without the new initscripts and mkinitcpio, but udev-based network device renaming will fail in that case. udev is an upstream update with mostly bugfixes, but some changes in behaviour. Most importantly, NAME= rules are being ignored now, you can not change the kernel's predefined device name anymore. initscripts changes: Dan McGee (1): Include _netdev option in NETFS list when calling fsck Thomas Bächler (2): Only mount /proc, /sys and /dev if they haven't been mounted already, use devtmpfs instead of tmpfs if supported by the kernel Add --action=add to udevadm trigger mkinitcpio changes: Thomas Bächler (5): Do not umount /proc and /sys before switch_root, but mount --move them into the real root Mount tmpfs or (if supported) devtmpfs on /dev, move it into the real root before switch_root udev hook: Add --action=add to udevadm trigger udev hook: Add ata_id, path_id, scsi_id and usb_id to allow complete persistent storage rules Release 0.6.5 For the future, we now fully support devtmpfs. It is recommended (but not required (yet)) by upstream. Using devtmpfs gets rid of a small number of race conditions. I tested devtmpfs on a custom kernel, and with the exception of one short (and harmless) error message (mknod: /dev/rtc0: device exists), it works fine. Getting rid of that error message requires further consideration, as we can fix a bug with some custom kernel configurations at the same time if we do it right. For now, I will ignore this and please ask for testing and signoffs.

Look at the return code, and as a bonus, use the more correct communicate() rather than stdout.read(). Hi all, I wrote a simply redirector script for fun*. It uses geoip to redirect you to a random Arch mirror in your country; but only if that mirror has synced within the last 24h. It is located at https://downloads.archlinux.de/ So you can for example download an iso using this URL: https://downloads.archlinux.de/iso/2010.05/archlinux-2010.05-netinstall-i68… or simply redirect to a dir like https://downloads.archlinux.de/iso/ It's probably not that useful and don't even think about using that url in pacman. It will redirect you to a random mirror on every request no matter if that mirror is up or has this file. (also pacman doesn't seem to handle https; but once could use the curl xfer command (wget has poor https support too)) However, a possible usage might be to use this for simpler iso download. Hi, The coreutils-i18n patch we currently use adds some extra support for multibyte characters. However, the patch is entirely unsupported upstream. I currently rely on the Fedora maintainer to fix any issues that are found and to update it for each release. He also finds that patch a nightmare. So the question is, should we remove that patch? It is not acceptable by the usual Arch patching rules given it is not supported upstream, but it does provide better multibytle locale support (subject to it working...). Removing the patch will probably result in a few regressions with multibyte locales, but we can then take those issues upstream. Any opinions on this? Allan

Creating the RTC device will result in an error if devtmpfs is used, as it already exists after loading the module. The new code skips the mknod if the device is already present. Additionally to rtc-cmos, we now also try to load rtc and genrtc, as some custom kernels use the "old" misc RTC device instead of the newer RTC class. In this case, the created device is also different. Commit 95986ec3 attempted to fix handling of optdepends with descriptions, but it only affected the PKGBUILD parser. Do the description stripping in the package building code in namcap proper so we can handle all varieties of packages, whether from a PKGBUILD, the database, or a package file. The original fix is reverted as part of this commit, and this fixes FS#18259. I uploaded the new syslinux 4.00 release candidate to testing. Most important change is that the filesystem code has been entirely rewritten in C, and extlinux now supports ext4 and btrfs. Two perl modules and mtools have been moved from depends to optdepends.

First of all, I don't want initscripts to strongly depend on an up-to-date udev (although that would be a minor problem). Even if we ignore that, we need some devices in /dev/ before launching udevd, at least /dev/null. If we would force devtmps instead of tmpfs, that problem would be gone too. For now, I decided to leave the cp command in there, we can always remove it later.

A lot of projects include a "check" target in their makefiles. Right now, we don't use these checks and just upload a package after compiling it, sometimes even without a runtime test. I would propose to add checks to important packages. Examples include glibc, glib2, cairo, MySQL, Mozilla stuff and more. Running make check can result in better package quality. Upstream usually runs these tests before releasing, but they don't test every possible combinations of packages that a distribution ships. To implement this, I would propose to have some kind of check function inside the PKGBUILD, which can be called by makepkg if "check" is in the options array. Other option is to include make check inside the build() function, but that will make it non-optional. This package checking stuff could get implemented in an automatic build bot in the future. Not only will that build bot detect packages which don't build anymore, but it will also detect regressions caused by package updates. A package like xulrunner or firefox could pass the check without errors on package upload, but it could break after updating cairo or gtk2 for example.

While I was changing my nfs server from NFSv3 to NFSv4 I've found our user mapping broken. Before idmapd gets started we need to make sure nfsd module is loaded. If the module is not loaded all files are mapped to nobody the guest account. We load it in the nfs-common init script now. I went ahead today and made some nice git snapshots of libdrm, mesa and xorg-server. After updating these components, my Intel "GPU" would still freeze with Nexuiz. After looking at Fedora, I found a patch in their CVS that disables pageflipping, a feature introduced in the 2.11 driver, but far from ready. Please give these new packages some testing. Besides correct documentation about the new input hotplugging, I think most things have been taken care of now. After inspecting our documentation and making corrections where required, I think it's time to move this to extra.

I put updated device-mapper/lvm2 2.02.66 and cryptsetup 1.1.1 packages to testing. These packages enable udev synchronization to finally get rid of all race conditions related to udev rules. I also cleaned up the PKGBUILDs massively and removed all static binaries and libraries from the packages. Dynamic lvm and cryptsetup now run entirely from /{bin,lib}, without the need for /usr. Hi guys, i wanted to fix FS#16802 which is about newusers and chpasswd utilities from shadow. Even the fix is available in bugtracker, i'm not quite sure if we have this bug because something got changed upstream. I've found out that we are using a custom default pam module for about all except one and that in shadow source they provide in etc/pam.d some configuration. I don't know the history of the arch package and why we are using custom configs and i've found that any other distribution out there doesn't have this bug that we have. So my worries are that we kinda package shadow very badly. So anyone know why we are using that custom config? Anyone know how to fix shadow? Personally i don't know a thing about it. -- Ionut

As a followup to a discussion on [arch-general] in the Linux 2.6.34 thread ([1] and others), I think we should do the following: - Create a linux-firmware package from the linux-firmware.git tree. - Make that package conflict and replace all other firmware that it obsoletes: replaces=('kernel26-firmware' 'ar9170-fw' 'iwlwifi-1000-ucode' 'iwlwifi-3945-ucode' 'iwlwifi-4965-ucode' 'iwlwifi-5000-ucode' 'iwlwifi-5150-ucode' 'iwlwifi-6000-ucode' 'rt2870usb-fw' 'rt2x00-rt61-fw' 'rt2x00-rt71w-fw') All other firmware packages contain only files that are not part of linux-firmware. - Remove the firmware from the kernel26 PKGBUILD, only use the linux-firmware package instead I'm putting a package with the according conflicts/replaces to testing. Hi all, Looking at #19494[1], anyone knows if we should include those firmwares or not? Giovanni maintains it, but he is a bit busy in this period (==inactive). I do not know what are ours policies about firmware/wireless driver inclusions (btw, I use a package from AUR for my wireless card and I'd like to package it). Hi bump to latest version, Version 0.18 - May 2010 * Runtime behaviour: - On MacOS X and Windows systems, <libintl.h> now extends setlocale() and newlocale() so that their determination of the default locale considers the choice the user has made in the system control panels. - On MacOS X systems, the gettext()/dgettext()/... functions now respect the locale of the current thread, if a thread-specific locale has been set. * PO file format: There is a new field 'Language' in the header entry. It denotes the language code (plus optional country code) for the PO file. This field can be used by automated tools, such as spell checkers. It is expected to be more reliable than looking at the file name or at the 'Language-Team' field in the header entry. msgmerge, msgcat, msgen have a new option --lang that allows to specify this field. Additionally, msgmerge fills in this new field by looking at the 'Language-Team' field (if the --lang option is not given). * xgettext and PO file format: For messages with plural forms, programmers can inform the translators about the range of possible values of the numeric argument, like this: /* xgettext: range: 0..15 */ This information 'range: 0..15' is stored in the PO file as a flag attached to the message. Translators can produce better translations when they know that the numeric argument is small. * Colorized PO files: msgattrib, msgcomm, msgconv, msgen, msgfilter, msggrep, msginit, msgmerge, msgunfmt, msguniq, xgettext now have options --color and --style, like msgcat has since version 0.17. * msgmerge is up to 10 times faster when the PO and POT files are large. This speedup was contributed by Ralf Wildenhues. * msgcmp has a new option -N/--no-fuzzy-matching, like msgmerge has since version 0.12. * msgfilter now sets environment variables during the invocation of the filter, indicating the msgid and location of the messge being processed. * xgettext now can extract plural forms from Qt 4 programs. The recommended xgettext command-line options for this case are: --qt --keyword=tr:1,1t --keyword=tr:1,2c,2t --keyword=tr:1,1,2c,3t * xgettext --language=GCC-source now recognizes also the format strings used in the Fortran front-end of the GCC compiler, and marks them as 'gfc-internal-format'. * autopoint can now be used to update several PO directories all together. * PO mode changes: - PO files with plural entries are now correctly handled. - Editing a message with previous msgid (in comments) removes these comments. Contributed by Noritada Kobayashi. * The po/Makevars file has a new field MSGMERGE_OPTIONS, that can be used to adjust msgmerge's operation. * The use of the macro AM_GNU_GETTEXT without 'external' argument and the --intl option of the gettextize program are deprecated and will be removed in the next release. Instead of including the intl sources in your package, we suggest making the libintl library an (optional) prerequisite of your package. * Updated the meaning of 'gcc-internal-format' to match GCC 4.3. * Installation options: The configure options --without-cvs and --with-git can be used to specify whether 'autopoint' will use the 'cvs' program, or the 'git' program, or none at all. Can I make a request to please file a bug report about these rather than just fixing the md5sums. In this case it looks like that package was recompressed after release without any actual changes (the file creation date is a month after release...), but I have seen stupid upstream people make a quick bugfix and replace the tarball hoping no-one has used the previous tarball. Especially in the later case, it is important the maintainer checks why the checksum differs from what they use to build the package. Hi bump to latest version, Changes from 3.1.7 to 3.1.8 --------------------------- 1. The zero flag no longer applies to %c and %s; apparently the standards changed at some point. 2. Updated to latest infrastructure: Autoconf 2.65, Automake 1.11.1, libtool 2.2.6b, Bison 2.4.2. 3. Failure to open a socket is no longer a fatal error. 4. dfa.h and dfa.c are now more-or-less in sync with GNU grep, for the first time in many years. 5. Gawk no longer includes its own copy of libsigsegv but it will use it if installed on the build system. The --disable-libsigsegv configure option is now gone. 6. The ' flag (%'d) is now just ignored on systems that can't support it. 7. Hey guys, I just pushed a website update today that improves something everyone has been clamoring for- package maintainers. The quick hits: * Package maintainership is now by 'pkgbase'. If you "adopt" one package, you become a maintainer for all packages with that same pkgbase (including across all architectures). This also means when a package is converted from arch-specific to arch-independent, you won't have to re-adopt it. * We will never lose package maintainer info if we lose packages and they come back in a later processing of the DB. Eric will be glad to hear this. * Multiple maintainers are supported. See http://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/thunderbird/ for an example. All maintainers will get an email when the package is marked out of date (if they are signed up to do so). With all that said, the concept of package adoption is now not an exclusive affair- multiple people can adopt packages and all be listed as maintainers. Hi, We have a bug report asking to enable stack-smashing protection in our package building. Looking at the overhead estimates by other distros that use it, overall it appears fairly minimal (OpenBSD says 1.3% on average). There used to be some build issues (see bottom of this page for Ubuntu report: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GccSsp) but I am not sure of the current status. Also, it can be disabled with -fno-stack-protector if needed. I am in favour of doing this. I think adding -fstack-protector is enough as that adds protection to only functions "vulnerable" to buffer overflows (as defined by gcc... mainly character arrays) while -fstack-protector-all adds it to all functions. We should maybe also add -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2. This detects some buffer overflows compile time and others at run time. It was designed to have minimal runtime overhead. Any opinions? Allan

I noticed problem with gcc 4.5 and the GAP system (http://www.gap-system.org) first: It throws a few aliasing warnings, and the program breaks. When I used -fno-strict-aliasing, the warnings disappeared, but the breakage remained, unless I used -O0. Fixing the aliasing problems also fixed the breakage. Now I noticed the exact same issue with busybox: - Building with -Os throws lots of aliasing warnings, busybox's sed breaks - Building with -Os -fno-strict-aliasing builds without warnings, but it still breaks. - Building with -O0 works, but it isn't optimal. This will affect LOTS of other programs and these errors will not show up as errors or warnings during the build procedure.

Hi all, here is another crazy idea I was thinking about for some days. This should improve our overall package quality and simplify our work flow. The problem with out current [testing] repository are these: * it is only used by very few people. Most of the times we don't get much feedback until packages are moved to core or extra * it is often in a inconsistent state; especially during incomplete so name bump rebuilds * sometimes packages are known to be broken or unstable On the other side we are sometimes in need of some intermediate repository. For example single people stack a pile of packages in their home dirs until they can be moved to a repo at once. We have also seen temporary repos like jpng to manage larger rebuilds. My idea is to redefine the testing repo and introduce a new staging one. (remember the good old days? ;-)) With the implementation of the package pooling moving packages between repos can be done with nearly no overhead. So ideally we should be able to use testing more often, even for a very short period like a day. proposal for [testing] * never push any known-to-be-broken packages here (for example incomplete rebuilds) * candidates for core are put here * ideally new builds of important/critical packages or major rebuilds can be put here to test them by a larger audience. * don't put any package in here which are never meant to be moved to core/extra. (like experimental alpha software etc.) proposal for [staging] * this repo should only used by devs and tus * it is not meant to be used on a production system * it should only be enabled in a packages build environment (chroot) * this could be even excluded from outbound rsync. Due to package pooling packages would still be propagated. And moving those packages to other repos will be "instantly". Summing things up more packages should be passed through testing, more users should be able to use testing without breaking their systems and we don't have to make them reading the high traffic arch-dev-public list. We also should be able to collaborate more in packaging: Dev A puts a new lib into [staging] and another one can start rebuild other packages using that lib. Another common use case would be large builds like KDE we usually start packaging one week before release. Till now those were put into users' staging dirs and the other devs had to manually download them, create a local repo and install them. So, what do you think about this idea? This release adds a build fix to work around a bug in 4.5.0 (see my previous posts about gcc breakage). It also includes a backported commit from the 1.17 branch so we can implement https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/19109. Tested for both architectures in virtual machines (Did I ever mention that Intel VT and KVM are awesome?). Please sign off.

Fixes FS#18857, Missing FDL1.2/license.txt file. Also a general cleanup of the PKGBUILD using that handy makepkg feature that can rename downloaded files so things like "3_0.txt" aren't sitting around. If FDL 1.2 is there and some other random license of your choosing is working too, that should be good for a signoff. -Dan
