This is our new Long Time Supported Kernel recommended for server usage and our general fallback kernel that already made it into the distrowatch news section :) It should now be ready to move into the repos. Please install it along the kernel26 and add it to your grub/lilo section. Give it a try but don't expect any 3rd party modules or late grafics stuff for desktops. Only full Ext4 support has been added for fallback reasons. Please report if you can boot well and if dmesg is clean. Choice of repo. Most devs say it belongs to core. I'm fine with that. Is it safe to push it to core? Some people have concerns about the iso image size. -Andy

new upstream release. please test it and signoff. -Andy About this release ------------------ This is largely a bug-fix release, but also includes a new 'man -K' option to search the full text of all manual pages, as well as support for interpreting pairs of manual page names given on the command line as equivalent to a single manual page name containing a hyphen (e.g. 'man foo bar' => foo-bar(1)) suggested by various posters to the git mailing list. For full details of these and of the other improvements in this release, please see the files docs/NEWS and docs/ChangeLog in the source distribution. man-db 2.5.6 (26 August 2009) ============================= Major changes since man-db 2.5.5: Fixes: ------ o Exact-section database lookups were incorrectly returning all database entries whose section names were prefixes of the requested section name. In some cases this could confuse mandb into never believing that the database was up to date. o Fix handling of pages with comma-separated names ("foo, bar, baz") in their NAME sections, broken by a change in 2.5.0 (!) to ignore manual page names containing spaces. o Fixed a buffer overflow in the pipeline library's line-reading functions. I don't believe this to be exploitable: at worst we might believe that there's some garbage at the end of manual pages (whose contents are untrusted anyway) and this bug typically resulted in a failed assertion the next time anything tried to read a line. o Plugged two substantial memory leaks in the pipeline library. o whatis and apropos only display any given manual page, or pointers to it, once. o man now sets less(1)'s environment up correctly for manual pages encoded in CP1251. o manconv no longer confuses situations such as "this UTF-8 character is not representable in the target encoding" with "this text is not in UTF-8". Improvements: ------------- o The default configuration file now includes section 0, used on some systems to document C library header files. o 'make check' now passes in the presence of a UTF-8-aware col, such as that in util-linux-ng. o The 'man -K' option is now supported to search the full text of all manual pages. This was inspired by a similar option in the other man package (currently at version 1.6f) currently maintained by Federico Lucifredi and formerly by Andries Brouwer, but I took advantage of man-db's pipeline library to implement it entirely in-process, without having to start a separate grep process for every manual page. In my tests with fairly typical searches across variously all manual pages or just one section, man-db's implementation ran between 3 and 10 times faster. o Database directories are now only created when there are corresponding manual page directories, not just because they're mentioned in the configuration file. o By default, man will now try to interpret pairs of manual page names given on the command line as equivalent to a single manual page name containing a hyphen (e.g. 'man foo bar' => foo-bar(1)). This supports the common pattern of programs that implement a number of subcommands, allowing them to provide manual pages for each that can be accessed using similar syntax as would be used to invoke the subcommands themselves. Suggested by H. Peter Anvin, Federico Lucifredi, and others on the git mailing list. o The build process is now quieter by default. Use './configure --disable-silent-rules' or 'make V=0' if you don't like this or your make(1) doesn't support the non-standard extension required. o 'make install' now installs the manual. o manconv understands a wider range of Emacs-style coding tags. o Recommendations to change MAN_DB_CREATES, MAN_DB_UPDATES, and MAN_CATS #define options in manconfig.h have been replaced by new configure options --enable-automatic-create, --disable-automatic-update, and --disable-cats respectively. Note that automatic user database creation is now off by default, as it is often too slow for the usefulness it adds; use --enable-automatic-create to enable it.

Hi, tere were some errors in the logs so I did some small changes; will review the whole file later (tm). * increased memory limit from 32 to 64 (default is 128 afaik) * removed /home from basedirs (complain if you had php scripts there) * Allow mediawiki to execute /usr/bin/diff3 (shouldn't be a big security problem) I did not restart php yet; I am not familar with our current apache config yet. Observations: * Because we export it over NFS, we lose the UIDs and thus the author column sometimes looks bunk Dev site is up, mostly: * I didn't do anything with home directories or anything at all in the non-HTTPS realm, other than a redirect * Sometimes when you hit the / URL, it returns a binary file. I've had a call from a friend whose system wouldn't boot anymore. He has an on-board SATA controller which is active in the initramfs and several IDE controller which are only loaded once root is mounted. He has tons of stuff in /etc/crypttab, I put the IDE drives in there with UUIDs due to problems with changing drive names. Exactly one of the many LUKS devices doesn't show up in /dev/disk/by-uuid/ anymore since an update of initscripts, udev and glibc this week. The other LUKS devices are still there, exactly that one is missing. cryptsetup displays the correct UUID and the device can be unlocked fine. It's also completely reproducible, it's always the same device. I even switched him from ide drivers to libata drivers (he still had the former in rc.conf) and the result is the same. I am lost here, does someone have ideas?

I just found a way to support split packages, by using $(type package_${pkg}), parsing that output and running eval on the relevant lines. Today I've added a 2nd kernel to our svn called "kernel26-lts". It should help to make you less caring about kernel updates. The intention is to 1) have a 2nd choice for the kernel pkg that suits better in certain situations and 2) it can be a fallback when a reboot after updating the core "kernel26" fails more detailed: 1) pkgdesc="The Linux Kernel and modules - stable longtime supported kernel package suitable for servers" The current longtime supported kernel version is 2.6.27.xx, right now we are at 2.6.27.31. The pkgdesc should clearly say what it should become in the future. Server systems won't be forced to take the risk to fail on the next boot after each kernel update. Modifications will be very small in the future within its lifecycle. The kernel configuration is based on the last .27.x config form our core pkg with small changes it has become in later versions + optimizations for server usage taken from here: http://www.serverwatch.com/tutorials/article.php/3715071/Ubuntu-Server--Ker… main changes are: 100Hz, no preempt, deadline I/O schedular. There will be no 3rd party modules. And no further patching. 2) a fallback kernel für almost everybody: a long requested feature. Everybody can install it along the core "kernel26" pkg and add lilo/grub entries for the "lts" kernel. Whenever an update of a future kernel26 will fail you won't be forced to boot with a rescue stick or cd. This should help a lot. attention: 2.6.27 kernel haven't had full ext4 support. I myself run a desktop with an ext4 / partition created with a later kernel version. the "lts" kernel is not capable to boot into this filesystem! But on real servers I guess everybody will wait a bit longer to use ext4. For the future it is planned to probably add Xen support to this or an outsplitted pkg. I will upload packages for both architectures to testing over the next days. Please discuss when you want see changes to the config file (x86_64 is done, i686 is not ready so far). -Andy

To do this, I would like to know the following things: * Which of these mirrors are unreliable? * How many mirrors do we want at the first tier? * What criteria should we use to decide which mirrors are capable of being a tier 1 mirror? * What is the rsync speed for these mirrors? As to the names, it's not something that seems terribly important to me. I try to comment my code anyway and so it wouldn't even be a disaster if they had names like x23_ooo_aaah (ok, I'm exaggerating, they should probably make some sort of sense). I also can't say much about their placement in general or suggest further places as I have only really thought about the places the current larch design would use, and you already have those. I guess you got the others from fbsplash. Maybe at the beginning there shouldn't be too many - it would be easier to add a new one than to move an old one (which somebody might already be using). Maybe briefly the reasons I requested this for larch. In a live system it is helpful to have a bit of flexibility in the way the system is started, the root filesystem is mostly aufs (etc.) and what should appear in /etc/mtab is probably not the same as in a non-live system, also what should get mounted or entered in fstab might well change from boot to boot (from machine to machine). There are other points at which this can be done, but via a hook in rc.sysinit seems cleaner to me. As to rc.shutdown, the main need in larch is caused by session saving, which is probably cleanest/safest when carried out towards the end of the shutdown process. With CDs there is also the question of ejecting the device, which must also happen right at the end. Up to now I have used modified rc.sysinit and rc.shutdown scripts to achieve this, which means editing them every time initscripts is updated - rather annoying. Thanks for your interest and work, mt

A function add_hook can be called from functions.d to register a hook function. The existing hooks are based on suggestions from Michael Towers (larch) and on the implementation of initscripts-extras-fbsplash which currently uses the strings passed to stat_busy and stat_done for this. More hooks can be added if requested. The implementation uses associative arrays and will thus only work with bash 4 or later. The changes have been commited to initscripts.git, but have not yet been extensively tested, only basic functionality tests have been performed: http://projects.archlinux.org/?p=initscripts.git;a=commitdiff;h=cfabb85924f… This should make life easier for larch (not exactly sure what they need it for) and will make initscripts-extras-fbsplash much cleaner to implement. This problem has been bugging me for some time: /etc/profile is only read for login-shells. That is fine, because you launch a login-shell once, then start your graphical environment from it. Most of the environment is persisitent so that it will appear in X terminals (which only launch interactive non-login shells). However, if you launch an interactive shell, the following is lost: * PS1, PS2 * all aliases * /etc/bash_completion So, I have to set up the bashrc of every user to restore PS1, PS2, my custom aliases and bash_completion. Is there a solution to this is in something like a "system-wide bashrc"? The current way is really inconvenient.

The following patches are some hacks at the initscripts I did recently, mostly provoked because our latest initscripts prevent my slice from even booting. Not cool. The most important one, by far, is the backgrounding of the udevadm trigger call. This one sets up a race condition and completely blows up the boot process when the /dev/sda2 node doesn't even exist yet. The rest of the patches are various other things, hopefully explained well within the patch header themselves. Let me know if there are concerns or questions on this stuff. -Dan

So Dusty and I just did the switch-over. Integrity check emails, orphan out-of-date notifications, and repo cleanup emails for both the official repos and community are now all sent to the *private* arch-notifications list. This is private for 2 reasons: to protect email privacy for the people who flag packages out-of-date, and to reduce clutter on lists like arch-commits and the like. Again, this list is private and only for Devs and TUs. It requires manual approval by me, so please don't make more work for me if you're not a dev or TU. The db-update script drives me crazy tonight. I have updated and commited the pkg asymptote but for some obscure reason db-update stubbornly refuses to add it to the repo. First it worked for x86_64 but failed for i686. I found that this was due to a bug in makepkg that does not recreate .PKGINFO when repackaging with option -R (a patch for this was submitted by Allan yesterday I think). Another upstream release, please sign off. This also "fixes" the recent local root exploit, although (I like to repeat that), it was NOT exploitable on our 2.6.30.4 kernel unless you explicitly ran "echo 0 > /proc/sys/vm/mmap_min_addr". However, the .30.5 kernel is safe from this exploit even if you run that command. I only built x86_64 so far, will do i686 in a minute (takes forever to build though). And - with our recent mirror trouble - it might take a while to propagate through the tubes.

As implemented in namcap, namcap now checks for the cache updating in /usr/share/icons/hicolor. I would like to extend this policy to /usr/share/icons/gnome also for 2.28. At this moment only gnome-icon-theme should be affected, but I don't know if there's other icon themes or applications installing icons there. # find /usr/share/icons/hicolor/ -type f | wc -l 616 # find /usr/share/icons/gnome/ -type f | wc -l 3002 Makes sense to cache gnome also then. There's some other themes extending the gnome theme, hicolor is default always, so caching this will make gnome applications a lot faster when doing icon lookup.

Hi, I'm preparing shirts for our meeting at FrOSCon. At the moment the shop which will produce the shirt is checking the vector graphics of our logo which I have sent to him. If he accept it, I will create a shirt and send the preview of it as reply to this mail. If you want a shirt then just reply after you have seen the preview, give me your shirt size and I will bring the shirts to FrOSCon. To limit the order, this is just for the devs/helpers who will meet at FrOSCon. The logo will be http://users.archlinux.de/~pierre/arch/Artwork/archlinux-official-vertical-… large at the back of the shirt. Nothing on the front or as an alternative the logo large on the front and nothing on the back. That's because of the print method which isn't able to print small and tiny lines and to keep it relative cheap. I didn't catch up on mailing list stuff yet (and didn't update my system yet) but I am back home. Now, I already uploaded wireless-regdb to 2009.08.05 and made it an -any package. I was confused though, does anyone know why/since when the repos/ directory in wireless-regdb is empty? The old core-{i686,x86_64} directories are missing. Anyway, please sign off on wireless-regdb (since it's an -any package, I guess that only one additional signoff is needed).

This is not really related to a 'real job' (sorry!) but it's quite interesting since it represents Arch on a quite large FOSS-related site, and it is actually an interesting source of statistics. As someone of you may know - there are Arch Linux related projects registered on Ohloh: * Arch Linux - most git repositories from projects.archlinux.org * Arch Linux Packages - our SVN and community CVS (we should add community SVN when it's ready, but make sure old CVS history is retained) * AUR - aur.git * Arch Linux Installer - installer.git (but not aif.git) * Pacman - pacman.git Is this structure OK or does someone have a suggestions for changes? For example, would it be better to move aif.git to Arch Linux Installer or merge installer.git into Arch Linux? (IMO 2nd way i's better). They also have Managers feature now, so it would be nice if Aaron (they suggest that it should be "Someone who works on the project. Ideally the owner, founder, lead developer, or release manager.") took management of all our projects and modified permissions to protect from vandalism. -- Roman Kyrylych (Роман Кирилич)

So as has been brought up in other threads, udev 145 uses signalfd(), which unfortunately seems to be absent in older kernels. That is only half the story. >From this Debian bug (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=537509) glibc 2.9 and later unfortunately broke compatibility with the older signalfd and eventfd syscalls that are present in all kernels after 2.6.22. A new syscall (signalfd4) was introduced in 2.6.27, and for some reason glibc decided to completely switch to this rather than be backwards-compatible. Long story short- if we apply this patch (http://patch-tracking.debian.net/patch/series/dl/eglibc/2.9-23+multiarch.2/…) from the Debian patch collection[1], we can make our glibc, and thus udev, compatible with modern-ish kernels out there and not cause unnecessary breakage for users. It should have nearly zero impact for anyone else as glibc will still prefer the new syscall. There's a release of GNOME 2.27.90 scheduled for this week, which means that GNOME will enter a code freeze. This is the point where I usually pick up packaging the next major version. For GNOME 2.27/28, some things will change in the distribution: - DeviceKit-Disks (new package) - PolicyKit 1.0 replacing 0.9 - PulseAudio (new package) - Esound DeviceKit-Disks will replace the functionality that used to be provided by hal. GNOME will no longer use hal for this. I don't know about KDE, but I think they will follow soon. Hal will stay alive, but it has received deprecation status upstream, which means that only bugfixes will get applied, no new features anymore. My plans are to replace PolicyKit 0.9 with 1.0 completely. Yes, they can be installed side-by-side, but I don't like to have a deprecated policy framework on my system. Any application depending on PolicyKit needs to be ported. Fedora has patches available for most of them. In case of KDE and GNOME: both support PolicyKit 1.0 in the latest versions, KDE 4.3 and GNOME 2.27/28. The only package that I know of not supporting PolicyKit 1.0 is hal. Hal will get a special treatment: removal of PolicyKit interaction. The next version of hal will use an at_console ruleset. ConsoleKit has backwards compatibility for this. I don't want to return to the group setup we had before. Since Udev 145 will use ACLs once our initscripts mount /dev/ on tmpfs instead of ramfs, a ConsoleKit login will create ACLs for access to devices on /dev. This means users don't have to be member of any group to listen to sound, use DRI or write CDs once this is changed. Enforcing group membership to hal users would be a stupid thing to do then. Then there's PulseAudio. Though I still don't feel the need for this one on the systems I own, a lot of users have requested this. PA has matured a lot in the meanwhile, and PA is more than just an ordinary ESD replacement. Another issue is ESD. This package is not really maintained upstream anymore, and I don't think it makes sense to have two sound servers as dependency for one desktop. Given the fact that Fedora disables esound support since 2.23.4, I think it won't be a problem to remove it from the dependency chain. Esound will stay in the repositories, but won't be used by GNOME as sound server anymore.

This rebuild just makes the libarchive dependency >=2.7.0-2 rather than 2.7.0. This stops the SyncFirst option updating pacman and not libarchive, thus ensuring xz-utils gets installed as a dep. This is an issue for people who last updated between 2009-04-16 and 2009-06-10. Signoff both. Allan

Random attempt, I don't know all the info, so feel free to add as needed: Udev Minimum Kernel Version The release of udev 145-1 requires a minimum kernel version of 2.6.25 (due to the signalfd function) to work. It is highly recommended that you are running the latest kernel, but if that is not an option, it is suggested to put udev in a NoUpgrade line until your kernel can be upgraded.

So I setup (with the help of Pierre) a torrent tracker on sigurd, located at tracker.archlinux.org Pierre has pointed his tracker DNS to ours, so it should be our single tracker now. It is setup with a whitelist, so an admin needs to add the torrent hash if new additions are necessary. The torrent hash can be sniffed from a torrent file using `transmissioncli -i FILENAME` As of right now it's tracking whatever the archlinux.de tracker had (archboot ISOs mostly) and the official RC1 ISOs. Hi Devs and TUs, with the recent KDE update the packages were split up. All packages in extra should be updated but if you maintain a KDE related package please check. Try to reduce the deps (use namcap) and replace a dep to kdegraphics with the needed sub packages. At least a KDE pacakges which has some standalone app should depend on kdebase-runtime (namcap wont tell you) In addition to this phonon is included into Qt now. I'll move everything from kde-unstable to testing; let's hope the new and never tested db-move scripts are working. :-) If there are no lockers KDE will be updated to 4.3 final tomorrow and move on to extra after a short period in testing. Hi, Thought I would point out some changes to how makepkg handles info pages. 1) /usr/share/info/dir will automatically be removed 2) info pages will be compressed (gzip). 3) !docs by default will not remove info pages (they are treated like man pages). If you were not compressing info pages, you will need to make sure your install file has ".gz"'s added as appropriate. Remember to merge your makepkg.conf... Allan

Hi all, Getting around to this again.... [draft] /dev layour cleanup The /dev layout has been cleaned up to comply to the device names specified in the Linux kernel documentation. We had some legacy left from our devfs days, which has now been removed. The most obvious change from a users perspective is the vc/*->tty* transition. The initscripts-2007.08 update requires adjusting the /etc/inittab file to refer to tty* instead of vc/*. Due to severe system breakages if this file is not updated, this change will be automatically handled by pacman. The original /etc/inittab file is saved as /etc/inittab.pacsave. To be clear: package /etc/inittab -> inittab.pacnew (if needed) system /etc/inittab -> inittab.pacsave system /etc/inittab --sed--> inittab Make sure to check these files after the update and do any merging that is required. [/draft] Finally, are we going to do a quick update to initscripts and filesystem before this is moved? There have been a few patches push to get for these. I can do that tomorrow if people agree? Hi, I have done some of the rebuilds required for ruby. Could the maintainers of the following packages look into rebuilding them against ruby-1.9. rrdtool - I did the rebuild but no idea how to test... weechat - seems not compatible. Disable plugin? subversion - I get this error when building in a chroot: You don't seem to have Berkeley DB version 4.0.14 or newer installed and linked to APR-UTIL. We have created Makefiles which will build without the Berkeley DB back-end; ...<snip> db is a dep so I have no idea what is going on. Maybe needs another makedep? Hi devs, I just had an interesting case where a missing dependency cam be unnoticed for a long time. I was told that KDE from kde-unstable could not start due to a missing lib: libxdamage. Neither namcap or anyone else did found this missing dep. And here was the solution: libxdamage is needed by libgl which in turn is needed by mesa ->qt->kdelibs etc.. But if you have nvidia-utils installed which provides libgl but does not depend on libxdamage or libxxf86vm you'll end up with a broken dependency tree. What do we learn by this? I'm looking at updating hal, which needs the new libblkid that is included in util-linux. This library replaces the one inside e2fsprogs. Now we have some nice dependency loop: e2fsprogs contains libuuid e2fsprogs depends on libblkid libblkid depends on libuuid (optional, but default) This can end up with some solutions: 1. build libblkid without libuuid support 2. build libuuid standalone, make util-linux depend on it and make e2fsprogs depend on util-linux 3. Link libblkid static inside the tools and don't install the libraries 4. create a dependency loop I think option 4 is completely wrong. Option 3 should work, but sounds wrong also. Especially when you keep in mind that the lib inside e2fsprogs won't see any maintenance. Option 2 is the cleanest, Option 1 is less work, but I don't know what limitations we get by doing so. Any opinions?

Hi! The "View SVN Entries" link does not work for community packages. Probably it's because viewvc does not work for community yet (http://repos.archlinux.org/viewvc.cgi/?root=community An Exception Has Occurred) But I think we may need to add &root=community to that link for all packages in community. The "Bug Reports" link leads to "Arch Linux" project which will increase the amount of bugs reported in a wrong category. ?project=5 should be added for community packages. It is currently in AUR (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=10348) I could actually bundle it with texlive-bin since it is now (optionally) included in TeXLive 2009, but packaging it separately is much less trouble. I would add it to texlive-bin's optdepends. Objections?

All of these packages should be moved to core so they can be included in the ISOs: mkinitcpio: Just a one-commit change, has been in testing for a while, just no signoff thread (was waiting for full -any support) cryptsetup: nobody ever replied, works fine here openvpn: Paul tested -1, -2 fixed the URL and one bug in the new init script, but I never got a reply on the signoff. initscripts: no idea, but gerbra says he needs a fix that is included here.

Hi, we currently announced 2009.08-beta1 [1]. Our time plan (if we don't get any showstopper) to RC and final release is: 2009.08-RC on Monday, 3. August 2009 2009.08 Final latest on 9. August 2009 I've build a iso with testing repo enabled to see if we get any problem with packages current in testing but maybe on the release in core/extra - but all seems to work fine. But if you plan other transitions before release date (or if you see anything what could break the images) please hold them back until the release is done. Or leave a reply to us... It also gives me no false positives (although the results from the current lddd can be restored with the -L flag). I have not spent much time looking at the code, but this seems a great candidate to replace the current lddd after some review. In a third loop, the files from step one are checked by ldd(1) prefixed with this LD_LIBRARY_PATH to see if any prerequisites are missing. This step is repeated without the path to check the odd customer. 4. Suspects aquired this way are sent to a co-process to determine the packages they belong to. 5. Results are collected into files in /tmp/lddd-c.sh-$UID and a summary listed to stdout. This makes it easy to use in cron-jobs. Detail is controlled by the number of '-v' options. Step four was intended to speed up the process, but as it turns out it doesn't help all that much. The pacman call is indeed expensive and can be done in parallel, but it obviously competes for disk access. Therefore the co-process caches the file list of any broken package expecting to find more broken files in it, but this only helps big packages with several broken executables. All in all lddd-c.sh is an improvement over the simpler lddd and the terribly hacked findbrokenpkgs[1]. As there should be no false positives, it should report b0rked packages after botched or incomplete updates in a reliable way. Valuable testing was done by Allan McRae and AttilaH. I don't really get the point where there difference will be and if the links would be broken when using different filesystems/partitions and links in itself. By default, it makes hard links; with the `-s' option, it makes symbolic (or "soft") links. Synopses: ln [OPTION]... [-T] TARGET LINKNAME ln [OPTION]... TARGET ln [OPTION]... TARGET... DIRECTORY ln [OPTION]... -t DIRECTORY TARGET... * If two file names are given, `ln' creates a link to the first file from the second. * If one TARGET is given, `ln' creates a link to that file in the current directory. * If the `--target-directory' (`-t') option is given, or failing that if the last file is a directory and the `--no-target-directory' (`-T') option is not given, `ln' creates a link to each TARGET file in the specified directory, using the TARGETs' names. Normally `ln' does not remove existing files. A "hard link" is another name for an existing file; the link and the original are indistinguishable. "Symbolic links" ("symlinks" for short), on the other hand, are a special file type (which not all kernels support: System V release 3 (and older) systems lack symlinks) in which the link file actually refers to a different file, by name. When most operations (opening, reading, writing, and so on) are passed the symbolic link file, the kernel automatically "dereferences" the link and operates on the target of the link. But some operations (e.g., removing) work on the link file itself, rather than on its target. The owner, group, and mode of a symlink are not significant to file access performed through the link. *Note Symbolic Links: (libc)Symbolic Links. Symbolic links can contain arbitrary strings; a "dangling symlink" occurs when the string in the symlink does not resolve to a file. There are no restrictions against creating dangling symbolic links. There are trade-offs to using absolute or relative symlinks. An absolute symlink always points to the same file, even if the directory containing the link is moved. However, if the symlink is visible from more than one machine (such as on a networked file system), the file pointed to might not always be the same. A relative symbolic link is resolved in relation to the directory that contains the link, and is often useful in referring to files on the same device without regards to what name that device is mounted on when accessed via networked machines. When creating a relative symlink in a different location than the current directory, the resolution of the symlink will be different than the resolution of the same string from the current directory. Therefore, many users prefer to first change directories to the location where the relative symlink will be created, so that tab-completion or other file resolution will find the same target as what will be placed in the symlink.

I don't know if you use dchroot or schroot. They're both tools that let a user chroot to a different directory. dchroot was easy to configure, but behaved weird: There was always some PAM message in the logs about 'su'. And it required root privileges through the setuid bit. dchroot is also discontinued. Now there is schroot. It seems awfully bloated, has unnecessary features like mounting filesystems when chrooting, running linux32 and whatnot. Configuration is complex, and it also has some weird interaction with PAM. schroot, like dchroot, requires root privileges through the setuid bit. I need a tool like this frequently, and was fed up with the above two. So I wrote my own. Features: - Lets an unprivileged user chroot to directories defined in /etc/capchroot.allow - Does nothing more than chroot, chdir and exec a program or shell, really! - Does not require root privileges, but only a kernel >=2.6.24, a filesystem with xattr support and the cap_sys_chroot capability set on its executable. This way, the only possible security problem is that a programming error might allow a user to bypass the restrictions in capchroot.allow and chroot to an arbitrary directory. I use it in a script like this: #!/bin/sh exec linux32 capchroot -d $PWD /mnt/arch32 -- "$@" My /home is mounted in /mnt/arch32/home, so changing the directory to $PWD after the chroot will actually work. There have been a lot of changes going on to the repos and ABS needs updated to reflect these. As it see it the following need fixed: 1) arch=('any') support Fix commited to git 2) split package support Currently the PKGBUILD is only found in /var/abs/$repo/$pkgbase. This would make it difficult to find a split package directly. Should the db-scripts add symlinks from $pkgbase to ${pkgname[@]}? That would have a bonus effect of reserving at the split package names. 3) community support I can see this being achieved in two ways - svn2abs is run on sigurd then rsynced to gerolde - svn2abs is run directly on gerolde (requires complete svn checkout on gerolde) The second is easier but uses a bit more resources. 4) community-testing support. Comes directly as part of #3 but will need to be added to the abs.conf file So should we do anything for #2 (requires changes to db-scripts) and which is the best way to go for #3? Allan

I suppose we need a news item for this so here is a draft: [draft] Transition from vc/* to tty* standard With the update to initscripts-2009.07, we are transitioning from the old vc/* style devices to the current standard of tty*. This transition involves updates to the filesystem, initscripts, syslog-ng and udev packages. As always, users should update all packages at the same time rather than individual packages. The initscripts update requires adjusting the /etc/inittab file to refer to tty* instead of vc/*. Due to severe system breakages if this file is not updated, this will be automatically handled by pacman. The original /etc/inittab file is saved as /etc/inittab.pacsave. However, it is important that all users check the changes made to this file (and even better, completely merge the .pacnew file). [/draft] Comments? Allan

What the heck is going on? I spent a good hour or two rebuilding the vim plugins for the correct location when vim first went into [testing] a few months ago, and with this new vim in testing, they are once again *all* broken. This is unacceptable as far as I am concerned. If I'm the only one that thinks so, I'll quiet down a bit, but I am getting awfully frustrated with this. If we move plugin locations or distro install locations, *all* packages dependent on this location need to be rebuilt. I've just prepared pre-release packages of TeXLive 2009. They should be ready for release (upstream) within the next 4-8 weeks. Before that, I'd *really* love to benefit from arch=any. That would save considerable space on gerolde, as well as bandwidth, and would also speed up my task with building/uploading. Any prospect of making the transition to the new dbscripts soon? We could use the testing repo first to check that everything runs as expected. F

Hi, dhclient is out-of-date and the last update to the package was from September last year. In order to fix this bug: FS#15515 - [dhclient] DHCP Stack Overflow in 'dhclient' script_write_params() (http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/15515) I get some troubles. At the moment our package is at 3.0.6, but ISC doesn't provide a patch for the above stack overflow, instead they adivse you to upgrade to 4.1.0p1, 4.0.1p1, or 3.1.2p1. I have tested 3.1.2p1 and our own huge patch (http://repos.archlinux.org/viewvc.cgi/dhclient/repos/extra-x86_64/arch-nm.p…) doesn't apply anymore. Nevertheless I have absolute no clue what this patch is doing completely. I have seen that it adds an additional option on command line "-x", but I don't know what it's doing. The other two patches from us are more or less needless with the new versions. This (http://repos.archlinux.org/viewvc.cgi/dhclient/repos/extra-x86_64/fix-broke…) was fixed in the new version from ISC and the other patch changes: - ifconfig $interface inet 0 down + ifconfig $interface inet 0 in the scripts and I really don't know why. The patch is called "fix-mac80211-wireless". Nevertheless of the patch problems above, I have tried the newest version 4.1.0p1. It's clear that our patches don't apply anymore, but I think they aren't necessary anymore. Like in 3.1.2p1 the last two patches are needless and the "arch-nm.patch" doesn't apply and I have not enough knowledge about the dhclient source code here. As I said, I have test the 4.1.0p1 and it compiles fine, BUT only if I disable DHCPv6. I haven't tried the package yet, but I'm not sure if we should deliver it without DHCPv6. Otherwise I don't know how many servers uses DHCPv6 at the moment or will use it. Should we provide the 4.1.0p1 package, but without DHCPv6 support? I have looked at some other distros, they have enabled DHCPv6 and it seems that it compiles. But I don't know if they have the latest toolchain. Your advice please...need some input here. Daniel

Recently the ftp-release-list for ftp.gnome.org has switched over to sha256sums, which means that I can't copy and paste checksums from the mailinglist anymore. I see that makepkg supports sha256 without problems, but when I enter sha256sums=('somesum') into a PKGBUILD without modifying makepkg.conf to use them, makepkg warns about missing checksums. Shouldn't makepkg check for any supported checksum type by default? If sha256sums is defined, it should check them. If sha1sums is defined, it should check them too, etc. This makes more sense than depending only on the INTEGRITY_CHECK variable set in makepkg.conf.

I've put mesa 7.5, xorg-server 1.6.2, xf86-video-intel 2.7.99.902 and a rebuild/update of all drivers containing DRI drivers in testing. The nouveau package was modified to use the latest version of libdrm instead of building from git, as the libdrm version is actually git master at this moment. I haven't included Radeon Gallium3D support yet, but we might put this into testing in a later stage. The libdrm package contains all the required libraries and changes for this. Please give these packages a test, so we can move them to extra soon.

Hi all, Now [testing] is relatively empty, I would like to implement FS#11352 that involve switching to /dev/tty* instead of the old /dev/vc*. This involves altering the filesystem, syslog-ng, udev and initscripts packages (patches against git/svn this comment: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/11352#comment44293) Can someore who is familiar with udev rules give the udev patch a look over. It looks fine to me but I might be missing something. There are a few commits in initscripts git. Should we push a new release at the same time or just patch the current version. Allan

Hi all, are thee any big rebuilds planned? Otherwise I would like to put version 5.3 of PHP into testing. There is still an issue with suhosin but this way people would have more time to check their scripts. We should also make sure that our Scripts (like AUR) work with the new PHP version. I could help here if there are problems. The good thing is that we don't provide packages with php scripts; so from our side everything is fine. ;-) But seriously: this version has great potential to break lots of especially very old PHP scripts. Looks like one of the last updates makes it impossible to extract the db files using bsdtar within php. This might be due to an undocumented change in php or just a bug.
