Hi guys, we all know that we suffer in this chapter a lot. I was talking today with Florian about implementing a backup strategy, involving master-slave setup and dbs, pulling encrypted snapshots on the box and so on. For that we need at least to rent a new server just for this job, maybe an atom server with lots of space. What do you think about this idea? Do you know a good company that has good prices, that you use and has good services? -- Ionuț

Hi guys, I'm seeing several bug reports and forum threads about this, so I thought I'd ask your opinion about doing a news item: Udev delay during boot udev-176 (and later) no longer work around a certain class of kernel bugs[0]. If you are using an affected driver it means that you will encounter a 30 second delay on boot. It seems that mostly wireless drivers are affected by this. The netdev guys are aware of the issue, and are working on a solution. systemd users are largely[2] unaffected by this issue. [0]: http://www.spinics.net/lists/netdev/msg185742.html [1]: the bug still occurs, and the 30-second timeout still happens, but the rest of userspace will boot in parallell, unlike in initscripts where the rest of userspace will wait.

Since people seem to have forgotten about pacman -Ql and are incapable of rational thought, I've prepared the following news draft about kmod replacing m-i-t. Comments welcome. ---------8<------------------------------------- kmod replaces module-init-tools With module-init-tools being declared a dead project by its current maintainer, a new project has stepped up to take its place: kmod. This is intended to be a drop-in replacement, though deprecated functionality in module-init-tools has not been reimplemented. If, upon upgrade, pacman pacsaves [/etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf], you should move it back. This file, and any other config read by module-init-tools is still read by kmod. However, the kmod package will no long include a blank config file. You'll find the same (if not more) documentation in the manpages and --help output for the binaries.
