Hello, A specter is haunting the GNU/Linux ecosystem: the specter of per-user containerization. Software like Flatpak and Snappy promise fully sandboxed GNU/Linux application bundles (instead of merely launching an application with fewer privileges but without hiding the operating system, like Bubblewrap or Firejail do). Bundles ship with the version of their dependencies which they need. Dependencies are not force-upgraded with the operating system, but easily upgradable by the bundle creator. The same files in different bundles and versions are deduplicated to save space. Applications can be containerized once for all modern GNU/Linux operating systems. Unlike Docker, Flatpak works without root privileges. Flatpak allows you to run, say, a sandboxed and containerized copy of LibreOffice where opening an infected file can only cause harm to what the sandbox has access to, but not compromise the integrity of the system as a whole. Untrustworthy games can be isolated and run without fear of a system compromise. More generally, most GUI applications should probably be installed to and run from a Flatpak sandbox. This has major implications for traditional package managers. Pacman would be demoted to providing the base system on top of which Flatpak bundles downloaded from elsewhere are run (e.g. from gnome.org or from reallytheofficialwebsiteoflibreofficeipromise.com) However, I would prefer having a unified pacman-like interface for installing containerized and non-containerized applications. I believe a PKGBUILD is a good way to specify how to build an application for Flatpak as well. I do not want to lose the many packages from Arch and derivative distributions. tl;dr: Therefore I started writing a tool called pacpak which uses pacman to populate Flatpak application bundles. Its interface is meant to be similar to pacman’s. For example, in order to install gedit into a Flatpak application using a bundle of the gnome packages as a runtime, you install pacpak from the AUR and use: $ pacpak -S Base xterm You can run the resulting application like this: $ flatpak run $(hostname).app.xterm pacpak is still in its early alpha stages. I do not currently have the time to devote more than a day per week to its development. However, I’d like some feedback on the basic idea. I am also looking for a home for the project in the longer term, since I do not currently like to administer a bug tracker on my own rented server and dislike centralizing all free software development on GitHub or Sourceforge (I’d rather administer my own then). This will only be helpful once all the basic features are implemented of course. I would be glad if pacpak or a similar tool eventually becomes an official Arch project. Hey guys! I'm not writing this mail to complain, I'm just wondering! I use ardour quite a lot and of course I wanted the update to version 5 as soon as possible. The first release 5.0 didn't build here, so I thought ok, maybe the maintainer of this package is struggling with it too. The current version is 5.3 which compiles and runs just fine. So now I wonder why we don't get an update. So I looked at the other packages of the maintainer, see this link https://www.archlinux.org/packages/?packager=schiv and well, I see a lot of red there! [arch-general] Screen lock stopped working

I've noticed that my screen lock / screensaver has stopped engaging as of a couple of days ago. I check the settings (which I haven't changed recently), but they seem to be set correctly. Anyone have an idea what package upgrade might have caused this and/or which bugs I should watch for a resolution? I'm running XFCE desktop btw. Thanks, DR

All, First let me explain I have search through the forums, StackExchange site (SuperUser & Linux Unix StackExhange) and read the problems with similar title, 90% of which were USB install and related to failure to have the proper iso name (e.g ARCH_201603) as the image name, the other 10% were related to /dev/disk/by-label not being created and suggest the creation of the directory and symlink of the install device (e.g. /dev/sr0 to /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201603) and exiting the maintenance shell to have the install pickup and continue. Neither of these are a solution. I have one Supermicro server (similar but slightly older) where the install went without issue (H8QM8-2 w/4 Opteron 8360SE). This server is the H8DME-2-LS006 Rev 1.10 w/2 Opteron 8382 processors. (specs: http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/motherboard/Opteron2000/MCP55/H8DME-2.cfm) Initially, the boot would hang during pci activation with the line pci 000:00:1a.0: [1a:1e:1100] type -- class 0x060000 I reset the bios to the failsafe defaults, still no joy. The Hardware Detection Tool showed a 3Leaf Systems, Inc.|unknown device at that address, the details of which were: Vendor : 3Leaf Systems, Inc. Product : unknown Class : Host bridge Location : 00:1a.0 PCI ID : 1a1e:1100[0000:0000] Latency : 0 Module : unknown Looking though all the bios options, trying one at a time, I found an option for something related to AQUA (? This board an AQUA were apparently the brainchild of 3Leaf, Inc. now out of business http://www.eetimes.com/document.asp?doc_id=1172150 which allowed you to link 32 Opteron processors into a single server) So disabling AQUA completely in the bios allowed the box to boot normally all the way though: :: running hook [archiso_pxe_nfs] :: Mounting '/dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201603' to '/run/archiso/bootmnt' Waiting 30 seconds for devices.... then the error and I'm dropped to the maintenance shell (e.g. [rootfs /]# ). I've tried the solutions shown at the beginning but I still can't proceed with the remainder of the install. When I create the /dev/disk/by-label directory, create the symlink, and exit the maintenance shell, I get the following error: Buffer I/O error on dev sr0 logical block 0, async page read sr 6:0:1:0 [sr0] tag#0 UNKNOWN(0x2003) Result:hostbyte-0x00 driverbyte=0x08 sr 6:0:1:0 [sr0] tag#0 Sense Key : 0x4 [current] sr 6:0:1:0 [sr0] tag#0 ASC=0x8 ASCQ=0x3 sr 6:0:1:0 [sr0] tag#0 CDB: opcode: 0x28 28 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 02 00 blk_update_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 0 isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=sr0, iso_blknum=16, block=16 So I need help from the smart folks here. I'm not entirely sure what this error is telling me other than there is some UNKNOWN result that prevents the archiso mount. With this AQUA setting completely disabled in the bios, I don't know if this error is related to that setting, but I suspect it is. What could I try to get past this error? This gave new users the impression that the Arch Wiki is a place for all-in-one hand-holding tutorials. Then they finish installing their system and are shocked and appalled at how "sadistic" and "inaccessible" the rest of the wiki is. The installation guide isn't a ritualistic hazing, it's a "you must be this tall to ride" sign. Max

[arch-general] Samba Upgrade 4.4.5 -> 4.5 Broke mount.cifs share mounting

All, I've run samba in standalone mode since the 2.0.7 days and have been though a few breakages due to version updates along the way. It seems we have hit one again in the 4.4 to 4.5 update. Specifically, the update was: samba-4.4.5 => samba-4.5.0 There were no changes made to smb.conf, but the following attempted mount failed using: mount.cifs //phoinix/samba /mnt/phx -o username=david,uid=1000,credentials=/home/adm/mountcfile,noperm I've been mounting the box like this for the past several years. There are no entries in the logs telling me why the mount fails, it just fails. Has anyone else experienced problems with the samba-4.4.5 => samba-4.5.0 update, and if so, any solutions? I've currently downgraded to samba-4.4.5 and all works as it should. I've checked the old forum thread - https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=190592 that isn't related to the current issue. I've check the arch and samba wikis, no help. I've also posted to the samba list, still awaiting a reply. Hello Guys I have been trying to build telegram based on this: https://github.com/telegramdesktop/tdesktop/blob/master/doc/building-cmake.… I am in the final part and I keep getting this error: [ 0%] Built target Updater [ 1%] Built target codegen_numbers__qt_moc make[2]: *** No rule to make target '/usr/local/ssl/lib/libssl.a', needed by 'codegen_numbers'. Stop. make[1]: *** [CMakeFiles/Makefile2:457: CMakeFiles/codegen_numbers.dir/all] Error 2 make: *** [Makefile:84: all] Error 2 Now I understand that there is no libssl in arch and it's probably because of that.
