[arch-general] Reliability test for hard drives and SSD

Hi there! Good news for all interested in hardware compatibility and reliability. I've started a new project to estimate reliability of hard drives and SSD in real-life conditions based on the SMART data reports collected by Linux users in the Linux-Hardware.org database since 2014. The initial data (SMART reports), analysis methods and results are publicly shared in a new github repository: https://github.com/linuxhw/SMART. Everyone can contribute to the report by uploading probes of their computers by the hw-probe tool! The primary aim of the project is to find drives with longest "power on hours" and minimal number of errors. The following formula is used to measure reliability: Power_On_Hours / (1 + Number_Of_Errors), i.e. time to the first error/between errors. Please be careful when reading the results table. Pay attention not only to the rating, but also to the number of checked model samples. If rating is low, then look at the number of power-on days and number of errors occurred. New drive models will appear at the end of the rating table and will move to the top in the case of long error-free operation. Hello, The class Python for Beginners - Part 1 will be held on Wednesday, October 04, 2017 at 16:00 UTC in the channel #archlinux-classroom on the freenode network. The class is expected to run for about 2 hours. This class will introduce you to programming with Python and how to use IPython with an editor/IDE. Commonly used built-in functions and libraries will be explained. Other topics will explored based on participant interests. The class will be screen-shared live (via YouTube), and later archived with subtitles. Questions and some discussion on IRC is expected, however the main part will be video and audio. In preparation for the class, install the Jupyter notebook. ``pacman -S jupyter`` or, in a Python 3 virtualenv, ``pip3 install jupyter``. [arch-general] Firefox screen tearing

Hello, I am using firefox v 60.0b15 installed from AUR. My hardware is: 1. AMD 1600 Processor 2. nVidia 1500Ti GPU running nVidia proprietary driver 3. 16GB 3200MHz RAM There should not be any problem running firefox with this configuration but I am facing weird lag and screen tearing when I turn on smooth scrolling. Things I have tried: 1. Enabled / Disabled hardware acceleration 2. Applied 1.2, 1.3, 1.6, 1.8, 1.10, 1.11 from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Firefox/Tweaks<https://link.getmailspring.com/link/1524668509.local-c70ad352-4319-v1.2.1-7…> I had scrolling issue before trying anything, still have them. My desktop environment is KDE and Kernel version is 4.16.3-1-ARCH. I have all the updates installed. What can I do to make the tearing go away? Turning off smooth scrolling does solve the issue but I'd like to keep it on. Thanks C

[arch-general] Update to samba, smbclient, libwbclient breaks standalone file service/cifs mounts

All, The samba, smbclient, libwbclient from 4.7.6 to 4.8 breaks role=standalone breaks the standalone file-server and cifs mounts. Gone with 4.8 are the nmbd.service and smbd.service. Standalone servers should use windbind.service for file sharing and cifs mounts -- but it does not work. After tonight's update to 4.8.0 all cifs mounts were left unreachable. Hey hey, I have problems with hunspell recognising apostrophes. Googling for it, I find that it's a known problem, which is - according to GitHub - still open. Is hunspell still the spellchecker of the hour or are there preferred packages, more actively maintained? [arch-general] Verifying a "privilege dropping" issue with ZeroTier One

Hello all! Summary: Can anyone who uses ZeroTier replicate this issue with vanilla Arch? https://github.com/zerotier/ZeroTierOne/issues/714 Description: I've come across an issue [1] with ZeroTier One which currently manifests after adding an unprivileged `zerotier-one` user to my Manjaro system; ZT can't set IP address and route. This previously worked fine so I want to find out whether e.g. it's a change in the kernel, and particularly whether it's isolated to Manjaro or shared by Arch. It doesn't manifest on any of my Debian and Ubuntu systems. Details: Debian- and RH-based distro packages automatically add the unprivileged user [2][3] (there's nothing "fancy" to the `adduser`/`useradd` command). The Arch package doesn't do this. With the unprivileged user present ZT can't add IP address or route, even when run with the "don't drop privileges" switch (sudo zerotier-one -U). Trying to do some digging, the most recent related change to ZeroTier was [4] on 17th April 2017, 1.2.4 was released 24th April 2017, so the required privileges in the commit should be current to 1.2.4: 952 + // dropPrivileges switches to zerotier-one user while retaining CAP_NET_ADMIN 953 + // and CAP_NET_RAW capabilities. This used to work up until fairly recently, perhaps a month or so ago is the last time I _know_ it worked. I've tested with Manjaro kernels 4.14.34, 4.15.17, and 4.16.2, all with the same result. I suspect it to be kernel-related given the capability requirements and the ever-onward march of kernel updates. However, I'm not an expert in kernel-related stuff so could be looking at entirely the wrong thing. [arch-general] Mirrorlist Generator Not Working?

Hello, is it just me or is the mirror list generator currently not working? When I call for example: https://www.archlinux.org/mirrorlist/?country=DE&protocol=https&ip_version=… I get a list with all mirrors at the moment and not just the ones where the above parameters apply. Best, Marc
