Hi there! Good news for all interested in hardware compatibility and reliability. I've started a new project to estimate reliability of hard drives and SSD in real-life conditions based on the SMART data reports collected by Linux users in the Linux-Hardware.org database since 2014. The initial data (SMART reports), analysis methods and results are publicly shared in a new github repository: https://github.com/linuxhw/SMART. Everyone can contribute to the report by uploading probes of their computers by the hw-probe tool! The primary aim of the project is to find drives with longest "power on hours" and minimal number of errors. The following formula is used to measure reliability: Power_On_Hours / (1 + Number_Of_Errors), i.e. time to the first error/between errors. Please be careful when reading the results table. Pay attention not only to the rating, but also to the number of checked model samples. If rating is low, then look at the number of power-on days and number of errors occurred. New drive models will appear at the end of the rating table and will move to the top in the case of long error-free operation. Thanks to ROSA, Arch, Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, Mint, openSUSE, Gentoo users and others who had made this work possible by contribution to the database!

Hello, The class Python for Beginners - Part 1 will be held on Wednesday, October 04, 2017 at 16:00 UTC in the channel #archlinux-classroom on the freenode network. The class is expected to run for about 2 hours. This class will introduce you to programming with Python and how to use IPython with an editor/IDE. Commonly used built-in functions and libraries will be explained. Other topics will explored based on participant interests. The class will be screen-shared live (via YouTube), and later archived with subtitles. Questions and some discussion on IRC is expected, however the main part will be video and audio. In preparation for the class, install the Jupyter notebook. ``pacman -S jupyter`` or, in a Python 3 virtualenv, ``pip3 install jupyter``. Hi, I put this text in /etc/environment: $ source /etc/environment ip="$(ifconfig | grep -A 1 'eth0' | tail -1 | cut -d ':' -f 2 | cut -d ' ' -f 1)" $ echo $ip 192.168.0.33 Works fine, but when I reboot my archlinux: $ echo $ip $(ifconfig | grep -A 1 'eth0' | tail -1 | cut -d ':' -f 2 | cut -d ' ' -f 1) What's happened?? Is necessary exec source /etc/environment after every reboot? Thanks in advanced.

[arch-general] KDE plasma, baloo and UI/video playback freezes

Hi, My problem is: when I'm watching a video, running Konversation in the background with logging on disk enabled, the playback of video slows down, freezes for a while. Running iotop and ksysguard I found that baloo_file_extractor is writing on disk a big amount of data, filling the write queue; balooct monitor shows baloo is indexing Konversation's logs file changes. Peaks of 60-90 MB/s of data on mechanical hdd are generated and the playback of videos (or audio, or other GUI-related tasks) slow down or freeze. Very very annoying. I'm running updated versions of: KDE plasma (5.12.5), kernel (4.16.7), baloo (5.45); CFQ I/O scheduler on sda. On the same machine, the same version of softwares, the same configurations (of programs, mounts, IO scheduler) BUT on a Debian sid install (home is shared between installs) is NOT showing the same issue. On Debian, playback is running smootly even if baloo_file_extractor is heavly loading IO writes queue. On each installation I added this tweaks, to improve Vm management by the kernel: [frapox@tungsteno ~]$ cat /etc/sysctl.d/local.conf vm.dirty_background_ratio = 2 vm.dirty_ratio = 5 vm.vfs_cache_pressure = 60 I also tried to recompile the Arch kernel with CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY=y, to reflect the same default compile setting of Debian, but the issue wasn't solved. So i'm wondering which other config files or settings/tweaks I can look into to overcome this issue on Arch linux (I'd really love to keep on use Arch as my main OS). Thanks in advance. -- fp

Indeed. Is it for consumption of users whose shell you don't know? Is it for scripts, like cron jobs? In the former case, see what is in /etc/shells, and drop a script to /etc/profile.d, one for each shell. But that will be for login shells. In the latter case, I am afraid you need to define it each time... Finally, a bit of a puzzle, what are you going to do when the network goes down, i.e. should the variable be unset or updated? [arch-general] Where can I 'setterm -blank 5 -powerdown 6' as part of the boot process/systemd startup?

All, /sys/module/kernel/parameters/consoleblank is set to 0 by default in a change that occurred a while back. Since then, the normal text console will no longer blank or powerdown leaving your monitor on 24/7. This affects a couple of Arch servers I have. Since then I have just been turning the monitors off. Where in the boot/systemd startup can I call setterm to re-enable to normal console blank and powerdown? Remotely I can call: # TERM=linux setterm -blank 5 -powerdown 6 >/dev/tty0 </dev/tty0 to enable blank and powerdown post-boot, but I simply want to set this to be the default. Where best to set this? (passing the kernel parameter 'consoleblank=300' does not enable powerdown, so both must be set) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

However, on the package listing pages [1,2], I do not see any license information regarding how one can use these metadata. Can someone help me here? Thanks! [arch-general] nftables partially broken after kernel update to 4.16.9

Hi all, I just updated one of my computer to 4.16.9. After update, the following nft commands will not work: nft add table ip nat <--- this one works without error nft add chain ip nat prerouting { type nat hook prerouting priority 0 \; } ^ This will give me the following error message: Could not process rule: Device or resource busy. However, the default simple firewall still works. I have another computer that is still on 4.16.8, and the example above works; further, switching back to a lts kernel (4.14.41) also works. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

[arch-general] Arch, blk-mq and megaraid_sas

Greetings, I'm still fooling around with this problem (scsi_mod.use_blk_mq=y fails to boot) but made *some* progress. I've found that it takes about 20-25 seconds after it dumps me into an emergency shell for the disk device nodes to show up, but when they do I can mount the root slice to /new_root, exit, and it boots and runs fine with blk-mq enabled. The thing is, it finds my root drive, which is attached to the first SATA port as /dev/sdcX, putting the 2 arrays I have on the controller as /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1 and no amount of BIOS fiddling seems to help. (board's an ASUS Crosshair-V Formula-Z) I've even disabled the controller as a boot candidate in CMOS and this behavior still exists. To further confound me; for grins I set up RHEL-7.5 on another drive and for some reason I don't understand, it finds the first SATA drive as /dev/sdaX. Is there some way to force Arch to do the same. I'm rather curious if that'll solve the boot issue I'm experiencing with this system.
