[arch-general] Reliability test for hard drives and SSD

Hi there! Good news for all interested in hardware compatibility and reliability. I've started a new project to estimate reliability of hard drives and SSD in real-life conditions based on the SMART data reports collected by Linux users in the Linux-Hardware.org database since 2014. The initial data (SMART reports), analysis methods and results are publicly shared in a new github repository: https://github.com/linuxhw/SMART. Everyone can contribute to the report by uploading probes of their computers by the hw-probe tool! The primary aim of the project is to find drives with longest "power on hours" and minimal number of errors. The following formula is used to measure reliability: Power_On_Hours / (1 + Number_Of_Errors), i.e. time to the first error/between errors. Please be careful when reading the results table. Pay attention not only to the rating, but also to the number of checked model samples. If rating is low, then look at the number of power-on days and number of errors occurred. New drive models will appear at the end of the rating table and will move to the top in the case of long error-free operation. Thanks to ROSA, Arch, Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, Mint, openSUSE, Gentoo users and others who had made this work possible by contribution to the database!

[arch-general] systemd --user enable: Failed to connect to bus: No such file or directory

Hi, I'm trying to create a systemd timer for a user to run duply daily. For one user the enabled worked fine, but another one: systemctl --user enable backup.timer Failed to connect to bus: No such file or directory I have no clue why this happens, systemctl daemon-reload (also with --user) did not fix it. I found a similar issue in the forums, but the solution was to "ln -s" the timer and than rebooting. But I don't think this would be the "correct" solution because "systemctl --user enable" should also work. Any hints? TIA Bjoern

[arch-general] XFCE removable storage unmount notification gone

I'm running three copies of Arch with XFCE as DE. Recently I've noticed that the normal desktop notification when a removable storage device is unmount has gone. As a test, I turned on auto-mount. When a USB drive is plugged in, I'm still getting mount notifications, but nothing when the device is unmounted. The only indication I see that the device has unmounted is a change to the desktop icon. One of my Arch installs isn't used all that often, so hasn't been updated recently. Its still showing both mount and unmount notifications. Trouble is, I can go for fairly long periods without using removable media, so I've no real idea what update caused the change. No idea how to hunt for it either. Anyone else seeing this behaviour? Any ideas how to fix it? Paul.

Hello, Last Saturday 23/6 I did a pacman -Syu and I found out that afterwards paccache had disappeared. I do every now and then a cleanup of the pacman cache but with paccache disappeared I cannot do that anymore. Is it deprecated ? If so is there an alternative for paccache ? [arch-general] Upgrade to Linux 4.17.2 & xorg-server 1.20.0-8 breaks left-mouse in remote Linux desktops

All, This is a strange one, confirmed on two separate Archlinux Guests running in VirtualBox on Archlinux Hosts. I access the running VMs with rdesktop over the LAN. After update to Linux 4.17.2 & xorg-server 1.20.0-8, VirtualBox-5.2.12 starts the Archlinux guests fine, X starts fine in the guests (running fluxbox), and pressing the right-mouse brings up the fluxbox-menu fine, but there is no way to select an item with the left-mouse. The left-mouse click seems to be taken as an escape closing the menu without actually selecting anything. It is as if the left-mouse (and cursor position in general) isn't seen at all (there is no highlight in the menu when the mouse moves over an item) Thankfully, the fluxbox designers made the menu respond to keyboard inputs, so after bringing the fluxbox-menu up, I can up-arrow/down-arrow to an xterm entry and open an xterm by pressing return. When the xterm is open, there is no way to grab the title-bar and move the xterm around, again, as if the left-mouse input isn't seen. An moving the cursor over the bottom of the window will not bring up the taskbar. This effects Linux guest, but not windows guests. I can start Win7 in a VM and opening in remote-desktop works just fine. (all mouse buttons work fine and the cursor position tracks properly bringing up the auto-hidden taskbar on mouseover) Can someone with a similar VirtualBox setup confirm this behavior? I suspect it would effect any Linux Guest that runs X and a desktop and is accessed with rdesktop. For all practical purposes this update prevent accessing Linux guest with rdesktop. I start my virtual machines from a simple bash script using: exec VBoxManage startvm arch_1_64 --type headless (I doubt that makes a difference, but for completeness) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

[arch-general] Issue with browser opening in LXDE

Hi everyone, I am having an issue which is bothering me recently; I have set up properly the default browser within LXDE but the links are not handled properly. What it happens is that I click on a link and a windows opens returning Error: $HOME/$URL: Not existing file or directory Where $HOME is my home path and $URL is the target URL. I have no clue regarding what configuration makes it so. Any suggestions? Hello, A new open project has been created to collect the list of computer hardware devices with poor Linux compatibility based on the Linux-Hardware.org data: https://github.com/linuxhw/HWInfo There are about 29 thousands of depersonalized hwinfo reports (https://github.com/openSUSE/hwinfo) in the repository from Linux-powered computers in various configurations. The device is included into the list of poorly supported devices if there is at least one user probe in which the driver for this device was not found. The column 'Missed' indicates the percentage of such probes. If the number is small, it means that the driver was added in newer versions of the kernel. In this case we show minimal version of the Linux kernel in which the driver was present. Devices are divided into categories. For each category we calculate the ratio of poorly supported devices to the total number of devices tested in this category. I'm running Arch in VBox under Windows and I'm getting similar behavior since I've upgraded xorg-server, xorg-server-common, libinput. I had updated the kernel in a previous step and I don't remember seeing this behavior after upgrading just the kernel (and not xorg-server). I've logged lipinput generated events and they seem ok (all mouse activity is captured by the kernel/libinput driver). However, testing the xorg events (xev) seems consistent with X behavior: no events comming to X from libinp. Another thing: my keyboard input also got stuck for a couple of times. Therefore, maybe we should log a xorg-server bug? P.S.: One partial workaround (making the left-click work): find a region/window where the right-click works and right-click. After that you have a chance of getting the left-click working for a limited (single?) left-click event.
