Guys, Just a note. Most of you are probably a bit younger than I am, but for those with kids who have reached computing age (3+), there are a few kde4 themes and tricks they may really enjoy. The kde4 themes are: Ghost Carbon Neon Glow by FRUiT A thin theme for the adults is "seamless" (just grab the clock from 'Stripeshine' and it really looks cool - see links below) The Desktop Effects that my kids enjoy are: Explosion (or Fall Apart) Magic Lamp explosion and fall apart make the windows shatter into pieces when they are closed and magic lamp makes the windows look like they are being sucked into a magic lamp when they are minimized. Hello, I've been meaning to ask. What's going on with the thunderbird package? Version 2.0.0.23 was released more than month ago, it isn't usual with Arch for such a package to be left outdated for so long (especially since it is a security update). I know I can use ABS and rebuild it myself and I have, but still. Is there a particular reason for the delay? Shouldn't a bug report be created (when package remains out of date for this long)? [arch-general] Pacman problem. "error writing to file" "bad address"

I had problems with ocaml yesterday. After the machine locked up during the updates, I did a hard reset, and ran pacman -Su again. It continued downloading ocaml, but when all the updates were downloaded, it failed to install them, claiming that ocaml was corrupted. I removed the corrupted ocaml as requested, and as I'm on dialup and didn't want to download 38MB of ocaml again last night, I temporarily added an IgnorePkg line for it. Ran pacman -Su again, and all the updates apart from ocaml, and also gnupg2, which couldn't be found, were installed. Today I went to install the ocaml update, having removed it from the IgnorePkg line. It starts to download, but then throws an error as below. error: error writing to file '/var/cache/pacman/pkg/ocaml....' :Bad address Harddrive partition is redlining, and the partly downloaded ocaml file shows as 2GB size. Any ideas on a fix for this problem? As an aside, pacman was updated, but not before the other updates, in case that is what has caused the problem. Nigel.

I have a base install that I have placed on a USB thumb drive. [arch-general] Opera and Java on x86_64

Hello, I've been trying to figure out why Java applets wouldn't work on my system in Opera. (I'm using jre/jdk from [community], not openjdk6 from [extra].) From what I've found out: you set up a "Java directory" in Opera preferences (this path is then written to .opera/javapath.txt) and Opera looks for libjava.so there. At the same time Opera also looks for libjvm.so there (or it is the first place where Opera looks, more on that bellow). The problem is that jre package contains libjava.so in /opt/java/jre/lib/amd64/, while libjvm.so is in "server" subdirectory (/opt/java/jre/lib/amd64/server). That causes Opera not to find it and disable Java completely. I ran strace and these are relevant lines to show where Opera tries to find libjvm.so: open("/opt/java/jre/lib/amd64/libjvm.so", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/usr/lib/opera/10.00/libjvm.so", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/opt/java/jre/lib/amd64/libjvm.so", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/opt/java/jre/lib/amd64//native_threads/libjvm.so", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/etc/ld.so.cache", O_RDONLY) = 107 open("/lib/libjvm.so", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/usr/lib/libjvm.so", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) This lead me to an idea of creating symlink to /opt/java/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.so in /usr/lib/opera/10.00, which worked and now I can see applets in Opera properly. Now the question is, who's fault is it? Opera's? Jre's? And more importantly, can it be solved in a way that doesn't require users to create symlinks as root? Either opera package could create the aforementioned link, only that is ugly for those not using jre package. Or jre package could create the link into /opt/java/jre/lib/amd64/. Or maybe even move the files from the "server" subdirectory to the upper directory (there are only three of them and I have no idea why they are in such a subdirectory)? Does anyone have a better idea? Perhaps adding /opt/java/jre/lib/amd64/server/ to LD_LIBRARY_PATH inside the opera shell script? Ondřej -- Cheers, Ondřej Kučera

I have problems to install nexuiz on my system. Its a 64bit system and up to date synced to ftp://mir1.archlinuxfr.org. This mirror have synced since the last updates of nexuiz and nexuiz-data. If I install nexuiz with pacman -S nexuiz then the following messages are displayed: resolving dependencies... warning: cannot resolve "nexuiz-data", a dependency of "nexuiz" :: the following package(s) cannot be upgraded due to unresolvable dependencies: nexuiz Do you want to skip the above package(s) for this upgrade? [Y/n] Y looking for inter-conflicts... local database is up to date I have searched on the archlinux.org site for the packages and I found: any Community nexuiz-data 2.5.1-3 Orphan 2009-09-30 x86_64 Community nexuiz 2.5.1-3 xyne 2009-09-29 The package exists but pacman cant find it? Archers, I have always liked the opera browser, but one thing that has really sucked about it was the crappy file open/file save dialogs opera comes with. Picking around tonight, I ran across an option in opera's configuration that allows you to choose the file selector dialogs to use. It is cryptic as hell, but I found the commit page for the changes and got the needed information. To make use of real kde4 open/save dialogs in opera, got to the config page by typing "opera:config" into the address bar, the scroll down to "File Selector", then change the setting to "2". The commit notes say: 0 - normal 1 - Qt 2 - GTK For some reason, I couldn't get Qt to work, so I select "2" for GTK, and Bingo! I had usable dialogs in opera (you may need to restart opera). What a relief. If you use opera, it's worth a look. While on the subject, you might want to check out the C00-14, Keramik and crystal_onyx_bull skins. Opera has come a long way in 10.0 -- David C. For this to work, I had to set the package version of device-mapper to 2.02.52 as I found out that the dbscripts can't handle split packages with different pkgver. -Renamed pkgconfig file (close FS#15909) Please test and signoff. [arch-general] Why doesn't Arch show full kernel version in uname-r?

Guys, When I do uname -r to get the kernel name, I never get the full versions information about the installed kernel. Example, tonight, the new kernel is: kernel26-2.6.31.1-1-x86_64 but when I do a uname -r, I only see: "2.6.31-ARCH". That doesn't tell me anything about the minor version, etc. and if that information is wanted, then you have to look at the cache or some other software package that would disclose this. As another example, on an older suse box I have uname -r gives: 2.6.25.20-0.5-pae. That tells me exactly version I'm running. Any reason the rest of the version string inst included in this naming? Hi all, I've installed openproj from AUR and met the following issue: the program runs, but the main GUI window is blank (no buttons, menus - nothing), although the dialog windows appear normal. I don't have much experience with java, and tried both jre and openjdk6 - with the same result. Then I tried to run openproj without any window manager, and it worked! I noticed that openjdk6 warns: when you use a non-reparenting window manager set _JAVA_AWT_WM_NONREPARENTING=1 in /etc/profile.d/openjdk6.sh So the setting of that env. variable indeed helps with openjdk6, but not with jre. [arch-general] Failover to LTS in the Arch boot processt?

Guys, I'm curious. Since there is now an LTS kernel, has anyone thought about adding a few lines of code to the Arch boot process that would provide for automatic failover to the LTS kernel in the event the normal kernel failed to load during the boot process. The thought is to provide redundancy for servers in the case where the regular kernel becomes corrupt (for whatever reason, disk problem, etc...) and a reboot is forced (exhausted UPS, etc..) I don't know what it would take or if it is doable. I had just envisioned adding a trap that catches the failure of the regular kernel to boot, checks for the presence of the LTS kernel, and if installed boots the LTS kernel in this case. I haven't looked deep enough into the Arch boot process to know if it is feasible, but it just seemed like a good bit of extra protection that Arch could provide for server installs where the server operates on the regular kernel but also has LTS installed as a backup. I'll leave it to the gurus to consider. If it's not doable or not worth doing, then just consider it another of my stray thoughts worthy of the DEL key ;-) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Hello, Asunder (in [Community]) has an optional dependency on musepack-tools SV8 (not actually included in the PKGBUILD). Musepack-tools in [Community] is version SV7 while the current stable (SV8) has been available since March. Trying to make a pkgbuild I noticed that it depends on two libraries (libcuefile and libreplaygain) which are obtainable only through musepack's svn. Is this the reason why there is only the previous version in the repos? Regards, JM

It would be nice if it was easily possible to compare a pkgbuild against a corresponding 'official' pkgbuild (from ABS). disclaimer: i haven't thought this through so here are some ideas. consider this a brainstorm - on AUR, many packages are customized versions (patches, vcs versions, alternative compile options,..) of official packages so maybe AUR packagers could fill in an official packagename as 'base' package. the webinterface could then show a diff against the official pkgbuild - maybe this can be done on the makepkg level by passing some flag. it would be less point and click but would work for non-aur pkgbuilds. - everything in 1 big git repo: official packages, community, AUR,.. through branching they can be nicely separated but it would make things easier to generate diffs. dieter

First two patches are somewhat trivial. The third one adds support for uploading packages to multiple architectures. Let me explain the rationale behind the last patch. My workflow goes something like this: 1) sudo makechrootpkg -c -r /opt/arch/stable-i686 2) sudo makechrootpkg -c -r /opt/arch/stable-x86_64 3) scp *pkg* aur.archlinux.org:staging/community 4) source PKGBUILD; svn commit -m "$pkgname $pkgver-$pkgrel random message" 5) archrelease community-i686 6) archrelease community-x86_64 7) ssh aur.archlinux.org /arch/db-community As you can see, I'm doing all steps manually (which is time-consuming and prone to errors). Unless I'm missing an existing way to upload packages to both architectures using commitpkg (via its communitypkg symlink), the third patch can help automate steps 3-6 above. I uploaded one package (that needed updating) using the modified commitpkg and it worked as expected. However, more testing is needed, especially with split packages. Please mv your vimrc/gvimrc files away so that no extraneous config files are executed and try again. Which plugins in particular are you talking about? Can we get an "ls -l ~/.vim/plugin" ?

Listmates, I have been chasing my tail on the madwifi issue and I think I have found the problem. It's not madwifi at all, it's the timezone handling. My box is dual-boot, Arch - Vista. Accordingly, the hardware clock is set to localtime: LOCALE="en_US.utf8" HARDWARECLOCK="local" USEDIRECTISA="no" TIMEZONE="America/Chicago" KEYMAP="us" However, I have been dumped into the recovery console each time I have booted for the past day or so. I wasn't alarmed at first because I have several hard drives for the box and I switch back and forth. One drive just contains linux so the hwclock is set to UTC for that setup and then set two localtime for the two other dual-boot drives. So when I reinstall a drive, it isn't uncommon to need to reset the clock and run fsck to get the hwclock and system happy for the new config. While trouble-shooting the madwifi issue, I booted again this morning and was again dumped into the recovery console to run fsck again. Looking at the clock, something had set the clock backwards 5 hours. (American/Chicago -6, +1 for daylight savings = -5 tz offset). This should not have happened. I know this is related to something in a recent update. The pacman log is here: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/Archlinux/config/wireless/pacman.log.bz2 I noticed this morning that another tzdata update: tzdata-2009m-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz But this did fix the problem. It seems no matter what I do, each time I boot, the time gets adjusted backwards by the zoneinfo offset. I have set/confirmed the hardware and sys clocks: [13:05 alchemy:/home/david] # date Tue Sep 22 13:09:56 CDT 2009 [13:09 alchemy:/home/david] # date -u Tue Sep 22 18:09:59 UTC 2009 [13:09 alchemy:/home/david] # hwclock -r Tue 22 Sep 2009 01:10:06 PM CDT -1.000347 seconds and I have set hwclock --localtime and confirmed the same time setting with --systohc, but still, each time I boot, the time is 5 hours in the past. I have confirmed /etc/localtime is in fact the same as /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Chicago: [13:10 alchemy:/home/david] # diff /etc/localtime /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Chicago So, I'm stumped. I certainly haven't changed any of the Arch settings for timezone handling since I installed arch in what -- March/April? So why all of a sudden is Arch subtracting 5 hours from my hwclock on either shutdown or boot? I know the checks are done in /etc/rc.sysinit and /etc/rc.shutdown, but what could have changed to make Arch want to treat the box as if the time were set to UTC? What else to check? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Listmates, I'm not sure where to start troubleshooting this problem. For months and months, ever since I installed Arch, my Atheros wifi (through ath0) has always just worked right out of the box. No biggie. You setup your /etc/network.d/mywpa.conf and add your config to the NETWORKS entry and then each time I would turn on my box, up came the network. That is, until the updates this past week or so. My config is still the same. The mywpa.conf file is: CONNECTION="wireless" INTERFACE=wlan0 SCAN="yes" SECURITY="wpa" ESSID="skyline" KEY="notmyrealkey" IP="dhcp" TIMEOUT=20 My rc.conf setting hasn't changed: eth0="dhcp" INTERFACES=(!eth0) gateway="default gw 192.168.6.13" ROUTES=(!gateway) NETWORKS=(!main mywpa.conf) DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network net-profiles hal @ntpd @sshd @crond @netfs @avahi- daemon @mysqld !postfix !dovecot !httpd !samba @cups kdm3) Now I boot my box and I get nothing but the "lo" interface brought up. What gives? To comply with the new warning about modprobe "blacklist", etc. all of the specified and empty files were moved from /etc/modprobe.d to /root/tmp. My wireless needs the ath_pci module and the ath5k module has always caused problems, so I added the "!ath5k" entry to the modules line before the ath_pci declaration and ath_pci is correctly loaded on boot, but still no wlan0 or ath0 devices are created. As a work-around while this is being sorted, I have been brining the device up with ifconfig ath0 up, then starting wpa_supplicant manually and then finally calling dhcpcd manually to get an IP. What in the world could have changed in the past week or so that is presenting my wireless from being brought up at boot?? Any help or pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated. Hi, since 2.6.30.x (i could not exactly say if also with the latest 2.6.29.x) stock kernels i have a terrible slow ethernet transfer rate on my old Thinkpad T22 (Intel EtherExpress PRO/100 SP, module e100). Normal transfer rate ex. to a mirror is for me ~700Kb/s but i got only ~80-90 Kb/s. And a bunch of RX overruns and frame errors. I could solve it by following workarounds: a) Disable ACPI (acpi=off), but this is the ugliest workaround. b) When i generate CPU-Load (ex: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/null) the transfer rate goes immediately up to normal and the RX error rate increasing stops. Stopping the dd the rate goes down again. So i thought it could be a timer/IRQ problem. I tried different acpi= and pci= kernel parameters without success. Also tried to isolate the Ethernet device to a non-shared IRQ. c) Current working solution is if i use nohz=off as kernel param. But testing with an 2.6.28 kernel i have installed on this TP there is CONFIG_NO_HZ=y also set (diff is only that this kernel has CONFIG_HZ=1000 and 2.6.30/31 CONFIG_HZ=300, but AFAIK if bootet with NOHZ these settings are ignored (tickless)). So there must be a signifikant change in >= 2.6.30 (tested 2.6.31 from testing also). Anyone has an idea to solve it without nohz parameter? I also could report it to LKML if this seems a bug (for me it is). Regards Gerhard

The PKGBUILD at /var/abs/extra/postgresql-libs has version 8.4.0-1 (a version that was in testing a little while back), while the version in extra is still 8.3.7-2. This seems very dangerous since it would be easy for a non-testing user to give themselves an unintended soname bump. I'm guessing this happens because that's both the trunk and extra version for this package in svn? Might it be worthwhile to backout revs 49331 and 49332, which have this change and nothing more? Or am I missing something here?

Anybody had some similar experience? Is there any fix for this or I need to start from begining and to search for scripts/plugins again and to install them from scratch? Thanks. A bunch of other mirrors still haven't synced at all since community was repaired, and are now 3+ days stale. Is there something else going on now? What's up with Arch's mirror network?

Hi , catalyst was removed from the repos for months (now available from the AUR) but the build files are still in svn trunk : http://repos.archlinux.org/viewvc.cgi/catalyst/trunk/ That causes tools like pbget (which can search for build files in svn then AUR) to fetch the old broken unsupported build files instead of the updated ones from AUR . catalyst-utils is still in trunk too . Shouldn't a maintenance script catch this ?

Hello list, I just installed archlinux on a very old laptop of mine PIII at 500MHz with 128MB RAM. I am planning on using it as a desktop... I should mention two facts. First is that I installed from CD succesfully without problems. I remember in the past the installer would fail with such amount of ram but it seems today's squashfs goodness is paying back... So what are the current minimum requirements? The other is that I had trouble finding a truly lightweight X terminal (there were times when xterm was considered bloated ;) so I packaged myself rxvt. Most other distributions offer it so in case you decide to include it I attach the PKGBUILD. I'm wondering, what's the oldest equipment you run archlinux on? Is it for desktop or server usage? Hello all! During my installation trials for ArchLinux 2009.02, I've stumbled upon some issues that I describe below. First one (the most minor and insignificant one), is that when you login as root in the installation system, it says as MOTD that you should read the documentation found in /arch/<some-file-name>, when in fact the file is in /arch/docs/<some-file-name>. Anyway. The second problem is a little bit more tricky... I want to install ArchLinux under a domU Xen virtual machine. So the only method (without using HVM) is to boot from the USB disk image, and try to perform the installation over serial the console. The problem is that by default ArchLinux does not include ttyS0 in inittab or in securetty, so I have to manually mount the disk as loopback, end edit the files appropriately... Thus my feature request is: could you include in the default install images also the ttyS0 and ttyS1 as usable terminals? Thanks, Ciprian.

KMS console problem with non-us (french) keyboard Hi all, I am presently using an up-to-date Archlinux on a laptop with an Intel 915 chipset. In the past I have tried KMS succesfully to a certain extent: for example the french letter "é" is not correctly displayed when I type it in console althought it is correctly displayed under X11. Apart from this, all seems to function perfectly. With the same setup in /etc/rc.conf there is no problem to type and display "é" in console if KMS is disabled. I was thinking this to be a lack of maturity of KMS, but I just tried KMS on a Slackware 13.0 (2.6.29 stock kernel) freshly installed on the same laptop: definitely no problem. Any hint? My partitions looked like this: /dev/sda1 (/) /dev/sda2 (/home) /dev/sda3 (swap) After I deleted the / partition and got this: /dev/sda1 (Windows) free space /dev/sda2 (/home) /dev/sda3 (swap) And i need this: /dev/sda1 (Windows) /dev/sda2 (/) /dev/sda3 (/home) /dev/sda4 (swap) How do I change home partition /dev/sda2 to /dev/sda3? Hello, I cannot mount a data dvd. mount /dev/dvd /media/dvd mount: unknown filesystem type 'iso9660' I noticed that isofs module, which provides iso9660 is not loaded in my system. Inserting it, however, results in: FATAL: Error inserting isofs (/lib/modules/2.6.30-ARCH/kernel/fs/isofs/isofs.ko): Invalid module format This is an up-to-date non-testing system. [arch-general] Suspend to RAM -- reboots instead of resuming

Hello All, I recently put a new SATA drive in my computer and decided to start with a fresh install of Arch. Before this upgrade, suspend to RAM worked fine (although I don't know if it was with kernel or uswsusp). (I should say, I'm not sure if the SATA upgrade is a cause of my problem or simply a coincidence) Although I copied my /etc/suspend.conf and /etc/pm from the old drive I must be missing something because it's not working anymore (nothing else apart from the hard drive has changed). When I do pm-suspend, the computer correctly powers down and the power LED goes from green to orange... when I wake up the computer however, instead of resuming, it reboots. So far, I've tried the following: echo mem > /sys/power/state: suspends, reboots instead of resuming pm-suspend --auto-quirks: suspends, reboots instead of resuming s2ram -n: tells me the system is unknown s2ram -f: suspends but reboots instead of resuming s2ram -f -a 3 and other variations: same, reboots instead of resuming The pm-suspend.log file is not very helpful -- it shows that the computer correctly suspends, but the last entry is "performing suspend" and there's no information on resume of course because the computer restarts instead of resuming. To rule out modules, I tested a minimal setup explained in the SUSE doc: * edit the grub kernel command to start only bash: init=/bin/bash * mount /sys and /proc by hand: mount /sys && mount /proc * manually suspend to RAM: echo mem > /sys/power/state Again, the power LED goes orange, but when I wake up the computer it restarts. I've tried different BIOS settings in case I had accidentally changed something there, but it made no difference. It seems the resume hook isn't working -- even though I re-mkinitcpio'ed the kernel images with the resume hook (also tried the uresume hook -- I'm a bit confused about this, though I think uresume is for uswsusp and resume for kernel suspend). Is there a way of seeing what happens when the wake-up event occurs? I tried adding a hook in /etc/pm/sleep.d for the resume event, but of course it's not reached, so I get nothing out. Any suggestions on how to debug this issue further would be much appreciated. I've been staring at the problem so long that I might have missed something obvious... Listmates, One shortcoming that really irks me (and a whole lot of other laptop users) is the lack of an ATI driver for the meager hardware on most laptops. I don't know what the statistics are, but just from an educated guess standpoint, I bet that 50-65% of the current (in use and less than 3 years old) graphic adapters in laptops is ATI. (either Xpress or mobility Radeon chips). The difference in performace between using the radeonhd driver and the fglrx driver is 6-fold, only made that much worse by kde4 demands on the graphic subsystem. I don't know if there is any political/developer will for this, but for a majority of the ati laptop hardware out there (and desktop for that matter), we have the fglrx driver that is now static as of the 9-3 (version 8.953) release of the "legacy" driver with ATI abandoning driver support for all pre 2400 series cards. In the past, the main reason for not supporting the ATI driver (not just Arch) was that it was too much of a moving target, requiring considerable work on the distros part to keep up with library changes, etc. Now with the driver static, I wonder if it might not be worth looking into to see if it is even feasable to try and make it work with the current arch setup. ( I know I'm not smart enough in this area to be of any use. ) The reason I bring this up I running arch on one drive I have for my laptop, and I'm limited to the radeonhd driver. It's getting better, but it has two achiles heels: (1) performance, and (2) heat (lots of it). Ultimately, the radeonhd driver will crack the black box and have a great driver, but currently, the combination of the issues is bad enough, I keep an old copy of suse 11 on another driver for use in my laptop, for no other reason than it has the working fglrx driver and I can work with my laptop without the fan noise and heat under my left palm caused by the lack of downclocking/powerdown of the unused gpu circuitry experienced with the radeonhd driver. I don't know if it is even worth looking into, but I do know that for laptop users, if Arch had a working fglrx driver, that would be one key point a lot of laptop users would be willing to switch for. Just a stray thought, so take it for what its worth. As for the current, still maintained, ATI driver for 2400+ series cards, good luck, it's still moving pretty fast.... -- David C. Listmates, One of my friends from the openSuSE list was trying his first archilinux install and ran into an issue. IWell, my first attempt at installing Arch Linux did not go well. The net install went OK but when it came to the, I guess, configuration of the system, things went bum-up: the network configuration files could not be read and therefore could not be written, or something along these lines. don't know if this will explain the problem fully, but if this describes a common problem with the latest network install cd's, then if somebody could point me in the right direction, I'll pass the answer along. [arch-general] Problems with most recent gstreamer updates

Hey everybody, I was wondering whether anybody else had trouble since the update to extra/gstreamer0.10-bad-plugins 0.10.14-1 and extra/gstreamer0.10-good-plugins 0.10.16-1 using applications that make use of gstreamer. A couple of people including me seem to have issues with it that cause all gstreamer applications to fail. I'm bringing this up on the mailing list because I can't seem to find the root cause of the problem by myself and because gstreamer is a critical part of any Gnome setup (gnome-settings-daemon fails without it, for example). The problem on running gstreamer applications is this: Error re-scanning registry , child terminated by signal Even gnome-settings-daemon in debug mode has little more relevant info than this error message. Since gstreamer itself probably doesn't provide detail logs of what went wrong, I'm having trouble finding the cause. The gstreamer bug tracker doesn't have a bug filed on this so I don't know whether this is an Arch problem or an upstream problem. I'm trying to install psychosynth from AUR. Ogre is one of the deps, but the comments on the psychosynth page say to compile Ogre with devIL, not freeimage, which is the default image loader. Configure says that I can set an option, --disable-freeimage, but where do I set this option when using makepkg to build Ogre? I have installed devil, so it's ready to be used by the configure script, which includes instructions for both freeimage, and devIL. Thanks for any help with this. Nigel.

Hello, I searched the forum and the bug database for this and did not find anything about it. I have a problem with Konsole. I am using KDE and the binary nvidia driver. The composite effets are enabled and my system is up to date. Sometimes Konsole's window disappears partially. Then I have to minimize and maximize the window to renew it. I did not recognize this behaviour when KDE 4.2 was installed on my system. Does anybody have similar problems? It is not a big problem at all. But it is a little bit annoying. Thanks for your help! Hi there :) I searched the web but I can't find any about IPv6 in rc.conf. I saw in Debian you can put some v6 stuff in /etc/network/interfaces. So I thought maybe I can do the v6 stuff in rc.conf but how? And can I use v4 and v6 at the same time in the same rc.conf? Next question is can I put multiple IPv6 addresses in rc.conf? [arch-general] Maximum JFS file (not filesytem) size

Dear fellow Archers, I tarred up a couple filesystems and piped the tar stream through ssh to a remote computer where I dd'ed it to a file. This a common backup method I've been using for a few years now if I'm going to wipe a system and start over. I'm using JFS on the arch linux system that was being copied to. The resulting file ended up being 137G (which is about right based on the source filesystem usage). du --human --total a4b4.tar 137G a4b4.tar 137G total However, I can only restore from 63G of the tar ball, so I attempted to see how much could be read. dd if=a4b4.tar of=/dev/null dd: reading `a4b4.tar': Input/output error 123166576+0 records in 123166576+0 records out 63061286912 bytes (63 GB) copied, 1193.69 s, 52.8 MB/s There were no critical files in that tar ball that are not kept elsewhere, that is not the issue. At this point I can consider what is past the 63G point in the tarball to unrecoverable, which is fine. I tried skipping the first 63GB, but that does not work. dd if=a4b4.tar skip=123166576 of=/dev/null dd: reading `a4b4.tar': Input/output error 0+0 records in 0+0 records out 0 bytes (0 B) copied, 27.2438 s, 0.0 kB/s It seems like it took a while to figure out that it could not perform this operation. The box in question is running an OpenVZ patched 2.6.27 kernel, but that might not have anything to do with it. Yeah, I know, I could have used bzip and made 2 separate files, I could have used rsync -av, I could have checked tarball before wiping the source files systems, etc, that is not the point here. Now that I know that JFS on my setup has a 63GB file size limit, I know now to accommodate for that in the future. I'm mainly just curious on how the system could write a larger file than it can read. Dwight

[arch-general] Assisting Chriss or adopting his CD as a separait project for Arch blind Users

Hi, As one of Chris Branon's friends, and as one who has submitted valuable feedback, I'd like to see Chrisses CD get more support from the Arch team leads, etc. I also have another suggestion. Why couldn't core snapshots be automatically generated, and Chrisses CD/and the other official images could be all updated? As newer kernels came out, we could even get weekly/monthly netiso images automatically wich each core update, so that we'd never have to worry about waiting for 2 3 4 months or whatever. :) Just a suggestion, only. I don't expect that this could be automated. I'm just suggesting something, nothing more. But the fact that this CD of chirsses is unofficial isn't great. He does a wonderful job. I'd like to see him get more people who could build CDs, or whatever. That way he doesn't have to do all the work, and can focuss on maintaing Speakup/etc. Maybe an #Arch-Accessibility channel should be created with an associated mailing list. Your thoughts? I welcome anyone including Chris and anyone else who feels that Accessibility is important to comment on this. I will CC this to Arch-General as well so that the community in general can be made aware of this. Also, I wanted to ask why weekly builds couldn't be done? I'm talking about autobuilds, btw, taht use your isoscripts. I have seen other distros that offer accessibilty I.e. GRML, etc, wich have automatic CDs. Gentoo now has minimal stage3 tarballs, and automated snapshots, etc. Just curious why Arch hasn't done somethinglike this. Thanks so much all, happy arching, and have fun! :) P.s. My favorite feature of the LiveCD (I've only used Chrisses bc I can't use the others) is that you folks don't start anything we don't want. [arch-general] Stuff in /etc/cron.d/ won't work?

Hey there, I just noticed that I just couldn't get cron to properly execute stuff in /etc/cron.d/ no matter what I did. Let's say I have /etc/cron.d/lol with this content: * * * * * root echo "lol" >> /tmp/omg and restart crond afterwards, the crond log tells me that cron actually runs this command every minute without a problem. Sadly, this isn't the case and the file at /tmp/omg is created but remains without contents. In contrast, if I put an executable script to /etc/cron.hourly/lol with the content: echo "lol" >> /tmp/omg then the file at /tmp/omg fills up with lots of "lol"s after a couple of hours. It also works fine if I put it into the crontab. Now, I'd like to be able to use /etc/cron.d/ as well because it seems more transparent to me. Is there anything I do inherently wrong? -- Sven-Hendrik

The reason I ask is because I believe this module is used only for usb printers. Since cups no longer needs this module the only application that I can think of that would need this module would be p910nd. p910nd is a small printer daemon intended for diskless workstations that does not spool to disk but passes the job directly to the printer. I believe there might only be a few people that use this in arch. Those who do use it can compile usblp. It just seems to be more logical and cleaner to remove the module if there is only a very small user base. ~pyther

They've simply changed the way the system is packaged. Wait a day or so, and your mirror should catch up, and the dependencies won't be a problem any more. I did the upgrade this morning (without any dependency issues), and everything works great, and a couple bug fixes were very evident. Everything worked fine until I changed the .offlineimaprc to fetch mails from multiple accounts. Hi, latex which was fine till last update is having an unmet libpoppler dependency. When I tried to install libpoppler then the complaint was that they are not in the correct format. So I guess the following needs to be done. 1) Add libpoppler as a dependency to latex 2) recompile libpoppler with latest gcc which ever it is. I can file a bug report but since the server is down I will wait. Meanwhile did any one else also notice this problem ? Regards ppk

Hi all! This email is divided in two parts: a curiosity and a problem. They are somewhat related, so I'm writing both together. The curiosity: Since I've installed Arch Linux in this notebook (in March), the time it takes to load the modules highly varies. With the current archinit scripts, it ranges from incredible 150ms to incredible 10 000ms. With the older archinit scripts, the time weren't exactly the same, but it did vary a lot, too. At first I thought a "cold boot" would take more than a reboot, but both things are completely unrelated: a cold boot can take only 150ms and a reboot 9 500ms and vice versa. I don't see this as a big problem, I'm just curious to know why. If anyone thinks I should report a bug, tell me what other kind of piece of information would be useful and I'll do it. The problem: Completely unrelated to the question above, the wireless card sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. It's unrelated because if the boot takes 150ms, the wireless may or may not work. The same applies if the boot takes 10 000ms. When I say it doesn't work, I mean that netcfg will fail and print an error: 'eth0: interface doesn't support scanning' Yes, I know it's weird, but I'm using the broadcom-wl module, and it sets eth0 as the wireless card. [arch-general] Howto adjust font scaling in Arch? All fonts look a bit big and fat?

Listmates, I'm looking for a way to adjust the font size scaling (no not the control center font size) so all the fonts in my kde4 desktop look right. Basically, in Arch kde4 on my laptop, all fonts look 1pt too big. Case in point, on suse, I have all my desktop fonts set to 9pt, but with Arch, I have the size set at 8pt and they still look bigger than the suse fonts (same fonts of course, same subpixel hinting setting, etc...). Is there somewhere that some type of scaling is done that I can tweak to try and fix this? The effect of the larger scaling makes everthing from the kmail message list to the basket notepad fonts look cramped. Any thoughts? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. This is our new Long Time Supported Kernel recommended for server usage and our general fallback kernel that already made it into the distrowatch news section :) It should now be ready to move into the repos. Please install it along the kernel26 and add it to your grub/lilo section. Give it a try but don't expect any 3rd party modules or late grafics stuff for desktops. Only full Ext4 support has been added for fallback reasons. Please report if you can boot well and if dmesg is clean. Choice of repo. Most devs say it belongs to core. I'm fine with that. Is it safe to push it to core? Some people have concerns about the iso image size. -Andy

I have exactly the same problem here. One of my two external encrypted USB drives doesn't have a /dev/disk/by-uuid symlink with udev-145-1. However all other /dev/disk/by-* links for this drive are present. It is always the same drive that is affected. I hate to beg for favors from people who are already doing plenty for me for free, but could some kind dev update the mpc package? It's now two major versions (or what passes for "major" at musicpd) out of date, and only a simple pkgver / md5sum change. I'd ask its maintainer (pizzapunk) directly, but I remember him being pointed out as an absentee in a recent thread anyway.

Hi everybody, I was wondering if there's a means to specify, in rc.conf or somewhere else, that you never want to set your hardware clock. That's because, on Xen-based VPS, the hardware clock is handled on the hypervisor level, and /etc/cron.hourly/adjtime gives warnings such as: Cannot access the Hardware Clock via any known method. Use the --debug option to see the details of our search for an access method. An easy workaround is to delete this file but it will come back after each initscripts update. Does anybody know a solution to prevent that? -- catwell

Hi, I have a little server at home which has an encrypted disk mounted at /home/media/1tbdisk I added it to crypttab and the decrypted dm device to fstab, but i have the following problems: 1) the keymap upon luksOpen is qwerty, even though i have my keymap set in rc.conf and added 'keymap' to hooks in rc.conf I ran `mkinitcpio -p kernel26` in the shell that the init(script) gave me when it tried to mount /dev/mapper/decrypted (after i mounted -o remount,ro /). Do i really have to run mkinitcpio again from the real system and reboot? (i can do it, but would like to know what might have gone wrong here) 2) even when i'm sure i'm typing correct pass (in qwerty) it doesn't unlock. i added dm_crypt to modules in rc.conf but no change. it asks the pass 3 times and then fstab tries to mount the nonexisting device and i get the shell If i comment out the entries in crypttab and fstab and unlock+mount myself after boot, it works fine. 3) even if for some reason one fails to unlock the volume, it would be nice that the boot process can continue. maybe there could also be a timeout: not unlocked within 60s, continue boot process. is this possible to do or would it make things too complicated? 4) suppose one can fix the stuff in the shell that you get from the fstab hook, is it possible to just resume boot instead of rebooting? 5) any other thoughts about this kind of setup? I know it's possible if you have IPMI to do serial over lan and type your password from anywhere around the globe during bootup. but i don't have ipmi, so if no-one can unlock the volume in x seconds, it can continue booting. Today I've added a 2nd kernel to our svn called "kernel26-lts". It should help to make you less caring about kernel updates. The intention is to 1) have a 2nd choice for the kernel pkg that suits better in certain situations and 2) it can be a fallback when a reboot after updating the core "kernel26" fails more detailed: 1) pkgdesc="The Linux Kernel and modules - stable longtime supported kernel package suitable for servers" The current longtime supported kernel version is 2.6.27.xx, right now we are at 2.6.27.31. The pkgdesc should clearly say what it should become in the future. Server systems won't be forced to take the risk to fail on the next boot after each kernel update. Modifications will be very small in the future within its lifecycle. The kernel configuration is based on the last .27.x config form our core pkg with small changes it has become in later versions + optimizations for server usage taken from here: http://www.serverwatch.com/tutorials/article.php/3715071/Ubuntu-Server--Ker… main changes are: 100Hz, no preempt, deadline I/O schedular. There will be no 3rd party modules. And no further patching. 2) a fallback kernel für almost everybody: a long requested feature. Everybody can install it along the core "kernel26" pkg and add lilo/grub entries for the "lts" kernel. Whenever an update of a future kernel26 will fail you won't be forced to boot with a rescue stick or cd. This should help a lot. attention: 2.6.27 kernel haven't had full ext4 support. I myself run a desktop with an ext4 / partition created with a later kernel version. the "lts" kernel is not capable to boot into this filesystem! But on real servers I guess everybody will wait a bit longer to use ext4. For the future it is planned to probably add Xen support to this or an outsplitted pkg. I will upload packages for both architectures to testing over the next days. Please discuss when you want see changes to the config file (x86_64 is done, i686 is not ready so far). -Andy

In suse there is a package called 'grubonce' which you issue from the command line giving the grub entry you want to boot next. Listmates, There is a bug in the latest vim. Something prevents split windows from completely closing requiring an additional :q to exit. Take for example any two text files. I'll use /boot/grub/menu.lst and menu.lst.sav. To confirm the bug, do the following: cd /boot/grub vim menu.lst :split menu.lst.sav ## you now have both windows open with menu.lst.sav on top [1] :q (to exit menu.lst.sav, you get --No lines in buffer-- msg) [2] :q (to exit menu.lst, the syntax highlighting is killed but no exit??) Listmates, I have had my updates hand horribly over the past several days. So bad, I thought there was a bug in pacman. I have even canceled some with ctrl+c out of frustration. I think I just found out why. I was looking to download the i686 lts kernel so I was browsing the various repositories to see which one had it. I tried to access packages on archlinux.unixheads.org, and access to the repository did the same thing -- just hung. The little spinner in firefox was just going round-and-round. Looking at the site it was accessing, I under stood why: http://www.google-analytics.com/ Evidently some of the archlinux repos are using google-analytics to trac web traffic to the packages and this is killing access to the repository. Listmates, I like to keep the current set of updated packages in /var/cache/pacman/pkg but not have all of the older duplicates in there as well. However, I don't want to delete the old packages either, in case I need to downgrade a package. I simply want to move the older packages to a backup location on a different partition so I'm not filling up / with several extra gigabytes of older packages. To do this I adapted a script that I used to clean duplicates from my local rpm repository and changed the script to deal with package-name-v.e.r-arch.pkg.tar.gz instead of rpm-name-v.e.r-s.u.b-arch.rpm. (Thankfully arch just uses the pkg directory instead of a nested spiderweb under /var/cache/zypp/packages/.....) The script for finding and moving older duplicate packages is named fduppkg and is fairly self-explanitory. Running without arguments gives the options: 23:33 supersff:~/scripts/file> fduppkg Usage: <search dir> [ -d -l logfile -s -v ] Searches <search dir> for duplicate pkgs and moves duplicate files to [dup_dir] or <search dir>/duplicates by default. -d | --dupdir Used to specify directory to hold duplicate rpms -l | --logfile Specify the log file name (default ./duplicates.log) -s | --silent Don't output anything to stdout, just log results -v | --verbose Output information showing which files are kept and not moved You should note that the actual check for older/newer uses the file modification date to make the decision rather than parsing the version number digit-by-digit. So if you have done something nutty like moving all the packages out of /var/cache and then copying them back so all the file modification times are the same, this script won't work. (I could see it happening) If you have a need for something like this, you can grab the script at: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/Archlinux/scripts/fduppkg Since the script if fairly generic for packages, if you have a number of directories you want to operate on, you can just call the script from another script that sets the command line inputs. hey dudes. I fail (sort of) at pairing my pc with my phone via bluetooth. (sony ericsson k810i, pc uses broadcom dongle) I have a system where everything is up to date, bluez is installed etc. the configs are all pretty much default. I did need to enable HID2HCI_ENABLE="true" in /etc/conf.d/bluetooth otherwise the bluetoothd daemon would abort immediately after startup ( ? ) I can do `hcitool scan` and see my phone. Hey there, I just noticed that I just couldn't get cron to properly execute stuff in /etc/cron.d/ no matter what I did. Let's say I have /etc/cron.d/lol with this content: * * * * * root echo "lol" >> /tmp/omg and restart crond afterwards, the crond log tells me that cron actually runs this command every minute without a problem. Sadly, this isn't the case and the file at /tmp/omg is created but remains without contents. In contrast, if I put an executable script to /etc/cron.hourly/lol with the content: echo "lol" >> /tmp/omg then the file at /tmp/omg fills up with lots of "lol"s after a couple of hours. It also works fine if I put it into the crontab. Now, I'd like to be able to use /etc/cron.d/ as well because it seems more transparent to me. Is there anything I do inherently wrong? -- Sven-Hendrik

Hello all, I see that some GStreamer packages have been outdated, attached you can find the PGKBUILD's with upgraded version and some other modifications detailed below. (Coudn't find if this is already discused) I also had a question about the gst-plugins-base/good/bad/ugly packages. I see that they are now split-up in 2 packages (ex: gstreamer0.10-base and gstreamer0.10-base-plugins). The second one contains the plugins depending on external libraries and the first one contains libraries and plugins without external dependencies. Typically a user has all gstreamer plugins installed, or at least he is using some plugins from every package. So I propose that we also merge these 2 plugins to make it easier to maintain and match upstream packages. Does this sound logic or do I miss something? [arch-general] PHP 5.3 - just takes a bit of reconfiguring, but then works fine

Listmates, In case any of you pull php 5.3 from testing and suddenly have all your web apps die, I thought I would pass along a few heads-up to save you reinventing the wheel. First Peirre Schmitz put out a few notes on the arch-dev list that provided the answer, but there was a lot that had to be read between the lines to appreciate the notes. I run several php intensive apps (eGroupware, Gallery2, and to a lesser extent squirrelmail) all of which went south when the 5.3 upgrade occurred (well, all of php went south with the upgrade, but it was purely a new configuration issue). The short version of what is required to put php5.3 in place? (1) You need to use the php.ini.pacnew file you will find in /etc/php and merge your php.ini setting into it; (2) You will need to rework the following 2 settings: open_basdir = include_path = ".:..." Specifically, you will need to pay careful attention to any trailing '/'s you have on the path definitions (or prefixes in the case of include_path) because any trailing slash now prevents php from descending further than the specified directory in search of any includes or opens it is looking for. This is what really cost a bit to time to chase down. Note, the changes are not all 5.3, but the effect of the changes in 5.3 will expose any error in the entries. I had 5.2.9 running fine, but I had a few extra '/'s terminating search paths that somehow worked, but in 5.3 that wouldn't fly. (3) PHP5.3 split php for arch into a number of different packages. From Pierre's post: php php-apache php-cgi php-curl php-enchant php-gd php-gmp php-intl php-ldap php-mcrypt php-odbc php-pear php-pgsql php-pspell php-snmp php-sqlite php-tidy php-xsl You will need to install what you need and see the post in arch-dev for specifics of sqlite, (what's needed for Ver. 2, and Ver 3.), etc... (4) After you install the packages, you will now need to specifically uncomment any of the extensions you need to load or have loadable from withing php.ini. (eg. extension=mysql.so; extension=odbc.so; extension=openssl.so, etc...) After going through this bit of unintended learning, PHP 5.3 is working smoothly as far as I can tell, logs are clean, a few derprecated warning for things that will disappear in php 6, but other than that, nothing. The last issue I found in php 5.3 is it checks for the absence mysql_free_result after mysql queries and warns if it isn't found. This may be something I just didn't notice in the earlier releases, but it provided the opportunity to clean up a few. That's it, hope it saves somebody a few extra minutes of time. -- David C. Listmates, I was going to test the nvidia driver fan issue by downgrading to the next older version of the driver with: [19:34 archangel:/srv/www] # pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/nvidia-180.51-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/nvidia-utils-180.51-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz loading package data... checking dependencies... error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies) :: nvidia: requires kernel26<2.6.30 But as somewhat expected, I got the dependency error shown above. It may not be possible, but if the nvidia install on arch just compiles the driver against the kernel, then I don't see why not. But then again if it is something that has changed from a module to a part of the kernel during that period of time (or something similar), then I could see why the older driver couldn't be compiled against the new kernel. Before trying anything I would regret, I thought I would ask. Is it possible? If so, how? Is "-d" OK here? Listmates: Very strange bug with gwenview. I have bugged it with kde, but would like any confirmation and insight you might have that will help narrow the bug down. Here is the description pulled from my bug report: Gwenview has been completely reinstalled and the corruption still occurs. In fact, I have produced 3 corrupt files in a row using this scenario. The latest: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/openSUSE_bugs/kde4/screenshots/gwenview… Try this scenario and see if you still get a good crop: (1) Grab a screenshot of a window in ksnapshot (2) Choose "Open with" -> Gwenview (3) Crop the image, after pressing the final "crop", choose "File" -> "Save As" (4) Save to a smb share (5) Confirm file is corrupt or good and let me know. I tried saving the file with gwenview to my local disk and also saving it to the smb share. Both using the "File" -> "Save As" after a crop. Hullo all, I tried to ask this a couple of days ago and for some reason it ended up as a flame war about chakra between people I don't even know and I'm not sure what triggered it, so I'll try again. I've used arch for many years and always been happy (I actually run it on 5-6 machines which I maintain ok). My laptop got a libreadline file problem after upgrading, so after backing up I just decided to reformat the drive the the latest arch linux iso I downloaded last weekend intending hence to use kde4.3, and have been spectacularly unsuccessful in getting the drive formatted using the install iso. with the /arch/setup program I tried auto to do the whole drive (it was a brand new seagate 500gig HDD) > no action, just sat there. I tried using CFDISK > create partitions > then the setting the mount points didn't recognise any partitions were there. After a couple of reboots and retries it did recognise the partition was there, but wouldn't let me allocate mount points. On one occasion it allowed me to allocated mount points but then just died. To prove to myself that it wasn't the drive I tried the chakra alpha on it which recognised the partitions and installed ok but this I've removed as I want arch proper. I'm at a loss to know where to head because this is my software developement machine (private not in any way related to a business) and I've been reduced to using xfce4 (not that bad actually) on an old drive, but all my email is in kmail (7+ years of it) which I don't want to have to import into thunderbird and kmail won't run on the machine with the corrupted installation. So, is there anyone who could give me a hint as where to proceed - I've tried re-downloading the iso and reburning it and the md5's are ok. Rescue disks or Knoppix read the partitions fine. Is there any way I can paritition and format with an external tool, then use the command line to install a base arch system so I can bypass the installer? Any help, even if you answer off list would be appreciated. Regards Richard

Listmates, I have been chasing an issue on Arch having to do with the 8800GT in it. A couple of weeks ago there was a driver update from Nvidia that has caused the fans on my video card to really take off. With all drivers before that there wasn't a noise issue. The box is dual boot with openSuSE 11.0 so I can confirm that this is an arch/nvidia issue. Has anyone else noticed fan speed increases on your NV cards here lately? Arch..... Just wondering what phone apps people are using with KDE 4.3 on x86_64. I'd rather not go and install all the x86 libs for the 32bit version of Skype. I have a lot of upgrades this week, just want to be able to call into a conference call with VOIP. (so I can use a headset, the speaker phone keeps the wife awake at night.) Massive headache, well, actually it wasn't an upgrade it was a brand new HDD (kept the old one). all this started when I was stupid enough to install scribus > libreadline version problems and couldn't back track, Some other file was somehow affected and needed to run a terminal because then my arch isntall wouldn't boot at all, so I opted to buy another disk for my laptop and do a new install as I felt that at somepoint I'd have to upgrade anway. I'd appreciate a bit of advice. 1) the libjepg.7 vs 62 problem - I've exhaustively tried every solution over the last few hours on the forums and cannot get kmail to work - loads but 'poof; up in smoke once the gui appears 2) Dolphin - I really liked konqueror - can one still install this as a file browser. I note there is a kdebase-konqueror package, using this > multiple 'file exists in the filesystem' messages I could use a force but god knows what this will trash. Any alternatives. 3) Is there anyway to have two tool bars down the bottom like one could in KDE3 4) is it is any way possible to import kmail boxes (in one go) into thunderbird - mind you I like kmail better! 5) Kwrite ? same applies kdebase-kwrite but is it possible to install under kde4.3? Overall this has been a very very painful experience. I found the archlinux iso would in no way allow me to partition and format my disk - I created these with an external program > once they were recognised, at other times not, but at the end of the day installation was impossible. Chakra was kinder to me - recognised the existing partitions, and installed everything (alpha3), mind you no keyboard, so it died at the add user, so I used the arch install disk to boot that system, and manually added users and grub-install. Then every second program seems to whinge about the libjepg thing. Not a happy chappy, having used ARCH since version 0.4 and it has always been such a pleasure to use and maintain. Would it be possible to use this conflicts=("kdebase-*") if i want to use a variation of the kdebase package which includes all. Can I put IPv6 rules into the regular etc/iptables/iptables.rules file containing only IPv4 rules otherwise? I noticed that both /usr/sbin/iptables and /usr/sbin/ip6tables depend on the same .so libs, so me thinks these libs need to have IPv6 support and all is well. Also, to make IPv6 work I put a rule to pass IPv6 protocol traffic outbound on eth+. Inbound packets are propably handled by the customary "-A INPUT -i eth+ -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT", as they get into the machine somehow. I didn't check packet counters, though. clemens

Hey, I'm trying to build "luabind" against an alternate "lua" package for c++. Its name is "lua-c++" and it provides "lua". It is installed correctly, yet "luabind" won't build with makepkg because of a missing dependency for "lua" which should have been provided by "lua-c++". What happened here? -- Sven-Hendrik

Yes, i realize that PulseAudio has improved massively in the past year or so, but it still breaks quite a few apps and in my experience, skips/stutters more than you want unless you're using a realtime kernel. I really hope PulseAudio will be a optdepend or a actual part of the gnome or gnome-extra groups so that if someone decides they don't want it, they don't have to use it.

Gstreamer didn't work in Amarok, but even with Xine backends installed I get no sound out of Amarok at all with the latest Amarok release. It's not a backend or plugin issue because I get sound from Dragon Player. I'm able to play oggs/mp3s in everything EXCEPT Amarok. Go figure... I can't. Sherry

Hey, I've found that I hardly get any sound at all in KDE without the phonon-xine package installed since KDE 4.3. I wondered if this is a general thing or if it occurred to me just because my installation is rather old. If it is generally needed, why not make it a dependency? Or should I not require it at all and it is a misconfiguration on my side? Insight appreciated :) -- Sven-Hendrik

i use rxvt-unicode as x terminal emulator. In tabbed mode i cannot use ctrl +left or right arrow keys to browse through words in history. i.e commands which take a long argument previously i was using fedora 10. i had asked this question in rxvt-unicode mailing list http://lists.schmorp.de/pipermail/rxvt-unicode/2009q2/001019.html and the solution described there worked in fedora 10. I also tested this on ubuntu 9.10 and it worked. In both cases the rxvt-unicode package was the same -9.06 but the above hack does not work in archlinux. Instead i find that i have to use alt key instead of ctrl key to achieve the purpose. It becomes annoying as the ctrl+arrow keys are used for the same purpose on console and any other terminal emulator as i use terminator often and i have to adjust based on circumstances. i took a look at PKGBUILD of rxvt-unicode and there is nothing that could point to this anomaly. so my question is this behaviour a bug or feature in archlinux ?

I was told that there was some talk some time ago about problems with system-tools-backends on one of the lists, but I wasn't able to find it. I'm looking to try and get those working fully/properly (cause the perl backend's pretty easy to understand...don't ask). I was wondering if people who use gnome-system-tools (or anything else that uses system-tools-backends / liboobs) could let me know what problems they've been facing with it. Note that there's been a recent update to it, so the whole "Nothing shows up" problem should no longer be there. Thanks, MAQ.

Hi all. After a recent system update (5 days ago) I find that I'm getting automatically logged out of X anywhere between 5-10 minutes into a session after a boot. I can relogin and then remain logged in. Any ideas whats up? I don't have any special X configuration - none that I'm aware of.. No xorg.conf, etc. System is a Lenovo X61 with Intel graphics. Hi, I have used electricsheep with kscreensaver for some time now but recently (after upgrade to 4.3) I changed to a different one for a change and wanted to go back to electricsheep today. But I see that it is missing in systemsettings. I checked and the file /usr/share/kde4/services/ScreenSavers/electricsheep.desktop is in place as installed from the electricsheep package. Has something changed in kscreensaver in 4.3 and thus perhaps the .desktop file is outdated? Or am I missing something else? Edgar

Listmates, I got a strange error when selecting help inside konqueror settings. the error was: "The file or folder help:/ does not exist." [arch-general] Xorg broken after last update

Hello. The last update broke my Xorg, the screen just goesn black and hangs there, CTRL+ALT+F1 (etc) doesn't do anything. I'm using X86_64, *without* [testing]. The updated packages were kernel26 nvidia xorg-server (and some others, less important) If I change the driver in xorg.conf from nvidia to vesa X works again. Anyone experienced the same thing? Ever since I upgraded to Firefox 3.5, every time I pause my music in mpd I can't start it again so long as firefox is still running. I have to kill firefox (literally kill; I tell it to quit, but the process never dies, so I have to kill it by hand) to be able to play music again. Sometimes I'd have this happen if I had a flash video with sound open or something in earlier versions, but now it happens even if I don't have any pages with flash open. After the update of kdelibs3 from 3.5.10-5 to 3.5.10-6 rosegarden doesn't start anymore and outputs the message "rosegarden: error while loading shared libraries: libkdecore.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory". Recompiling Rosegarden didn't do the trick, downgrading kdelibs3 does. The file '/opt/kde/lib/libkdecore.so.4' is present in both versions of kdelibs3. So is this a problem in kdelibs3-3.5.10-6 or does rosegarden in some way has to be fixed? This is on x86_64.

Hello, With the latest Firefox (3.5) with closed Nvidia drivers providing libGL, Firefox (or something) segfaults whenever you try to fullscreen a flash video (try youtube). Searching around, I've found a fix: simply export this in your environment: export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libGL.so.1 You can just put this in your zsh/bash/whatever profile/config, or make a wrapper script for firefox or something. Hi, I have Calc 3.1.1 installed on two separate machines, one Arch and other openSUSE10.3 (both from their respective repos, not from openoffice.org) Both have a maximum row count of 1048576? I wasn't aware that the 65536 limit was increased; I cannot find anything at openoffice.org about this feature? Problem is that some (small) sheets now save to 100Meg files? Hi, This is my first posting on Arch-general. I am one of the recent converts to the Arch religion from the Debian religion. I am writing this in defense of the pacman.static package from archlinuxfr site. I have been running for Arch on a server, a laptop and an eeepc box for a while. The server and laptop were updated almost regularly may be once every 3 days where as the eeepc was not upgraded for about 2 months. So I hit pacman -Syu on eeepc and it first asked to install the new pacman version. I went ahead and then with the new pacman I had a problem. It would just not run as a shared library was missing. I was stuck. One way was to reinstall the thing again, I hate this. The other solution which I now describe might be known but still it might be interesting if you get stuck in a similar situation. Imagin that you are install Arch linux sitting in another distro. You would have started with installing the pacman.static package first and then syncing the packages into the directory which will be your new arch root. Something like $ mount /dev/sda2 /media/target $ # copy the mirror list and pacman.conf in the appropriate place $ pacman.static --root /media/target -Sy base Now that you are already in Arch all you have to do is the last line. In my case I just had to install the xz-utils package absense of which was creating the problem. $ pacman.static -S xz-utils The pacman upgrade some how did not install this package. I guess this is a bug. After that the pacman started working fine and I did the following $ pacman -Syu Note. This might be a problem with my pacman.conf. I probably had to install things in the right order. Regards ppk

i have two soundcards. one is creative soundblaster live and the other is onboard nvidia soundcard. the kernel modules are snd-emu10k1x and snd-hda-intel respectively. Before the recent updates i used to put snd-emu10k1x before snd-hda-intel in /etc/rc.conf in the MODULES array to force the soundblaster card to be soundcard 0. But after the most recent updates this setting does not work. After going through archwiki and googling i found that either i can put "options snd_emu10k1x index=0" in /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf or i can create a custom asoundrc file in my home directory which will serve my purpose. so my question is that is the new udev does not load modules according to /etc/rc.conf ?

Hello, I have been using autofs with my local and remote filesystems for some time. With an update to version 5.0 numerous bugs were introduced forcing many users, including me, to downgrade. On May 2nd, Andrea Scrapino who was the autofs maintainer at the time, orphaned the package and asked on arch-dev-public if some other dev would be interested in maintaining the package. Three months later autofs is still orphaned and autofs bugs assigned to BaSH haunt the bugtracker [1]. Will autofs be deprecated? If so, what compatible alternatives are there? [arch-general] KDE 4.3: packaged and split problem

On kde 4.3 packaging and splitting: I am trying to file a bug report, but the e-mail is taking forever for my registration (does that sound right?) so if anyone else has this problem, please post a bug report, i'm going to sleep. I would like to share my install experience so far: I have not been able to upgrade. It complains about "kde-meta-kdeplasma-addons requires kdeplasma-addons-applets-bball" which doesn't exist. Second, doing a fresh install by doing a `sudo pacman -Rd kde kde-meta && sudo pacman -Syy && sudo pacman -S kde` downloads a bunch of the packages, and also does not download a bunch of packages (mostly from kdeedu, kdemultimedia, and i think another that I forget. I tried a few different mirrors (especially those that updated recently) with no luck. When searching for said packages, pacman looks through mirrorlist. No avail.

Hi, I've seen that there's a dynamic update ddos attack that is widely available on the net and after looking for the solution it seems that bind's latest patch (9.6.1-P1) solves this problem. So my question is more like this, is extra/bind 9.6.1-1 in the repository the same as bind 9.6.1-P1? The build date of the current package in extra/ says the 18 July but the homepage of BIND says the latest patch was published the 28 July. Best regards Fredrik Eriksson

Hi, We're close to releasing new official Arch installation media. The release date is planned latest on 09. August 2009, but we like to have pacman 3.3 on the snapshots if possible. These media will bring *a lot* of new things, so we would like some broader testing. The most important changes since 2009.02: - usage of new AIF installer - better disk editor with support for dm_crypt and lvm setups - support for automated installations (deprecates quickinst) - aufs instead of unionfs - smarter, faster, better boot device detection (esp. for usb users) - better date/time setting - refactored grub installation routines - and more... To test this, you can try many things: - the interactive and automatic procedures. - net & cd-based installations - usb vs cd-rom images, isolinux vs grub. Hello, I want to know if it is necessary for pacbuild (strawberry daemon) to be accessible direct by IP/DNS of the apple daemon? As I read here http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pacbuild_Explained I thing it should be direct acessible but I am not sure. "Apple is the main server. PKGBUILDs are submitted here, and apple does the dirty work of contacting build machines and telling them to do work." The problem is that the possible build machine (x86_64) I want to offer the project is in a DMZ which is not direct accessible. Only outgoing traffic is allowed. Maybe I can make it direct accessible but first I want to know if it is really necessary. -- Best regards Dominik Schips

Hey everybody, looking through my /usr/share/doc today I noticed that there were surprisingly few packages that actually installed their documentation there. Not even the SDL package installed its docs in there. I don't mind this too much as I carry all kinds of library documentation in my home directory with me at all times to have it accessible when I have no Internet connection available. This left me wondering, though, what Arch's general policy is on inclusion/exclusion of library/tool/package documentation for /usr/share/doc and if this policy should be generally applied to AUR packages as well. -- Sven-Hendrik
