[arch-general] VLC and Wine have been out-of-date too long.

Hello, usually Arch Linux have had very quick updates to packages when the upstream bumbed a version. However, I am slightly annoyed by the fact that VLC [1] and Wine [2] have been out-of-date for a long time. VLC 1.1.0 was released about a week ago and Wine 1.2-rc1 was released on 2010-05-21. Now there is Wine 1.2-rc5. I should also note that regardless of the Wine being a release candidate it is as stable release as 1.1.x-versions including the currently packaged 1.1.44. The officially "stable" version is 1.0.1, but 1.1.x and 1.2rc are considered very stable, yet they are officially both "development version". I agree with the one who packaged 1.1.x in Arch, it is stable enough for Arch and 1.0.1 is just too out date. Please update vlc to 1.1.0 and Wine to 1.2-rc5. Hello, i was wondering if anyone has tips on how i could combine these two: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Archiso http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kernel_Customization_with_kernel26_Pack… to create a custom kernel for an archiso image ? (replacing/removing the arch stock kernel) i have successfully created various images with archiso, even with custom packages. but this kernel stuff just gets over my knowledge, and i fail on booting with my custom one (if its even build correctly...) cheers .andre

Hopefully, my online accounts, including Facebook, will not be compromised by my antagonists. I hope that the content (text, video, and audio) in my data sharing sites will remain fully intact without unauthorized alteration, modification, and deletion by my adversaries. And hopefully nobody will close my facebook account without my authorization and consent ether. I am exceedingly concerned that I might have heart/coronary artery disease and that it might be in the late stages. My physical symptoms are: 1) Aching in the upper left of my chest since beginning January 2009 90% of the time, sometimes it may migrate to the right side 2) Shortness of breath from time to time 3) Palpitations in the last few days (I can feel my heart beat very hard and irregularly) 4) Muscle aches in the hands and legs, sometimes my hands(palms) will cramp 5) Involuntary movement of fingers/thumbs occasionally 6) Facial spasms occasionally 7) Sometimes I will feel my body "vibrating" anywhere from head to toe 8) When I tried to feel the pulses on my wrists, the pulses will "disappear" after a while. This is contrary to what doctors, nurses, and others have been telling me. That my pulses are consistent. 9) Sometimes when I am just about to fall asleep, I will get a sudden jerk or have a feeling that I am falling or my heart is going to pop out 10) giddiness/dizziness/light-headedness from time to time 11) Sometimes I will feel weak after just waking up, especially in the hands 12) discomfort at the back of my head from time to time I have visited many doctors at A&E departments of many general hospitals here but they all try to brush me off and tell me I am fine. My request for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for the brain and (more specifically the) heart is usually declined. It seems that the doctors are stalling for time, dragging and delaying until maybe it is too late to do anything for me. I have been unemployed since October 2009 and have depleted all my personal savings. In May 2009, which is just last year only, I have done a MIBI heart perfusion study (radioisotope IV + gamma camera) and the cardiologist/heart specialist told me I have NO heart/coronary artery disease (even though I have high cholesterol and it could be managed). LVEF was 64% and MIBI was negative for ischemic at Stage 2 Bruce (as at 21st May 2009). How could it then have progressed, from NO heart/artery disease to the above-mentioned physical symptoms, in such a very short period of time?! This is all very very very strange. Could it be some other problem instead? Heart/coronary artery disease takes many many years to develop. As you can observe, I am nowhere as obese as Moses Lim, a Singaporean Mediacorp TV actor. Why do I have weird/strange physical symptoms like giddiness/dizziness, chest aches, muscle aches in the limbs, shortness of breath, hyperventilations, and palpitations all of a sudden at 32 years old? Foul play? !?!?! Could it be that my neighbours have been frightening/terrifying/threatening me everyday 24x7 non-stop for the past 3-4 years with all sorts of terrible/horrible things that can happen to me? Maybe my heart couldn't take the stress under such an intensive, constant and prolonged psychological abuse? I have also heard them talk about me to various people while I am at home. I think they do that purposely. But I have had totally no say at all from start to finish because I am not allowed any chance for direct involvement. I am being excluded and not given any chance to know anything. They also seem to have gathered/amassed a lot of private information about me. I seriously wonder how they do that. They appear to be extremely resourceful and motivated. There appears to be some intrigue and cloud of secrecy around me. These people know all of my online monikers and email addresses. They have been submitting online forms using my identity and have even attempted to submit password reset instructions for me without my knowledge and consent. I actually overheard my neighbours claiming to have passwords/complete access to all my email accounts and other online accounts. They may also create phony email accounts and send messages impersonating as me without my knowledge. Thank you very much for your kind attention. PS. (1)My neighbours have claimed that they will never stop or waver in their psychological warfare on me unless I commit suicide. Or they will wait patiently until I have a heart attack or stroke. How callous they are! I want to live and live to a ripe old age. And I wish for a long and healthy life too. (2)I have a severe panic attack on 27 May 2010 Thursday and several panic attacks after that. Due to the panic attacks and the severe anxiety caused by my neighbours, I have been warded in Changi General Hospital (Ward 14) for 2 weeks (from 1st June 2010 to 15th June 2010). I am actually on home leave today to write this letter. I will be going back to the ward at night, hopefully before 8 P.M. (3)Most of the nurses in Ward 14 CGH have been very nice and friendly to me. Hopefully they are not putting on a false front. But the doctors there are as obstinate as mules. They stubbornly and stoutly refuse to give me any advanced heart imaging tests, e.g. MRI (preferred), CT-scan (not preferred), echo cardiogram, and ankle brachial indel (ABI) tests. (4)I have a medical appointment at the National Heart Center Singapore on 17 June 2010, which is next Thursday. I hope that the heart specialist there will allow me to do the advanced imaging tests (brain/heart) that I want and tell me the absolute truth about my medical condition. When I try to use google groups on firefox, it keeps redirecting in a loop. groups.google.com homepage loads, then when I click on any group, it goes to google's ssl for login validation, then back to groups then again to ssl... keeps going on. I'm having problems getting my wireless connection to work properly. It's a broadcom card, using the b43 driver. It connects fine on login, but once I actually use the network I'm disconnected and all attempts to re-connect fail. I've found some reports of similar behaviour online, but none seem to offer any good solutions to it :-( So I'm trying my luck in here instead. One person mentioned that things started working much better if he limited the network to 802.11b (not g), but I haven't seen any obvious way of achieving this. Dear Arch community, I thought I'd post a follow up on some of the things said in the last thread I created on this list. I'm using upper case for headings just to make things easier to read and not to shout! Please post or cc all follow ups to the Arch General list, and read this message carefully before replying. 1. DISCUSSION ABOUT SECURITY ON ARCH-GENERAL AND THE GOOGLE GROUP It's been mentioned that because my proposition for an arch-security list was rejected, I'm trying to circumvent that by posting stuff about setting up a security team to arch-general. That's not my intention. I am proposing a compromise. Internal communications on security issues will be kept to the Google Group. An irregular 'newsletter' will be posted to arch-general when major things are done to keep Arch users who are not on the Google Group informed. Also when security alerts do eventually start getting issued they *will* be posted to arch-general. I believe that all Arch users should benefit from the work that will be getting done. Doing it this way will keep email traffic on security issues on arch-general to a minimum. 2. THE RELEVANCE AND USEFULNESS OF AN ARCH SECURITY TEAM. There's been some murmurings that this undertaking is pointless. Happily this has mostly come from users and not developers. In fact it has the direct or indirect support of at least two Arch developers, Pierre Schmitz and Hugo Doria: http://www.osnews.com/story/22692/Arch_Linux_Team/page6/ This is just as much an experiment as anything else. It remains to be seen if setting up an Arch Security team is worthwhile. Evidence based on other distros seems to point to the fact that it is. If you are not convinced that's fine, but please provide constructive criticism and not mindless trolling like suggesting naming a security team after a Mexican food dish or the British English slang word for buttocks. If you don't want any part of this, other than the odd email on arch-general you won't be hindered or pestered in any way. 3. WE NEED YOUR HELP There is no Arch security team as of now. Hopefully there soon will be. If you want to help it would be helpful if you have the following skills or experience: -Ability to modify PKGBUILDs, rebuild and test packages. -Know how to patch and compile software -Are willing to subscribe to several security related mailing lists -Know basic usage of GPG in email -Are willing to hang out in the arch-security IRC channel -Are willing to file bugs in the Arch bug tracker You don't need to be security guru, just willing to help out, learn and with a desire to make our favourite Linux distro even better than it already is. If you want to help out please subscribe to the Google Group and submit a message with the subject "I want to join the team", without quotes. http://groups.google.com/group/arch-security If you don't have or don't want to create a Google account, please send me a personal email and I'll add you to the member list. 4. SCOPE OF THE SECURITY TEAM It is my intention that at this point, the security team will only deal with finding and fixing security related issues. This will entail providing interim pkgbuilds, reporting issues on the bug tracker and sending out alert notices via email. All communications to the 'outside world' (emails, wiki articles etc) from the team will state that (for now) the team's work is completely unofficial and unsupported by the Arch Developers. This is to avoid sullying the reputation of the Arch developers. 5. LONG TERM GOALS Most Arch stuff starts out as external projects than then merge with the main distro. If our work turns out to be useful, and I hope it will be, I would like us to become an official Arch Team. We could then having something like Debian does, with two mailing lists, one for security discussion and a read only list where announcements are posted. The details of this remain to be determined as this initiative is only just starting out. 6. FINAL WORDS I hope this message has made things a bit clearer for everyone. I won't start on the actual process/policy documents till after this weekend coming as I have some things to attend to before that. Of course feel free to suggest things on the Google Group, I'd like to make things as open and transparent over there as possible. Devs, As mentioned earlier, after my HD tanked, I did my first Gnome only install using the Arch 2010-05 install media. Except for my FU forgetting mkswap, the install is picture perfect. Further, since the radeon/dri/mesa modules are mature enough that they handle gpu downclocking during idle clock ticks, there is no further reason to hang onto the fglrx driver and limp suse 11.0 along on my laptops. Gnome 2.30 is near perfect, the packaging is, from what I can tell so far, perfect, and a simple 'rsync -au otherbox:/var/cache/pacman/pkg /var/cache/pacman' seals the deal. Great Job Devs. That brings my total Arch installs to 7, including my 2 primary servers. Arch has nailed what a distro should be and that's something worth jealously guarding against the pressures of change ;-) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. [arch-general] New Arch Install - Swap Won't Activate - Help the clueless?

Guys, I'm laughing at myself for being unable to get swap activated. Initially, when I breezed through the install, I forgot to set /dev/sdb6 to type 82 so the box came up with swap off (2G of ram so not much of an issue) But now, I want to activate it and I get an error activating swap that frankly, I have never seen before: [11:27 dcrgx2:~] # swapon -a swapon: /dev/sdb6: read swap header failed: Invalid argument Huh? [arch-general] xterm letters show up with strange bars

In fact this happeded weeks before, maybe after upgrading to xorg1.8, when typing in xterm, it left with each letter with an annoying vertical line. [see the image attached] I believe this has something to do with compiz-wm, if I switch to the other window and switch back, those lines gone, but still appear when new letters typed in. And if I switch to the default Metacity wm, nothing annoying any more. Any people encounter such problem? Hi, Does anyone know what's going on with boost? It seems it was downgraded from 1.42.0 to 1.41.0 a while back, and hasn't been updated to the latest 1.43.0. I was going to build the latest on my machine, but if there's something wrong with it I might hold off or go with the older version. I know there was some talk about splitting it up; is that the reason? Daniel

[arch-general] Where have my 135 MB of memory gone?

Hi everyone, This isn't exactly a serious issue, but it's something that's been bugging me for some time now. Today, after spending a few hours searching the Internet for information and trying some boot options (i.e.: setting iommu to stuff like noagp and noaperture,) I've decided to ask on this mailing list, hoping that someone more knowledgeable might be able to help me figure this out. I have 4 GB of memory installed on my Arch x86_64 desktop computer. The integrated graphics chipset is using 128 MB of those 4096 MB, along with another 128 MB from the sideport memory that exists on the motherboard. That should leave me with 3968 MB of usable memory. However, /proc/meminfo [1] (and `free -m') reports 3833 MB, which is 135 MB less than the expected amount. In `dmesg' output, I also see the following line: Memory: 3857352k/4849664k available (3481k kernel code, 787336k absent, 204976k reserved, 1790k data, 480k init) which says that ~200 MB are reserved. This doesn't match the 135 MB I calculated above, but could possibly include it. So, what's going on here? Where and how is my missing memory being used? [arch-general] Slim login manager is logging everything

I'm using Slim as my login manager and it's logging absolutely everything. Things like gstreamer and alsa errors. This is making the log file huge, of the order of 8 gb when compressed. Can anyone think of a solution? I could always use the hack of putting the logfile in /tmp but I don't want to do that. /var is not on a separate partition and I'm not prepared to re-partition my system. Obviously with such large logfiles I'm getting performance issues. I'm an XFCE user so I'd like to avoid kdm and gdm. Are are there any other alternative X11 login apps other than xdm that don't depend on GNOME or KDE if I can't fix my issue with Slim? thanks, Ananda
