[arch-general] Keyboad in KDE locks up

Hello, Every once in a while -- not too frequently to be unusable, but certainly enough to be annoying -- the keyboard in KDE will simply lock up. Mouse will still work fine, and keyboard inputs that don't go through KDE -- switching to virtual terminals, resetting X via <ctrl>-<alt>-backspace still work (and, indeed, resetting X and logging back in is the only thing that fixes it). I can't see any real pattern as to when this happens -- programs that I basically always have running, though, are Pidgin, Firefox and keytouchd, as well as, obviously, plasma, etc. I am running the vanilla KDE 4.2 packages. [arch-general] DST and suspend

Hi folks, I wonder if anybody else is experiencing such a problem. Here in USA the Daylight Saving time started from the last Sunday, and my box has switched the clock properly. But then I found that every time when I suspend my ThinkPad R61 and bring it back to life the clock is switched back to old winter time! I run ntpdate to fix it, and everything is fine until the laptop is suspended again. Today I've updated tzdata and kernel - the same behaviour still persists... Am I missing something? Thanks for ideas. Sergey

Hi, i use a script to prepare a bridged network for a kvm session and therefore i have this line in /etc/udev/rules.d/01-attila.rules: KERNEL=="tun", NAME="net/%k", MODE="0660", GROUP="network" After upgrading udev my file permissions of the new persistent /dev/net/tun looks so after booting up: crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 10, 200 8. Mär 00:43 /dev/net/tun I play with this lines in /etc/udev/permissions.d/00-my.permissions: a) tun:root:network:0660 b) net/tun:root:network:0660 I reboot even after changing the line but there is no change. If i do a "modprobe tun" there be the right permissions: crw-rw---- 1 root network 10, 200 8. Mär 00:43 /dev/net/tun So my questions is how and/or where can i control the file permissions of the persistent devices from the new udev? This is definitly not bad, i want more to know what i have overseen.-) See you, Attila

Hello. I'm trying to use OpenOffice.org on my Acer Aspire One. For some peculiar reason, all the characters in the menu and title bar etc. and everything I type to the document are displayed as "squares" instead of regular characters. Sourcing /etc/profile.d/openoffice.sh does nothing. Installing a JRE didn't do anything either. Other applications such as Firefox work fine. Any ideas?

Hello, I am trying to setup udev to automatically open a LUKS partition of my external USB drive once it is plugged in. I have written the following udev rules script: ACTION="add", ENV{DEVTYPE}="partition", ENV{ID_SERIAL}="<serial number of the drive>", RUN+="/usr/sbin/cryptsetup --key-file /etc/keyfile luksOpen /dev/%k usbhd" ACTION="remove", ENV{DEVTYPE}="partition", ENV{ID_SERIAL}="<serial number of the drive>", RUN+="/usr/sbin/cryptsetup luksClose usbhd" Udev seems to recognize my drive but instead of creating /dev/mapper/usbhd I get some nonsense like /dev/mapper/temporary-cryptsetup-7501 or similar. I don't know what this is but it seems not to work when I try to mount it. Any ideas? -- Henri Häkkinen

[arch-general] Scim and arphic fonts update in [testing]

Hi all, I've just updated several scim-related packages. They are in the [testing] repo. The updated packages are: anthy libchewing libhangul scim scim-anthy scim-chewing scim-tables uim scim-uim (no update, just rebuild against uim 1.5.5) As I don't use these packages (I believe no dev use them either), I could only do minimal testing. It would be nice if users of these packages test them and report if they work properly or if there are problems with them. I've also updated (in [testing] repo) the Arphic fonts: ttf-arphic-ukai and ttf-arphic-uming There are two points about these fonts: 1. According to upstream: "This release contains Firefly's Bitmap fonts. The Bitmap fonts are available for 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 pixel and currently cover Big5 and GB2312. HKSCS is currently not supported as there are many more characters missing. So, for Big5 and GB2312 characters the bitmap glyphs should improve the rendering, but for all other characters, the rendering is the same like without bitmap glyphs." I might be nice to get comments about someone using these fonts to see if the ttf-fireflysung package is indeed no longer needed (http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/8951) 2. The updated ttf-arphic-* packages in testing provide the fonts as a TrueType Collection, i.e. the fonts come in 4 flavors (CN, HK, TW and TW MBE), with different glyph shapes according to the preferred shapes in each region (more info here: http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/CJKUnifonts/Download) As a result TeX users will encounter trouble using this font. The following programs/libraries are known to not fully support TTC files and can usually only use the first fontface of the TTC: - jdk and openjdk6 - imlib2 and applications which use imlib2. Again, I and probably none of the devs don't use these fonts so feedback from users would be nice. Eric

Hello, When I boot my computer the connection to the wifi network takes a while, until then I can't connect to localhost. So I can't use mpd for example, I musst either turn off my wifi card or wait until I'm connected. This is quite annoying, is there a way to solve that problem or at least get a better diagnosis for solving it on my own? Thomas

The upcoming version of xorg-server will have a lot of workarounds and patches removed. Doing so, the package becomes easier to understand, as even its maintainer has no idea what is happening anymore. When upgrading to xorg-server-1.6, you will see these file conflicts on most systems: error: failed to prepare transaction (conflicting files) xorg-server: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libdri.so exists in filesystem xorg-server: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libwfb.so exists in filesystem It's safe and advised to overwrite these files. The symlinks were previously created from post_install by the xorg-server and nvidia-utils packages. It is advised to install xorg-server first by using "pacman -Sf xorg-server", after which you can upgrade the rest of your system. This release of xorg-server requires a rebuild of all video and input drivers. Older drivers will fail to load with an ABI mismatch. Drivers in our repositories will receive an update to match the xorg-server ABI. Nvidia has updated their latest drivers with support for this version of xorg-server. AMD does not support xorg-server-1.6 yet in their Catalyst drivers. AMD users are advised to switch to the xf86-video-ati or xf86-video-radeonhd drivers instead, or keep any X.Org related updates on hold via IgnorePkg in pacman.conf. This can be done by putting xorg-server in IgnorePkg in pacman.conf. All other updates should have conflicts set, so it will be clear which additional packages should be added to the IgnorePkg list on your system. Note that there will be no support for older versions of xorg-server when this version moves to extra.

[arch-general] weird thing with X and nvidia driver

Hi, I run Arch linux with KDE 4.2 on a machine with a Geforce 6200 LE card. But recently I have been experiencing some weird things. At the begining I was running KDE 4.2.0 with a nvidia-180.22 driver and the X process consumes lots of memory graduately, even to 200+ MB some times. Then I updated to KDE4.2.1 and the problem disappeared. But today, after I update the video driver to nvidia-180.29 it is here again. I have no idea which component cause it. KDE, nvidia dirver or xorg? Another weird thing is with the nvidia driver. Before updating to 188.29, glxgear had about 1060 FPS. After update and I restarted the KDE. Then glxgear told me the nvidia api dismatch, that is, the kernel module is still 180.22 but other parts of the driver is 180.29, and it has 1300+ FPS, then I remove the old module and modprobe the new one so it runs 180.29 now, but it is 1060FPS again. There's no improvement over 180.22! What's the problem?

I need a small smtp daemon for use as an MTA to move mail from a desktop to a mail server I could use sendmail or something like it but I am looking for something smaller. Any suggestions?
