[arch-general] LVM volume not active / fails to mount at boot

For some reason, since the last LVM upgrade, one of my LVM volumes fails to mount, causing the boot sequence to fail. I can sometimes fix this issue by removing the volume from /etc/fstab, rebooting, and then manually issuing "vgchange -ay vg2". But even this doesn't seem to work reliably. It usually tells me it activates 1 volume, but sometimes /dev/vg2/lvshare still doesn't show up. Any idea what the problem might be here / how to fix? Thanks, DR

Hello. Is there a way to redefine keys that change a layout (there is only one suitable KEYMAP that uses Ctrl+Shift, but I'd like to use Alt+Shift)? Is it possible to enable a compose key (without X)? I've found a Debian-only solution: http://unix.stackexchange.com/a/44478

I have a question about the netpbm package. There was an api change after the 10.6xx versions were released and there have been bug fixes also. Based on the history file for the advanced repo shows, which the 10.57 package was based on 13.02.20 BJH Release 10.61.02 MinGW build: various fixes. 12.12.31 BJH Release 10.61.01 pamstereogram: change -guidesize default from 10 to 20 (relevant since 10.61.00). pamstereogram: fix bug: doesn't reject negative guidesize. Broken since 10.61.00. pamstereogram: fix bug: garbage in -verbose listing. Broken since 10.61 MinGW build: various fixes. 12.12.30 BJH Release 10.61.00 I hate to flag this as out date since so few packages from the repos depend on it, so I did some testing. I obtained the patchset from 10.60.05 contained in the fedora fc19 source rpm file and built the svn trunk repo with the equivalent patches being used for the Arch 10.57 package and the build went fine. I then tested the build of groff, gocr, latex2html, dvd-slideshow, and vor against the netpbm-svn build I installed and those builds went fine. I then tested the build of the trunk version with all but one, netpbm-gcc4.patch, the patches contained in the fedora patchset and the build went fine. One of the patches provides for not building the docs which produces a package of 1.2M on my x86_64 machine. I'm using the svn version so I can build Prima from CPAN which wouldn't build against 10.57, and don't seem to have any problems running the svn version and will continue to do so. I also search the arch-dev public mailing list for anything on netpbm updates and netpbm being a dep for groff but nothing about the need for updating the package. Since there is currently no maintainer for the netpbm package and based on this data what would be the appropriate course of action in getting the Arch repo packages updated to a later version of netpbm, or is it necessary? I am stuck on the configuration of the scanner functionality for a Samsung SCX-4500W multifunction printer/scanner. I can get the printing function of this printer to work by the following steps: 1) Add a line to /etc/udev/rules.d/70-usbprinter.rules containing: ATTR{idVendor}=="04e8", ATTR{idProduct}=="342b", MODE:="0660", GROUP:="lp" 2) Making sure that I have the splix driver package installed I can define a usb connected printer with the splix driver which works very well indeed. I have cups and avahi installed and enable cups.socket and avahi-daemon. When I try to get the scanner working I can get a sensible output from: # sane-find-scanner # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer. # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter. # Also you need support for SCSI Generic (sg) in your operating system. # If using Linux, try "modprobe sg". found USB scanner (vendor=0x04e8 [Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.], product=0x342b [SCX-4500W Series]) at libusb:003:006 # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage. # Not checking for parallel port scanners. # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports # can't be detected by this program. So the scanner seems to be detected - but when I do: # scanimage -L No scanners were identified. Please read the documentation which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages). If I try to create a scan via GIMP it hangs the GIMP and I have to kill it. I tried to add a line to 75-sane.rules in /etc/udev/rules.d/ with: ATTRS{idVendor}=="04e8", ATTRS{idProduct}=="342b", MODE="0660", GROUP="scanner", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes" But this did not work. [arch-general] Strange Problem with Greek characters

Hi everyone, Recently i afford a strange problem in writing/reading greek characters in my ArchBox. The problem started when i tried to change the default locales and add greek UTF-8 locales alongside to en_US.UTF-8. Since then I could both write and read greek in urxvt(and all terminal based programs like vim etc), kile and libreoffice. When i made the changes and run "locale-gen", I cannot read & write ,in any way, greek characters in urxvt(and any other terminal like xterm), and though i write greek in kile and libreoffice, I cannot write with tons. I've read wiki and talked to Archers from greek-community but no result. New unified Mesa has hit testing. Upgrade path went smooth here. Please test it. Now the main mesa pkg should provide everything required to build and link packages. The mesa-libgl pkg providing libgl should be not be used in the dependency array when linking to libgl.so - please use "libgl" that will allow users to choose also nvidia-utils or catalyst-utils. There are still packages in extra depending on the old libgl package. We will need to fix them before makepkg will properly allow to build only against new mesa. -Andy

Hello. I set `KEYMAP' and `FONT' in `/etc/vconsole.conf'. `sudo /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-vconsole-setup' works. But how can I use it after `reboot'? `mkinitcpio.conf' is not an option because I don't use initrd. I tried to add the above line to `/etc/rc.local', but it did not work. Thanks

[arch-general] A question about handling a system with two wired network interfaces?

I have a system with two ethernet sockets on the motherboard, and I have until very recently been finding that my network at random failed to come up during the boot process. I have the ethernet cable plugged into only one of the two sockets, and assign the names to the interfaces as eno1 and eno2 - because left to its own it assigned one of them as name "eno1" and the other to "eth0" or "eth1" at random between boots! I was surprised that it chose ethX at all for the second name, given this is running with the new naming scheme! However following the hints at: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Udev#Network_device I specify that udev fix the two interface names as eno1 and eno2 - but still the network failed to come up sometimes at boot. It seemed to be pure chance as to whether it came up on any particular boot. I tried both NetworkManager as well as ifplugd/netcfg and both seemed to behave the same way - at any one time I only had one or other scheme for getting the network up. What I then presumed was that although the same two names are always assigned, the hardware mac address to which of the two physical network ports was being assigned was being assigned differently to the two names - i.e. sometimes being en01 and sometimes being eno2. Why this matters is that I assign a static ip address to eno1 only and don't use eno2. This would only be an issue if there was more than one NIC in the system. The system boots really fast as it has SSD drives, which possibly was not allowing enough time for the name assignment, so I then found the advice at: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Rename_network_interfaces where it suggests editing the systemd unit file for in my case NetworkManager service - which I then did and this finally seems to have fixed the problem though I will still need to boot over a period of days to check if the network comes up "every" time now. The wiki page refers to the network service file, but I applied this to the NetworkManager service file. So the question that I hope someone can answer is whether in the case of multiple NICs in a system the new network names, although the same "set" of names is used for all the cards in the system, will still need this systemd unit file amendment - i.e. adding the two lines: Requires=systemd-udev-settle.service After=systemd-udev-settle.service to the [unit] section in order to get the correct name associated with the same hardware mac address every boot? If someone who understands these things in detail could confirm if my understanding is correct I would appreciate it? Many thanks. -- mike c

We will remove the OpenJDK6 packages by the end of this month. All users should move to OpenJDK7 based packages jre7-openjdk/jre7-openjdk-headless/jdk7-openjdk (or the Oracle based JRE/JDK from AUR) very soon. The next OpenJDK7 update will replace openjdk6 on your system. -Andy

This RTC in UTC, by calling 'timedatectl set-local-rtc 0'. # timedatectl set-local-rtc 1 Failed to issue method call: Input/output error Sometimes I don't get an output when running "timedatectl set-local-rtc 1". # cat /etc/adjtime LOCAL # ls -l /etc/localtime lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 Feb 17 22:35 /etc/localtime -> /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Berlin For my old Arch Linux install there wasn't this issue. I suspect I make a mistake, I'm missing something now. I already asked at the German forums, but until now without success: https://bbs.archlinux.de/viewtopic.php?id=23477 FWIW I don't have a Windows installed, this machine is a *NIX multi-boot only. I'm aware about the drawbacks and advantages of both, the usage of UTC and local time and in 10 years I never experienced a drawback using local time. At the moment it's simply more comfortable for me, if I've got local time available for the BIOS. The reason for this should be unimportant for this thread. Regards, Ralf
