[aur-general] ttf-google-webfonts{,-distilled,-git,-hg} mess

I am the current maintainer of the AUR package ttf-google-webfonts-hg[4], and I'm bothered by the mess of various packages there are for Google's Web Fonts project. It's not at all KISS in its current state. There are currently four different AUR packages[1][2][3][4] that essentially supply the same files, and all four packages conflict with each other. Around August of 2012, the package named ttf-google-webfonts[1] was orphaned, and user w0ng created a GitHub repository[5] that mirrors the Mercurial repository[6] on Google Code (why?). Then, the new maintainer changed the original ttf-google-webfonts package from a VCS-type package that simply lacked "-hg" in the name to a package that pulls tarballs from w0ng's GitHub repo[5]. As you can see in the comments for ttf-google-webfonts[1], this has caused all sorts of confusion and messages about the package being out-of-date or having invalid checksums. To get around these issues, user epinephrine created the package ttf-google-webfonts-git[3] that clones w0ng's GitHub repo[5] instead of pulling tarballs from it, which significantly reduces the maintenance required on the package. Then, user Gently created a package named ttf-google-webfonts-distilled[2] that pulls a tarball from w0ng's GitHub repo[5] and only installs a small subset of the fonts therein. Shortly after ttf-google-webfonts[1] was changed from being a Mercurial-based package and not liking the direction that the package was taking, I reuploaded the original ttf-google-webfonts package as ttf-google-webfonts-hg[4] for people that simply wanted the old package back that uses the actual Google Web Fonts repository to download the files. To clean up this mess, I propose that ttf-google-webfonts-distilled[2] and ttf-google-webfonts-git[3] be deleted outright, for what should be obvious reasons. I also propose that ttf-google-webfonts[1] be deleted because of how frequently the Web Fonts project is updated and because the project lacks version numbers. If people really feel strongly about keeping that maintenance nightmare, then let them have it, but I really don't see what advantage it provides over the original ttf-google-webfonts-hg[4] other than one less makedepends. I apologize for the huge email, but this situation really is a mess. [aur-general] Are AUR VCS packages that depend on AUR VCS packages from other projects a good idea and who should decide on that ?

Hi, recently a mesa developer contacted me and asked me to change mesa-git to depend on released llvm/clang instead of llvm/clang trunk. He did convince me there's a demand for such a package. Currently people wanting to build mesa-git against released versions need to edit the pkgbuild and make a few changes (not documented atm). I have been building mesa trunk against llvm trunk since mesa started using llvm and tailored the package to my personal workflow and style. Adjusting the mesa-git PKGBUILD to use repo llvm/clang would force me to either change my workflow or maintain a package I don't use in that form. I'd probably stop maintaining mesa-git. I do feel there's an underlying issue here that concerns us all as stated in the title: Are AUR VCS packages that depend on AUR VCS packages from other projects a good idea and who should decide on that? Hello, I am the author of a new implementation of POSIX bc. ( https://github.com/gavinhoward/bc) It has all GNU extensions, so it can be used to build the Linux kernel. In fact, it can be a drop-in replacement for the GNU bc. While I believe that my bc is robust enough to be used as the default bc on Arch, I am under no illusion that that will happen right away, if at all. Instead, I have made a PKGBUILD (attached) for my bc as an alternative. It installs alongside the GNU bc without problem, since it is renamed as "bc-gh". This also includes a dc under "dc-gh". Would there be interest in adding my bc as an Arch package? Gavin Howard

[aur-general] Can someone make sure pkg adwaita-creamy is users not knowing what they're doing, rather than AUR bugs?

Hoping someone can look at the non-public history of the AUR package with "pkgbase=pkgbase" and "pkgname=adwaita-creamy". The repo started as an embedded programming language, and is now a GTK Adwaita theme. I am expecting the non-public history will just show a weird sequence of events combined with several users not understanding pkgbase. I could be wrong, and this could show bug(s) with the AUR, so I wanted to mention it. A few days ago, an IRC user made the same mistake and was being denied pushing to pkgbase.git since it existed. I go them squared away, and that led me to this lovely AUR repo. What I'm betting happened follows. I think on Feb 25, "Stoyan Minaev" pushed "pkgname=loli" without a pkgbase. He made more pushes, inserting and changing pkgbase a total of 6 times until deciding "pkgbase=pkgbase" was correct way. I think he then disowned the package. Then, on Mar 2, maybe "Murat Çileli" unknowingly adopted the package by pushing into it his new PKGBUILD. Maybe he checked it out, was confused, changed it to his different package and pushed it. This had too many WTF's, so wanted someone to look at the non-public history. I don't know if it's intended to be able to change an existing package's git repo name. I don't know if it's intended to be able to adopt a package by just pushing into it if it's an orphan. (Alternatively, maybe Murat adopted through the website.) I don't know if Stoyan disowned anything.

I'm also receiving comments from lots of different spam accounts in unity-editor. I'm not a TU and the web gui doesn't seem to have an option to deal with it. What's the protocol for these cases? Thanks, Oscar.
