[aur-general] AUR Best Practice for New Package Upload

Hi, I am fairly new to Arch in general--switched to it a few months ago--and a newbie at PKGBUILD and maintaining packages on AUR. So please bear with me. I am looking to write my first PKGBUILD to upload to AUR, for a small program written in Python (hashing tools). The program has 3 components: 1) the main script which is CLI (available for python2 and/or python3) 2) a GTK+ GUI (optional) for python2 3) the GTK+ GUI (optional) for python3 I use the GTK+GUI for python3 on my box but perhaps some users might want (or have to) use python2. Question 1): The program is small (approx 250kb only) and my tendency would be to just do the one package with all 3 components which users will then use as they see fit, CLI only or GUI, etc. This would allow me to maintain only one package for this program. Is only one package OK with the AUR community? I just basically downloaded the source tarball, extracted it to /opt and am running it from there. My idea is to achieve the same with PKGBUILD, following proper protocol, etc. Is "installing" (extracting dir structure) to /opt a problem? Once I finish writing script, I will check it with Namcap and post it here for review. Thanks for your comments on Questions 1) and 2) above.

[aur-general] Multiple packages removal request

Please delete all ruby1.9* packages except for "ruby1.9-bundler" and "ruby1.9". I am the maintainer of them all. I was going to use them as dependencies for metasploit-git package, but I figured out creating a package for Metasploit is impossible. Thus, I updated the wiki with manual install instructions: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php?title=Metasploit_Framework&action=edit… Now the packages I created are useless.

There seems to be some problem regarding comments on https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/baikal BunBum did a comment yesterday for which I got a mail but which isn't on the page (then they posted another one, the one with "My comment here was deleted???"). Now I just posted a comment, but it's nowhere to be seen. What's going on there? Is this some AUR bug? Hi, I've some stuff I'd like to discuss regarding AUR categores. To begin with, categories are package metadata that lives in the AUR only. The PKGBUILDs have no reference to them, nor does pacman. This is really inconsistent with all of the other package variables, so I'd just like to propose we move this from merely being AUR metadata to the PKGBUILDS themselves, adding a "category" variable to them, eg: category="games" This would also leave the door open for pacman to process these variables in future, which could also be useful. I can't be the only person who's wanted to do something like "pacman -Q --category=games" to look for installed games. (the example syntax is horrible, but it's just to make it understandable). [aur-general] Meta packages in AUR?

Hi, I've a few "meta" packages I maintain and install across all my systems, and I'm wondering if it's ok to upload these to the AUR or if they're not welcome. Keep in mind: I know these won't make it to the stable repos, and that's not the intention. An example of these "meta" packages is "meta-group-base-devel", which is an "empty" package that has all the packages in "base-devel" as dependencies. This helps me keep things like "pacman -Qen" short and readable, and also make sure that all my machines have base-devel entirely installed. Is it ok to upload/share these? The AUR guidelines don't explicitly forbid these [1], but I want to make sure there's not precedent or issues with these. Hi, python2-mpdclient2 (with basename python-mpdclient2) was an orphan that I adopted some time ago. This is the current webpage: http://incise.org/py-libmpdclient2.html The webpage says: "This library is not maintained and has been superceded by the python-mpd library. New projects should use python-mpd." python-mpd is already in [extra] and there is a whole smörgåsbord of python/python2 and mpd related packages and clients in AUR. Hi, Would it be possible to add a replaces= and/or conflicts= to the chromium Arch package for "chromium-libpdf", since it integrates that (formerly very popular) AUR package and causes a file conflict on attempted upgrade otherwise?
