[arch-general] Spell Checking in Emacs

I have emacs 23.2 running in a normal text console and am trying to spell check using the ispell.el facility in the emacs lisp libraries. I also installed aspell and espell-en packages to resolve the binary program to be used by the emacs ispell function. When I do any of the emacs commands like ispell-buffer or ispell-region and the like, I keep getting a message in the prompt line of emacs saying "Text is read-only" The buffer where I am testing this is most definitely not a read-only buffer. I tested aspell out in a normal terminal on a test text file and that seemed to work OK. Do I have to do anything else to get this working right? I did not set up any config files for aspell; I'm not sure if I have to or not. Can anyone help me out?

[arch-general] Many official packages don't also provide static libraries

Hello all! I've seen that a lot of official ArchLinux packages don't also provide the static library variants (only the shared ones). (See at the end for a statistic, but summarized almost half of them are in this case.) These static variants of the libraries might be pointless for the "vanilla" distribution as most (all?) packages are dynamically linked. But as ArchLinux doesn't provide niche or obscure tools, I have to build them myself. (And by no mean I would like ArchLinux to have all the packages Debian has. I prefer ArchLinux to remain "slim".) And when I build them myself most of the time I can't make them statically link against the current installed libraries (as I have only shared ones). (I know the pros and cons of this. I don't want to debate static linking here.) But as the time goes and ArchLinux moves forward, old shared libraries just disappear, and my hand-built tools remain broken. (And of course I don't see they are broken when I break them, but instead just when I need them and I don't have time to fiddle around fixing them. And I've stumbled onto this multiple times until now, but it gradually gets annoying.) So my question is: what is the reason to not provide also the static library variants? [arch-general] grml-zsh-config and VCS_info

I'd know if there's a way to resolve the following issue: I use grml-zsh-config, but the VCS_info prompt inside a Mercurial repository doesn't work. The strange thing is that VCS_info prompt correctly works for git and bazaar (as you can see at <http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/6088/immagineqd.jpg>). I haven't modified anything in the /etc/zsh/zshrc. Does anybody know a solution? TIA

[arch-general] why is sage-mathematics so huge?

Hi, I just noticed that there is a sage-mathematics package in community repository and tried to install it and found out that the package is really huge. I understand that sage is always shipped in a gigantic bundle, but the arch package is considerably larger than official packages provided for other Linux distributions. For lzma compressed archives, they are typically around 330MB, while the arch package is about 630MB. Why is the package so big? I have just noticed that the arch version is 4.5.3, the version on its official site is still 4.5.2. Is this the reason for the big package? Thank you for your kind attention. Yours,

[arch-general] Removing HAL

Hi list. Few days ago I've succesfully installed arch. It was booting really fast first time (i.e. without gnome, networkmanager, etc). After installing GNOME and some daemons, adding them to the rc.conf, the system now takes 30-40 seconds to load. I heard that HAL daemon takes a lot of time during boot and it's functionality can be replaced by udev. How could I completely remove HAL and still use GNOME without troubles? Is it possible? I have: - GNOME 2.30 - xorg 1.8 - hal 0.5 -- 2b || !2b
