I have two arch systems I use regularly. On my home system, most recently installed, I have a rather simple and stylish volume indicator. On my other system I have an uglier, rather gaudy indicator (screenshot attached). I've completely forgotten what I did, so I don't know how to get the simple one back again. Hello all, A short while ago, I posted this topic: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=104651 Through here, I'm hoping to reach some more willing archers to assist in the updating of some keystone wiki articles. The bullet points: the changes that accompanied xorg 1.8.x have not been reflected in several important articles on the wiki: 1. The Beginner's Guide, specifically this section: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners'_Guide#Step_2:_Install_X 2. The evdev article, specifically all mentioning of HAL policies (which are ignored as of 1.8.x: http://www.archlinux.org/news/502/) and the possible merge with the xorg article 3. in a less important way: Nvidia, ATI and the Synaptics article (which I am rewriting currently) The discussion page for the BG is filled with good intent since december 2009, as is the topic on the forums... But fact remains that the documentation is falling behind. I'm hoping to motivate one or several to help out in having a good look around our wiki so that we may keep our documentation on this as bleeding edge as our OS :) Out with the old, in with the new and all that. -Stefan p.s. of course these are suggestions, if any here has a better approach please do reply

Hi, The new /etc/rc.sysinit introduced in initscripts-2010.07-1 has changed the original behavior of locale settings. Usually this means setting `export LANG=en_US.UTF-8' on most computers, and to be included by shell (.bashrc or .zshrc) everytime, if the user included it at all. I.e.: source /etc/profile But for multilingual users, due to the fact that the initial console only displays ASCII, we often write the local LANG and LC_ALL setting in xinitrc, so to make an environment that uses English under console and local (multibyte) language within Xorg. With the introduction of /etc/profile.d/locale.sh, it would make a problem that cause Xorg program still using en_US when where we wanted zh_TW or zh_CN. [arch-general] Chromium crashes KDE 4.5.1

Hi, I am using Chromium 6.0.x with KDE 4.5.1. Whenever any website presents a dialog box asking for confirmation for something (for example in gmail if i close the tab without logging out it presents a dialog box asking for confirmation) and after i click on any button on it the kde panel crashes. Also, i suspect plasma crashes too but applications that are open including chromium do not crash. This happened even in KDE 4.4.However it happens in KDE only and not in any other DE. Please tell me why this happens and how to stop it from happening. Thanks. P.S- Telling me to stop using KDE is not an appropriate answer :P

Yesterday's qtcurve update totally broke compositing on my KDE desktop. Specifically, the qtcurve-kde4 window decoration doesn't allow OpenGL to load, only XRender (which is very slow). Anyone else got this? % lspci -vv ... Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) ... :-( Pete.

[arch-general] community/e-svn 51937-1 BROKEN? themes fail screen resolution fail etc...

I just did a "pacman -Syu" And unfortunately I let it upgrade e17. according to "pacman -Ss enlightenment" I now have: community/e-svn 51937-1 (e17-svn) [installed] e17 no longer cooperates with personal themes I can select them, it remembers which theme is selected. But none of them have any effect on the appearance which is locked in on the default theme which is so dark that I can't even read the clock gadget And unlike my chosen theme there is no visible indication of which "button" will effectively be pushed if I press enter. (I'm a keyboard man mostly because I can use the keyboard for hours and hours, but 5 minutes of wrestling with the mouse is enough to cause my hands to start going numb...) So I NEED a theme that highlights the button currently in focus to use e17 effectively. It will let me change the screen resolution to one where I can read text without a microscope, But once I do I'm unable to logout cleanly. (It locks up and fails to save the configuration changes) While it's so locked up I can use <ctrl>+<alt>+<F2> to switch to another tty where I can log in and do a "ps -a" to see enlightenment is "running" But it doesn't respond to "killall enlightenment"... (Since I'm a startx user I can switch to tty1 {where I ran startx} and kill the X server with <ctrl>+C) I'm not really surprised (since it isn't listening to the theme) that my gadget and shelf settings were forgotten. It did let me put them back. (even if the clock is now useless) But at each and every change it presented me with an error that there could be only one system tray??? What that had to do with putting the sound mixer gadget back on the shelf I don't have a clue... If it matters I'm using an HP Pavilion a1410n with Amd 64 Athlon processors And an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150 LE which didn't like the open source nouveau driver at all. So I'm using a pacman supplied proprietary Nvidia driver. I'm just glad that I've also got e16 installed or I'd really be crying in my beer. I don't suppose it's possible to roll back to the previous version of e17? Is anybody else having a problem with community/e-svn 51937-1 (e17-svn)? Or is it just me? Any suggestions would be welcome... But I already tried moving my ~/.e directory and letting e17 start with a fresh user profile. [arch-general] Howto fix yum-createrepo PKGBUILD from AUR? (rpm is replaced by rpm-org - now rpm module missing?)

Guys, How do I fix the yum-createrepo PKGBUILD so that yum-createrepo looks for the module 'rpm-org' instead of looking for the outdated 'rpm' module? In the PKGBUILD, the depends currently is: depends=('python' 'python-lxml' 'rpm' 'yum') However, 'rpm-org' now provides 'rpm' so the depends line needs to be: depends=('python' 'python-lxml' 'rpm-org' 'yum') The problem is that when you build yum-createrepo with 'rpm-org' it fails with the following error: [12:19 archangel:/home/backup/rpms] # createrepo --update -d openSUSE_11.3/ Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/share/createrepo/genpkgmetadata.py", line 28, in <module> import createrepo File "/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/createrepo/__init__.py", line 22, in <module> import yumbased File "/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/createrepo/yumbased.py", line 19, in <module> import rpm ImportError: No module named rpm So it looks to me like it tries to 'import rpm' and fails because 'package rpm' isn't installed, instead the new package 'rpm-org' is installed and provides rpm: 12:28 archangel:~/arch/pkg/bld/yum-createrepo> rpm --version RPM version 4.8.0 So what do I need to fix (by patch, symlink somewhere in python, or otherwise) to cure this problem?
