[arch-general] Password expiring and encryption

Hello all, I have my passwords set to expire every 30 days. When they expire, I am asked to input a new, different password. It turns out that I recently noticed I had to input only the first 8 characters of my password to be able to log in. I discussed this with Hlao-ru on #archlinux and, thanks to him, I found out that passwords generated by passwd were fine but passwords generated after my password expire suffer of the 8-character restriction problem. This problem can be reproduced by manually expiring the password with passwd -e user and then loging in with su user. So I took a look at man passwd and man login and both programs read /etc/login.defs. This file has a parameter, ENCRYPT_METHOD, that was, in my system, unset. The default value for this parameter is DES, and that could be causing my problem. I set the parameter to SHA512 but that didn't help (I believe I have to reboot the system, and I haven't). There are a few other files that seem to do a similar job, namely /etc/default/passwd and /etc/pam.d/password. I am confused: what file control what programs? And isn't that a bug? The wiki [0] says that newly created passwords use SHA-512 as the encryption, but that's clearly not the case when asked to create a new password. Hi . What is the easiest way to stop pacman trying to update all the xf86-video* drivers for cards i do not have the system uses the xf86-video-nouveau driver perfectly well but tries to install sis ati sirrus trident and more I know about adding files at the command line --exclude and about entering a list in pacman.conf but is there a way that is quicker. [arch-general] Introduction from a blind arch user

Hi all: I've just recently begun tentatively using arch on a usb thumb drive. I am blind, so I use the arch linux for the blind image to install. I'm writing to ask what other blind arch linux users as a desktop, since that's what I've become used to using. I don't know much about gnome 3 but would be willing to try it, or any other desktop that works well with orca. Thanks Kendell clark

[arch-general] Suggestions for email for a paranoid Archer

Recently, my paranoia levels have been ratcheted up by reading about companies' treatment of their users, along with an increasing awareness of my powerlessness with respect to most content providers. I therefore curbed most online activity and have attempted to host those services I used on my own server, in most cases living without when I didn't succeed. Two months ago, I attempted to install postfix and dovecot on my Arch box in order to be able to host my own mail. Naively I thought that all I needed was the right software and a dynamic DNS address. In other words, I thought it would be as simple as setting up a web server. Naturally, I found out that most anti-spam software is leery of mail from dynamic DNS hosts who do not have rDNS and PTR records set up, that they preferred DKIM mail, etc. Seeing as these involve even more effort, I thought to ask the enlightened members of the Arch community which solution they would suggest me to use, because I trust you to have made intelligent decisions in this matter and believe you understand this outlook. Also, I've seen many users with email addresses issued by their own domain, which leads me to believe some of you may have gone through this before. The alternatives I'm aware of are: 1) Do what most people do, and just sign up for webmail, paranoia demanding me to download all email every day. Possibly alias the domain by routing everything through postfix first. 2) Host my own server, paranoia demanding multiple redundant backups. 3) No email - Knuth style Pros: 1) Very reliable, better support, and non-crazy 2) Gain vast amounts of power over my email 3) Less distraction, no effort at all Cons: 1) Less control, more black box. Is aliasing even possible? Too many providers - which to choose? 2) Hard to maintain, can crash at any moment, will drive me to early grave 3) Harder to keep in touch with people this way, harder to check what's going on Which do you suggest? This makes me a little nervous… What are the way for people which ex. use fluxbox via ck-launch-session and thunar as a filemanager (for dbus/polkit/udisks things) AND NOT systemd-logind ? You might find a level where this output is omitted. I personally just went to booting "quiet" after I finished testing systemd for my systems. mfg narve after my initial testing of systemd was finished.

I just converted a laptop with encrypted /home and /swap to systemd - initscripts has been removed. Luks via standard (new) /etc/crypttab Things went swimmingly well (thank you to those who contributed to the wiki). One thing is a bit less than ideal - at boot - the prompt for luks password appears - but the screen gets ovrewritten with other 'stuff' - I can type the password fine its just not directly after the prompt where the *** get written - assume its the parallel boot and other things want to say 'ok'. Is there a 'nice' way to handle this? Thanks gene [testing repo - fully updated]

after openexr was updated yesterday from 1.7.0-2 -> 1.7.1-1, digikam failed to start with the following error: digikam: error while loading shared libraries: libIlmImf.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory /usr/lib/libIlmImf.so.6 used to be provided by openexr; now it's called libIlmImf.so.7 instead. providing a symlink with the old name, pointing to the new one solved the problem. bug: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/31923 -- phani.

[arch-general] [gnome 3] PrintScreen key doesn't launch gnome-screenshot

Hello. I'm searching some help, because I'm really stuck. I'm facing a weird - I mean a very weird one - problem since I reinstalled from scratch a few days ago my computer. Ok. I'm using archlinux + gnome 3 with testing repo enabled and fully up-to-date. And a fully systemd one if it is important. 1) Video : nouveau driver 2) Installed gnome 3 fully : gnome + gnome extra + gnome-utils 3) All bindings are correctly set in gnome system preferences. When I press PrintScreen, nothing happens. Nothing. Gnome-screenshot from command line start and also when I search it. I tried : 1) new key for screen capture : nothing 2) binding PrintScreen to launch another program : nothing 3) another keyboard : nothing I didn't tweak anything just installed gnome, gnome extra and gnome utils on setup time. If you have an idea, I'm glad to hear it. By the way, my install is very genuine, no tweaks besides the window button ones and date, using gnome-tweak-tool. Only extension : alternative-status-menu.
