Prevent pip from breaking the system by adopting PEP 668

Some time ago, PEP 668[1] enabled distributions to mark the python installation as externally managed by a package manager, thus preventing pip from breaking the system by either installing packages to the system or locally in the home folder. Debian has already adopted this[2]. >From my understanding, setting the flag EXTERNALLY-MANAGED only allows using pip inside of a virtualenv and bans using it anywhere else, unless the user uses the very self-explanatory flag --break-system-packages. Currently on Arch, users can run either `sudo pip`, which will install packages as system and break pacman altogether, or `pip` which automatically uses the --user flag nowadays, which will still break things if done outside of virtual env. Quoting arojas[3], "There are hundreds of bug reports around caused by user installed pip packages overriding system ones" it seems like using the new EXTERNALLY-MANAGED mechanism would greatly reduce wasted time for both users and people managing the bug tracker. Is Arch going to be adopting this behavior too? I could not find a discussion anywhere else about this. Help debugging random lockups

Hi, I have a reasonably new PC which ran with no problems for around six weeks after initial install of Arch, but then about two weeks ago it started locking up randomly. I can't see anything obvious that is causing it to lock up. Sometimes it does it while I am actively working, and other times it locks up overnight (I tend to leave it running continuously). The lockups don't all look the same. For instance, sometimes the mouse cursor is still active and can be moved around the screen, and at other times it disappears completely. I've got kernel.sysrq = 1 set in my sysctl config, but sometimes it doesn't respond to the Magic SysRq key despite that. Obviously I'd like to work out what is causing the crash, so I'm looking for some pointers as to where I should be looking and what tools I could use to investigate. Thanks in advance for any info. Issues with nerd-fonts after updating to 3.0.0

Has anyone else noticed missing glyphs when updating to the latest version? Here is 2.3.3 [image: 2.3.3.png] Here is 3.0.0 [image: 3.0.0.png] Now Here is my prompt in 2.3.3 [image: 2.3.3_prompt.png] and in 3.0.0 [image: 3.0.0_prompt.png] See how the Home folder icon is missing. What changed?

Firefox/Gnome

Good afternoon, since the upgrade to Gnome Shell 44.1 I have to start Firefox twice. The first time I only get a black window but can close it from the top menue. After that it starts normal. When starting from a terminal I get the following message which appears at 2nd successfull attempt as well: ATTENTION: default value of option mesa_glthread overridden by environment. Anyone else experiencingthis and an idea how to get an error message? Thanks Frank

Is there "depth" control for pkgctl-repo-clone like "asp export" to get only the latest commit?

All, Reading about the changes on archlinux.org and asp will stop working with svn2git going away. pkgctl-repo-clone is the replamement. It has only 3 options: -m, --maintainer NAME --universe -h, --help Does pkgctl-repo-clone simply fetch the latest commit, or does it fetch the history as well? 'asp export' provided only the latest commit without the prior versions history, etc. Can pkgctl-repo-clone do that? https://man.archlinux.org/man/pkgctl-repo-clone.1.en (4/23/2023) is silent on that aspect. https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/devtools/-/blob/master/src/lib/repo.… for pkgctl-repo is also silent on whether clone is the latest commit or full-clone with full git history, e.g. COMMANDS clone Clone a package repository https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/devtools/-/blob/master/src/lib/repo/… is just the 3 options we started with. Pacman can't pull lib32-ncurses

Hello, When attempting to pull lib32-ncurses during pacman -Syu I get the following error: warning: cannot resolve "ncurses=6.4_20230520", a dependency of "lib32-ncurses" :: The following package cannot be upgraded due to unresolvable dependencies: lib32-ncurses Anyone else able to reproduce this issue? First off - huge congrats to you all for orchestrating this obviously huge task. Thank you. Couple questions to confirm this is a mirror sync issue and not something else - since one of today's items was "test syncrepo on mirror.pkgbuild.com" I assumed this would be up to date? - pacman 6.0.2-7 - while waiting for my main mirror to sync I checked mirror.pkgbuild.com would you expect it to be there as of now: https://mirror.pkgbuild.com/pool/packages/ The link to new version is in core just not (yet) in pool. - core.db.sig Also not found on mirror.pkgbuild.com (or other mirrors I checked) none of the repos have <repo>.db.sig file pacman 6.0.2-6 shows error about core.db.sig etc being not found. Are these just - be patient, takes time to sync - or something else? Thanks, gene

Boot Archiso files using systemd-boot or GRUB

Hello folks, I am doing a little crazy, I would like to boot the content of Archiso but with the extracted files not the ISO image itself. It is clear to me that to boot I need: - amd-ucode.img - intel-ucode.img - initramfs-linux.img - vmlinuz-linux - airootfs.sfs And that the linux and initrd lines are: linux /archiso/vmlinuz-linux initrd /archiso/intel-ucode.img /archiso/amd-ucode.img /archiso/initramfs-linux.img But I'm missing the options to pass to the kernel to find the airootfs.sfs. I know that using the img_dev and img_loop parameters I can tell it where the ISO file is located and boot with it, but I'm more interested in booting directly with the extracted airootfs.sfs and without the ISO.
