Community feedback welcome as well, but this is now in testing now that the Python rebuild has moved on. Please let me know (good and bad) how things are going with it so I can move it along to [extra]. Long-term, this probably needs some packaging love so pg_upgrade is actually usable on Arch, but that has not happened yet so you will require the old-school dump/reload with these. If anyone wants to undertake this project and get this into a state where it is possible to use pg_upgrade you are more than welcome to contribute patches and such for the build and whatever else we have to do. -Dan

We had people that said they were going to be the loving parents of these things and then they walked off after one round of changes not to be seen again... I feel like we need one or two people to really step up here. Whether new or existing devs, I don't care, but there are some definite good things that can be done with regards to all of our websites, and having regular maintainers is a huge help. They wouldn't be stuck working on one single site, as they could handle re-themes for everything, help get some movement on things upstream beneficial to us (good searching for forums/wiki, "caching" in FluxBB, etc). I can't remember if we had any junior devs willing to do this type of work, but I'd be willing to serve as a mentor at first if it meant these things actually got regular maintenance. -Dan

Hi, I will move python stuff from [testing] soon so we will need a news item... Here is a draft: --begin draft-- Major python update A major python update is hitting the repos on a mirror near you. This involves update the python package from the 2.6 series to the 2.7 series. However, with python-2.7 being scheduled to be the last major release in the python-2.x series, python 2.7 is now packaged as "python2", while the "python" package will contain the python 3.x series. This means that /usr/bin/python will point at python 3.x and any programs requiring python2 should point at /usr/bin/python2 instead. All packages in the repos have been updated, but any issues found can be reported to the bug tracker (not the forum or the mailing lists). Any AUR packages using python will likely need updated to point at the correct python binary. --end draft-- Comments?

Hi all, I am in the process of moving the python rebuild into the [testing] and [community-testing] repositories. There are still a few packages that need rebuilt (the various openoffice incarnations and virtualbox-ose) so if you desperately need them you may want to hold off updating. Other than those packages, this will hopefully be a nice smooth update... I hear some TUs have been running the [staging] repo (which I personally think is crazy!) If you see any of the following, report a bug: * files linked to libpython2.6.so.1.0 * files in /usr/lib/python2.6 or /usr/include/python-2.6 * files with a "#!/usr/bin/python" or "#!/usr/bin/env python" shebang * depends/makedepends/optdepends on "python" instead of "python2" * packages that no longer work... And I mean report a bug... an email is not enough. Allan

The poppler/poppler-glib update to 0.14 includes a soname bump for poppler and poppler-glib. Packages depending on these libraries should be rebuilt. I already did all packages in extra, some packages in community still need an update. To track the rebuild, a todo list was created: http://www.archlinux.org/todo/38/ Please rebuild these packages in community-testing and flag them as complete after that.

Hi, I will prepare and release the next major version (2.8) of mono to the [extra] repository this week. I will also rebuild all necessary packages, if there are any, normally it isn't necessary. But to the big changes (http://mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-dev-public/2010-August/017497.h… and http://mono-project.com/Release_Notes_Mono_2.8) there are maybe some problems, but I don't think so. I will also add moonlight to the [extra] repo, if it's now possible to build the newest version with mono 2.8, I have to check this. Any objections against moonlight? -Daniel

LXDM had a nice stable release 0.3.0 a few weeks ago and is ready to use. It's the best light weight alternative we have next to gdm/kdm and slim/xdm. I know about Jürgens ask for help on lxde packages but I'd like to maintain lxdm in extra independent from lxde as an option for Xfce users. Any objections? -Andy

Hi, I have implemented the reading directly from the db tarball for sync databases. See the patchset on by "backend" branch (http://projects.archlinux.org/users/allan/pacman.git/log/?h=backend) Some of the changes are quite big (e.g. 9 files changed, 2184 insertions, 1571 deletions), but that is mainly moving and duplicating code in the process of splitting the handling of local and sync dbs. There is still _a lot_ of clean-up to be done in the code, but it is fully functional. This breaks pactests... lots of pactests... but that is expected as the pactest suite does not understand a tar based sync db. I would like help fixing that as I get lost in the pactest code. Anyway, here is the timing for some operations. First time is with dropped caches, the second running it again with the db cached. pacman -Syy (download time ~15-20sec) old: 1m25.197s, 0m22.445s new: 0m19.391s, 0m22.084s (download speed variation...) pacman -Sl extra old: 0m6.973s, 0m0.193s new: 0m3.974s, 0m0.390s pacman -Ss pacman old: 0m11.521s, 0m0.395s new: 0m4.171s, 0m0.477s pacman -Si pacman old: 0m6.067s, 0m0.101s new: 0m1.929s, 0m0.437s echo "n" | pacman -Su (five packages to update) old: 0m17.823s, 0m0.306s new: 0m10.577s, 0m0.489s So the tar backend gets some quite significant speed gains in the uncached case, and has marginal losses when the db is cached. Note that the entire sync db is read and parsed no matter the (sync) operation. That explains the difference in the cases with the db cached. This could be adjusted to read the package list (pkgname, pkgver-pkgrel) first and read the desc/depends files for the entire db or a single package as needed but that is probably distant future stuff... A few maintenance changes: - pull latest upstream snapshot from 2.12 branch (only a couple of minor bugfixes) - Fedora patch to not optimize so much during linking for those "i686" machines that do not handle it. Real fix will be in binutils-2.21 - Gentoo patch to fix static linking issues. Not quite accepted upstream yet but at least one of the main contributors has pulled it to his branch. - make-3.82 fix - ldd on x86_64 should work nicely with multilib packages (and not affect anyone not using them) Signoff both, Allan

Hi, The updated mailman package has been in [testing] for a long time now so I am moving it to [extra]. With this we no longer need python24 in to repos so I will remove that to the AUR. That also removes the need for db4.5, so say bye to that too. And while I am at it, say bye to db4.1 which is no longer needed by anything... The next person to update gerolde should take care with mailman as its install has moved from /home/mailman to somewhere more appropriate. That will probably need some intervention. Allan

Hi, I have pushed the new python (3.1) and python2 (2.7) packages to the new [staging] repo so rebuilds can start there. Remember the staging repo should never be used outside a build chroot... If you do, everything python related will break on your system. TUs will not be able to start uploading rebuilds yet as they do not have a staging equivalent, but we will sort something out for them once we get all the db-scripts/devtools changes tested for the main one first. The package pool is going to save us a heap of issues when this gets moved so it is worth the wait. The key things to remember with the rebuild are: - build in clean chroots. Most packages will detect "python2" or "python-2.7" once they see no "python" and use that. Some will need simple patching. - change your dependencies to python2 - check files for #!'s with "/usr/bin/python" or "/usr/bin/env python". If you have those you will need to do a sed to change them to python2. If you come across a package that you can not easily fix, add it to http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/DeveloperWiki:Python_Todo_List#Packages… and I will take a look at it. Have fun, Allan

[arch-dev-public] Putting the process of adding new mirrors on hold

Currently we have almost 90 active mirrors in the official mirror list and new requests for becoming an official mirror are appearing quite often. However, not all mirrors are good ones (outdated, incomplete, admins don't respond, etc). I marked inactive many of them during past months (including about 20 during FrOSCon), and will continue to do this until all of the mirrors meet the requirements. 22 mirrors that are in the official list did not move to the 2-tier scheme yet, which means we do not know where do they sync from, admins did not respond or there is no known email address of the admin. These will be removed from the list very soon. If you are using some mirror that was removed from the list recently and you know how to contact the admin - let me know. Considering the fact that there is no package signing support yet I don't see a reason why we should have that many mirrors, especially when they don't meet the requirements. Recently I had to defer some requests to become an official mirror from some private sites. I apologize that this caused a frustration of their admins and hope that the reasons are understandable. To make this fair to everyone I'm thinking about (temporary) putting the process of adding new mirrors on hold. -- Roman Kyrylych (Роман Кирилич)

Some packages still need it (at least my qtiplot package does, but I'm sure there are others) though, so it will be there if you need it. You may have already heard about it: LibreOffice is alive. http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/LibreOffice http://www.documentfoundation.org/ The new product right now is called "LibreOffice". It's basically a rebranched go-openoffice also know as ooo-build. The new foundation has invited Oracle to contribute to it and to give them the brand OpenOffice name. To me it seems to old Oracle based vanilla builds will very soon die. LibreOffice will soon become the new place where all development will happen in a true open manner without Oracles restrictions. With Oracle or without them in form of the long prepared fork. I'm going to prepare Arch builds for libreoffice in our svn but won't upload any binary packages until the new way gets more clear. Anyway go-openoffice is depricated as said in the #go-oo channel topic. -Andy

I just looked through it, i think at the moment there is no chance to avoid the multilib for efi, since noone can say if the x86_64 pc has a i386 or x86_64 firmware. Please correct me if i'm wrong on this. Perhaps it's better to have grub2-efi package since it's not as common as bios booting and conflict both grub2 packages on each other. This way we don't need to rename the tools. The install files should just point to the grub2 wiki they are still too long. Any other ideas? This allows you to build cross-compiled packages with the same prefix that will be used on the destination machine, and still find dependent libraries under the compiler's "sysroot". Without sysroot support, paths internal to the build system may leak into the product of the build. Sysroot support is disabled unless the --with-sysroot configure option is passed to configure, because .la files generated with sysroot support will _not_ be usable in general with older Libtools. - On non-cygwin Windows systems, we now lookup potential library file names without regard to file name case. - The old testsuite now uses the `parallel-tests' Automake test driver now for more concurrency and better test logging. For this, tests are run in verbose mode by default now. * Important incompatible changes: - Autoconf 2.62 and Automake 1.11.1 or newer are now required for bootstrapping Libtool. For using Libtool in your own projects, Autoconf 2.59 and Automake 1.9.6 should still work. - The fix_srcfile_path variable has been replaced by a more thorough mechanism triggered by the to_tool_file_cmd variable. * Changes in supported systems or compilers: - Initial support for the Microsoft C/C++ Compiler, with help from the compile script in unreleased Automake 1.12. Override the manifest tool used to embed the manifest resource through the environment variable MANIFEST_TOOL. Please note that the import library naming has changed (from foo-2.lib to foo.dll.lib) from when the code lived in its own git branch. - Initial support for the NAG Fortran compiler on GNU/Linux. * Bug fixes: - The `check-interactive' and `check-noninteractive' convenience make targets now also work for the old testsuite. - Warnings from Autoconf v2.67-36-g1e604ec about incomplete programs passed to AC_*_IFELSE tests have been fixed. - On IRIX, the test for -Wl,-exported_symbol now also works with gfortran.

Hi all, this is kind of a response to http://mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-dev-public/2010-September/01788… The pkgstats page is hosted on archlinux.de for historical reasons. That's where I started experimenting with these stats before maintaining web stuff on .org, too. But it does not really belong there and the code is quite ugly. My idea is to move it to a dedicated site like pkgstats.archlinux.org. This will mainly consist of a script that regularly creates some static html pages. Some of the calculations are quite expensive and for the future I'd like to render some graphs for trends and long term stats. For now I see no reason to learn python/django for this. Looks a lot like overkill to me. Once these is also decoupled from the archlinux.de site I'd plan to rename it to archportal and make it a lightweight webapp for local arch communities. It'll be translatable, configurable and should even run on cheap shared hosting without the need of any special infrastructure. I really like the django-based archweb, but imho it wouldn't be an ideal base for this purpose. Most features are not needed and specific to the arch main site. Also running this on shared hosting might be difficult. That's why I suggest to keep those separate and have both solutinos as simple as possible. Hi devs, I am a little busy right now. But I'd like to get this published so we'll get some usable stats for next month. In the meantime I have improved the db schema on the server so that we could easily save the history of several years. (package data are now aggregated monthly) Patches to this announcement are more than welcome. (I am tired and I dumped ice tea into my keyboard...) -- In memory to our announcement of <a href="http://www.archlinux.org/news/pkgstats-contribution-was-never-that-easy/">pkgstats</a> two years ago we are asking for your help again. By installing pkgstats you will send us a list of packages installed on your computer, the architecture and the mirror you use. This informations will help us to prioritize our efforts and make Arch even better. Contributing is as easy as installing the pkgstats package. A weekly cron job will take care of sending a package list regularly. So, go ahead install pkgstats and don't forget to tell all your friends about it. Hi everybody, pkgstats is neither in [core] or critical but nonetheless I'd like to get some positive feedback before moving it to extra and making an announcement. I have added a cronjob which is installed to /etc/cron.weekly and run as user nobody. This makes it an "install and forget" package and we'll get data regulary and just when we ask for it. Sending user data periodically to us is a critical thing. python-numeric is old, replaced by python-numpy and has had issues on x86_64 since python-2.5. These issues are far more noticeable in python-2.7 (as in python-numeric just does not work...), so I intend to drop this package from the repos. Two packages in [community] depend on it: freevo, gogh. When python-numeric gets dropped, so will these packages unless their maintainers (or someone else) do something about it. None of the rebuilds for [community] has been completed, as I was waiting for community-staging. I have built some of them locally but they are not up in any of the servers or reflected in svn. Hi, this package sets a "last password change" date for the system users like "nobody" which were defined in our default /etc/shadow. It was set to 0 previously which has the special meaning of enforcing a password change on users login. As a result su $user didn't work for such users. (see pkgstats thread) To test this change check the output of "chage -l nobody" and "su -s /bin/sh -c whoami nobody" before and after installing this package. Hi all, two years ago (http://www.archlinux.org/news/419/) I created a stupid script to get some stats about package usage from our users. I did some improvements. The client now submits the mirror used by pacman. On the server side statistics about the country (looked up by geoip) are stored and more important all data are stored with a timestamp. This way we should be able to see usage trends etc.. It would also be possible to have users submit data regularly without messing up all stats. For now please have a look at the client itself. Check the output of "-s" and make sure you are using 2.0-2; especially if you use a password in your mirrorlist. ;-) The results can be found at https://www.archlinux.de/?page=PackageStatistics It's quite rough and needs a lot of optimization. It also just shows the overall stats. Note, that my goal is to collect data that are actually useful to us and not just nice to see. If you have any suggestions or ideas let me know. I think once this is working properly we should make another announcement to get helpful stats for a package cleanup or some mirroring improvements. If you tried 8.4.4-3, ignore the fact that it ever existed...yes there were conflicting files in the two packages.

Hi all, we just figured out that the new dbscript don't work on sigurd because the use hostname -s to determine on which host they are running. On sigurd this return just "localhost". I now wonder if the /etc/hosts file on sigurd is correct. E.g. I use this config: #<ip-address> <hostname.domain.org> <hostname> 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.0.2 server.archlinux.de server hostname -s is server and hostname is server.archlinux.de While on sigurd this is used: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost sigurd 208.92.232.29 aur.archlinux.org hostname is sigurd and hostname -s is localhost. The TU server now has a staging repository, this has been requested due to the big python rebuild. All rebuilds that are made for the staging repository should be put into community-staging now. multilib now has a testing repository, in case we need it (especially useful when testing has a new toolchain). Last but not least, the adjust-permissions cronjob has been disabled on both servers - should you mess with the db file directly (which you really shouldn't), never forget to restore the right permissions.

Hi all, I'd like to add truetype fonts that provide Chinese/Japanese/Korean glyphs to [extra]. Besides TTF files, the packages would include a configuration file for /etc/fonts/conf.avail/ which would be linked to from /etc/fonts/conf.d/ by the install script, so that the font is automatically used for glyphs not provided by "higher-priority" fonts such as ttf-dejavu. For instance, I've adapted the AUR package ttf-sazanami which provides a nice font supporting Japanese characters: http://arch.vesath.org/ttf-sazanami-20040629-4.src.tar.xz Any comment or reason why I shouldn't do this is welcome! :) Best. -- Gaetan

Today Cairo 1.10.0 was flagged, so it's time to update soon again. I don't know when I will introduce the new package, as I'm still working on passing the test suite included in it. Some of the tests fail here, some even crash. One thing that will definitely change is the included xcb backend. At this moment we include --enable-xcb, which is an unsupported and experimental feature. The XCB backend hasn't seen recent development, causing weird rendering bugs and sometimes even crashes. I would suggest to ship cairo 1.10.0 without the XCB backend. This means that any package that depends on the XCB backend (awesome mainly) will no longer work with our cairo package. Hi all, atm every dev has his own scripts or he just doesn't build his packages in a chroot. Even though mkarchroot and makechrootpkg exist they are not straight forward to use and you need to configure your chroot properly. My long term goal is to create easy to use tools which will use the exact same build environment for everyone. The first attempt is now in testing with devtool-0.9.9. In short: All you need to do now is run e.g. extra-i686-build, testing-x86_64-build, staging-i686-build etc.. This will do all the boring work for you like creating the correct chroot etc.. In more detail: * By default the script will create the chroots in /var/tmp/archbuild. Make sure you have enough disk space here. You might use another dir by using the -r switch. * The -c switch will recreate the chroot even if it already exists. * You can also build i686 pacakges on x86_64. * TUs can use extra-*-build and testing-*-build to build packages for community or community-testing. * You user will need the permission to use sudo * Set PACKAGER, MAKEFLAGS, SRCDEST, PKGDEST in your ~/.makepkg.conf * the first enabled mirror in your mirrorlist will be used for the chroots; local mirrors using file:// are supported. Just a quick bugfix upstream release. Please signoff. -Andy http://sqlite.org/releaselog/3_7_2.html SQLite version 3.7.2 fixes a single bug that was discovered just hours after the release of 3.7.1. The bug can result in corruption of the database free-list after an incremental vacuum. The bug had nothing whatsoever to do with SQLite version 3.7.1 or any other recent release. The problem had been in the code for over a year, since version 3.6.16. The discovery of the problem so soon after the release of version 3.7.1 was purely coincidental. The bug fixed in 3.7.2 can result in database corruption. However, the corruption caused by this bug can almost always be fixed simply by running VACUUM on the database. And the corruption will only occur in an incrementally vacuumed database which at some point in time contains hundreds of unused pages which are slowly released back to the operating system by multiple calls to the incremental_vacuum PRAGMA. Even then, one must be particularly unlucky to hit the right combination of freed pages in order to trigger the bug. Hence the problem is quite obscure and was not noticed for over a year. Hundreds of lines of code where changed for version 3.7.2, but most of those changes were to test procedures. As is the custom with SQLite, not only was the specific bug fixed, but new tests where put in place to detect and prevent similar kinds of bugs elsewhere in the code. We believe that one should not just fix the bug, but also fix the process that generated the bug. Jan Steffens and me spent the this weekend putting together a multilib toolchain and a clean lib32-glibc package. I wanted to do this for at least two years, and we finally managed to do it on FrOSCon now. This is the plan of attack on this: * Maintain the PKGBUILDs in svn-community/${pkgname}/trunk/ * Create a separate repo 'multilib', (svn-community/${pkgname}/repos/multilib-x86_64) * Remove ALL multilib packages from community. Do NOT mix pure 64 bit with multilib. All multilib must go into the new multilib repository. * Rebuild all multilib packages with the multilib compiler to solve the numerous problems encountered by the hackish "copy our 32 bit packages into another path" approach. * Find TUs and Devs willing to work on multilib (please add your name to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Multilib_Project) Any comments are welcome. We will upload the multilib packages and PKGBUILDs into a small test repository in a minute for review.

hey guys, Yesterday I went through all open bug reports for kde 4.5.0 and was able to close all of them (old user config issues/only updated part of packages to testing/etc) except one [1], which seems to be ati/intel related, causing the screen not to be updated when changing some system settings if opengl compositing is used on some ati/intel cards. opengl itself should work, just changing the settings hangs the screen, xrender and no compositing are not affected (there is no fix yet and it may as well be a bug in mesa or some). As there are no other open kde 4.5.0 bug reports, I suppose it is time to push it to extra and make place in testing now the translations are in place. Hello all, As some might have noticed on the commit list, I've been busy with xorg-server 1.9. This times we're doing things way different than the past. This release comes with another API/ABI bump for both input and video drivers, so old drivers are no longer compatible with this version of xorg-server. All drivers with source available have been updated to work with xorg-server 1.9. Server releasenotes: xorg-server has been split: - xorg-server-common - common files used by all other subpackages. - xorg-server - the usual X.Org server people will use. - xorg-server-xnest - Xnest server. - xorg-server-xephyr - Xephyr server. - xorg-server-xvfb - XVfb server. - xorg-server-xdmx - Xdmx server. - xorg-server-devel - the only package required for building drivers. All conflicts and versioned dependencies have been removed. The reason for this is that though we handle dependencies/conflicts a bit, it was still possible to install a new server with old drivers, resulting in the same broken system as the other way around. We don't want to spend time in tracking all these versions all the time, especially when it comes to binary driver compatibility. Some utilities have been removed from the dependency tree. It is possible that some applications still need these things to operate correctly, but they're still in the xorg group. Driver releasenotes: Versioned dependencies are gone. Makedependencies have been updated to match only the required packages. Binary drivers have not been updated. These drivers may or may not work, depending on vendor support. For binary drivers that are not supported officially, adding an IgnoreABI option to the X configuration might help.

Since input properties have been introduced in xorg-server, the xf86misc extension has been deprecated. The extension has already been removed from xorg-server, so there's no server side implementation anymore. I removed the dependency from all remaining clients, except for kdebase-workspace, which is in both testing and extra at this moment. The dependency has already removed from kdebase-workspace in svn. Please remove this dependency from your chroots and make sure packages no longer build against it. When the last packages have the dependency removed, I can take the package out of the repository.

Hi all, as the new dbscripts are quite done I'll send you a list with the most important changes. (If you are in a hurry read at least the next paragraph) Incompatible changes: * db-update will now update all packages found in your staging dir from all repositories * db-move has now a different syntax: "<repo-from> <repo-to> <pkgname|pkgbase> ..." You can move as many packages as you like at once. There is no need to specify an architecture here. * The wrapper scripts like testing2core have been removed as they are no longer needed; use db-move instead * testing2x now moves both arches at the same time (testing2x64 has been removed) * I have also started a user documentation at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/DeveloperWiki:dbscripts Important changes: * implementation of a package pool: all packages are now stored in pool/packages or pool/community directories on the ftp server. The current repository directories like extra/os/i686 only contain symlinks. As a results moving pacakges between repositories is now a matter of altering symlinks and as such very cheap. This should solve the problems with not fully synced mirrors we had in the past when a lot of packages were moved from e.g. testing to extra. * Packages are only switched to this new layout if they are updated or moved. This way the migration should be slow but smooth. * db-move can now handle multiple packages within one "transaction". General improvements: * unit tests based on shunit2 * heavy refactoring to share common functions * Added more integrity checks which are run before the repositories are touched. * rewritten functions for easier and smaller code * the scripts can handle other db compressions than gz (but there is no migration path yet) Note: even though the result is more or less a rewrite there are still things that can be improved or new useful features that can be added. The tests only cover some basic use cases so we should still have a look at it once the new version is deployed. I think we should deploy these soon (before Allan's big python rebuild party) with CLEANUP_DRYRUN enabled during the first days. This is a bugfix/stability release over 3.1.2 Significant changes are: - mapfile now lives in a fixed location which default to /dev/.mdadm/map but can be changed at compile time. This location is choses and most distros provide it during early boot and preserve it through. As long a /dev exists and is writable, /dev/.mdadm will be created. Other files file communication with mdmon live here too. This fixes a bug reported by Debian and Gentoo users where udev would spin in early-boot. - IMSM and DDF metadata will not be recognised on partitions as they should only be used on whole-disks. - Various overflows causes by 2G drives have been addressed. - A subarray of an IMSM contain can now be killed with --kill-subarray. This one is especially suspect as of its 71096 files (and 71094 in the other architecture), a ton of them are things like *.py, *.pyc, *.html, or *.png files. Hi, I have been tracking down a python3 bug and it turns out to be caused by our chroot building. Essentially the permissions of /dev/shm are different in the chroot than on the system: allan@mugen /home/arch/chroot/stable-i686/copy/dev > ls -ld shm drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 40 Jul 12 15:16 shm allan@mugen /dev > ls -ld shm drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 40 Aug 14 10:23 shm So when configure scripts try to test for POSIX semaphores by writing in that directory, they fail. Looking at the relevant line in mkarchroot: mount -o bind /dev "${working_dir}/dev" Doing that manually show the same issue. Should we add chmod 1777 "${working_dir}/dev/shm" after the mount? It fixes my issue but feels hackish. Any other suggestions? Allan

Upstream changelog: INCOMPATIBLE CHANGES: * This release changes the default for 'store-legacy-msghdr' flag for log sources. In previous releases this had to be enabled explicitly, because of the performance penalties, which do not apply to 3.1. The original behaviour can be restored by explicitly specifying 'dont-store-legacy-msghdr'. Bugfixes: * When syslog-ng is reloaded, the local hostname value was not refreshed, causing syslog-ng to remember the hostname until the next restart. This may not play nice with DHCP configured hostnames, which may change dynamically. * When several SIGHUP signals are received in quick succession, the last one may have been dropped. This problem is fixed. * Make sure that numbers never get resolved using getpwnam/getgrnam (e.g. libnss functions), because this may cause deadlocks if the NSS provider is LDAP and the LDAP server is trying to log a message to syslog about invalid usernames. * Fixed flush_timeout() handling in for non-file destinations. Enabling flush_lines()/flush_timeout() for a non-file destination, either using a global option, or a per-destination option could cause excess CPU usage as long as the destination wasn't writable. * In case patterndb has a syntax error when reloading the file, syslog-ng automatically reverts to the old version instead of dropping pattern matching altogether. * Fixed pdbtool to properly handle accented characters in the command line. * Fixed the use of the greedy and drop-invalid flags for csv-parser. * Fixed a possible but rare memory leak in the handling of message suppression. Other changes: * Added "update-patterndb" command that merges patterndb files from ${sysconfdir}/patterndb.d and produces ${localstatedir}/patterndb.xml, the default file of the db-parser(). * Make it possible to specify the path to the syslog-ng control socket using a command line option in order to make it easier to launch multiple syslog-ng instances. * Introduced a new, cleaner syntax to specify that the permissions of a file are not to be changed. Use owner/group/perm options of a file without any parameters instead of "-1". The old mechanism had the problem that both per-file and global settings had to use "-1" to effectively stop syslog-ng from changing the uid/gid/perm values. The new syntax will make it possible to specify defaults in the global options section and customize those on a per-file basis. * syslog-ng will not go into the background if either the --syntax-only or --debug options are specified. FYI, I installed 2.6.35.1-1 from testing on my system (nforce2 motherboard, silicon image sata controller, WD raptor sata disks) this kernel does not load sd_mod during boot, which - in my case - causes the encrypt hook to not find the device it should decrypt, which breaks my boot process. in the early userspace shell i can confirm there is no /dev/sd* or /dev/disk/by-uuid I tried regenerating initcpio from rescue media, but this did not help. I think I will install the earlier kernel again or maybe the LTS, unless someone has a better idea. Dieter

Hi devs, my last attempt for this didn't get much feedback so I try to keep it short this time...for more details see the old thread at: http://mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-dev-public/2010-May/016770.html This time I am just asking to give it a try. It's implementation is trivial and if we feel it wont work out we could easily remove it later. If there are no real objections I'd like to implement this soon; let's say next week. Even if you don't see the benefit right now I would be pleased to at least give it a try. The idea can be summed up like this: testing: * don't break packages intentionally * don't push incomplete rebuilds staging: * a global staging repository for collaboration its more similar to your ~/staging dir than a regular repository * mostly meant for incomplete rebuilds * will be excluded from mirroring (for now) I am open for any questions or suggestions. They have enlarged the post.message column from text to mediumtext. Unfortunately this means rewriting the whole table for innodb; so their web update script cannot be used. (yes, I already complained and will open a bug report) My plan is to issue the following command manually before the update: alter table posts change message message mediumtext This takes about 10 minutes here and it seems the DB is not locked during that time. Hi all, hacking on dbscritps was always a pain because manual tests were too much work...so we mostly "tested" on the live system. To make our live easier I have started to add a test suite based on shunit2 (see http://code.google.com/p/shunit2/; if we want to use this in other scripts I could put that into extra). I have added some helper scripts which create some sample packages, svn repo, staging dir etc. within a temp dir. Tests are more or less easy now; see http://projects.archlinux.org/dbscripts.git/tree/test/runTest for some examples. (this is also the script you have to run to check dbscripts) I'll add some more tests and hopefully new features to our dbscripts can be added more easily without the fear of major breakage. I split away /etc/{services,protocols} into the iana-etc package, which autogenerates those files from the IANA data in the PKGBUILD. The new filesystem package also removes the 'man3x->man3' symlink, nobody ever knew what it was good for. filesystem now has iana-etc as a dependency, which again has no dependencies. I hope that is fine.

I will replace libelf with elfutils as this allows the building of the useful tools/perf. There is also a ppl update which has a few soname bumps. Hi all, Here comes a rebuild so large that our TODO list had trouble handling it! Hopefully all packages are now in the rebuild list.... At a total of 518 packages long, it puts the combined libpng/libjpeg rebuild to shame. Python-2.7 has been releases and will be the last 2.x official release of python. So it is time to switch to python-3.x as our /usr/bin/python and python-2.7 as our /usr/bin/python2. See http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/DeveloperWiki:Python_Todo_List for all the details about how to achieve this. It is actually not that hard. I had a system converted when python-3.1 was released as a test run. The main key is to build packages in a clean chroot so that they detect and point their files to /usr/bin/python2. Some packages are stupid and require a sed at the end of packaging to fix that. Because this rebuild is crazy stupid, I would like to plan when it is going to occur. We will need to clear out [testing] as much as possible over the coming week or two (what is happening with perl...). Also, a new KDE is a the beginning of next month so I would not want to conflict with that. Any other major rebuilds on the way? Should we do this in a separate repo? Allan

This new build fixes the b43 trouble lots of users have been having. This package is NOT in testing (2.6.35 currently resides there), but at: http://dev.archlinux.org/~thomas/kernel26/ Please sign off (also, please someone with the b43 problem test if this is fixed).
