[arch-general] Some flowers & request for advice

Hello all, Over the past 3 months I've installed Arch on five different machines: an IBM R51, a Fujitsu-Siemens W360, my home machine which has no pedigree, an EEE-1000H and an today an EEE-904HA. Apart from one major panic related to the libpng14 update there have not been any significant problems, and the ones that emerged have been solved by prompt feedback on this list or by the information provided on the Wiki. Five more W360 are to follow soon. All this merits a big thanks to the developers and maintainers of Arch, and to all those who have kindly provided help. I don't think I could have had the same results (in all cases a setup *very* close to what was required) as easily from any other distro. One of my next projects will require touchscreens for a 'kiosk' type of application, and I'm still trying to find the right hardware. Any suggestions will be much appreciated (if they work with Arch of course). Ciao, -- FA O tu, che porte, correndo si ? E guerra e morte !

Hi, After a recent upgrade (the mkinitcpio replacements), I am unable to insmod vboxnetflt & vboxnetadp (though vboxdrv does). [root@Linux ~]# modprobe vboxnetflt FATAL: Error inserting vboxnetflt (/lib/modules/2.6.32-ARCH/misc/vboxnetflt.ko): Invalid module format [root@Linux ~]# modprobe vboxnetadp FATAL: Error inserting vboxnetadp (/lib/modules/2.6.32-ARCH/misc/vboxnetadp.ko): Invalid module format [root@Linux ~]# What's the solution ? -- Nilesh Govindarajan Site & Server Adminstrator www.itech7.com

Hello all, Trying to translate some of the entries in /etc/X11/xdm/archlinux/Xresources to Italian I get strange results. Xlogin*greeting:Benvenuti to Salome works OK. But Xlogin*namePrompt:Nome d'utente\040: Xlogin*passwdPrompt:Parola d'ordine\040: just give me the defaults. I tried replacing all spaces with \040, same result. I also tried enclosing the text in double quotes, but then the quotes are printed as well. So what is the correct syntax ? Another strange thing is that on this system a failed login does not display the 'Incorrect' message but restarts xdm immediately. hi i've bought a new notebook (hp pavilion dm1-1150sl) and installed archlinux. i have see a strange thing with powertop, i'm running the vanilla arch kernel26, and i have see this behaviour: Cn Avg residency P-states (frequencies) C0 (cpu occupata) (31,6%) C0 0,0ms ( 0,0%) C1 mwait 0,1ms ( 0,7%) C4 mwait 0,0ms (67,8%) Wakeups-from-idle per second : 31483,5 interval: 10,0s --- as you can see, i have a LOT of wakeups per seconds very low c1 states lot of c0 and c4 states, a wattmeter tell me that archlinux consume about 25/26watt Then i have boot a live ubuntu distro and see this: Cn permanenza media P-state (frequenze) C0 (cpu occupata) ( 0,6%) polling 0,0 ms ( 0,0%) C1 mwait 26,7 ms (68,6%) C4 mwait 1,2 ms (30,8%) Wakeup-da-idle al secondo: 281,3 intervallo: 15,0s --- as you can see the wakeups are a LOT lower than on arch and we have lot of c1 and c4 state, power consumption is about 20W, the same that i have with win7 (about 18/20w). Guys, if any of you are subscribed to planet arch, then you must have noticed a problem with some of the feeds. The problem is, the summary of the feed displays fine, but when i open the feed, it shows the xml of the feed instead of showing the website. http://planet.archlinux.org/atom.xml (this is shown). This happens with only a few of the feeds. Recently happened with these feeds: Arch Haskell News: February 2010, Archiso-live 20100217 Release. I am using firefox with newsfox. [arch-general] Xscreensaver corrupts ext4 / partition

Hi all, I have 4 boxes, all with the same partitioning scheme and using ext4 for all of them. This weird thing has only showed up in one of them. Some time back while playing some video and with xscreensaver active, the timeout for xscreensaver expired and then password was required... Bad thing that xscreensaver corrupted / so that it couldn't be unlocked, and under console there was no way to loging, some misplaced inodes or something... Hard reboot was required, and then at first /tmp was so corrupted that it was necessary a phisical fix... After all that, what happens is that whenever launching xscreensaver-demo, if I had a terminal open then doing cat, or any other thing fails, since no libraries are found... If at that moment I go to console, the message I get is ext4 /dev/sda7 (partition for /) is corrupted with some inode misplacement or similar... Then at that time there's nothing else to do but to hard reset... BTW, when loading xscreensaver-demo from terminal, the 1st thing that shows up is: (xscreensaver-demo:2830): libglade-WARNING **: Could not load support for `gnome': libgnome.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I think that is due exactly for the same thing, that ext4 got corrupted, since by doing cat or any other command shows that libraries are not found or something... Has anyone seen this? Any way to get xscreensaver working back? It was actually working before, and it is working on all other boxes. Weird thing is that without xscreensaver I don't get any problem, so my work around right now is not to use it. I initially got under the impression that the ext4 corruption wa sdue to something else, so I re-installed all packages, but that didn't help (got list of packages, and install them all through pacman -S)... If this is known and there's way to overcome it, other than just not using xscreesaver at all, please let me know... Thanks, -- Javier.

[arch-general] Problems with ifplugd and net-auto-wired

Hi, I've two problems with ifplugd and net-auto-wired. When ifplugd is started during boot my speakers make a weird and very loud "moep" sound. When started from a console after boot no such sound occurs. The second problem I have is if net-auto-wired starts during boot time it will not detect any networks.
