I'm not really sure when cpufreq stopped working, maybe 2 or 3 months ago. It was working fine before and I don't really remember making any change in configuration. The firmware is also the latest, but I must load microcode (from intel-ucode) to get a newer firmware for my CPU. Some details of my box: x86_64, SSD linux-ck-corex 3.4.4-2, but the same happens with linux 3.4.4-2. I also tested linux-3.3.8-1 without luck nvidia-ck-corex 302.17-1 systemd, but the same happens when booting with standard initscripts I have only ArchLinux installed in my laptop since I bought it (so I cannot test in Window$ if frequency scaling is working) I found a similar report 2 months ago, apparently not solved yet: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=140259 I don't have overheating problems though. [arch-general] A question specifically about upgrading an existing arch system from grub legacy to grub without UEFI or GPT

I have been following the discussions in various places including on this list about the forthcoming change from grub to become grub-legacy and the default bootloader becoming grub2. On all my arch systems I have grub with MBR partitioning, booting to BIOS initially - and none of my systems is modern enough to have UEFI instead of BIOS. So I have been reading up on what I will need to do when grub2 version 2.00 appears in [core] - and how to successfully achieve the changeover. However I still cannot determine if it will be "necessary" to make sure that there is a post-MBR gap of 2MiB between the MBR and the first partition when the system will remain using MBR partitioning and grub2 will be the bootloader. So this applies to systems with no GPT partitions, and no UEFI. In my systems that have been running some time some have 64 sectors to where the start of the first partition is, and others have 2,000 sectors which is about 1MiB - and I still don't know if grub2 version 2.00 will not work on those systems or not. I do know that other distros such as Fedora version F16 have systems running successfully using grub2 prior to version 2.00 with MBR partitioning and BIOS and boot perfectly well without the 2MiB post MBR gap. Perhaps this changes with the release of grub2 version 2.00? Achieving a post-MBR gap of at least 2MiB will be a painful process as shrinking the first partition and then moving it towards partition 2 with an MBR partitioned disk is time consuming and not always successful in those systems where in the past I have adjusted the partitions on a drive. Maybe the recent versions of tools such as PartedMagic will cope better than it did a couple of years ago? Can someone help out with a clear explanation please. I am usually pretty good with upgrades and preparation but this has foxed me! i.e. specifically for a BIOS-MBR hard drive using grub2 that it is vital to have a post-MBR gap of at least 2 MiB (where no GPT partitioning will be in use)? Dear list, my system is no more running smooth after yesterday bunch of upgrades. The box has very classic and standard settings, and regularly upgraded. The symptoms: -when login in runlevel 3, the password prompt appears twice -after starx (XFCE4), all my previous open windows (Firefox, thunderbirds,clementine) take age ( 3-4 mn to display the contents). -Thunderbird return invalid password to mail server, please retry. Devon, Thanks for your support. You're right. This is not intended to be a political debate, so I have been using a neutral word, Taiwan, rather than other more official but sensitive, less common name. It's the fact that ISO is not reflecting how most of the world see it. ISO does not have authority over the country name. ISO does not obligate to reflect how world sees things too. I'm not asking for special treatments. I'm just asking you to follow the convention created from previous experience to prevent the misunderstanding and debates. I want to point out one thing. I will be willing to bring this to the upstream project. However, if the upstream project is unwilling to make the changes and maybe suggest us to fork a new project instead. The choice of using the which plugin will fall back to the ArchLinux community. The whole debate will go through again. This is not something just my imagination. This is a real story happened in Rails(Ruby's counterparts of django) community where Rails split out country list as a separate project and people do fork to provide a better version. Dear all ArchLinux developers, please think it through again. Thanks. I am the reporter of FS#30444, and I've filed and patched a bug of a little project with the identical problem: If you are using iso-codes from extra repo, there is a common name of “Taiwan, Province of China” which is named “Taiwan”. And by using that, “Taiwan, Province of China” and “Venezuela, Bolivarian Republic of” are changed to “Taiwan” and “Venezuela”. I don't hope these mirrors get removed by the way. One of the mirrors in Taiwan is Tier 1. -- Yao Wei

[arch-general] Request of printing warnings at the end of pacman upgrade

Hi, Every arch user may experience such a situation--after a system upgrade, the system is totally unusable. That is neither the problem of that upgrade, nor the user. In fact, during the upgrading process some important warnings (such as `please reinstall your bootloader', or `please reload the modules yourself') are printed but missed by the user. Especially when hundreds of packages are going to be upgraded, thousands of lines of information will wash away the important warnings. Although in the wiki, arch officially said that you should check every output line during system upgrade, most people will usually do the following things to upgrade the system: turn on the computer, type pacman -Syu, hit Y, then left the computer alone and check back half an hour later. Few will watch the whole upgrading process and see each line of the output. So, I recommend that, why don't we print a single message `Some critical packages have been upgraded and some operations needed to be done by yourself, please check back the /var/log/pacman.conf file for some important information.' AT THE END of a system upgrade which has some packages upgrade marked `important'? Packages itself can specify for a single upgrade related to a specific version whether this is an `important' upgrade, in its *.install file. And it is totally NOT against KISS rule, is it? -------------------- BTW, I suggest that add a character (I, W, or E, for 'info' 'warning' 'error') into every line of output to the log file. the old style is like this: [2012-06-25 20:34] The way fontconfig is configured has been changed. and the new one may be this: [2012-06-25 20:34 (W)] The way fontconfig is configured has been changed. So the advantage is that, user can use 'cat /var/log/pacman.log | grep (W)' to see all warning messages or 'grep (E)' to see all errors without any clutter. This can be very useful in diagnosing after the system becomes unusable. If you are disagree with me, just type 'cat /var/log/pacman.log' and try to find something useful in a short time. If you cannot do that, why don't you think this is a good suggestion?

I might be mistaken, but I understand through reading different forums, that this SW loopback using alsa utilities beyond alsamixer shouldn't be necessary. Is that right, or it's just that alsa doesn't offer such capability for this card? If someone has figured how to avoid using the "arecord | aplay" loop, please let me know. BTW, I've played around with the controls, including Mux, and there's no way I can dispense of "arecord | aplay". I haven't added additional modules, like snd-mixer-oss or snd-pcm-oss, but they don't sound relevant to me at first (might be mistaken though), :-) Thanks, -- Javier.

[arch-general] Shutdown and reboot not working after last weekend update

Folks sorry for cross posting this at forum and mailing lists but so far no solution came there. Folks after the last upgrade I can no longer shutdown nor reboot my machine (I'm using it as root). The command simply hangs and nothing happens. I've done some research and found https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=141155 this but that does not seems to be my issue. I'm clueless which logs can I provide you in order to diagnose what can be the problem? Important thing, I have only 1 session running and the system report going down still it never gets past the tty broadcast as it seems. Ideas? SO you can for it with: echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq echo b > /proc/sysrq-trigger Forcing a shut down, still no clear way out of it. Ideas? I was asked to perform a fsck which failed.It reported /dev/sda5 was mounted. Is there any proper way I should use to call fsck? I did create a /fsck file on / is there other more appropriate command to do it? Problably you asked for my fstab expecting an error like this right? Would it be better to run fsck from a livecd? regards, Victor

Hello All, I'm seeing a strange issue when I suspend my system. If I suspend using either the command: "dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest="org.freedesktop.UPower" /org/freedesktop/UPower org.freedesktop.UPower.Suspend" or running "pm-suspend" as root, the system will shutdown and go into suspend mode like it should. But if I execute either of these commands again, it doesn't suspend. What I found is that after suspending the first time I can see that "/usr/sbin/pm-suspend" is still active. After killing this process I am then able to suspend again. Any ideas on what's going on here? Why would the suspend process still be running after resuming from suspend? Thanks, Randy
