[arch-general] pacman question - missing files (repost)

(Reposting in plain text - so sorry - been using thunderbird which automatically does that for mail lists - now with it's impending demise I am trying other mailers - like evolution ... ) I've seen this behavior a couple of times now. Here's what happened today. After installing systemd and libsystemd 230-4 (updating from 230-3). No errors reported. However computer refused to boot properly. Booting recovery and examining the logs showed that libsystemd.so was missing - complaint by udev. /usr/lib/libsystemd.so was present as a link pointing to libsystemd.so.0.15.0 which was absent. running pacman -Qk libsystemd confirmed the problem file. reinstalling libsystemd from cache - in recovery chroot - gave a warning about the link and the the libraryfile something like - warning: could not get file information for /usr/lib/libsystemd.so and .same for .so.0.15.0 And indeed the file was still absent. from same cachea rea I installed libsystemd and systemd 230-3 (i.e. downgrading) - this worked and the library is back now and I could boot with udev dying a squirrely death. I have had same problem (missing files with no warnings) with other updates - last time was glibc - that was fun to fix ... konsole wont start without glibc There were other less impactful ones in recent months - about time pacman 5 moved to testing - not saying its pacman itself - but something is amiss - could be hardware, kernel or ?? I have no errors in the log files. and do not see any issues from smartctl either. In all cases pacman -Qk finds the problem - and in all cases there were no errors reported on initial install -and there were similar warnings as zbove on re-install of same package from cache file. In every case there was a shared library with a sym link - and the actual library file was missing. Any suggestions for tracking this down? I assume if the package file was corrupted pacman would complain and redownload - so I'm a bit stumped ... thanks for any guidance. gene

[arch-general] DKMS question around removal of kernel modules

When I install a new kernel, I notice that DKMS removes previous kernel modules as well as adding them to the new kernel. In the real old days these were not removed at all - so removal is a good thing. The issue is that the old kernel is still running and until machine is rebooted the modules wont be available I would think. I wonder - Is there a way to mark the deletion to happen after the new kernel is booted ? I may well be missing something of course. Installed 4.6.2 kernel while 4.6.1 running - pacman says: (1/1) Remove DKMS modules ==> dkms -q remove -q -m vboxguest -v 5.0.20_OSE -k 4.6.1-2-ARCH ==> dkms -q remove -q -m vboxhost -v 5.0.20_OSE -k 4.6.1-2-ARCH ...==> dkms -q install -m vboxguest -v 5.0.20_OSE -k 4.6.2-1-ARCH ==> dkms -q install -m vboxhost -v 5.0.20_OSE -k 4.6.2-1-ARCH ... Hi guys, After more than two months ago Lyx [1] released the version 2.1.4 [2], this is a minor and maintenance release (strongly recommended), in august, and after flagged as out-date and wait some days, I contacted with the maintainer (Ronald) and he didn't answer me (I understand, maybe he is busy) I tested for more of two months and this release work fine, I would like to be the maintainer of this package but I am not TU. [arch-general] Where to put info about Install Problem w/Partitioning due to Prior VMFS_volume & Hardware RAID?

Archdevs, I wanted to drop a note in the wiki about how to deal with reuse of drives that have either prior VMFS_Volume filesystem (GPT table) or hardware RAID information on the disk. I was converting the drives to mdraid and ran into a number of failures converting to MBR. They were two separate but related issues that caused mdadm to be unable to use the drives. e.g. root@archiso ~ # blkid /dev/sr0: UUID="2016-03-01-15-50-36-00" LABEL="ARCH_201603" TYPE="iso9660" PTUUID="2237702c" PTTYPE="dos" /dev/sda: UUID="LSI ^P" TYPE="ddf_raid_member" /dev/loop0: TYPE="squashfs" /dev/sdb: UUID="LSI ^P" TYPE="ddf_raid_member" /dev/md126: PTUUID="b6fbd994" PTTYPE="dos" (the VMFS_Volume info was shown in cfdisk) The VMFS information and LSI Megaraid infor was removed by overwriting the first 8M of the first partition with dd, e.g.: root@archiso ~ # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda1 bs=8M count=1 1+0 records in 1+0 records out 8388608 bytes (8.4 MB, 8.0 MiB) copied, 0.01363 s, 615 MB/s Zapping the GPT partition (with gdisk) was required to remove all parts of the GPT partition before the disks could be used by mdadm (I didn't know GPT wrote partition information to both the beginning and end of the disk and couldn't simply be removed with tools like fdisk or cfdisk, but required a tool that could zap all GPT info. root@archiso ~ # gdisk /dev/sda GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 1.0.1 Partition table scan: MBR: MBR only BSD: not present APM: not present GPT: present Found valid MBR and GPT. Which do you want to use? 1 - MBR 2 - GPT 3 - Create blank GPT This info didn't seem right as a not on the beginner's page, it didn't fit nicely on the RAID wiki either (even though that seemed like the appropriate spot) and didn't fit on the Partitioning wiki either (that page had nothing related to disk reuse) It seems like this is worth noting for anyone else attempting to reuse disks from a prior VMWare or hardware raid config.
