There is now another smaller problem. In order to make use of Wayland with GTK+3, libxkbcommon should be moved into extra first. Can anyone do that? Lot of GTK+3 apps can be ran in Weston using GDK_BACKEND=wayland.

Archlinux uses llvm-amdgpu-snapshot which is Tom Stellard's snapshot. In 9.1-devel, --with-llvm-shared-libs is turned on by default if you use --enable-opencl. On the other side, LLVM contains a shared library, enabled by --enable-shared, called libLLVM-<version>.so (ie libLLVM-3.2.so) located in llvm libdir (/usr/lib/llvm in Archlinux) which contains ALL of static libraries linked into ONE SHARED library. On the other hand, you can use CMake and build all of static libraries as shared. The first mentioned works for me very well. I am not sure what's the condition of that in Mesa 9.0 world. Languages: English and/or German I experienced it as very helpful, when installing a *NIX and having a handbook available on a tablet PC. [arch-general] System doesn't load LVM volumes when booting in single user mode

Like the subject says, when I boot directly into single user mode, system doesn't load my LVM volumes. So the only way I can realistically use single user mode (since many of my key files are on LVM volumes) is to boot the system to multi-user mode, and the "telinit s" to drop back down to single user. This seems like an error, and that systemd should be starting LVM volumes even in single user mode. Anyone have any idea what the problem might be and/or a workaround? Thanks, DR

Hi :) is there an audio distro based on Arch Linux, that already is rawly set up for audio studio production. Another requirement for me is, that such a distro shouldn't cause or at least only less inconsistencies, when using the Arch and AUR repositories. I suspect http://didjix.blogspot.com isn't intended for audio studios? Perhaps I missed an audio distro listed at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_Based_Distributions_%28Active%29 ;) when I searched for "music" and "audio" on this site. If there shouldn't be an audio distro, I'll install a _real_ Arch Linux :(, ;). Resp., is one of the distros that come with Xfce by default uncritical regarding to the used packages (dependency issues)? And will one of those distros install not to much services etc. that I would have to remove for audio work? Regards, Ralf

[arch-general] Problem with NFS on shutdown

I've got two machines in my local network that provide NFS shares. One is an old Raidsonic NAS (running a current version of OpenWRT), the other a dedicated server running Slackware). I normally mount the shares manually (the machine that is giving me a problem is a laptop, so its often not connected to my own network). The problem comes when I try to shut the laptop down (or restart it). Unless I've manually unmounted the NFS shares, the machine will hang and fail to shut down. In some instances, I've been able to use CTRL-C to break out of the stall, but frequently, I can only turn the machine off, which is not exactly ideal. I've been playing with the nfs exports, currently have the following: /mnt/sda2/stor 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0(rw,sync,no_wdelay,nohide,no_root_squash) (this is on the Raidsonic) and /mnt/sda2/stor 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0(rw,sync,no_wdelay,nohide,no_root_squash) on the Slackware server. The problem is specific to Arch - I've got two other distros installed on the laptop (though Arch is my usual OS). From SalineOS or Salix, the laptop will shut down or restart without having to manually unmount the NFS shares prior to shutdown. I suspect I've not got something set up correctly in systemd, but I'm currently at a loss to work out what. If I manually unmount the shares before shutdown, there is no problem. I've also tried adding the unmount to /etc/rc.local.shutdown, but that doesn't work - the system still hangs during shutdown. I'm sure that rc.local.shutdown is being executed - if I shut down without the shares mounted, I can see messages that they are not mounted. I'm not sure if I should be looking at the NFS export parameters on the hosts, or systemd on the laptop, though I've tried some variations on the exports without changing the behaviour. Does anyone know what I should be looking at to solve this? Paul.

Hi all, I have a strange problem with my GDM. The problem started when I got a new monitor combined with updates. First I got a new monitor and connected (switching from DVI -> VGA cable to DVI -> DVI cable). It was different resolution as well 1900x1200. At the same session (ans without restarting) I upgraded after a week or something with the new kernel 3.7.6-1-ARCH and latest nvidia drivers 313.18.3-3. After that point the gdm starts (but slower than before) and as soon as I put my password and tried to start my session, the background image is lost (turns to black) I see some flickering and the Gnome-shell session loads but I can't access anything. I had this problem before randomly so I didn't pay attention but now it's consistent. I can move the mouse around without affecting the Gnome-shell though. journalctl [1] shows the above message along with NVRM errors right after I login. I tried downgrading to lower kernel and nvidia drivers but it didn't help as I cannot load the nvidia driver when I downgrade (I think I need to rebuild the nvidia kernel module and don't know how). I tried deleting the .config, .gconf, gnome2, gnome2-private, .nv folders from my home folder in case it was configuration but nothing. Anyone have some suggestion? Downgrading cairo to [core] fixes that for me (and allows me to build things again) but the one in testing somehow breaks pkg-config. [arch-general] HDMI Alsa sound problem from flashplayer 64 bit

I have a machine which has an HDMI monitor and which has sound coming through the monitor via HDMI just fine when playing music from Amarok and login system sounds play fine too. I had selected the appropriate hdmi channel in kmix for all the available audio playback devices. Also I can get sound coming out of the monitor speakers with: aplay -D plughw:0,7 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav However if I run chrome and play a flash video the video I can see fine - but there is no sound. I have read all the available arch wiki articles about hdmi sound including that at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Advanced_Linux_Sound_Architecture#HDMI… as soon as I make a ~/.asound file with either of the suggested contents KDE immediately tells me that the hdmi sound for that output has been selected to be removed and offers me to make that permanent! This is for an x86_64 arch system all up to date - and I have flashplayer installed. Can anyone guide me as to where to look for a solution that will get this particular system playing sound from flash content on web pages in chrome? I have several other (non-hdmi) systems which have no problem with sound from web pages playing flash content. Thanks -- mike c

I promised I would post when I had this hdmi sound problem resolved - after a while spent trying to sort this out today I have now it working, and it may be useful to list the details in case anyone else has had a similar issue getting sound from flashplayer videos running in the chrome browser. I installed pulseaudio along with three other packages: # pacman -S pulseaudio paprefs pavucontrol pulseaudio-alsa I also noticed that I needed one of the gstreamer plugin packages that I had inadvertently missed when I had previously installed the initial set of packages via a simple script. # pacman -S gstreamer0.10-good-plugins It is possible that my failure to get things working with alsa alone may have been due to not having this package installed before. However once the following settings had been put in place all sound now works properly and well: >From the KDE desktop, In Kmix under Audio Hardware setup: selected: Builtin audio Sound Card, with: Profile - Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output + Analogue Stereo Input and under Device configuration selected: Playback (Builtin Audio Digital Stereo (HDMI)) with Connector HDMI/Displayport. Then under Device preference chose Builtin Audio Digital Stereo (HDMI) for all the output types. Sound works now on all applications including from flashplayer video with audio within the chrome browser. It is entirely possible that if I had installed the gstreamer0.10-good-plugins package at the outset that there may not have been a problem at all and therefore this may have been just as much an issue with all sound connections. Thank you for the replies to my original post and for suggesting that I change from alsa to pulseaudio. The controls both in pavucontrol and the now changed controls in kmix with pulseaudio are better than with alsa. -- mike c

So I'm checking out python-sympy for some calculations in the Robotics subject I teach and realized that a bug was recently fixed in git which is crucial to what I hope to use it for. python-sympy-git in the AUR and that's settled. Then I got to wondering, I only really want to use the -git version till the next release, but since python-sympy is no longer installed (conflicts) I wouldn't automatically get it unless I check every once in a while if version is > 0.7.2. I figured installing a blank package with nothing in package() named python-sympy and with version 0.7.2 would allow me to get notified when python-sympy-0.7.3 or later gets in the repos. Is this a good way of doing it, or are there better ways?

[arch-general] RFC: Catalyst and Hybrid Graphics

Hello, I have been playing with Catalyst on ArchLinux in order to get my Hybrid Graphics working. Catalyst supports PowerXpress 4.0+ in Linux, so muxless graphics can work. It took me some time to get it to work, I had to workaround many stuff. Here follows: First thing that I was bothered with is that /usr/lib/fglrx/switchlib{GL,glx} were missing. Their purpose is to switch /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 and /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so to either AMD (Catalyst) or Intel (Mesa and Xorg) libraries. Each one is called with "intel" or "amd" as an argument, and both must exit sucessfully with "echo amd" or "echo intel" after getting the job done. I've managed to "fool" Catalyst by creating dummy files. #!/bin/bash echo amd exit 0 By default, aticonfig --initial will use AMD (Discrete) GPU, so the current installation seems to be okay. I'll continue with other issues that can arise later in this mail. Next major problem is that fglrx will load intel driver, which, unfortunately can't be installed by default since it depends on intel-dri, which depends on libgl which is in conflict with catalyst-utils package (doh). I had to rebuild it without intel-dri dependency to get this working. On why intel driver is necesary, I can answer the following: Most newer hybrid graphics are muxless, they do not have hardware multiplexer and you can't select on which GPU you want to output. Instead, Discrete GPU is just wired to Integrated one and is meant only for Processing while it is on Integrated GPU to display anything passed from the Discrete GPU. For more information on this term, you may want to look at DRI PRIME and DMA BUF (An open source solution for this mess). So in fact, intel driver is needed since it is used for 2D and stuff, where fglrx only does the encoding/decoding stuff. How to fix it? Well, I couldn't think of any nice way to fix this. Debian has their alternatives system so they can have multiple libGL installed and set with alternatives. Gentoo does the same with their eselect stuff or whatever it's called. Since aticonfig --px-dgpu tells xorg.conf to use Discrete (AMD) GPU, it also runs /usr/lib/fglrx/switchlib{GL,glx} with "amd" as parameter in order to "make" /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 and /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so point to AMD provided libraries. aticonfig --px-igpu would switch to Mesa libGL.so.1 and Xorg Server libglx.so which are, you know, not present when catalyst-utils are installed. (Xserver libglx.so is present, but it's useless without Mesa's libGL.so.1). On how to solve this I can only think of making another package (part of Mesa source package) called something like intel-dri-hybrid (which depends on catalyst-utils and can only be used with it) that installs Intel DRI drivers and libGL.so.1 into some nonstandard place or just renamed to something else like libGL-intel.so.1. Also, it would be necesary to make /usr/lib/fglrx/switchlib{GL,glx} to correctly switch (symlinks should do it, but carefully) between AMD and Open Source libGL and libglx. I haven't done this yet but some may want to use this - not everyone wants to use Discrete GPU always - especially when on battery. I can say that power consumption on my laptop has dropped even though I always disabled Discrete GPU via vgaswitcheroo (radeon driver). Any comments and suggestions are welcome. I can try to implement something if necesary, it's just the question if my suggestions are good enough and will be accepted. I appologize for any gramatical mistakes.

[arch-general] Troubleshooting random crash

Hello all, I'm having an issue on my work machine where for the past week, each day when I come in the computer freezes. I'm using KDE 4.9.5 along with 3.7.5-1-ARCH. I believe this started happening after a recent update but I can't know for sure and I can't really reproduce it...it's happening at seemingly random times, however the pattern I see developing is after my PC has been running all day, I'll come in the next morning open Thunderbird and the system just freezes. I can't ctrl+alt+F[1-12] or do anything. Using another system, I'm able to telnet to port 22 on the "frozen" box (I run ssh on this box) but cannot get connected via ssh. My question is, how do I go about troubleshooting this issue? I know there are so many factors involved that it can really be anything, but I'd think if it were an X11/KDE/Thunderbird issue, I'd at least be able to switch to a console and/or SSH to the box. I also don't know if it's in fact a kernel crash because I can telnet to ports on the box. I AM running root BtrFS which I think may be the culprit. I know I know, not production ready, etc. but I'm not actually using this box as a production server, just as my main work desktop so I figured I'd be fine. Also, again, I didn't start having issues until maybe 2 weeks ago -- and I've had this box running since September '12. Luckily I haven't had any filesystem corruption AFAIK, but I'm thinking it's only a matter of time. Any tips on things I could set up to try to capture some sort of output or perhaps a kernel dump (if it's the kernel crashing)? I'm just at a loss here, and I'm not accustom to needing to reboot my Linux PC so ofter (though I have to troubleshoot a certain other OS daily, and that's usually the resolution :p ). -- Andre Goree andre(a)drenet.info

Hello all, I'm experiencing an odd problem with a new system installed yesterday. Video HW is NV44 [GeForce 6200 LE], driver nouveau, login xdm-archlinux, windom manager is Windowmaker (but the same problem occurs with e.g. FVWM). Every _second_ login the following happens: * Input typed into xterm is displayed as spaces. All the rest (including completion and history) gets printed normally. * The top pixel rows of some lines in xterm are not displayed. * Apps displaying pixmaps show random garbage instead. Hi, It's time again for the yearly cleanup of the [community] repository. Somehow, time passed, and it's now too late for a "Christmas Cleanup" like last year. Instead I'm announcing a Winter Cleanup, which I think is a better name as well. The wonderful developers of Arch Web have added a report of "Uneeded Orphans" since last time, which should make this cleanup considerably easier. (Thanks Dan McGee: https://projects.archlinux.org/archweb.git/commit/?id=5379348c9337a4abe27e8…) Another positive development is that all the ibus-packages that nobody seemed to want to adopt, are no longer orphans. Thanks goes out to Felix Yan, one of our latest TUs, for that. This is recommended by upstream [1]. The size cost is minimal, 996K. For updates, I added an array called core_modules. During an update, we only copy modules that already exist in /boot/syslinux. However, if any core_module does not exist in /boot/syslinux it will be copied/symlinked. With these modifications, when a user upgrades from 4.06 -> 5.00, ldlinux.c32 will be copied/symlinked to /boot/syslinux as it is core_module. Other modules such as libutil_com.c32 and libcom32.c32 will not be copied/linked. On boot, if a menu is being used, the menu will fail to load (missing depends: libutil_com.c32, etc...). However, the user will be given a syslinux shell they can boot by entering a label that corresponds to a defined label in syslinux.cfg. A post_install message or a news item suggesting users to copy / symlink all modules to /boot/syslinux would be ideal. Users who miss this message, will still be able to boot, but instead of the menu loading, they will be dropped to a syslinux shell (as explained above). cp /usr/lib/syslinux/*.c32 /boot/syslinux (/ and /boot on seperate fs) or ln -s /usr/lib/syslinux/*.c32 /boot/syslinux (/ and /boot on same fs) In my opinion, we shouldn't add new modules during an update to /boot/syslinux unless, without the module, the system becomes unbootable. According to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/UEFI_Bootloaders#Sync_EFISTUB_Kernel_i… The recent (and current) version of refind-efi auto-detects efi kernels in /boot and that wiki article says that it is no longer necessary to sync files from /boot/ to /boot/efi/EFI/arch/ Does that mean when first installing arch in a uefi system then it is also no longer necessary to copy the vmlinuz and initramfs files to the EFI /arch/ directory at all? Or is it necessary only once as indicated in the wiki? i.e. is the wiki fully up to date? Thanks. -- mike c

Hi, I used to rely on xautolock + community/vlock for locking my X session, core/kbd however removed community/vlock in favor of its own vlock which lack the functionality I need. Besides -a -a,--all Lock all console sessions and disable VC switching. not working This tty (pts/5) is not a virtual console. The entire console display cannot be locked. I also used -n and -s -n,--new Switch to a new virtual console before locking all console sessions. -s,--disable-sysrq Disable the SysRq mechanism while consoles are locked. This option only works if the -a,--all option given. that the new vlock is lacking. Not wanting to revert to slock I reworked community/vlock into my system in a foul manner I'm not going to mention here. I've also read https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/33134 http://www.spinics.net/lists/util-linux-ng/msg07153.html https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=156308 http://forums.fedoraforum.org/archive/index.php/t-203953.html :D I'm not sure what my question should be, really, but I would like to be able to use the 2.2.3 functionality (-ans) without having an ugly hacky setup. Hi You know the moment where you would turn back the time some seconds only? Well here we are... I got a perfectly running arch on ssd (6 partitions) and an internal hdd (1partition) with a backup usb disk (1partition) connected at a very genious moment! Having done a SD-multiboot setup with several distros I just wanted to test that the last distro added (DBAN Dariks Boot and nume) boots fine. Only little thing to mention was that --autonuke setting at boot loader. Don't ask me what was riding me, maybe tiredness, stupidness, something evil or altogether! As fast as I swiched the system off it erased at least some sectors on each and every disk! Well, DBAN worked. But how can I get back to something running? At least I would like the backup disk running but I am not sure what is the correct way. I don't have another backup and uploading to Amazon S3 was not yet finished, so disaster recovery would have worked only later.... How I hate Murphy today! For the procedure: Testdisk showed me at least 6 possible partitioning (having had one on this disk!) schemes and just creating the partition with fdisk and not touching the filesystem wouldn't give me my TOC back, no? Using gparted would recreate the filesystem resulting in overwritten data? Do I need to use an ext-restoring rool or what is best to try? First copying the data off to a second external disk with "dd"? And then? I would really appreciate some experienced users feedback as some of the missing data means a lot to me although knowing that there are more important things lime health etc. Thanks in advance! emak

[arch-general] broken system after today upgrade

Dear list, testing repo is enabled on my box. Today upgrade of glibc, filesystem and Linux failed and leaves me with an unbootable machine. I boot with Archiso, then mount /, /boot and /user on /mnt/. From this directory, I then #pacman -Syu linux glibc filesystem with no success. Get excv unfound. I downgraded these 3 packages, then try again. It went with no errors. Booting my box leaves me to a Kernel panic with init not found. My grub config is clean and don't know why I should pass any extra kernel parameter. How can I deal with this issue? Thank you for help as my box is my working tool

All, I rebooted my computer today to test some boot flags only to be greeted with an unbootable machine. Here is a transcript of the boot messages: /init: line 9: systemd-timestamp: not found :: running early hook [udev] /init: line 21: udevd: not found :: running hook [udev] :: Triggering uevents... /init: line 21: udevadm: not found /init: line 21: udevadm: not found /init: line 21: udevadm: not found Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/sda2... ERROR: device '/dev/sda2' not found. Skipping fsck. ERROR: Unable to find root device '/dev/sda2'. And then I am dropped to a root shell. Attached is my mkinitcpio.conf[1]. This only happens when using an initramfs generated with systemd-git. I built this this image[1] using mkinitcpio 0.12.0.15.g1fb6722. I am also using linux-mainline, but that does not seem to have any effect when downgrading or using a different kernel. If I downgrade systemd to 197, however, rebuild the image and reboot, it goes smoothly. Shutting down my computer cleanly is also an impossibility, as `systemctl poweroff` just hangs with no messages printed. This does not happen with 197. Also attached are the pacman -Ql outputs of my systemd-git[3] and [core]s systemd[4], as well as the mkinitcpio -v output[5]. I would be in favour of having a proper modern vim implementation in core no matter what its name would be. The only downside is that vim would need signoffs. Vi is the standard UNIX text-editor. Many admins rely on the fact that vi is available everywhere. It really should be in core. Also, I know you might be referring to "plain vi", which is a completely different beast to Vim, but the latter (which provides "vi" too) has a *huge* userbase. Calling it crap is just bizarre... I'm running the LTS kernel, and VirtualBox has been working fine under it until recently. However sometime in the last few days (after a recent upgrade, I'm guessing), I can no longer launch VM's. Apparently vboxnetflt is never getting loaded. And when I try to load it manually, I get the following error: [darose@daroselin ~]$ sudo modprobe vboxnetflt modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'vboxnetflt': Invalid argument Anyone know what the problem might be? I didn't see any bug reports about this. Does the virtualbox-host-modules-lts need to be upgraded perhaps? Thanks, DR

I had actually forgotten that I had a separate ext4 boot partition. I've ran fsck on it as well as btrfsck on my mirrored root, and my raid10 array. All return fine. During boot, between some of the xfermode errors, I can see the message where it is looking for btrfs file systems, and then a repair console which says that the root filesystem can't be found which doesn't respond for some reason. I'll try to find another keyboard to see if it will make a difference. I did another install of of the old 3.6 kernel, and noticed that it threw an error about not being able to find the root filesystem at that point also. Investigating a little further, I found I could reliably reproduce the freeze by running '$ glxinfo' (occasionally had to repeat it a few times). Downgrading to linux-3.6.11-1 resolved the problem. I'm not reporting this as a bug yet, since linux-3.7.3-1 is marked as out-of-date (linux-3.7.4-1 is in [testing]), this is just a heads-up for other people experiencing the same issue. [arch-general] Request help with wired network config after initial install and reboot

I did a base install last night on a machine with only a wired connection - using the arch iso from 2013-01-04 - the install seemed to go fine and I had a network connection using dhcp during the install and once chrooted into /mnt everything seemed fine. At that stage I set up a wired "static ip" connection (following the beginners guide) using ifplugd - but the service does not start from within the chroot during the install - but when I rebooted at the completion of the install I have no network connection and I cannot see any network device (was eth0 during the install) - is it possible this may be due to the systemd-197 package that was installed with the interface naming changed? It seems that the ifconfig command is not available once rebooted into the install and I don't know how to proceed. Can anyone give my any advice on how to get the network up on the newly installed system? I could not find anyone who had the same problem in the forums or searching on the net. i've got a strange problem: when zooming images in the GIMP (installed from [extra]), viewing them larger than the size they are being automatically zoomed to by default, they break up into unconnected, rectangular tiles. moving (panning) them around with the mouse so that they partially leave the screen brings those parts back to be displayed properly. means i have to 'swivel' the image across all borders to get it to display properly. in addition, applying scissors or path tool leaves artefacts on the image that can be removed the same way. i've noticed this first with the development version of GIMP (2.9, compiled from GIT) and thought those were the new GIMP's growing pains -- but then i noticed the same happening with the stable version (2.8). i've tried switching to an earlier version of xf86-video-ati and to an earlier kernel, but neither rectifies the problem. i also tried different options in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ 20-radeon.conf, whith the same result, i.e., none. i've installed (stable) GIMP in (stable) openSUSE i'm keeping in a VirtualBox, and the problem doesn't happen there. i didn't find anything useful via google or the GIMP dev/users lists and am quite puzzled. wondering if one of you guys has an idea where to look? seems to have something to do with the image being refreshed, or not being refreshed, but which part of the system is at fault baffles me. i'm using arch +testing, and here are my system's details: System: Host: laptop Kernel: 3.7.3-1-ARCH x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: KDE 4.9.98 Distro: Arch Linux Machine: Mobo: ASUSTeK model: K53SK version: 1.0 serial: BSN12345678901234567 Bios: American Megatrends version: K53SK.203 date: 10/11/2011 CPU: Quad core Intel Core i7-2670QM CPU (HT-MCP) clocked at 800.00 MHz Graphics: Card-1: Intel 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller Card-2: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Whistler LE [AMD Radeon HD 6625M Graphics] X.org: 1.13.1 drivers: ati,radeon,intel tty size: 114x37 -- phani.

HI all i've just completed a fresh install of arch on a new pendrive I just bought. The install went smoothly, until I try to access the internet. I setup net-auto-wireless with my home wireless network, and netcfg returns with this error. No such interface: wlan0. Checking dmesg with "dmesg | grep -i wlan0" yields the following. Systemd-udevd: renaming network interface wlan0 to wlo2 This has never happened to me before, so I tried my ethernet port. That failed too, no internet connection. Dmesg again reveals: systemd-udevd: renaming network interface eth0 to enps0." This usb drive is fully updated as of 12:15 a.m jan 21, 2013, stable, no testing repos enabled, multilib enabled. I'm using kernel v3.6.11. I've run into this situation before and I've managed to resolve it by installing nss-myhostname. However, that was when I tried to install from my main hdd, which has testing repos enabled to my usb drive without enabling testing repos. That caused conflicts with a newer kernel, v3.7.2 and systemd 197-4, which conflicted with nss-myhostname. I tried to do the same today, only to find out that systemd seems to contain nss-myhostname, because pacman -S nss-myhostname tries to pull in systemd itself. I'm completely stumped. Googling around doesn't seem to turn up any results, My search term was, udev renames wlan0 to wlo2. Any help would really be appreciated. I'm trying to create a usb drive to use as a diagnostic distro for my fiance's windows computer, virus scanning, password recovery, etc. Thanks Kendell clark

Hello Archlinux team, the SeaMonkey package is outdated. Many critical issues have been fixed in the current version: http://www.mozilla.org/security/known-vulnerabilities/seamonkey.html So in my opinion a fixed package is required as soon as possible. As SeaMonkey contains a browser component and there may be people who use this to surf the internet, in my opinion new versions should be packaged with the same priority as Firefox packages. Dear list, here is my mkinitcpio hook list. HOOKS="base udev autodetect block lvm2 filesystems fsck usr usbinput shutdown modconf" When # mkinitcpio, I get this error: -> Running build hook: [fsck] ==> ERROR: file not found: `fsck.btrfs' ==> WARNING: No fsck helpers found. fsck will not be run on boot. The initramfs-linux.img is still correct, but I was wondering why this error. When reading the /usr/lib/initcpio/install/fsck script, it seems to me fsck will add the filesystem name and run /usr/bin/fsck.filesystemame.This will of course translate to fsck.btrfs, which does not exist. /usr/bin/btrfsck is the correct binary. According to /usr/lib/initcpio/install/btrfs script, the btrfs hook is not needed when using udev. How can I solve this issue? Shall I add the btrfs hook? Thank you for advices. Regards.

during today's update from calibre 0.9.14-1 -> 0.9.15-1, pacman complained that all packages under /usr/lib/calibre/calibre were already existing in the filesystem, and therefore the update couldn't be performed. for some reason "pacman -Qo" claimed that all these files didn't belong to any package. only after moving them from that location somewhere else could the new version of calibre be installed. looks to me as if this is some packaging error. don't know enough about arch packaging though to say what exactly went wrong... -- phani.

Hi, I just installed linux 3.7.2 from [testing] on an AMD system and noticed that powernow-k8 is not loaded. As a result, the CPU is stuck at the maximum frequency because ondemand governor is inactive. Hi everybody! I just installed Arch on a MacbookPro 8,2 in EFI mode (booting directly from Grub 2). My system boots, but when I try to start X I get "(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration". I've tried changing the modeset values for i915 and radeon (mentioned on this wiki page: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MacBook_Pro_8,1_/_8,2_/_8,3_(2011_Macb…) but nothing seems to work. My modules line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf is: MODULES="ahci libahci crc32c-intel intel_agp i915" Does anybody know what I'm missing? Thanks! - Bryan

hi all, Since latest update of gnome 3.4, I can't login through gdm because, then, I have no single glyph or font displayed on my desktop in menu or application (but not the qt ones) So, I found the work around to switch to tty2 and login and run startx and all is fine in my desktop. The fonts are back. No idea what this bug is about ! Anyway, my problem is: When I shutdown the PC from gnome desktop, I end up on tty2 console, and nothing is happening there i.e. no shutdown. I have to switch back manually to tty1 so that the shutdown procedure begins or continues. Any idea why systemd fails like that ? or gnome ?

Hi, I've recently installed Arch on a friend's machine, which happens to be a MacBook Pro. After some initial problems with the EFI setup, it now works basically great. However there is a strange "problem" during the boot process. The system is fully encrypted (based on the layout recommended in the Wiki), so during the boot process you'll get asked for the passphrase. However the correct passphrase isn't recognized the first time, but it has to be entered a second time. The passphrase is pretty easy for now, just to make sure mistyping is not a problem. We tested this several times, and it consequently refuses to accept the passphrase given at the first attempt. I've had to include the "usbinput" hook into the initramfs as the keyboard is attached via USB. However I can't think that this is a problem, as I've used the "usbinput" hook on other machines without a problem. Has anyone experienced something like this already? What might be the problem here? How can I debug this? I thought of rewriting the "encrypt" hook to output the entered passphrase, but before fiddling around with it, maybe there is something obvious I've missed here? If anyone can help or suggest links to solve the following problem I would appreciate it. I have a new system built with an Intel DQ77KB motherboard with a Crucial mSATA M4 SSD, and a Crucial SATA M4 SSD drive. I want to install arch on this system and indeed preparing a usbkey with the archiso install media using dd to write the usbkey boots just fine. Also the latest PartedMagic iso written to a usbkey also boots fine so that I can format the SSD drives (both of them). Looking at the system profile I can see all the peripherals, including all the RAM and both SSD drives. However before starting the arch install I want to update the firmware on the SSD drives. This is available from the Crucial website either as a Windows 7/8 .exe (which I can't use) or a "manual" firmware update file which is an iso (containing memdisk from syslinux, and a floppy image file boot2880.img) Running the "file" command on the boot2880.img file after loop mounting it gives: # file /mnt/iso/boot/isolinux/boot2880.img /mnt/iso/boot/isolinux/boot2880.img: x86 boot sector, FREE-DOS Beta 0.9 Bootloader KERNEL.SYS, code offset 0x3c, OEM-ID "FreeDOS ", sectors/cluster 2, root entries 240, sectors 5760 (volumes <=32 MB) , sectors/FAT 9, serial number 0x2b6112fe, label: "BOOTABLE ", FAT (12 bit) Writing the iso to a usbkey won't boot - the screen goes blank and nothing happens when I write the iso to a usbkey with a FAT32 key with the boot flag. I have tried isolinux and that does not seem to work. I have tried a bootable grub2 usbkey and that does not work - all are prepared from a working arch linux laptop. I have following numerous "recipes" for making the usbkey from various sources on the web and none seem to work at all! The odd thing is that for syslinux I can't even get a menu item on the screen when booting the key - nor for grub 2. I have used two different makes of usbkey - both 4GB....same result - and both keys will boot fine with the archiso or PartedMagic. I don't know if I am doing something fundamentally stupid but this is driving me nuts! I have used gparted, as well as fdisk, as well as trying parted to reformat the usbkeys. Nothing I do seems to work! There must be a good step-by-step guide somewhere on how to get a usbkey with sysylinux to boot the firmware updater - which seems to have a floppy image file (boot2880.img) and uses memdisk to boot it - though the version on the iso file is about two year old whereas arch current memdisk in syslinux is up to date. If anyone can help advise on how to make a bootable usbkey to execute this, I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance. -- mike c

When i use truecrypt --mount /PATH/OF/FILE /home/usr/Desktop all of my folders vanish. I then tried to unmount using truecrypt -d /PATH/OF/FILE and nothing, but after reboot the folders are back on Desktop. Is there any way to be able to mount on Desktop but not lose my folders?

I want my media pc to automatically mount several samba shares when they're accessed. In addition it also needs to wake-up the other machine if it is currently suspended via WOL. >From a forum post on xbmc.org (1) I know this can be done using autofs, but I'd like to see if this can be using systemd alone. I know systemd can handle the automounting, but what about the WOL? Is it as simple as merely providing a dependency to the specific automount service file to first do the WOL? A oneshot unit? Hey guys, I set the sensitivity of my Thinkpad X230i laptop trackpoint with an udev rule setting the values in sysfs fitting for me. One drawback of this solution is that this rule I wrote is not incorporated inside of the intird, so when I start up, the udev of initrd already recognized the trackpoint and my rule in the booted-up system is ignored. My workaround for this is to manually do "udevadm trigger", which bugs the hell out of me. How can I tell mkinitcpio to include a custom udev rule? Do I need to write a hook for that? [arch-general] kernel 3.7.2 - fails to boot - please help

Using testing repos - was fully updated and all working fine. Then picked up the latest 3.7.2-1 kernel along with kdebase 4.9.5-2/ Rebooting after this latest update fails - it cannot find the root device and drops to "recovery shell". ls /dev/sdb1 (the usual root device) is def missing at that point. The recovery option does not boot either. What I tried: I booted 2013.01.04 arch install media - did a chroot as per the wiki - and attempted to roll back the kernel using pacman on the 3.7.1 package I get several errors: warning could not get filesystem information for things like: /run/archiso/bootmnt /sys/fs/cgroup/systemd /run is empty - and /sys/fs/cgroup is empty As per the chroot wiki /sys is mounted from the install via mount -t sysfs sys sys/ pacman continues beyond these warnings but fails with: ==> building image from preset: 'default' -> -k /boot/vmlinux-linux -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/initramfs-linux.img ERROR: invalid kernel specified: '/boot/vmlinux-linux' same error from ;fallback'. I am hoping I can install 3.7.1 kernel and boot again - instead of a new install. If anyone can offer some guidance I'd be appreciative ... thank you gene

Hi, I've just upgraded both "firefox" and "firefox-i18n-de" to 18.0-1. However after this upgrade all (context) menus are English. This wasn't the case for the last couple of upgrades of Firefox, so I'm wondering whether I'm alone with that observation, or whether there went something wrong with the packaging? I couldn't find a bug report on this, so before reporting anything, I would like to make sure that I'm not the only one affected by this. I've looked at the recent changes to the i18n package(s), see [1], and it seems that it was reworked based on the Thunderbird packages. However Thunderbird is still German, even after the upgrade. I am building a machine which has an EFI capable boot on the motherboard together with an mSATA drive for the root and boot partitions and an SSD for the /opt and swap partitions, and just a single arch x86_64 install when it is built - no dual booting to other OSes. I have been looking up information about UEFI with GPT partitioning and have read about various problems that people have had with such systems. So at this stage I am unsure whether to stick with what I know (BIOS/MBR and GRUB2 with full systemd) or whether to plunge into the unknown (for me!) and try EFI/GPT! (with rEFInd) Does anyone have experience with such a UEFI system on this list? Apart from the info on the arch wiki and the install wiki info (which I have been reading), are systems like this reliable once installed? Does the routine pacman update process for kernels lead to issues requiring manual intervention with EFI/GPT or it is as generally reliable as BIOS/MBR? I would be interested to hear from anyone with this kind of experience running arch - if it is useful the motherboard I am using is an Intel DQ77KB (which I intend to update with the latest BIOS firmware) and with the Intel i3-3220T CPU. [arch-general] Optimising ssd setup?

As part of my planning for setting up a home build computer which will use two ssd drives - one a Crucial M4 mSATA drive (for root and boot partitions) and a second larger Crucial M4 SATA III drive for the rest, I have been reading up about partitioning and optimising such drives - It seems that it is important to partition with proper alignment to MiB boundaries for partitions but I am unclear if this happens automatically or not when setting up GPT partitions with gparted? ( I usually partition using a liveusb running PartedMagic and then run gparted before installing arch) Also I have been seeing various bits of advice about ensuring that excessive writes are avoided by using a non-default IO scheduler - with "deadline" being the better option for SSDs than the default CFQ scheduler - and it would seem that adding the parameter to the kernel line for boot once a system is set up is perhaps a good way forward? How does that work if UEFI booting? In addition it is suggested that for a machine with a reasonable RAM (in my case 8GiB) then reducing the "swappiness" parameter to 1 via systemctl, or altering the relevant parameter under /proc/sys is the way to do it, even if there is a swap partition on one of the SSDs. I have also seen it suggested that TRIM support is important either mounting with the "discard" option or running fstrim manually via a cron job out of hours to avoid delays during writes whilst the system is in use. Finally I have seen suggested that the "noatime" flag be used for mounting SSD drives. Can anyone on this list who has set up a recent SSD drive and has experience of SSD wear issues, and levelling issues, offer any advice on whether some or all of the above are important when using SSD drives in an arch linux machine or whether partitioning and installing essentially with defaults is going to lead to SSD problems, or not? I've just changed my desktop back to Gnome3. I suspect that notifications are somewhat broken on my system, but I can't find any information to confirm it. When I run 'notify-send "Test notifications"' the following happens: 1. a small 'i' in a blue circle appears at the bottom of the screen - it disappears when I click on it, or after a short while 2. an 'i' in a blue circle also appears in the bottom bar - left clicking on the icon brings up a smaller 'i' icon, the larger icon remains - right clicking the icon brings up a menu offering 'open' and 'remove', they both behave exactly the same: they remove the notification icon What I find surprising here is that 1. I never get to see the text, no matter what I do 2. Hello, today I did a fresh install using the december release of the install media. Everything done 'to the book' (the install guide wiki page). Bootloader is syslinux. When booting the freshly installed system, I get the syslinux menu, select Archlinux or fallback, things seem to be normal for a few seconds then everything stops. After some time I get a message that /dev/sda3 (which is the / partition) can't be found and I'm dropped into an emergency shell. No LVM or RAID, just a single SATA disk with sda1 = /boot (100M, ext2) sda2 = swap (2G) sda3 = / (~250G, ext4) Partioning done with cfdisk. The mkinitcpio.conf used is the default one, which seems to have all required hooks. Everything in /boot/syslinux looks ok. Any hints ?? Hello list, among various tasks, I also run "sysstat" for monitoring my server's load. The way it runs by default is via the hourly cron, as a job that lasts exactly one hour. Sometimes I need to stop crond (systemctl stop dcron) to perform some short maintainance, and restart it a minute later that I'm done. Previously the "sadc" monitoring process of sysstat wasn't being killed, since it double forked and stayed up as a daemon. Unfortunately now systemd kills the whole cgroup, and in this manner it's possible to lose up to one hour of accounting logs. Any ideas on how to instruct systemd to not kill it when terminating crond? Thanks in advance, Dimitris

Hello all, I've been having problems with ALSA recently. Whenever I reboot my computer or wake it up from sleep, ALSA sets the volume of the speakers (and only the speakers) to zero. The headphones and master volume remain normal, but no sound will come from the speakers until I manually go into alsamixer and turn up the speaker's individual volume. I have an Intel integrated audio card, the 82801H HD Audio Controller. This only started recently and I am at a loss as to what is going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, J. Merry Christmas to all Archer's out there ! :) Sadly enough I recognized a problem with my Logitech bluetooth adapter on Christmas Eve. This adapter connects my laptop with my stereo system so I can use the speakers of the stereo system wireless. This has worked for several months. But with the last update of pulseaudio (GNOME as DE) this connection broke permanently and I realized it the first time just when I wanted to play some Christmas music. :( :) The adapter indicates that a connection has been established, I also see the bluetooth adapter in the mixer but when I start to play some music again the internal laptop speaker are used for output. This is not related to the question if I started the music player before or after pairing with the adapter. A look in /var/log/messages.log for useful messages leads me to this line: moria pulseaudio[1480]: [pulseaudio] module-bluetooth-device.c: Profile has no transport Is this caused by this bug [1] - or not, because the description relates to pa 2.99.2, and I have 3.0.2 installed ? Every time i connect to a wireless network (no matter how strong the signal is), after 1-2 minutes, the connection is dropped and i have to manually start it again. This never happens with the ethernet connection. I'm currently testing this with a WEP connection using wifi-menu to connect to an already created profile (netcfg version 3). I've tried catalyst proprietary but I found out that my gpu isn't supported since long time ago. so I try to setup with opensource drivers. also if i don't "nomodeset" on boot, the pc is hungs on boot. when i startx with the radeon mod loaded I get: Screen 0 deleted because of no matching config section. and then no screens found

First of all, I'm sorry if the general discussion list isn't for questions like this. I wasn't sure how to figure out what's appropriate. Per https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=154496, I've had a real ordeal trying to get video working on Arch on a repurposed late 2010 Macbook Air. I've never had issues like this with video / X in Arch before. I'm wondering if anyone can give me a push in the right direction to at least diagnose this problem. It's getting pretty hard to work without a browser! $ lspci | grep VGA 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation MCP89 [GeForce 320M] (rev a2) Here's what I've tried in EFI mode: - all the proprietary drivers listed on the nvidia page on the Arch wiki; each of them either wouldn't load X or showed a blank screen; ctrl-alt-fN didn't work and I had to do a hard reboot - standard nouveau setup - X sort of starts up but there are weird artifacts, mouse doesn't work, and it freezes up pretty quickly. - nouveau with mesa-git - as above - nouveau with mesa-full - above I've also tried BIOS compatibility mode, but I wasn't able to get my drives to mount. At any rate, it was very slow to boot, so I really want to stick with the EFI + GRUB2 setup. My Xorg.0.log when loading the proprietary driver, which just shows a black screen: http://pastie.org/5556341 My Xorg.0.log when loading nouveau, which has strange artifacts, incomplete rendering of windows, and soon locks up: http://codepad.org/QFdP9Fax I have no .xinitrc file. Hi, so far I was using "dropbear_initrd_encrypt" (see [1]) to unlock a cryptdevice remotely via SSH, which worked reasonably well. However since the latest release of mkinitcpio it doesn't work anymore. I could fix the issues in the meantime, however it got me into thinking that this could be done even better. The main problem I have with "dropbear_initrd_encrypt" is that it sort of mixes the "dropbear" and "encryptssh" hooks. The dropbear daemon for instance is started in the "dropbear" hook, but killed after successfully unlocking the cryptdevice in the "encryptssh" hook. Furthermore the "encryptssh" hook is basically a copy of the "encrypt" hook with some changes. Now my idea so far was the following: Start a screen session early (using "run_earlyhook"). Start dropbear whenever SSH access is needed, e.g. right before the "encrypt" hook itself using a separate "dropbear" hook ("run_hook" should be fine). Now the SSH session should be attached to the screen session, so the input/output will be "shared". After unlocking (run_cleanuphook) kill the screen session. I've spent some time on this, but couldn't get it working so far. Now before spending even more time on it, I would like to know from you what you think about it and whether or not this can be done. Are there any obvious issues I'm haven't thought of yet? Unfortunately I'm not too familiar with screen and every attempt I tried so far will bring up some form of an interactive screen session with the welcome screen being shown. This will bring the boot process to a "halt", where I have to exit the screen session to move on. I guess in the first step I would just like to have all output from the boot process within the initramfs shown in a screen session. Has anyone of you some advice(s) for me? Using screen has the advantage that the whole output during boot will be accessible (scrollable) as screen would buffer all of it. Dear list, currently following the Sun certified web component developer course, I want to set up a http web server @ home to practice. I plan to virtualize a Arch server on my Arch box. I know we can talk about pro/con for hours, but I am interested in knowing your advices about the following apps: -http server : Apache or Nginx (curious to test the later) -container for my servlets : Tomcat ? -secure ftp server : ??? maybe a mail server: ??? I guess ssh will be the best way to talk to the server. Maybe other stuffs I forgot? What is the most common and simple way to secure the whole stuff without loosing too much responsiveness? [arch-general] Mounting /var early in systemd

Hello all, I'm migrating a diskless cluster from initscripts to systemd. The problem I have is that the nodes each need to mount their own separate /var (identified by hostname) from the NFS server when they boot. With initscripts, I used a sysinit_end hook to do the job, which worked pretty well. However, with systemd I've really hit a brick wall. I can't get the unit to start early enough, because systemd creates so many sockets (in /var) so early, and there's no target that is ordered before the socket units are started. This means that the early sockets get masked when the "real" /var is mounted, and things break. I think the only solution with systemd is to explicitly specify each socket in "Before=" for my unit, which is likely to break if anything changes in future. It might also be possible to create a generator that automates this, but that's still pretty ugly. Right now, I'm thinking the only sensible solution is to forget doing it with systemd and push the mounting of /var up into initcpio, but that's admitting defeat. Any ideas? Paul

I have the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and I set up a chroot environment with Arch. I run Xorg server successfully, the S-Pen (digital pen) works out of the box with evdev driver, however I can't get the touchscreen to work. It's on /dev/input/event1 and I've tried: mtrack, multitouch, synaptics and it just don't work. no errors at all. I tried evdev and when I touch the screen it throws this [1] and dies. HI, I am new to Arch Linux but not to Linux as a whole. I'd be grateful for any advice on how to store the password as follows:- I am running an up to date Arch Linux system and have set up XFCE 4.1. As per the wiki I have installed gvfs-smb. I can browse my network from Thunar 1.6.1 and can access windows shares perfectly. When prompted I enter my username, workgroup and password and also click the radio button to 'remember forever' the password. The session is fine and I can copy files back and forward perfectly. However, after a reboot or unmounting the share, I am prompted to re-enter the Domain/Workgroup and also the password. Can anyone point me to how I can get the system to memorise these fields? I have gnome keyring installed, so I'm guessing it could be permissions or something else I haven't thought of. Grateful for any advice. A.

Having read the available postings in arch-dev-public as well as those on this subject in the arch forums I am somewhat confused as to how to complete the merge for /etc/passwd /etc/shadow /etc/group and /etc/gshadow for the new entries in the .pacnew files. For example in my old /etc/passwd I have the line: dbus:x:81:81:System message bus:/:/bin/false and in the pacnew file I have: dbus:x:81:81:dbus:/:/sbin/nologin Should I put the line from the .pacnew file into the old file? Also for uidd I have in the original: uuidd:x:999:999::/:/sbin/nologin but in the pacnew file it is: uuidd:x:68:68:uuidd:/:/sbin/nologin Should I change the uid in the original file to 68 - and do the same in the corresponding entries for shadow, group and gshadow? I am an old linux user and usually I can sort things out after an upgrade but this time I am really confused. Any expert advice very much appreciated - thanks. -- mike c

I have been trying to get my laptop set up using google hangouts - chrome works fine, and I installed the google-talkplugin from AUR. Sound is coming out from the speakers just fine ((and also on the gmail test sound output) - and the webcam is fine. I can use the jack audio facility to check that I can take sound input from the microphone and play it in the speakers. However I can't seem to get the google video chat to use input sound - and trying a test hangout I get a warning that my microphone is not configured correctly! I use alsa but not pulseaudio though I read in a post on the arch forum that installing pulse made no difference for another user who had sound problems with this also. I can't find any postings or wiki advice on sorting out this particular problem. Does anyone have any experience or tested workaround to get this sound issue resolved? Thanks -- mike c

Hi, Since upgrading to 0.26 series, i have serious issues with HD TV and DVB-S mpg conversion. I'm using latest git version of 0.26 from 121209. - HDTV looses audio complete if using high profile for conversion. - DVB-S mpg's are not convertable anymore with cutlists. The mpg's are not working to convert until I remove the ac3 audio stream manually with ffmpeg. With HDTV I don't get a working cutted recording. Do others observe such issues too? Hello, for migration to a new machine (i686>x86_64, msdos>gpt,ssd,diff disk layout) I decided to do a clean install, Now I have * basic Arch up and running: pacman -S base base-devel * I'll do pacman -Qe > installed.txt (on the old one), pacman -S $((cat installed.txt)) (on new) * cp -a /home For other directories: /boot - nothing, /var - I dont care about old logs, is there anything else important? /etc ... some files (related to hw) changed, but many (wifi, iptables, cron, security, ...) stay ...is it possible to copy/merge them in a smart way? Or I have to go through all the configuration? I read this one: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Migrate_installation_to_new_hardware and basically I'd like to elaborate on how to merge the configs in /etc (or else?) Hi guys, I'm not sure who's actually in charge of oversight on the Wiki, but I'd appreciate a little input from anyone, really. I've recently been trying to ensure the accuracy of the wiki with regards to diskless booting. I run a cluster at work, and I've spent quite some time looking into getting this system functioning correctly, and I wanted to make sure the documentation was there for others to use. However, another (presumably well-intentioned) contributor has rewritten the original article, and seems very keen to cut back everything he doesn't agree with. To be honest, I'm a bit sick of trying to convince him that all information is helpful, and that not everyone that reads the article will have his usecase. In particular, he's keen to remove all references to NFSv3 (although Arch doesn't currently support booting NFSv4 without his hack), and needing a separate /var for each node (which I've explained is necessary in many, if not most, situations). I'd appreciate someone taking a look at the talk page and article history. (I'm Giddie on the wiki.) If it's decided I'm wrong, I'm fine with that. I've been learning about the close-to-open policy of NFS, which causes each file to be flushed to the server as it's closed, to ensure consistency across clients. This is a big performance hit when trying to upgrade the system, because of the numerous writes to small files. I know about the "async" export option, obviously, but there is also a "nocto" client mount option, which is supposed to disable the close-to-open mechanism for that client. As far as I can tell, this is supposed to stop the client from flushing the file when it closes it (as well as not bothering to check cache consistency when it opens). However, this seems to have no effect: the client is still flushing the file to the server on close, causing massive wait-io. Does anyone have any idea why "nocto" doesn't have the effect I was hoping it would? The "async" option works as expected, but it's more important to me that the client cache is correct, and it just bugs me. Thanks for any insight, Paul

Hello list, from a reply I got to a bug report (FS#32817, reply is private) I found out that configuration files in /etc/conf.d are deprecated and that the supported way is to replicate and customize service files. Imagine that in /usr unit file the daemon is being called as "binary -d". So I create the /etc unit file that supersedes it and calls it as "blah -d -n1". Then the package gets updated and the /usr unit file changes to "binary -d --lock=/whatever/path". As you can see I won't get the update because I've overriden the unit file, I won't get any warning either, but if the original unit file called "binary -d --lock=/whatever/path $BLAH_ARGS" there would have been no such problem. /etc/conf.d is a weaker but more elegant mechanism. I'm not saying it should replace unit files, but it should work *with* unit files, as the Arch way even if not in Freedesktop's - Fedora's recommendations. Of course anyone will still be free to copy and customize the unit file. So I'm curious to know why this mechanism was deprecated? Is it speed we gain by not including the EnvironmentFile directive in the systemd unit file? Is there some other reason I might be missing? Thanks in advance, Dimitris

Hi fellow archers, I have the following problem: On a physical (gpt) partition I have an encrypted LUKS partition which contains GPT partition table with desired final partitions (/,/home, etc..) I found a related thread: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel.device-mapper.dm-crypt/5896 Now a workaround: 1/ install kpartx and add it to BINARIES="kpartx" in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf 2/ hack /lib/initcpio/hooks/encrypt and put line kpartx -a /dev/mapper/crypto right behind every "cryptsetup .. luksOpen ..." line there. 3/ similarly, I should place "kpartx -d /dev/mapper/crypto" before "cryptsetup .. luksClose ..." is called during shutdown. I did not find these routine in hooks/encrypt, where does it happen? I'd like to know if there is any supported solution for this, or any advice from you. Thank you for help! Now that Matthew Garrett's shim is fully featured and publicly available, will Arch be implementing support for secure boot in the near future? For those who haven't seen the news yet: http://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/17542.html and http://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/20303.html give a pretty in-depth description of how to implement this distro-generic solution to secure boot. More technical details on the shim are available here: http://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/19448.html Finally, I found this OpenSUSE dev post pretty helpful in understanding how the MOKs work but it's not a necessary article to read: https://www.suse.com/blogs/uefi-secure-boot-details/ The only work necessary on the packager's part is using Peter Jones' signing tool to sign GRUB2, kernel modules, and the Arch Linux distributed kernel binaries with an Arch Linux "key" that the users would place into the shim's trusted key database. This isn't any more cumbersome than the current package signing procedures, and I think it would go a long way to be one of the first distributions to support secure-boot without having to fiddle with the UEFI. A final note: the shim currently only supports x86_64 machines and it's unknown if Garrett will ever work on a 32-bit binary. That, on top of the fact that Garrett won't be working on an ARM solution because of licensing issues, means that secure boot would simply be an Arch64 specific feature. I'd really like to hear the community's thoughts on this.

Apparently core dumps (if enabled) are stored in the systemd journal. ~ $ cat /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern |/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-coredump %p %u %g %s %t %e systemd-coredumpctl looks nice to use but I am not totally sure yet that collecting core dumps in the journal is something that I want systematically. I am looking for a way to override this. I haven't found any mention of that option in systemd documentation. Does anyone here would have an idea where I could search? Olivier

[arch-general] Concerning Secure Boot Support

For those of you who care (and you may not number very many): As it stands, Gummiboot doesn't support calling back to Matthew Garrett's shim and until this happens it won't work in secure boot mode. I'm not aware of Pierre Schmitz's reasoning for using Gummiboot as opposed to rEFInd, but if the official archiso is to boot on secure bootable machines, it'll have to either use rEFInd or Fedora 18's RC's GRUB2 (the current install media of Fedora 18 uses the latter). These are essentially the only two options until syslinux gets a stable EFI release and does the same sort of hardcoded shim support. Notice I said Fedora's, and not upstream's. Upstream GRUB2 doesn't support kernel verification against the MOK database yet so Fedora 18 is shipping a patched version. Assuming we weren't going to wait for GRUB2 to support secure boot, we could ship Fedora's bootloader instead or apply similar patchwork, but this goes against Arch philosophy and it might be easier to simply wait for upstream support. Regardless of what Arch does the decision will have to come from someone with much more authority on Arch's direction; either Pierre because he's the one rolling out the monthly iso or another developer because using non-vanilla software, even something as critical as a bootloader, isn't very Arch-like. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Not only that, but setting up a system of signing kernels, modules (out-of-tree modules are a beast that haven't been worked out yet beyond self-signing), and GRUB2 as well as rEFInd (for those who choose to use a boot manager beyond their UEFI's) with openssl generated x509 certificates using either Fedora's pesign (what MJG recommends) or Ubuntu's sbsign (a similar too that I've used and can guarantee will work) is a bit of work on its own. Lastly, the shim itself needs to be pulled into [extra] and it should come with some script like "shim-install" which would simply rename the grub-efi binary as grubx64.efi and would place the shim in /boot/efi/EFI/BOOT/x86_64/, renaming it bootx64.efi. Not so difficult at all, but it's another thing to do. That's only the technical implementation, however. Documentation would be tricky considering every manufacturer designs their UEFI implementation a little bit differently; on my system, I was stumped until I realized that regardless of the shim being signed by Microsoft's key I had to actually specify in the interface that I wanted to trust that particular .efi file. One point of the shim is so that launching Linux on a new machine isn't anymore daunting than changing the boot device order (I wouldn't worry so much about this with Arch users, however) but if the user still has to muck about in firmware that is different for everybody, one of many purposes has been swiftly defeated. Anyway, that's pretty much everything that's keeping secure boot from coming to Arch Linux for now. Well, that, and the fact that no developer actually owns a UEFI machine with secure-boot support. We'll see what happens in the future, I suppose. Thoughts and comments are requested.

Hi, I've installed Arch on a system with a two "disk" setup, where the first disk is a SSD, which I'm booting from. The second disk is an encrypted software RAID with LVM on top. Now obviously I want the second "disk" to be unlocked and mounted automatically on boot. This was no problem in the past. Now with systemd it seems to be harder. At least I get asked for the password on boot. This will unlock the device, however afterwards I have to activate the LVM and mount it manually. Is this already supported out of the box? The wiki mentions something about scripts, which may be changed, but I would like to have something more solid than self made scripts, which may break with every update in the future. Hello, My laptop is connected to a LAN with Internet connection and it gets the IP stuff (address, routing, dns) via dhcp using the default systemd scripts on boot. I also have a 3G modem (USB) which I have created the ppp scripts to connect based on the Wiki article https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/3G_and_GPRS_modems_with_pppd Both connections work fine, except after switching to modem from LAN some applications (pidgin, xchat, ect. which were running) still uses the DNS nameserver from previous connection (LAN) meaning they still trying to send DNS queries to LAN router (which is not reachable at that time). This gets fixed after that application is closed and reopened. Is this behavior normal or a bug? Thanks. P.S. I have a chroot environment on /data/workbench/mnt and I want to execute a binary which is inside the chroot environment (for example /data/workbench/mnt/bin/bash). I added the chroot library path to $LD_LIBRARY_PATH and I just did /data/workbench/mnt/bin/bash. I get a very strange error: No such file or directory. I am ABSOLUTELY sure that the file exists. When I chroot /data/workbench/mnt /bin/bash everything runs smoothly without errors. What's going on? Hi all. First of all, forgive my bad english. This is my first message to the list, forgive me if I am sending to the incorrect place. I installed arch in my laptop, a Dell vostro 3300. I am using gnome as my desktop and gdm to manage my login. Since I am blind I use orca as my screen reader in the graphical environment and speakup in text mode. I boot arch in text mode and after login in the console I issue the following command to activate gnome: sudo systemctl start gdm After I enter the above command, the login screen appears, orca begins to talk but I can not increment/decrement the volume using the media keys. Hi all, I already asked this at the forums, but as no one has an answer there I hope someone here knows a solution. On a Git cheat sheet I found that I could add nice colors to Git's output, so I edited my ~/.gitconfig by adding: [color] ui = auto [color "branch"] current = yellow reverse local = yellow remote = green [color "diff"] meta = yellow bold frag = magenta bold old = red bold new = green bold [color "status"] added = yellow changed = green untracked = cyan When performing a git log my terminal looks like this: http://ompldr.org/vZ2t1bA (escape sequences instead of colors). The same problem appears with git diff: http://ompldr.org/vZ2t1bg However, as you can see in the second screenshot, git status and git branch look correct. [arch-general] Unable to contact D-Bus session bus [testing]

Hi all, started having this problem a couple of days back with the dbus-core removal move (and corresponding filesystem update). http://pastebin.com/JKMN58jP is the result of journalctl -b A whole bunch of my applications cannot contact dbus. Firefox is one, even pulseaudio complains (though sound still works as it still runs, go figure). gnucash cannot start, etc. etc., but those are just symptoms. Oh, and ario and synapse are dumping core. I downgraded immediately due to having some things to finish off. At that time dbus was at 1.6.8-4, now its 1.6.8-5 (just updated again as today I have a bit of time to debug). Most likely cause I can see is (may be) the filesystem update. I have gshadow, shadow, group, and passwd pacnew files, but no idea how to merge them (should I swap the dbus IDs from the pacnew files in?). The original files worked after a downgrade. [arch-general] rootfs remains in ro at boot on fresh install with new December ISO

Hi, I hope it is not caused by the shortcut that I have taken to update my usb install key from november iso to december iso as described in the other thread. The first symptom that I have observed is that dhcpcd isn't able to update /etc/resolv.conf I am going to provide as much relevant info so you can tell me what to look for 1. Installed from december iso on newly created GPT ext4 partitions 2. Bootloader GRUB2 3. Did a systemctl mask tmpfs as I am mounting a disk partition on /tmp from fstab 4. Double checked 2-3 times that all my mounts are rw in fstab 5. Once logged, I have no problem doing "mount -o remount,rw /" 6. I have removed the ro kernel parameter option in grub.cfg (BTW, why is this used at all? I'm a little bit ignorant about Linux booting good practices). By doing so rootfs still remains ro. I am suspecting either systemd or the content of the initramfs. Until now, those are still black boxes to me. What should I look at to resolve my rootfs ro problem? thank you very much! Hi, All, I followed the instructions at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide#Configure_pacman and https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VirtualBox#Arch_Linux_guests to install the ArchLinux 2012.11.01 in VirtualBox (v4.2.4). My host OS is Windows XP. After installing the base system, I tried to configure X. But 'startx' failed and I found following error messages in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log: AIGLX error: vboxvideo does not export required DRI extension AIGIX: reverting to software rendering Can anyone tell me how to fix this? I noticed something strange since last dbus upgrade : my online accounts keeps on expiring. Referring to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=92530 Basically the idea was to have nvidia-utils and libgl packages which do not conflict (and don't contain the libgl.so, and, I suppose, the libglx.so symlinks). The user would then have to change symlinks manually (see [1]) to use either nvidia or nouveau after an X restart. Does anyone do it this way? Is there some possible 'gotcha' I'd face trying to do this? My reasons? To see if I can (and also because I finally got round to checking nouveau's latest updates, and it seems my card is just about fully supported except for power saving). [1a] - I'd guess making /usr/lib/libGL.so point at libGL.so.1 and changing /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 to point to either libGL.so.1.2.0 (for current libgl) or libGL.so.310.19 (for current nvidia-beta) is one thing that needs to be done [1b] - The other conflict seems to require /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so to point to either libglx.xorg (for current libgl) or libglx.so.310.19 (for current nvidia-beta) [1c] - Remove nouveau blacklist (or comment it out)

Hi :) my apologies for cross-posting this to several Linux mailing lists. I need a boot loader for Linux, that is comfortable to use for my needs, a Linux multi-boot with trillions of Linux installs, trillions ^ 2 kernels and (trillions ^ 2) * 1024 entries with different boot options, so something as GRUB 2 is unusable for my needs. Until now I was comfortable with GRUB legacy, but now I add a FreeBSD install to my machine and against the claims at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_boot_loaders GRUB legacy does not boot FreeBSD (until now). I was thinking of SYSLINUX, perhaps the most popular bootloader by Linux experts, but the Wiki says it doesn't support booting BSD. Since access to the freebsd-ufs partition by Linux is a PITA and Linux is most important for me, I wont use a FreeBSD bootloader. I need easy access to the bootloader's configuration file. Previously, my way of disabling parts of the default fontconfig configuration was to delete the related symlinks in /etc/fonts/conf.d. Now that these symlinks are owned by the fontconfig package rather than created during the post-install script [1], I'm finding that these deleted symlinks are restored whenever fontconfig is upgraded. This has the effect of silently modifying my font configuration. 1. What is the recommended way of disabling parts of the default font configuration such that it survives an upgrade of fontconfig? 2. Is simply changing any unwanted symlinks owned by fontconfig to point to /dev/null an advisable solution? 3. I want to bring to your attention that Gentoo is working on a udev fork called eudev that will - respect the Unix philosophy - be POSIX-compliant and get rid of glibcisms - have no unnecessary dependencies (systemd, kmod) - support separate /usr http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.gentoo.project/2262 with the goal to make it default for Gentoo in the future, along with OpenRC. I know from past discussions on this mailing list that not everybody in the Arch community is happy with systemd. Hello. I asked about this in the forum. But it looks like this is a better place to discuss systemd-related issues. If I login to user1 or user2 then try to play audio which requires access to /dev/snd/* , proper access to the logged in user is set by the session and everything works correctly. But, if I login to user1 then su to user2, audio wouldn't work because access permissions are assigned to the session user only (user1). Any idea how to fix this issue?

Hi all I'm not sure how, but I broke my archlinux installation on my internal hard drive. But I have the arch-installation scripts on my usb arch install, so I'm installing arch back on to my hard drive. Everything goes fine until it gets to the point where I set up the network from within the chroot. I run wifi-menu, which works fine, I select my network, family_network, enter the wpa2 key, and wait. Sometimes it will connect, and sometimes it will give me one of two error messages. Either, ip lease attempt failed, or failed to connect. In either case I select not to keep the generated profile, and try again. If it does connect, the internet works fine with a ping to google.com, but if I touch either the pacman mirrorlist file, or configure pacman in pacman.conf, and run a pacman -Syy, pacman errors out with a, failed to retrieve reponame, download library error. I'm stumped. I've varified that I have the correct wpa passphrase, and that my internet functions normally. If I exit the chroot, reboot and chroot back in it will work for a little while, then go out again with the same error. Am I missing something obvious? or is it an issue with my usb install? If I try this from the arch iso I downloaded in july, it works. but I can't easily consult the beginner's guide from the console which is why I don't use it. [arch-general] Reboot hangs after Detaching DM Devices

Hi, I installed Arch using latest ISO on ThinkPad W700. I've worked in text mode only, not installed X11 yet. Everything seems to work well so far. The only issue I noticed is when I reboot, the procedure hangs just after displaying line with the message: "Detaching DM Devices" I tried quick investigation using commands like: sytstemd-analyze sytstemd-analyze blame But, nothing obvious come up. I've seen similar problem was reported to OpenSUSE, Fedora, long time ago, but the reports are not very helpful (I use much newer kernel). Could anyone suggest what else I can do to investigate the problem and find what's a troublemaker here? p.s. I tried asking this on the forum, didn't get any real answers, so I'm hoping someone here can help. I have a script located on a Vfat-formatted flash drive. When mounted using udisks, there are no execute permissions showing on the files, and they cannot be set. After some research, it seems that udisks works with polkit to set things like permission on mounted devices. Unfortunately, so far my attempts at research haven't led me to any information on setting permissions the way I need them, or even where the settings are stored. So I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction - I want to be able to modify things like execute permissions on mounted devices when I need to. I'm not all that partial to being effectively told I can't do that - reminds me much too much of Windows. I've tried a few workarounds, with little or no success. I installed pmount and used it with the -e option to mount the device. Still no execute permissions. I tried using sh to execute the script - failed again.... I also tried adding the device to /etc/fstab. In that instance, the file showed as executable, but any attempt to execute it, even as root, got a 'permission denied' message. Argh! Paul.

Hey Archers, This is an issue I has since the day I switched to systemd, I was hoping it would get fixed eventually but seems not. I start both Apache and MySQL services on boot, and both of them display the start complete message after the login prompt. Something like this: > Starting MySQL > Starting Apache > login: [ OK ] MySQL started > [ OK ] Apache started Although this doesn't break anything it just doesn't look nice. (BTW, I'm not using any DM and getty is set NOT to clear any boot messages) I saw this already reported as a bug https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54247, but seems there is no fix yet. Hi all Yesterday I replaced fontconfig-2.8.0-2 with fontconfig-2.10.1-2, and I noticed that subpixel rendering was no longer working. I can get it working again by restoring mode=“assign" in /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-sub-pixel-rgb.conf, but I would like to understand why the new package’s mode=“append” does not work, or if there is a simpler way I could be doing this. The 2.10 config file has this giant comment and append line, which is not particularly illuminating for me:  <edit name="rgba" mode="append"><const>rgb</const></edit> It is apparently all a result of this bug, “Don’t overwrite user’s configurations in default config”: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17722 I’m not intentionally running any Gnome of KDE configuration, assuming that’s what they mean by “major desktop environments”. I have verified subpixels aren’t rendering in Scite (a text editor using GTK 2) using a magnifying glass :P on the number 7. I also noticed the fonts changed in Firefox, and “gitk” (which uses TK). I just removed ~/.fontconfig/ (to no effect), and don’t seem to have any other files starting with “font” in my home directory, nor ~/.config/ (assuming that’s what $XDG_CONFIG_HOME means). Does anyone know of any other place that could set the subpixel mode, or prevent my setting from taking effect? Is there some simple Font Config program that could help debug this? Hey there! I've got a problem with my Huawei E220 (not entirely sure about this) 3G modem stick. It used to work for several days without any issues but someone closed my laptop's lid so that it slept away and since I can't reach any remote machine. Everything seems to be normal, even the "defaulting to 10.64.64.64" message by pppd is in the logs from times it worked... I played around with the routes but was not able to solve my problem. pppd connects successfully and sets the routes and DNS servers. Interesting is that I don't get answers to any ping. Even the DNS servers don't answer but my machine resolves domain names. Putting for example googles DNS server 8.8.8.8 into /etc/resov.conf doesn't help. I even tried to kick wvdial by following <https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/3G_and_GPRS_modems_with_pppd_alone>. Everything seems to work identically. The problem is also the same. [arch-general] Weird GTK+ open directory chooser dialog behaviour

Hi list I don’t recall when this started occurring (as most applications that open files open them one at a time so I seldom come across it), but the directory selection dialog seems to always open my home directory regardless of what I navigate to. The programs that spawn the dialog subsequently crash, as they’re trying to open *every file in my home directory* instead of a specific directory. Googling found no results except for [1] on our forum, and the OP thinks it has to do with wxWidgets, but I get this behaviour with every GTK directory open dialog. Has anyone encountered this? I am trying to get qemu-kvm to work inside Virtualbox, but when I try to #modprobe the kvm-intel or kvm_intel module, it errors stating that operation is not permitted. Is qemu known to run inside virtualbox? The host hardware is an i7 that supports hardware virtualization fine. I have qemu running natively on the same box so it is confusing, but want to use VB also. Thanks in advance.

Hey everyone, There are no guidelines on the wiki for creating and distributing unofficial repositories. The tools make this feature incredibly easy to implement, but with that power comes great responsibility, and I am a bit confused. It would be nice to have a set of guidelines for creating and distributing unofficial repositories on the wiki. The reason I ask this is because I created two signed repositories for some packages I maintain, zfs and netflix-desktop. They do have usage, and in my forum posts, people seem to really appreciate the availability of the repo. However, I am not a TU, so my keys are not signed by any of the master keys. I don't want to contribute to a bad habit of not checking package sources before installing something from some repo. When I brought the topic up in #archlinux, there was some concern I was using a repo and not solely relying on AUR. I did my best to provide lots of information to people, like the complete sources and lots of information about myself and the packages so people are comfortable adding my key to their keyring. But I am a very thorough person, so doing this is natural. Others won't be so willing to do the work. So what is the general consensus regarding unofficial repositories? Thanks, demizer

Recently there have been some (slightly) confusing output lines running pacman -Syu. This evening I see: New optional dependencies for logrotate cron: scheduled log rotation However: [root@lapmike3 ~]# pacman -Q cron error: package 'cron' was not found But of course: [root@lapmike3 ~]# pacman -Q cronie cronie 1.4.8-3 So presumably I do not need to try to pacman -S cron !! Similarly the other day there was an optional dependency of python3 when in fact presumably the package name is "python" but happens to be version 3? (which for me was already installed) Just a point for clarification - especially for new users who may be a bit confused by the output and take inappropriate action as a result! -- mike c

This whole issue has long been settled, and yet they use it as an argument against Kay and his maintainership of udev.

Hi, Pulseaudio from [testing] just updated to 2.99.2-1, now mpd audio output (running mpd as my own user) fails with the following:- Nov 19 14:45 : output: Failed to enable "MPD Pulse Output" [pulse]: pa_context_connect() has failed: Connection refused Nov 19 14:45 : player_thread: problems opening audio device while playing "PointBreak-StandTough.mp3" Setting up pulseaudio to listen on TCP locally as in the wiki works, but I never needed to do that before. Can anyone else verify this? Is it perhaps logind related (worked fine before this last pulseaudio update)?

Hi, On all my installations with systemd I am seeing strange errors in journal/syslog on shutdown. For simplicity, I use "systemctl poweroff" w/o X. The error is either ---------------- Nov 18 16:37:26 bluemoon login: pam_systemd(login:session): Failed to connect to system bus: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. ---------------- or ---------------- Nov 13 18:00:02 bluemoon systemd[1]: systemd-logind.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE Nov 13 18:00:02 bluemoon systemd[1]: Stopped Login Service. Nov 13 18:00:02 bluemoon systemd[1]: Unit systemd-logind.service entered failed state ---------------- I can only achieve "clean" shutdown if all users are logged out and the power button is pressed. Somehow, if I simply stop/start systemd-logind.service it restarts cleanly. So there seems to be a race on shutdown between systemd-logind and something else (login?). I have seen similar problems on the web, but noone seems to care... Any idea how I can get more info about/debug this? [arch-general] community repository and old versions of updated packages

Hi ArchLinux-Team For some months now I'm using ArchLinux (i686) and I like it much. I use a local package mirror which I sometimes update using rsync. Since about 2 weeks I found out that old package versions of updated packages in the community repository not get deleted anymore. core and extra is OK. Dear list, I recently started a Java certification and installed netbeans. I experience a lot of few seconds freezes, with the CPU up to 100%. These issues arrise even when I am not building neither running any code. My system is usually working very well and has enough CPU to build anything in a very short time (kernels, ROM...). Is there any settings in netbeans or Arch I missed? Any idea where could this comes from? It is really annoying, especially for a Java newbie wich find it very difficult to write even the smallest code :-( TY for help.

Hello. I noticed that last testing version of LibreOffice simply doesn't start. Hello, I'm not sure where the the proper place to direct this is, but I figured this would be a good start. I am getting errors doing a system update while using http://archlinux.supsec.org/ as my first repo. When I move it to second (http://archlinux.surlyjake.com becomes first), everything works alright. After some readings, I installed a plugin which let me control how often netbeans scans, but it is not much improving. I use SUN-Java 1.6, as I need it to build Android (open jre breaks things). I am stick to netbeans for some reasons, and do not understand why it sometimes eat all my CPU. [arch-general] immediate sleep after resume

This started happening sometime after I switched to systemd (tho I am not finger pointing). Upon resume - the laptop immediately sleeps - the second resume is fine. Not every time either. Fresh boot - sleep - resume cycle seems to work fine. Googling suggested putting this in /etc/systemd/login.conf LidSwitchIgnoreInhibited=no However this makes no sense to me - as surely systemd knows the difference between the open and close lid events. The argument made was that there was competition between kde and systemd to sleep/resume and this would keep systemd from doing anything. [arch-general] LUKS, SD card reader and initramfs

I have a setup where I use LVM on LUKS to encrypt all system partitions (except /boot of course). Currently I have to input the LUKS password every time to unlock the volume, I wanted to be able to get the key from an SD card(1) so I don't have to type the password every single time, but I've run into a problem I haven't been able to solve and I'm out of ideas. Here is what I've done/tried. I have got myself an SD card and confirmed it works fine before trying anything else. I have setup everything according to the wiki to store the key between the MBR and first partition. I've added the cryptkey= entry in the kernel command line. I've added the card reader drivers to the MODULES line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and rebuilt the initramfs. I've confirmed that the modules have been added. Rebooted to try it out. This is where the problems start, once the drivers for the card reader get loaded I get spammed with messages like: mmcblk0: error -110 transferring data, sector 0, nr 8, cmd response 0x900, card status 0xb00 mmcblk0: error -110 transferring data, sector 1, nr 7, cmd response 0x900, card status 0x0 end_request: I/O error, dev mmcblk0, sector 1 Buffer I/O error on device mmcblk0, logical block 0 This happens even if I don't try to access the card to get the encryption key. The messages only stop after I remove the card. The drivers I have explicitly included in the initramfs are: sdhci-pci and mmc_block. sdhci and mmc_core get pulled as a dependencies of sdhci-pci. I have also tried to include the drivers for the other modules of the card reader, such as memory stick support and firewire since they are all hanging on the same controlled but that didn't make any difference. Since this works fine after the machine has booted I thought I might need to include some udev rule, but grepping through the rules I don't see anything that looks to be needed. The only stuff that comes up is persistent naming link creation and some udisks{,2} stuff that I suppose are meant for icon presentation or something like that. I also use a SD card with the keyfile to unlock / luks volume and works fine, no need to udev rules. My setup also failed at first, I needed to follow the module chain dependency and found a needed module not present in initramfs, just added it and started working like a charm.

Hi, According to: http://wiki.xfce.org/midori/faq It's reported that midori works with openjdk and icedtea plugin. However for some reason on arch (x86-64) midori-git (gtk3 support) + webkitgtk3 doesn't grab java at all. I don't see java applets loading on web pages requiring them, and java.com doesn't recognize any java installed... Is this just me, or is there anyone working with midori-git + webkitgtk3 and openjdk+icedtea? Thanks, -- Javier.

Using xinput_calibrator, I got the correct Area valeus for having it calibrated, so with: $ xsetwacom --set "Serial Wacom Tablet WACf008 touch" Area 43 81 952 937 I tested it and worked perfectly. hi all I am currently using orca v3.6.1 on xfce 4.10. Occasionally orca will crash causing me to have to restart it. This will sometimes also crash the at-spi2 bridge, causing orca to restart but then refuse to read anything on the screen until i reboot. I've tried to track down the processes responsible for at-spi. Typing ps -e | grep -i at-spi gives me two processes. at-spi2-dbus-launcher and at-spi2-registryd. I tried to write a script to restart at-spi2 by simply killall -9 at-spi2-dbus-launcher and at-spi2-registryd, then restarts them. but I get a command not found error when trying to restart both of them. Knowing nothing about dbus, I'm lost here. can anyone help? I've tried looking at the .config/autostart/at-spi2-registryd file provided with xfce, but it doesn't have the command I need to start at-spi2. I've researched on the web, but haven't found anything promising, only old bug reports that have been closed, and some forum posts, also about old bug reports. my search term was "restarting at-spi2." Any help/documentation/manpages are greatly appreciated.

This release contains important bug-fix for deadlock and there are arch users that wait for this version https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=146157 Some time ago I marked the package as out-of-date https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/i686/fuse/ But the package maintainer seems busy and ignores this package. Is there any way to force upgrading fuse? Actually I have more general question. There are many out-of-date packages that are not updated for a long time. Should other (non-package owners) take care of it? Is there any way for non Arch developers participate in package maintenance? I keep in mind something like MacPorts or Homebrew [1] where anyone can easily send a package update that can be reviewed and submitted to repo by developers. I found this is a great way to involve more people into project, for example I would be happy to send an update to fuse package. But I cannot find such instructions for Arch contributors. I need to be able to send a couple of applications (TeamTalk and either sox or audacious) to an icecast server and my local sound card at the same time, while also recording their output in audacity or another recording application, sox again may work here. I was able to find some information[1] that sometimes allowed me to stream to the icecast server, but even when it worked, the output of the application I moved to the streaming pulseaudio sink was no longer playing on the sound card, because it's sending the monitor of the null sink to the icecast server. I need to be able to either copy the output back to my local sound card, or setup an entirely new virtual sound card where I can move only the individual applications I want to record and stream, while also being able to hear the output on my sound card. Any help or links to some documentation that can show me how to do this would be greatly appreciated. I'm also open to any other suggestions I may not have thought of yet, including non-pulse-specific methods. I recently switched over to systemd, and am trying to get my system set up the way I like under there. I'm trying to set up qingy on systemd right now, but it doesn't seem to be working properly. I followed the instructions here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Qingy#Systemd ... and tried to set up qingy on tty6. But that doesn't seem to work. The systemctl command seems to always try to set up qingy on tty1: [darose@daroselin ~]$ sudo systemctl enable qingy@tty6 ln -s '/usr/lib/systemd/system/qingy@.service' '/etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/qingy(a)tty1.service' In addition, qingy seems to be freezing on me whenever I try to access it on the tty. I have started getting kernel oops yesterday. This started after fully updated testing repo and switch to systemd over last weekend. I'm running kde. Bug is filed as shown below with screenshot which I managed to capture of the OOPS from today's crash. Just purchased several SanDisk 4Gb Cruzer Blade USB flash drives but can not access any of them . the only error report i can find just says An error occurred while accessing `3.7GiB Removable Media`, the system responded: An unspecified error has occurred.: Not Authorized This happens both as user or root , any other non SanDisk flash drive is fine . I was hoping to put music on them for the car as the system incar can only read 4 Gb Max drives these seemed ideal look like they may bee a bummer . Any tips anyone .. I have enabled the service file, which works great, and I have edited the file in /etc/conf.d/espeakup and added --default-voice=en-us to the args, but it still uses the default (UK) voice. Hi, I was wondering whether there is a guideline regarding using Type=forking daemons in systemd units. For instance, if a daemon supports a cmdline switch to run in foreground isn't it better to use this argument in ExecStart? Personally, I was bitten by this with haveged.service which fails on shutdown and whose unit has Type=forking, but I also noticed that ntpd is allowed to fork. Since the update to gnome 3.6, when my laptop goes to suspend 2 ram by have been ideling for 5 minutes, the resume does not work : i got a black screen with mouse cursor, and no way to log in GDM. I'm having problems printing from Inkscape. I have libcups, cups-filters, avahi, ghostscript, gsfonts, samba, hplip, and hpoj installed. My printer is a HP LaserJet M2727nf MFP. I'm currently using the Postscript driver. Printing from most programs works fine - but when attempting to print from inkscape, the job fails and CUPS gives me a "filter failed" error. When using hpijs, attempting to print from Inkscape results in a blank printed page with the text "Error: /typecheck in --run-- / Operand Stack: / --dict:6/15(L)-- 1 11 Annots/E" What can I do to address this? What other information can I provide?

I discovered some new awesomeness in LVM2 (okay, not THAT new, but still, so far unknown to me). In our lvm2 package, I enabled lvmetad - this is a metadata caching daemon that reacts to events from udev. I completely reorganized our systemd and mkinitcpio lvm integration: * lvm.service and lvm-on-crypt.service are gone. * Once you install lvm2, lvmetad.socket and dmeventd.socket are always active in systemd. * If you need LVM monitoring, you need to enable lvm-monitoring.service (recommended if you use LVM, even if you don't know if you need monitoring). I didn't enable this by default because it would always start lvmetad.service. * LVM is fully hotplugged via udev. You don't need to activate anything, LVM volumes will just work. LVM no longer requires systemd-udev-settle.service and all the race conditions should be gone. * LVM in mkinitcpio is also fully hotplugged, lvmwait= is now a no-op. However, LVM in mkinitcpio now requires the udev hook. This requires that the use_lvmetad = 1 option is set in /etc/lvm/lvm.conf - this is now the default, but a .pacnew must be merged if it exists. You can restrict the hotplugging of the volume groups with the auto_activation_volume_list option in lvm.conf. If you uncomment that, only the listed volumes will be enabled. This is commented out by default. WARNING: If you have any incomplete or clustered volume groups, none of this will work yet! However, I doubt any Arch user uses that.

[arch-general] unable to boot up

Hey Archers, my issue begins with me trying to patch vmware for 3.6.3-1-arch I tried using vmware & this told me the modules were not present for 3.6.3 so I went to grab latest from AUR (vmware-patch), the comments on there suggested that the ones for 3.5.x still worked but needed to be rebuilt. so I read these instructions: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VM … stallation I noticed that in the finishing up section it gave a warning that if I update the kernel need too issue the following: vmware-modconfig --console --install-all so I ran this & tried to run vmplayer this opened but crashed as soon as i tried to play a VM, I then decided that as I had not used it for some time I would just remove it: vmware-installer --uninstall-product vmware-player this finished & so I ran: pacman -R vmware-patch all was ok (so I thought) a while later I had to reboot to do something in my win7 install (non volatile) upon completing I rebooted back to arch & now my install refuses to boot & I see: Failed to start load Kernel Modules [FAILED] see 'systemctl status systemd-modules-load.service' for details obviously systemd fall's over & offers to enter password or control-D to continue well the system refuses to go any further & locks up totally (no flashing kbd lights like a panic though!) the exact same happens when I boot the fallback kernel I can chroot into it using the old media (CORE 2011.08.19) which is the most recent I have, whilst chrooted in I thought perhaps the old vmware modules did not get removed correctly so I blacklisted them in: /etc/modprobe.d/vmware.conf blacklist vmmon [...] I have managed to get into the system using the following boot parameter: systemd.unit=rescue.target I then ran: systemctl status systemd-modules-load.service this provided the default message about the service not starting but no reason why or what caused it to fail So any advice or way forward would be appreciated as I am totally lost & have googled everything I can think of which may help but this is the first time I have b0rk3d the modules & am lost as to what to do. -- Regards Thomas Rand
