[arch-general] Xorg-server 1.8 - when?

Hello, I'd like to ask what are the plans for the xorg-server 1.8, especially now when RC1 of xorg-server 1.9 is out. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not demanding anything but I'm wondering what is holding back the move to [extra]. I'm using new xorg-server on two different computers (notebook with intel and desktop with nvidia's blob) for some time without any problems. Have a nice day, Lukas

I am a full time KDE user and I don't have GNOME or its libraries. Hi folks, the unrealircd version in community (3.2.8.1-2) has been flagged as containing a backdoor which allows an attacker to execute commands with the privileges of the user running the daemon. [arch-general] Label and Format USB Drive

I have a USB thrumb drive when I mount it, it mounts fine and shows up as "USBDRIVE" on my system. I would like to know how I can reformat the drive as fat32 using the 'mkfs' command and also setting a new system label on the drive as "ocz_usb"? I do not appear to have the tools installed on my Arch system that allow me to format as fat32 and can't find the command to format and set the label? Can this be done in one command step?

[arch-general] Bad Magic Number in Superblock - Any trick for Arch or for new kernels?

Guys, I have a disk on a arch box that has gone south. No prior warning, no smart errors, no nothing. Granted the drive is 5-6 years old, so a complete crater is not out of the question. The situation: On reboot - grub 22 error boot arch install cd 2009-08, cannot mount drive partition table shows 1 partition /dev/hda1 (PATA drive) (should be 3) (I can't put my hands on the saved 'fdisk -l' data, it's somewhere) gparted 0.46 (0.44 wont work) - loads, but only shows a single partition fsck -> Gives the bad magic number in superblock error, tries backup same error Booted without issue for over a year From the looks of it, the drive scattered. But my question is "Is there something with all the recent kernel changes that would require troubleshooting this drive error in a different way than usual?" I know there have been a lot of changes in moving modules into the kernel, but I don't know what got moved (if anything related to drives), or how it might affect my troubleshooting. Before I add the drive to the heap of drives in my 'dead drive box' are there any other silver bullets I should try to try and resurrect the drive? I have fixes for alot of packages in extra and community. you can find the fixes here: http://github.com/godane/abs-source/tree/my-fixes its best to 'git clone git://github.com/godane/abs-source.git' without quotes. Do a 'git diff abs-20100611 my-fixes' without quotes to see the fixes i added to them. You can ignore aumix-gtk since it was updated. Also all texlive-*-doc url are broken. There url is you guys so i didn't bother to fix those. I hope this helps.

IMHO it's a thing that makes a distro more 'prestigious' -- it's quite difficult to convince someone to using a distro for something more than just a testing workstation if it's security is, let's say... 'unknown'. Unfortunately there *are* some regressions in the upstream that make the latest stable releases vulnerable. In fact it's the main reason that prevents my faculty from switching from Gentoo and log-time compilations to simple and KISS-ing Arch. Any work toward ALSTF in the recent past? Best regards, Marek

Greetings, I recently migrated to archlinux and over-all find it quite good. I have had much success using the wiki to get my system set up and configured to my liking. So far, I only have one issue I can't resolve. I am trying to get SynCE working on my system so I can transfer material between my laptop and a mobile device. Some potentially useful information: I'm running 32-bitt archlinux with the gnome desktop. I received the mobile device (a Braillenote) in the summer of 2001, so it's running an old version of WindowsCE (and slightly modified to interact with the braille input/output). I used to have synCE working on a previous Linux installation (*not* archlinux) using synce-serial and odccm to connect through a USB-serial bridge. I used pacman to install synce-libsynce, synce-librapi, synce-serial and synce-odccm (the packages required to get the connection to work on my old system). I ran synce-serial-config ttyUSB0 which, from the output, appeared to work correctly. But when I run odccm and try to connect with synce-serial-start, it appears the connection is established and dropped again in an instant. Synce-serialstart provides the basic message that I'm used to seeing when it makes a connection, nd my mobile device chirps to indicate it's connected, but it quickly makes the disconnect tone right after, and any subsequent attempt to interact with the mobile device using pcp, pls etc produce failure messages that neither hal nor odccm can find a connection. Hello list, I tried audacious for a change this morning, but it segfaulted on visualisation change[1]. From the look of the backtrace[2], and seeing that glib was updated a couple of days ago, a simple rebuild of the package should be sufficient. I'm having a problem getting dialup to work... Due to financial limitations, I'm going to have to give up my expensive broadband connection in favor of {sigh} dial-up which will save me about $50/month. I still have my external v92 zoom serial modem from before I went broadband. But now that my only working computer is my laptop I had the problem of not having a serial port to connect it to. I already tried to get my laptops internal {win}modem to work via Linmodem, but failed miserably... Thus I acquired a usb/serial adapter cable, and used it to connect my v92 modem. wvdialconf detected it OK. But I can't get it to dial. With some experimentation based on some init strings I found online and a brief modem command reference, I've been able to get the modem to at least go off hook, by adding H1 to the Init2 string. Proving at least that wvdial was attempting to control the correct device. But it didn't dial. It complained that my dial string was invalid and disconnected... Except that the modem didn't hang up (I listened to the phone company recording about hanging up and dialing again...) A little more experimentation reveled that if I used &C0 instead of &C1 it would hang up when it disconnects. But it still doesn't actually dial. And still complains about my dial string. I have verified the 7 digit 'Phone = "7340102" ' string by manually dialing it with a telephone and heard the sound of my ISP's modem attempting to negotiate a connection. And, in my wvdial.conf, I have tried the string both with and without quotes. I've included {below} a copy of my wvdial.conf & pasted in the results of my last attempt to use wvdial... HI all, I tried all arch packages of adobe-air from AUR and also bin32-adobe-air without success. So i went to their website and downloaded the .bin file for linux. So i ran chmod a+x AdobeAirInstaller.bin to make it executable and then ran sudo ./AdobeAirInstaller.bin. I remember i did this and successfully installed adobe air on Ubuntu but now in arch it throws an error. Error loading the runtime (libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64). I am using 64 bit arch. Please help. Thanks

Hi folks, Of course, it's very convenient to install Archlinux using a bootable USB flash putting the corresponding .iso file in it (e.g. archlinux-2010.05-core-i686.iso). But it's not convenient to keep a separate flash drive for it. The natural solution is to create another partition at the same jump drive for regular file transfers etc. Linux has no problem working with multiple partitions, but not M$ Windows. It principally recognizes only the 1st partition. Some flash drives can be hacked with toggling so called Removable Media Bit, but most cannot. I realized that the easiest way is to "manually" change the partition number of the bootable image before writing it into a flash drive. The script below does it rewriting the partition record from the first line to the second one. (Alternatively you can rework it to read back the MBR from the bootable drive, hack it and write back). Then with fdisk you can create another partition with number 1 - and voilà - it will be recognizable even by M$. Hi, Why is it that Arch seems to take longer than say other distros such as Ubuntu, Debian, etc, to support newer versions of Xorg and Gnome? I was curious about that process. While Debian/Ubuntu/etc distros seem to be supporting the Gnome desktop just fine, it appears that others most noticeably that of Gentoo and other such similar distros, mask or test out Gnome/Xorg, rather than releasing it strate away into say in Arches case, the extra/core repos. I had another question, relating to that of Arch, some webpages I have found compare Arch to Debian Cid/Unstable. How true is this, and exactly in what way is Arch Linux itself, like that of Debian Cid? Thanks! Hello, anyone else experiencing issues with kwalletmanager after the upgrade? I upgraded during the kdelibs 4.4.3 issue, but that's fixed now. I don't know if it was a buggy upgrade or the release but the new kde sucks on my machine. Keybindings, such as alt+f2, volume up/down, alt+tab, etc., don't work and my main problem is Kwalletmanager. It runs in tray ok, but my wallet is missing, settings don't react,... I've filed a bug http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/19678 . I did even try yaourt -Rcsn kde and yaourt -S kde but bugs still persist. Any ideas on fixing this? I did a update / upgrade today and noticed that there was a new kernel installed so I rebooted my Arch workstation. Sadly I no longer have any audio in Gnome via flash plugin. I checked and made sure I am a member of the 'audio' group if that matters...I am. I don't know if sound was broken before or after the upgrade but I can't listen to Pandora or any streaming audio via the web. I checked my sound properties and everything appears to be normal. [arch-general] getting fed up with gnome's fast-user-switching experience

Maybe some of you have had similar problems, maybe some have fixed them, seen them vanish with updates, or are still dealing with them. On pretty much every computer I interact with that uses Gnome (Arch, et al.) there is always one problem or another trying to log out, switch users, or resume from suspend. The symptom is usually a blank screen (with or without the backlight), or a blank screen with just the mouse. I'm not sure which combination of programs is to blame. But I've suspected (in no particular order): gdm gnome-session pm-utils gnome-screensaver kernel/xorg drivers for nvidia/ati/intel When encountered with a blank screen, sometimes the solution is as simple as ctrl+alt+f# to find the right tty. Sometimes ctrl+alt+backspace will work if DontZap is disabled. Sometimes I can ssh from another computer and do an (tel)init 3; (tel)init 5. And many unfortunate times I either can't log in remotely or the init trick doesn't work - I'm forced to do a hard reboot. The worst part is, it is really beginning to feel completely random. Or difficult to pinpoint, like special combinations of users that are logged and the user that is initiating the logout/suspend/etc (corrupted gconf?) *sigh* Do any of you have a multi-user gnome system with no problems at all here?

Has anyone managed to get Mozilla Prism to run properly? The behaviour I see is that a .desktop file and a file in ~/.webapps are created. Both look all right to my untrained eye. The behaviour when double-clicking the .desktop file is as expected though. I never end up where I intended, but always at the default startpage (http://www.google.com/firefox) You can find a screenshot of what I got after creating a webapp for youtube (URL http://www.youtube.com/) and ran it for the first time here[1]. [arch-general] Kudos - kernel handling of radeon driver getting much better

Guys, Here is one worth noting. The radeon driver has come a long way in the past couple of kernels or Xorg packages. I know the driver itself hasn't changed since 11/2009 (ver. 1.3.0-1), but my desktop is working much better than the last time I updated. I have switched all 12 or so of my boxes to Arch (work and home included). The only two that are still suse are my laptops due to the fglrx driver. I have 2 spare drives for each laptop and on one drive for each laptop I did a complete wipe and then installed Arch. I did this about 14 months ago and I update the spare drives every month or two. The only reason I haven't moved my laptops to Arch is solely the gpu kernel module issue. ( to complicate matters, both laptops use the 'legacy' driver as a result of ATI screwing its customer base and dropping all support for linux for all pre-2400 series chipsets) This hit laptops hard. The last laptop I bought was 2008 and it is now a 'legacy' box The benefits that the fglrx driver provide over either the radeon or radeonhd drivers are primarily 2-fold, speed (obvious) and most important gpu clock powerdown (idling unneeded parts of the gpu) while running with massively reduces the gpu heat load. (and fan noise, etc..) On update tonight. I stared the box, fired up gnome, started compiz and Wow! It was working fine. I was actually 'smooth'. Much improved over the old jerky behavior that existed when I last updated at the end of Feb. It's not as fast as the fglrx driver, but it is no longer a sticking point on moving the box to arch. Cooling is also improved. The heat is still an issue as heat drives fan noise. However, I have been able to work in Arch for the past several hours and my palm-rest is not on fire! And when I'm idling the box, the fan noise is down to a soft hum -- workable. Much improved over the XB-70 sound with all 6 afterburners lit ;-) So to whoever the kudos go -- job well done! I put updated device-mapper/lvm2 2.02.66 and cryptsetup 1.1.1 packages to testing. These packages enable udev synchronization to finally get rid of all race conditions related to udev rules. I also cleaned up the PKGBUILDs massively and removed all static binaries and libraries from the packages. Dynamic lvm and cryptsetup now run entirely from /{bin,lib}, without the need for /usr. Hi, Since the update of perl 5.10 to 5.12 yesterday, checkgmail (from community) doesn’t work anymore, it fails with this error : /usr/bin/perl: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/auto/Glib/Glib.so: undefined symbol: Perl_sv_utf8_upgrade_flags Downgrading to perl 5.10 make it work, and updating checkgmail (with checkgmail --update) doesn’t solve the problem. While I was changing my nfs server from NFSv3 to NFSv4 I've found our user mapping broken. Before idmapd gets started we need to make sure nfsd module is loaded. If the module is not loaded all files are mapped to nobody the guest account. We load it in the nfs-common init script now. We want to replace the LTS kernel series .27 soon with the .32 series. The .32 series has been in testing now for a while. Please test if anything is broken for you apart from broken modules you have built your own. Maybe we provide module packages in the future. One issue is known in .32 series: OpenOffice has problems with NFSv3 locking mechanism. This can be solved by using NFSv4. Please test and give signoffs. -Andy

Hi all, The subject should spell it out, but what I'm wondering is if there is any way to force Arch to not probe for say eth0 when eth1 is prefered over eth0 and such? Thanks for any help on that question! Basically eth0 is my laptop's ethernet card, while eth1 is the wireless card. While the wireless card is used specifically for Internet connection, the wired is never used at all. I have my laptop configured through the use of netCFG to handle the wireless to make it a bit faster to configure. While that is the case, I would prefer that only that eth1 is used, and would like to see eht0 disappear totally from the list of detected network interfaces if Arches kernel is flexible enough to do this. I'm new to Arch Linux & Linux in general, so please excuse any newbie questions... Can the Arch Linux install do a dualboot installation? I've read some documentation and it seems to be iffy on this point. Also, why are most Linux users and programmers so obsessed with Python? [arch-general] regression in nouveau ?

Hello all, over the past few months I have installed Arch on a number of systems, all of them used for quite intensive audio work (think of systems with > 1000 jack ports). All of them have worked flawlessly, no latency problems even with the standard kernel. Today I installed one more, on exactly the same HW as the previous one which was something like 6 weeks ago. Main difference is probably kernel 2.6.33 instead of 32. This system is completely unusable: almost anything 'graphical' - opening or closing windows, changing workspaces, etc. will generate showers of xruns. Using nouveau's 'no_accel' option solves the xruns, audio is as stable as it has ever been. But the system is again useless - just scrolling an xterm up one line takes a second or so. Nor has using this option been necessary before (all of the previous installs use nouveau). So has anything changed in nouveau that can explain this ? Any solutions ? Since everything worked fine for month/years I first thought about a bug which might get fixed soon but while 2.6.33 is pretty settled and I couldn't find something in bug track I think the problem is somehow specific to my machine. As mentioned everything worked fine. I simply used 's2ram -f -p -m' to suspend my machine (need the parameter due to my ATI graphics card). No it seems suspending works fine but waking up crashes. When waking the computer up the screens stay black. In addition the HDD LED turns on for ~8sec and subsequent turns off. That's it. It seems dead. Also "blind" commands have no effect... I tried several parameter combination as well as pm-utils (which error-free logs confirm my assumption that at least suspending works fine). Also Xorg seems not to be the problem, since even suspending from a blank tty (without xserver running at all) does not make the computer wake up afterward. Any ideas on this? Changing the version number and the related MD5Sum works like a charm for me (i686). I still need to test it on my x64 at home but in just in case, attached is the up-to-date PKGBUILD. Hi, I'm going to get a new pc, replacing my now more than 5 years old pc. I would like to keep my current arch installation, and hope to prevent the need to do a full reinstall. I like the software I have, and I like the configuration I have... Could I just put my old harddisk (which is relatively new and still OK, I have SMART enabled) in the new pc and reboot? Both are amd 64 bit cpu's, the old one one of the first athlon 64's, the new one a Phenom II X6 1035T (and my current arch linux install is 64bit) Of course stuff like chipset, network chip, video etc. are all different. For video that would be no problem, I could install other (current = nvidia, new pc = ati) drivers from the text console. However, I'd like basic stuff and network to work :-) Could anyone give me an idea about the chance of luck for such an operation? Tips, hints? Or would you just advise a clean install and install and reconfigure all software again? Regards, Vincent Schut.

Hi all. I've been looking into several packages that are not in the community repository of Arch Linux. One is the Anope latest-stable package. If any of you have ran an IRC server such as UnrealIRCd, wich is in arch, then you will know what Anope is. I don't have the time at present to package Anope myself, and was intending to look at the old ANope 1.9 devel build, but that package is out of date. What if looking at that PKGBuild isn't enough and the Anope 1.8 package breaks? I've compiled Anope millions of times before on Arch, and other distros without problems. But the ./Configure script requires that questions are answered with either Y's or N's in specific places at least I think, it's been some time sinse I've ran an IRC network on Linux with the Anope services package. I wonder who the author of the UnrealIRCd package presently Is? Another package that I wonder if anyone would be interested in seeing if it is possible for inclusion (again) because I just don't have the time to do anything with it personally, is the Citadle mail server from: http://www.citadel.org/ I have found that server extremely simpol to install for those who aren't used to say Postfix, and the webserver even has an intigration with that, so that say Squirlmail isn't required. What do you folks think? I'd like to see the Anope stable/Citadle packages someday included in Arch. If I had the time I'd try to build those myself. But due to circumstances I lack the time necessary to maintaine such packages. Does anyone have any useful feedback? I've already read the wiki so this isn't an issue of "hasn't read documentation" This is an issue of not having time to maintain, so why would I wish to start doing something for the Arch community and not have time to continue once began anyhow? I love the Arch community, and although I myself am no C programmer, I still wish to help out by making useful package suggestions and such.If anyone has any great feedback on this posting please let me know, or do so off list! It's that time for me again... my desktop is getting long in the tooth so I'm starting to look around for a replacement. This time I thought I'd also include laptops in my search. However, with laptops it's difficult to find out just how well they work with Linux. Are all the built-in devices, webcams, fingerprint scanners etc, fully supported? Is the power management (ACPI) fully supported? Etc, etc... In the past I've heard good things about Linux on IBM's ThinkPads. But I've heard some VERY bad things about getting Linux working well on Lenovo's recent models. So, I resort to ask for advice on this mailing list. What laptops should I have a look at? I already did a google search on this, but i only found howtos of getting it to work / disable it. It looks like xset q does not print the actual state. Maybe there is a hook for screen blanking? Now it seemed to be both aplication and distro dependant, with Arch being on the better side. Though I've got to say again, it was not a benchmark, just my personal experiment. As for me, if I had a machine with plenty RAM (that is from my perspective ~GB), than I would choose 64 bit. If I had like 1 -- 2 GB, than I would definitely go 32 bit. Hi, I was wondering what the best mirror would be for someone living ni Ohio? I'm curious if there are better mirrors than what I'm currently using? The present mirror I'm using is the esanews mirror, and I frequently get this while performing pacman upgrades with pacman -Syu: Could not download community.db and other such messages. Are there better mirrors in general? Or should I run the mirrorrank script? Hopefully the mirror script will use a U.S mirror as I live in the U.S. I mention Ohio because that's the state I live in presently, and am only trying to figure out if I could find a mirror that might be closer, or whatever. I've set up my system so that when I close the laptop lid the computer goes into suspend mode. However, when I wake it up by pressing the power button the system starts, and after 3-5 sec it goes into suspend mode again. If I then press the power button again, it starts and stays on. [arch-general] Gnome - blank dialog when resuming from suspend

I'm having trouble finding a bug report on this but I've experienced it on 4 different computers. When I suspend (pm-utils) though System -> Shut Down -> Suspend (button), the shut down dialog is still on the screen and blank, when I resume. Anyone know exactly what's responsible for this? gnome-screensaver, pm-utils, gdm, ...? And if it's upstream or a distribution thing? (I think upstream). Thanks

Even oddly, downgrade telepathy-butterfly to 0.5.9-1 cannot solve the problem. So I'm wondering if this is a problem caused by the new butterfly package? Hello Arch, is anyone using the arch installer with squid proxy ? (or any other cache proxy) i'm again so close my goal that it makes me nervous :) - squid installed on the host machine, 192.168.0.35:3128 - vbox client in the same machine, network bridged after login in the arch 2010.05 image (as vbox client) i do: # dhcpcd eth0 # export ftp_proxy='192.168.0.35:3128' # export http_proxy='192.168.0.35:3128' # pacman -Syu and it works, it gets the db from the proxy cache, and also updates pacman from there (i see it in the squid logs, and download speed). everything works ok. then i tried to use the attached pacinst.aif file as profile for aif -p automatic installation and i get the attached aif.log... (it fails on getting the core.db.tar.gz) i cant attach any debug.log cause `aif -p automatic -c pacinst.aif -d -l` doesnt create any /var/log/aif/debug.log and `aif -d -l -p automatic -c pacinst.aif`just gives me the usage info, without any errors... and also the "Invalid URL scheme" errors that i see in tty7 are nowhere to find in /var/log/* got 3 days free in a row, would love to hack on arch ;) cheers .andre

Hi I was wondering why the policy was to not use /usr/libexec and move what should go there to /usr/lib/<pkgname>. While it isn't serious it seems to me that this deviation from the default behavior is unnecessary. One scenario I can think of where this might cause a problem is if a very security conscious administrator wanted to mount /usr/lib as noexec. Hi, as I need a tftp client in order to reflash my WRT54GL I realised that Arch Linux hasn't got one in the main repositories. Normally "tftp" is part of Inetutils (http://www.gnu.org/software/inetutils/) Looking at the PKGBUILD of "inetutils" confuses me, as it explicitly disables tftp. I know that I can easily rebuild the package, but I'm wondering why it is disabled by default? At least you should provide a seperate tftp package, as there are certainly people who need a tftp client, for instance me ;). -- Best regards, Karol Babioch

Hi, I don't know whether my memory is right on that, but as far as I can remember there was an article in the wiki describing how to setup and use the aircrack- ng suite. I can't find this one anymore :(. Therefore I suppose it has been deleted. Am I right on this? If so, was there any specific reason? Any legal issues? I can't imagine that nobody has written an article about these tools. Is it safe to do so, or are there any concerns that should discourage me? I'm not a lawyer, but as there is a quite good documentation on the project site (http://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=getting_started) it can't be that critical, can it? Normally you always have the possibility to say that you want to use it for educational purposes at home, at least from what I'm aware of. So is there any specific reason why there isn't such an article yet (but my memory tells me that there was one :)), or hasn't anyone thought of this until now? -- Best regards, Karol Babioch

Hi, i would like to experiment with (semi) automatic installation and configuration of my arch system(s). and to make it more faster i would like to setup a "pkg-proxy". on debian there are many tools for this http://www.debian-administration.org/polls/139 but i would rather not yet use squid (too much hassle) ;) at the moment i would use it on my host system, serving packages for vm clients. (when i get more money/hardware, i would try squid as transparent proxy) so, is there a tool for arch linux that caches arch packages, and which i can use as proxy in the arch installer and beyond. thanks .andre

I could make PulseAudio installation significantly easier by putting specially-built packages (e.g. sdl-pulse, openal-pulse) into [community] and grouping them in a "pulse" group. This group would also include a "pulse-asoundrc" package containing a pulse-configured asound.conf, as well as depending on alsa-plugins. Should I go ahead with this? Any suggestions?

Currently my pc is a laptop. I don't use a wireless interface. I connect to the Internet via cable broadband with a wired Ethernet connection and DHCP... This id very reliable. I can usually disconnect the laptop from the Ethernet cable and bring it into the livingroom for various offline use. Then when I bring it back to my desk, all I usually have to to is plug the Ethernet cable back in and wait a few seconds and the Internet will start to work again. BUT that is contingent on the Ethernet cable having been connected during boot up. So if for example I were to boot up my laptop in the livingroom where there isn't an Ethernet connection the boot process will delay at the point where it's screen message says its starting the network. Then it says it failed and continues setting everything else up. At this point, if I bring the laptop back to the desk, and plug in the Ethernet cable, it doesn't automatically connect. One of these days I hope to move permanently to Arch-however, I'm on Windows presently so am running Arch in a VMware virtual machine by using VMware workstation 7 on Windows. I still do make use of tools such as the NetCFG tool, especially. As a blind Arch user, and one who does a lot of repetitive tasks, I like the use of netcfg personally. I have used it, especially rather than say, configuring WPA_Supplicant manually, even after reading all the documentation. While I do appreciate and value Arch Linux for most of the manual configuration, I still believe in my heart that automation of some tasks is an okay thing to do. What do you folks think? I for instance, tend to love pre-configuring specific files, such as Pacman.conf, and other various small files, and just cary them on a small USB 4GB thumb-drive of mine. That way, if and when I install Arch regardless of a VM or real environment, I have the various files to work with a head of time, already configured by me in the first place, avoiding the need to do that all over again. Usually, after that, I just need to cp the files for use in whatever they're intended to be used for. My first question though is this: does the ifdplug interface tool only work with Ethernet cards? Or is wireless Ethernet cards also supported? Also, when it comes to Arch and the various uses of the system environment, how was Arch designed so as to be so flexible? It amazes me at how light Arch Linux really is-it performed without a problem on my Intel Pentium III, 930MHZ, 256MB RAM Del desktop computer for two years. Of course, at the time I had a secondary Windows machine for the tools I use like Skype, that still remain unaccessible to the blind/visually impared community, whare as Skype in windows/Apple Mac remains the most accessible. Similar issues of accessibility/bugs occur in Mozilla's Firefox. presently, I find that Arch is one of the most interesting distrobutions of Linux available out there. Listmates, The network-ups-tools-2.4.3-1 package is still having problems with the usbhid-ups driver. I opened http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/19351 on 5/3, but it still isn't assigned to anyone. I don't know if that's normal or not? After update to kernel26-2.6.33.4-1, I thought I would re-try network-ups-tools-2.4.3-1 to see if it might have been related to the last kernel. [arch-general] Question regarding the ArchLinux iso core image

Hi. I've recently seen threads on this list pertaining to interesting issues with the Arch Linux core isos. I haven't had that problem in my primary tests of those Isos in particular. Is there any reason why a successful installation may occur in one environment over another? Or is this a common Linux problem. Thanks for answering my question. I hope that the rest of you folks have successful Core installations, however a net-install is the only real way to isntall Arch Linux. I do not see the point of the core installer media, personally. Why would one wish to use that? A snapshot will become outdated in a flash, and all of you archers know this. As soon as a newer package version is available the entire snapshot is outdated instantly. Or will be, given a few weeks/months/years/whatever. I therefore have always installed from what I believe to be the Arch-Way, wich is installing via the Internet alone to have an updated system. Does anyone agree/disagree with my idea on the proper way to install Arch? :D Regards, --Keith

Okay guys, props to Thomas for finding out the problem with the initialization of wireless cards. I built new images, dated 2010.05.16 (aka "final final images" ;)) in which this should be fixed, and which also come with updated core packages, most notably kernel26-2.6.33.4-1 http://build.archlinux.org/isos/ thanks to everyone who tested the 2010.05.13 (or earlier) images. i received confirmation for 4 images with which a boot+installation went fine. for netinstall-dual.iso I only reiceved confirmation that it boots fine (but that's enough, given the other tested images). However i got no feedback for the core-x86_64 image. So right now, these two things are needed: * confirmation that archlinux-2010.05.16-core-x86_64.iso boots fine. * confirmation that wireless cards are properly initialised now. cheers, and stay tuned for a release soonish :) Dieter

Hi, I'm running Arch for quite a while on several machines. On one laptop there were no updates applied for quite a while. It was running kde4.0 and was using hda instead of sda as harddisk device. After applying all updates (download was roughly 1.8 GB) there are some issues (mainly with kde 4.4.3). All icons are missing until I switch icon-theme. After that there are still lots of icons missing, kde itself (eg. log-off), kde-apps (system-management), applications (k3b) and "unrelated" apps (opera). Also missing are the rating stars inside dolphin and gwenview (and probably others). I reinstalled all kde-meta packages wich pulled a view additional packages but didn't change anything. I tried to delete $HOME/.kde4 and also tried a newly created user. I looked at all(?) *.pacnew files. The only somehow related was kdm but couldn't find anything else. Any hints? Regards, Wolfgang

The vim runtime that can be retrieved via rsync is outdated. Some of the patches modify the runtime, and some of these changes (e.g. 394) are lost when the runtime is overwritten with the runtime from rsync. Not using the runtime from rsync at all also misses some updates. Any thoughts on how to solve this? One option would be to build vim from Mercurial (http://vim.googlecode.com)

It denotes the language code (plus optional country code) for the PO file. This field can be used by automated tools, such as spell checkers. It is expected to be more reliable than looking at the file name or at the 'Language-Team' field in the header entry. msgmerge, msgcat, msgen have a new option --lang that allows to specify this field. Additionally, msgmerge fills in this new field by looking at the 'Language-Team' field (if the --lang option is not given). * xgettext and PO file format: For messages with plural forms, programmers can inform the translators about the range of possible values of the numeric argument, like this: /* xgettext: range: 0..15 */ This information 'range: 0..15' is stored in the PO file as a flag attached to the message. After all, chances are that if you hadn't undertook something like this, that Arch still would not have the Speakup screen reader, not to mention an accessible installer. I'd also like to send a formal apology to the entire Arch-Linux release-team as well. Hi, although this is not specific to my Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN wireless card, the following URL shows similar issues, and the primary poster, was having to do exactly what I'm doing with kernel 2.6.33 with regards to: rmmod iwlagn modprobe iwlagn Or: modprobe -r iwlagn modprobe iwlagn Or: insmod iwlagn Either way, I keep aving to do this-even though the module loads at boot from Arches LiveCD. I refuse to install Arch, because I am sure that this will occur on the hard-drive as well. I don't know if Chris enabled the firmware hook in his initrd. Chris, could you please look and upload new releases of the builds (or an X86-64 build for me in some temp directory on your webpage directory if you did not enable the firmware hook? And if there is a newer kernel than what was in your april 2010 snapshots, then could you please update that as well? Having to modprobe all the time is annoying. I gave the URL before URL of my dmesg output with your LiveCD chris (and yes) the firmware Ucode file for my wireless card is there, and the module loads, but the firmware doesn't, is there any chance you forgot to enable that hook? The paste URL for this dmesg output Chris for you to viw for yourself (and you'll see) where rmmodding and modprobing will work-though wlan0 should already be there but I do not think you have enabled firmware in the kernel image stuff-so I suggest reviewing your latest snapshot on your website and seeing if this is the case-or am I the only one with this issue? If this is not a difficult thing to resolve, then please, could someone please help? I'll never install Arch again if this is something that will always break my machine when wireless is the only option I have and I need the firmware to just autoload on the liveCD. I do not like this modprobing business whatsoever, and all I need to say at the moment is "screw the Arch Way" of doing things at the moment. Arch is great-but if this is something that is always going to happen, then I don't know what Arch is turning into. I've seen all the interesting kernel related problems lately with busibox and other such things-and at the moment my furstration with simply getting the firmware to load on Chris's TalkingArch CD is driving me up the blasted wall.Arch is great-but as far as this having to even touch modprobe...well this is just not going to be acceptable. Sorry for taking my frustrations out on the entire Arch Linux development/release team, but I seriously don't care at the moment about my politeness at the moment. All I care about is the fact that this is happening, and seems totally unsolvable. Even my best Linux blind friend who has figured out ways around my problems in the passed can't solve this issue- so I'm just hoping that some one in Arch might be able to help. I'm also frustrated because noone on #Arch-Linux seems to be able to help, and the wiki is failing me entirely. Thanks for letting me rant, and once again sorry for taking my frustrations out on Chris who has done so well with TalkingArch and everyone else, but I'm lible for a while to blaim anything and everything on this firmware crap until I know for damnd sure wwhy it does this, and how to smash this issue once and for all. I don't have time to learn C, and also don't know who maintains the Ucode files for ArchLinux, but I hope that someone will look at this list and see if anything can be done in any respect, kernel iwlagn related or firmware, or whatever. If anyone figures out how to resolve this entirely, then great. I just hope that you didn't forget to use the firmware hook Chris-otherwise all my frustrations will have been useless. But I refuse to accept that Arch-specifically is the only distrobution with this problem. Hello. 1. The "qiv" package has an obsolete dependency "libexif". The 2.2.3 Changelog says: "[tw] use gdk_pixbuf to autorotate with EXIF tags instead of libexif. Note: needs at least GDK 2.12" 2. The "libtorrent" will require makedepends=(cppunit) from the next release (it already requires it in the main svn repository). [arch-general] Removing padevchooser and paman

I would like to remove these two packages from community and move them to unsupported (AUR). Both are marked as obsolete by upstream[1] and weren't updated since 2007. padevchooser is a notification area app that allows choosing default sinks and sources, as well as starting some other PulseAudio applications. It has been obsoleted by pavucontrol, which also allows much finer control over sink and source usage. paman is a diagnostic tool that provides information similar to "pacmd list", as well as allowing control of stream volumes (provided by pavucontrol) and playing samples from the cache (pacmd play-sample). Hello, please just test a bit more the new kernel, I have just rebooted to the new 2.6.33.3-2 kernel and got kernel panic on Init: ..something about missing symbols, failed exec and 52 - I didn't take notes of that and don't know if it's logged somewhere (?) I'm using [testing], i686, and encrypted disk, but this probably occurred before this. I'll retest when I have time.. Anybody else experiencing this? From the look of the backtrace[2], and seeing that glib was updated a couple of days ago, a simple rebuild of the package should be sufficient. [arch-general] Arch Linux release Schedule

Hi all. I remember way back when Aaron G posted about how Arches goal would be to release every four months or so to keep up with regular kernel releases and frequent ISO images. However, I remember the last official Iso was in August of 2009. I am not saying that that is bad or anything. I am curious why there hasn't been a release since that time period? I never figured that out. I did send an email to our fine Arch Linux leader using a GMail address-and am curious if that address just isn't checked? I did send Aaron some other interesting emails of late as well. But I haven't received anything-though being a leader of a project such as Arch Linux must take up a lot of time. Take care! This new kernel just exports some additional symbols for aufs2 which was updated to a new snapshot. This should hopefully fix some issues with the .33 kernel and aufs. Related aufs packages are: aufs2 2.6.33_20100425-2 and aufs2-util 20100422-1 In addition to regular sign-off some feedback about aufs would be nice; especially if you use archiso. Good day amigos, I was reading the "about" page (http://www.archlinux.org/about/) in the archlinux website and I noticed that this line is a little outdated: "Arch also offers an [unsupported] section in the Arch Linux User Repository (AUR), which contains over 9,000 build scripts" It should say "over 21.000 build scripts". And one more question: is there a proposed starting date or a proposed selection procedure or just additional information for the Junior Developer scheme? hello, i maintain an unofficial btrfs initcpio hook in AUR: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33376 the hook provides rollback support among other (future) features. hook is also required for anyone using a multi-device btrfs setup. i would like to start/be included in discussion involving btrfs integration into AIF, and other aspects of Arch. i think it would be nice for users to be able to have the option to use the new filesystem by default-ish, and have the tools needed to work with it. specifically, it would be really neat to have "rollback" support in a "rolling" distro. people would likely be more willing to ride the edge of the testing repo if they knew they could simply reboot and all could be well again when things did break. right now, the rollback feature provided by the hook is volatile, but this is only an implementation detail. what i mean by this is once you rollback, you CANNOT promote the "rollback" subvolume to be the new "active" (default) subvolume; you must fix the default subvolume manually and reboot again. anything you do in rollback mode will be lost on the next rollback. this is something i intend to change, but i need some input from other developers. what i propose is to do away with installing the system onto the default subvolume (like a typical installation); system will be installed to it's own subvolume (/root/__active). something like this: . ├── home │ ├── __active │ ├── __rollback │ ├── snap_11-11-1111_11-11-11 │ └── snap_22-22-2222_22-22-22 └── root ├── __active ├── __rollback ├── snap_11-11-1111_11-11-11 └── snap_22-22-2222_22-22-22 this is the "subroot" structure; underneath your / [root]. "." is the original default subvolume. /root/__active is your "primary" (default) system. /root/ __rollback is a volatile copy of a /root/snap_XX (you boot into this [__rollback] when you "rollback"). since snap_XX gets copied to __rollback... if you decide you want to ditch your changes to __active (since it's messed up anyways), you just replace __active with __rollback (delete/rename), reboot, and voilà! your system's __active subvolume works again, and none of your snapshots got messed with. same logic for /home/__active and /home/__rollback (and snap_XX) except you wouldn't have to reboot... maybe we can create login manager ([xkg]dm) hooks to remount your home folder with a "rollback" on the next logout or something? who knows. we could take a snapshot after install (on the very first boot), called "__original" or something, then users would always have a copy of their system immediately after installation; they could revert/use/delete that if they wanted to at any time. however, this setup would require mounting the default subvolume somewhere else in order to gain access to the "subroot" structure, but it would guarantee that you could not destroy your system no matter what you did to your / [root]. any ideas on this? my attempts to generate interest in the forums are falling on deaf ears so i thought i'd try my luck here. thanks, C Anthony

[arch-general] Brasero Wont Copy Disks

I just installed Brasero to burn / copy disks. I first added my user 'carlos' to the 'optical' group. However when I try and copy a disk on my machine, I get an immediate error that says it fails. Then when I save the log, it's blank. It has no details as to why the copy failed. Anyone know what I can do to resolve this and allow my machine to burn / copy disks? I know my optical drive is running fine because I booted from Ubuntu Live CD and was able to copy a disk fine. Thanks for any help!

Guys, Ran into a shock this morning when on one of my 2 lingering suse boxes updates replaced MySQL with MariaDB. After a brief bit of research, it seems that Monte (one of the MySQL devs) forked mysql into mariadb from the mysql code base in the 12/2009 timeframe when Oracle bought Sun to preserve MySQL and prevent against any funny business by Oracle in the future. According to statements made by Oracle, it is under an obligation to the EU to continue mysql largely in its present form and continue to enhance and make it freel available as part of the purchase. (See Oracle Statement): http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/press/042364 Suse evidently went with MariaDB and it was somewhat disconcerting to learn about the switch during an update. I put updated device-mapper/lvm2 2.02.64 and cryptsetup 1.1.1-rc2 packages to testing. These packages enable udev synchronization to finally get rid of all race conditions related to udev rules. I also cleaned up the PKGBUILDs massively and removed all static binaries and libraries from the packages. Before cryptsetup can move to core, we obviously need to wait for the final 1.1.1 release, and libpopt, libgcrypt and libgpg-error need to move from /usr/lib to /lib, so that initscripts are able to open encryption even if /usr isn't available yet. Pleae give feedback on these packages.

Guys, After update to 2.6.33.3-1, network-ups-tools (nut/upsd) starts, but cannot communicate with itself on localhost or across the network anymore. The default abs configuration was used so it isn't with one of my famous configure strings. To solve the problem, I dropped back to the abs network-ups-tools-2.4.1 PKGBUILD that I still had laying around and rebuilt against the new kernel and all is working as it should. Guys, This is a new one. I replaced one of my last suse boxes with arch at work a couple of days ago. I ssh'ed into the box tonight to get a few files and noticed my .xsession-errors file well over 300M - huh? -rw------- 1 david david 341482832 Apr 26 22:54 .xsession-errors Wanting to get a feel for what was up, I just tailf'ed and watched. Every few seconds it would dump a bunch of stuff to the file in somewhat of a loop of messages starting and/or ending with the 'invalid iterator .' line. I'm at a loss as to what is causing it. My rc.conf daemons setup is: DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network hal @netfs @ntpd @sshd @crond @avahi-daemon @mysqld !postfix @cups) with kdm being started in inittab: x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/kdm -nodaemon This was the first or second time kde4 was started to akonadi/nepomuk was still churning away, but had evidently completed several hours after I had left. I'm sure I have probably done this to myself, but I did a fairly standard install. I'm currently crunching the .xsession-errors file down with xz to see how small I can get it in case anybody wants to see it. Yeah I'm reopening this topic because I'm yet to find any good twitter client for KDE. I was using choqok till now and loved it but recently an update to it broke it, now it would show read tweets as unread when I quit and launch it again. Qwit isn't that much impressive because it doesn't show me number on the systray. So there isn't anything except the plasmoid, firefox-echofon or chrome-chromed bird ? If a package is requested I'll be happy to install it as long as it is reasonable and secure. You'll be free to run web applications in Python, Ruby, Perl, PHP, etc. You will automatically have a PostgreSQL account with the ability to create databases and if requested you will also be given your own LDAP tree. In addition you'll also have an email account that can be forwarded or accessed via IMAP or POP3. Feel free to compile software. There's also a whole slew of mathematical, statistical, and scientific software installed so feel free to run mathematical simulations etc. Each server has a 3GB /tmp partition of which most likely 2.8GB will be accessible to users who need the space temporarily (for compilation, etc.). I'm thinking right now that I'd like to allocate 256MB to each users to start off with and see how things work out from there. Uptime so far hasn't been fantastic but the servers have been undergoing a lot of changes lately so once everything is set I'm anticipating pretty good uptime. Basically all I'm asking for in return is that if you see a security hole or something stupid to let me know. I don't expect anyone to look for anything at all but if something happens to catch your attention please forward your concerns to me. Thanks. I am offering 24MB, 96MB, and 256MB accounts. Is there any suggestion on Arch Linux running Gnome 2.6.30 to improve the crisp / clearness of my fonts? I installed the latest available nVidia drivers & under 'Appearance' > 'Fonts' > 'Details', I show the following: * Resolution: 98 dots per square inch. * Smoothing: Subpixel (LCD) * Hinting: Slight * Subpixel Order; RGB It just never seems as clear and crisp when I compare side by side to Ubuntu or Windows 7. The font clarity is notable difference beween Arch and I would like to change this. Any help and or tips would be greatly appreciated! -Carlos

I'm working on a PKGBUILD for perl 5.12 and I notice that it's providing 20 some odd prerelease modules. I'm annoyed but I can't do anything about it. The general PKGBUILD guidelines say use the same as upstream unless there is a hyphen. so for a perl prerelease of 0.90_1 that guideline follows to release it as exactly the same. However 0.90_1 is == 0.90.1 and greater than 0.90 which it is a prerelease for on cpan. I'd like to suggest that for perl the official guideline be to make the version 0.90_pre1 Dist::Zilla a release automation tool also allows for using a format _TRIAL which is not yet popular on cpan but does happen should pacman add a _trial ? to the list of options? Hello, The idea is to implement package signing for Arch similar to rpm GPG package signing. Short description follows. Use case for developers: 1. Dev bulds package with f.e. "-sign" switch. 2. Dev enters passphrase. 3. makepkg builds the package and creates detached signature (now we have 2 files *.tar.xz and *.sig). 4. The two files togeather are distributed to the repos as package with signature. Package installation: Pacman additionally downloads the signature the signature file and verifies the package. Problems: 1. Where to store the package signature file? It is more convenient and logical to keep the package as a single file. Rpm packages uses binary format and the signatures are stored inside. 2. GPG key sharing. Rpm-like distros like fedora and RHL use a single key for signing all their stable packages, but I think their build system is centralised. Is it safe to share one key among all package developers? 3.. Implementation: 1. Add package verification suport in lipalpm (using gpgme or gpg executable as rpm does). 2. Add package signing in makepkg script 3. Patch pacman, add option to turn the package signing ON or Off. 4. Add support for signed package distribution if needed (see Problems #1) 5. Include Arch public pgp key in /etc/pacman.d/..(??) Discussion about this and also other ways for package signing(md5,..) are welcome! -- Alekss

Hi. It's been so long since I've bothered with dial-up that I'm not sure where to begin. But so that I can bring my laptop with me to check my mail etc... when I'm visiting my sister I need to get it working. Without messing up my 'working' broadband set-up. It looks like my best bet is to use wvdial. I'm hoping that the actual use will be as simple as unplugging the Ethernet cable from my laptop & plugging a 'live' modular phone cord into the laptops built in modem and following the instructions for using wvdial... My biggest concern is that everything I've found so far for getting Arch (or other Linux) to connect via dialup all appear to assume that there isn't an available broadband connection. (why else would I bother with dial-up after all...) But I want to confirm that setting up wvdial to use a dial-up ISP won't mess with reestablishing a broadband connection by simply reconnecting the 'live' Ethernet cable... Preferably without having to reboot. (Though I shudder to think what would happen if I goofed and plugged in the broadband during an active dial-up session, or initiated a dialup session without disconnecting the broadband.) http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Official_Arch_Linux_Install_Guide_Appen… says: "There are quite a few dialup related documents in the Arch Linux Wiki" But when I search the wiki for "dialup" it mostly lists in various languages, references to the install guide or the document "Dialup without a dialer HOWTO" But I like the idea that wvdialconf is supposed to automatically detect and configure for most modems. And I like that wvdial is supposed to be able to automatically detect pap vs chap etc and generally establish ppp with less requirement for me to micromanage the process... I searched the wiki for wvdial and all I got was instruction for configuring non-root access (which is the last thing I want. When/if connected via dialup, I'll be paying by the connected hour, so I don't want anyone I don't trust with the root password to be able to use it... I'm hoping that All I'll need to do is open a terminal window, su to a root shell, type wvdial Then open a browser or email client in another window. And to be able to quickly pull the plug on the connection (stopping the ISP's connect time clock) by switching back to the root shell that started wvdial and hitting ^C... (that is of course after a root shell runs wvdialconf and then edits the wvdial.conf to include the appropriate DNS server, user and password data etc...) Do I need to worry about wvdial and/or other dial-up ppp connection messing with the broadband Ethernet setup? Could someone point me at the URLs of the other 'dialup' related documents that are supposed to be in the Arch Linux Wiki (since searching for 'dialup' didn't help me)? I just installed a fresh system today with Gnome 2.6.30. It automatically installed Epiphany & Epiphany Web Bookmarks too. I would like to know if I remove both of these applications, will I effect Gnome or any of it's dependancies? I wont ever use Epiphany and I don't like useless applications lingering on my system? Is there a way to purge all of it's installation existance off my new machine without messing up Gnome?

Hi list, Since todays's update of the kernel (2.6.33.2 -> 2.6.33.3) my Dell inspiron 1012-9118 (new mini 10) netbook freezes on boot (after displaying "loading modules". I have to poweroff. It is an Atom N450 proc and an x86_64 Archlinux (up-to-date). Has anyone a similar problem?

[arch-general] Nvidia Driver Installed But Not Running

I recently installed the nvidia driver from 'Pacman' and rebooted. I have not since updated / upgraded the kernel. I notice that when I try and open my 'nVidia X Server Config' window and it tells me: You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file. I looked in /etc/X11/ directory and don't see xorg.conf file. Does anyone know how I can get my nVidia drivers working on Arch Linux? It installed fine however it's not running for some reason. -Carlos

This is an upstream kernel release, including security fixes. Packages will enter testing within the next hour. We had a gcc 4.4 -> 4.5 version bump, so the external modules are still compiled with 4.4, while the kernel is compiled with 4.5. If any external modules break (usual candidates are nvidia and aufs2), we will have to rebuild them with 4.5 as well. Please test this update thoroughly and sign off. Please provide feedback about the state of our nvidia and aufs2 (or other external) builds, so we know whether we require a rebuild.

Hi there, it seems that there are some problems with 2.6.33 and my thinkpad x200. The system randomly freezes completely. That means the mouse and the keyboard aren't working and the screen is just frozen. This is no Xorg crash and I do not really know if its a kernel panic, because the num led doesn't blink. There is absolutely nothing in the logs. Not even a single hint. So I downgraded to 2.6.32 and I had no freezes since yesterday. (But I cant say 100% that its ok, but i think so). I have a guess that it has something to do with wireless lan and battery running, but this is vague. Does anybody here has similar problems? I see there are some discussions going on the nvidia, KDE and arch forums about the performance of KDE 4.4 and latest nvidia driver, no results yet as I can see. My current setup with 190.53 works fast and snappy (no special xorg param); but updating to anything later drops performance by a factor, so I resisted upgrading nvidia. Now with the latest kernel update I cannot keep the 190.53 driver. Anyone have a solution for performance tweaking the latest KDE and nvidia combo? (I dont want to get too out of sync with the updates). Manne

Hi all, I'm proud to announce the April 2010 snapshot of my TalkingArch CD for blind users. This is more-or-less equivalent to the netinstall CD, with one major difference. The system provides spoken feedback as soon as you boot with the disk. I made some improvements to the project since the last release in the fall of 2009. First, I now provide an x86_64 image, as well as an image for i686. I learned that I could use qemu to build the 64-bit version. Hi, We have configured a set of machines to authenticate against an LDAP database. For some machines we do not want the users to login via their normal shell but some custom program runs for them. For example if some one tries to login to the smtp server via ssh, they get authenticated via LDAP but their default shell fo smtp should be say a program that sets up the email forwarding. More generally is there a way, by mucking around in the pam config or ldap config to ignore certain fields in the ldap database and fill it with some default values. Is there a way to achieve this apart from inelegent ways like copying the ldap database locally and creating a /etc/passwd file ? Best Regards ppk

I know users with multidevices have a serious problems with recent 1.4.0 update because they can only use either the scanner or the printer. I've just found this patch from Till Kapeter, the main OpenPrinting(foomatic) developer and Debian cups package maintainer. http://www.cups.org/str.php?L3357 I assume this could solve all outstanding issues. But sure this is not the current upstream way. And I cannot test it in any way because I don't have such a device. This is to show affected users a possible way to recompile our cups packages with this patch. If it really solves the trouble we might think if it should be done manually (we could put the patch into svn though). That would receive my vote. Or if we could trust Debian here and provide stuff that is not the upstream way but - if proved - solves all the trouble. I couldn't provide any help but doing building the packages.
