[arch-general] `journalctl -m` does not show /var/log/journal/remote/*

Hello, I have some remote journal from vps. It has come with systemd-journal{-remote,-upload}. ``` $ ls -l /var/log/journal/remote/ remote-10.8.0.2@b9e0664324d845afa9e8a4f9c17db0c8-0000000000000001-000513ba70b17fc3.journal remote-10.8.0.2@b9e0664324d845afa9e8a4f9c17db0c8-00000000000000d0-000513ba710c9056.journal remote-10.8.0.2@b9e0664324d845afa9e8a4f9c17db0c8-000000000000061e-000513bb668ea2c1.journal remote-10.8.0.2.journal remote-::ffff:10.8.0.2.journal ``` I can see these logs with `journalctl -d /var/log/journal/remote`. But when I'd tried with '-m' merge flag, it just showed localhost's journal. How could i see logs from both localhost and remote in realtime? Arch Linux systemd 219-5 Thanks. -- a

[arch-general] PATH variable not set in DE (GNOME)

Hello list, I'm currently experiencing something weird on a (less than regularly, but recently) updated Arch machine. After the last update some graphical programs that rely on the path variable being properly set stopped working. In particular one application uses exiftool, and works properly if started from the command line. However, if I open an image, the application complains that it can not find exiftool. So I checked in a terminal: $ which exiftool /usr/bin/vendor_perl/exiftool $ echo $PATH .../usr/bin/vendor_perl... BUT if I put the following code in a file #!/bin/sh env > /tmp/env and execute it via GNOME (double click the file and select 'run') and then check the PATH variable in /tmp/env it does _not_ include the perl directory. What is the correct way to set this variable? Hi :) if a dedicated version of a dependency is needed, some packages mention it, others don't. Firefox does not explicitly mention a version of libvpx $ pacman -Si firefox | grep On Depends On : [snip] libvpx [snip] but it needs a dedicated version $ firefox XPCOMGlueLoad error for file /usr/lib/firefox/libxul.so: libvpx.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Couldn't load XPCOM. ffmpeg does mentions that a dedicated version is needed $ pacman -Si ffmpeg | grep On Depends On : [snip] libvpx.so=2-64 [snip] IMO official packages should mention dedicated versions, since for users of a rolling release, there sometimes are good reasons to downgrade. I tried to build Firefox from ABS against the outdated version of libvpx that is needed and installed on my system, but that's another issue. Perhaps other packages are broken too and I get aware of it, at an inconvenient time. How can I figure out what packages depend on a dedicated version of another package? Regards, Ralf

Hi, Yesterday after upgrading my system I started having emacs segfaulting when started in daemon mode. This bug was weird because it didn't happen after an emacs update. The reason of the segfault was located in the glibc, and was due to the update to glibc-2.21-3. According to the explanation of Namarrgon, the bug is not a glibc one but a bug in the Intel CPU firmware: > TSX is defective on haswall and some broadwell CPUs and intel > disabled it via firmware, you weren't applying the firmware and > running into the bug > > lock-elision is part of the broken instruction The solution is quite simple: Follow instructions on the wiki to install the Intel Microcode [2]. The general procedure is: - Install `intel-ucode' - Update bootloader config to include it (e.g. grub: `# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg') - Restart && Enjoy On reddit [3] there was other people having the same issue but with different software: at least VLC for the the original poster. I'm sharing this here because the issue is not evident to find. The bug was not present with previous versions of glibc in my case (I never had the microcode installed). I hope this could help other people to identify the problem if they encounter it. Maybe an official announcement could be useful if there is other people having this issue with the new glibc? I'll let devs and TUs decide this. Hi, this line in fstab $ grep tmp /etc/fstab tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid,size=3G 0 0 usually is commented out. One time it was needed, when building a kernel failed. Today building Firefox failed. I'll try with 3G again, instead of half of the memory (1.9G), after a restart, to safely clean tmp first. I suspect that if the RAM size doesn't fit, swap isn't used?! [arch-general] Updating multiple Arch OS's at once

Salutations, I wrote a script to update some USB OS's of mine per instance. The idea's that multiple instances can be run. The script is located at : <https://github.com/bluerider/mkportarch/blob/master/update-usb> However, I get the following error : ------------ :: Synchronizing package databases... error: failed to update core (unable to lock database) error: failed to update extra (unable to lock database) error: failed to update community (unable to lock database) error: failed to synchronize any databases error: failed to init transaction (unable to lock database) error: could not lock database: File exists if you're sure a package manager is not already running, you can remove /var/lib/pacman/db.lck ------------ Those are separate chroot environments so they wouldn't be sharing /var/lib/pacman/db.lck. Callee RC: NS_ERROR_FACTORY_NOT_REGISTERED (0x80040154)" If I run Virtualbox in a terminal I get "Qt WARNING: libpng warning: iCCP: known incorrect sRGB profile" already before I try to start a guest. After some WWW inquiries I disconnected USB of an iPad and of an external WD from the computer and rebooted to clean /tmp, but this didn't solve the issue. Then I tried some Voodoo by running $ sudo mv /boot/initramfs-linux-rt-lts.img /boot/initramfs-linux-rt-lts.img.bak $ sudo mv /boot/initramfs-linux-rt-lts-fallback.img /boot/initramfs-linux-rt-lts-fallback.img.bak $ sudo mkinitcpio -p linux-rt-lts and a reboot, but nothing changed. I continued doing nonsense by downgrading systemd to the version I used the last time running Virtualbox. The remove was needed for the downgrade $ sudo rm /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/remote-fs.target libsystemd (219-5 -> 217-8) systemd (219-5 -> 217-8) systemd-sysvcompat (219-5 -> 217-8) lib32-systemd (218-1 -> 217-1) in addition I restored initramfs $ sudo rm initramfs-linux-rt-lts-fallback.img initramfs-linux-rt-lts.img $ sudo mv initramfs-linux-rt-lts.img.bak initramfs-linux-rt-lts.img $ sudo mv initramfs-linux-rt-lts-fallback.img.bak initramfs-linux-rt-lts-fallback.img and rebooted. Despite all the Voodoo Virtualbox still fails and all cats and chickens in the neighbourhood are still alive. Arch is up to date [2]. Any hints are welcome. I have been using Archlinux for about seven years and Linux as an OS for more than twenty years and I am still learning new ways of doing things. eg: rankmirrors from this discussion was something new that I learnt. Sure you have to search the wiki and the man pages and the HOWTOs to gain information but when all else fails ask on the lists. Also don't forget the forums, these can be heavy but there are gems of informationin ther as well. Always remember the only stupid question is the one that remains unasked. Regards John
