[arch-general] What dirs are good to put in a tmpfs?

Hi, I have 7 GiB of ram but I'm only using 300 MiB, so I thought I would put stuff into it to speed up my system. I installed anything-sync-daemon but I have no idea what to sync. Is there a tool that can tell which dirs are being used the most? I'd rather not guess and benchmark, I don't have the patience for that. What are common dirs that would benefit from being in ram?

[arch-general] How to safe configs to another path than ~

Hi, how can I safe configurations to another path, instead of using ~? I need this for audio applications, to restore different audio sessions and to get different profiles for some applications. If I run HOME=/home/rocketmouse/alt_profiles/1 xfce4-terminal --maximize by xfce4-terminal the path gets completely ignored, all settings still are stored to /home/rocketmouse and not to the path /home/rocketmouse/alt_profiles/1. If I run HOME=/home/rocketmouse/alt_profiles/1 xfce4-terminal --maximize by the Xfce panel launcher I get "Failed to execute child process "HOME=/home/rocketmouse/alt_profiles/1" (No such file or directory)". If I run HOME=/home/rocketmouse/alt_profiles/1 gedit something is saved to /home/rocketmouse/alt_profiles/1, but it doesn't effect gedit. If I change settings, the settings are only used if I run gedit if I run HOME=/home/rocketmouse/alt_profiles/1 gedit gedit starts using it's defaults. The only good, t doesn't use the settings saved to /home/rocketmouse , as it does if I launch it by gedit. Regards, Ralf

Hello, I'm wondering, after some googling, how is the best way in archlinux to manage dns zone and data in openldap directly ? I read about powerdns but the ldap part seems to be unmaintained. So, what is the best way to use ldap with dns on Arch ? Thanks by advance, Olivier.

[arch-general] Can`t playback other sounds (ie flash, xmms) while on a skype call

Folks seems skype and pulseaudio are blocking all other sound outputs while I`m on a call. When I turn off the skype call the other sounds start to work again. I could find no logs to provide you more info but I will happy to show them as long you point me out what you need. Regards, Victor

[arch-general] Archlinux ISO signing

Hi, One of the ways to verify an archlinux iso image is via its gpg signature. However, doing this on an atom/geode system with < 1GiB of RAM is definitely not fun. And I suppose it also takes noticeable time to sign, even on an opteron/xeon server. Is there a particular reason why the images themselves are signed as opposed to only their checksum files? For instance, Fedora provides sha256sums with inline sigs [1], and verifying image checksum + checksum file signature is _much_ less CPU and memory demanding than verifying signature of an entire image. Arch kernel: smpboot: Booting Node 0 Processor 1 APIC 0x1 CPU1 is up smpboot: Booting Node 0 Processor 2 APIC 0x2 CPU2 is up smpboot: Booting Node 0 Processor 3 APIC 0x3 CPU3 is up ACPI: Waking up from system sleep state S3 ACPI: \_SB_.PCI0.LPC_.EC__.BAT1: docking ACPI: \_SB_.PCI0.LPC_.EC__.BAT1: Unable to dock! System info: ThinkPad X230i, Linux 3.9.9-1-ARCH, systemd 204-3, I have tried to set Handle{SuspendKey,HibernateKey,LidSwitch} all to ignore, but I still get the same error message. Any other solution to make that message disappear? Regards.

[arch-general] Arch Linux on servers?

Hi all, I'm writing a feature about Arch for Linux Format, a UK-based newsstand Linux magazine. I've been using Arch myself for a while for testing new app releases, and it's brilliant for that purpose. I'm still left wondering though: who uses it on production servers? I mean, the distro's overall simplicity and trimmed-down base installation are plus points here, but surely a rolling release poses problems. After installation you just want security and critical bug fix updates for software, and not major version bumps, right? www.archserver.org seems to be on hold, and I've also seen this page: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Enhancing_Arch_Linux_Stability which has some useful tips. But it'd be interesting to hear from people running Arch on production servers, how well it works for them and what (if any) problems they've faced. Thanks! Mike

[arch-general] Can't store passwords with subversion 1.8.0

Hello everyone, since the update to subversion 1.8.0 i can't make subversion store passwords. It asks for the password with every command i execute. I also tried to tell subversion explicitely to store passwords and to store them in plaintext with the following settings in the servers config file: store-passwords = yes store-plaintext-passwords = yes But that didn't do the trick, either. So did anyone encounter the same problem or am i just doing something wrong? Thanks in advance. Oliver
