The caution was: "Use 1M to restrict your speed so that it writes properly" which I never actually understood, but never had a problem with. Only recently have I seen the suggestion to use 4M, but always with 1M as the fallback option if it doesn't work. -- - Toyam

[arch-general] Updating KDE whilst logged in causes loss of background wallpaper image

There is a KDE bug that has been around for some time which is in the upstream report at https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=300708 which seems to be that if you update KDE (as in today's update to KDE 4.10.4-1) whilst being logged in to KDE you can lose your background wallpaper image. Updating from a text console without being logged in to the graphical desktop does not cause the issue to happen. There is a workaround in the first comment in the report link above in case anyone gets caught by this. -- mike c

[arch-general] /bin symlink breaking fetchmail

Hey all, In short, the latest upgrade seems to have borked fetchmail: fetchmail: Error writing to MDA: Broken pipe Deleting the /bin symlink and creating a /bin directory containing only a symlink /bin/sh pointing to /usr/bin/bash, makes fetchmail work again. Running `strace -vf fetchmail` reveals that the execve("/bin/sh"...) call returns EPERM. I'm well and truly stumped. I'm using courier-mta as my mda, but that shouldn't be relevant. [arch-general] Crashing in libreoffice on certain .odp (Impress) files

Yesterday I used libreoffice to present a lecture from 3-4pm. Today morning I tried to open the exact same file and got immediate crashing. 2 of my lecture slides have this problem, 2 do not. In between, I updated to [testing] (this is a new laptop) and did quite a few installs, but none (except the big [testing] update for the /usr/bin move) seem related. See [1]. I have tried deleting ~/.config/libreoffice, to no avail. No error logs that I can see on the terminal (does libreoffice spit out errors anywhere?). Backups of the lecture slides (before small modifications which I may/not have made also exhibited the same behaviour. Googling shows various unrelated (I think) problems which seem to already be fixed in the latest libreoffice, mainly solved by deleting the .config/libreoffice folder (which I've tried). Hey folks! I updated my PKGBUILD file and submitted it to the Arch User Repository, if anyone is interested. It is the 2.5.1 version of Rivendell https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/rivendell/ Let me know if you are having any issues. For now, I am having trouble with rdcartslots: it will not run at all. Maybe someone can help me out. I have not done thorough testing, but most everything else should work correctly. -- Sébastien Leblanc

Curious if these colorization effects are aware whether terminal pacman is running in has light or dark background and adjust accordingly - or do they rely on some other setting to accommodate? Thanks for any insight. Gene

Dear ArchGeneral List, First of all, congratulations for another brave step forward with the /*bin -> /usr/bin move. All my Arch boxes upgraded with no pain. But I've noticed that there has been some discussion about moving /usr/local/sbin -> /usr/local/bin. Beware! There are packages out there that are distributed as tarballs and install themselves on /usr/local. I don't know how frequent they are, but I've seen them. And if they happen to contain any file in /usr/local/sbin, when untarring, it will silently overwrite the symbolic link with the real directlry breaking any application that depends on it, and making future upgrades to `filesystem` impossible. Yes, it can be fixed simply running tar with the -h (--dereference) flag, but who will remember that? Just my 0.02€. Best regards. -- Rodrigo
