[arch-general] courier-maildrop package failed installation

I tried that delivery agent and authgen library failed to install and later I couldn't get it started. Fortunately procmail posed no similar problems on installation. Is courier-maildrop not supported for amd64 k8 athelon machines? If that's the case that would explain this failure. Hello, I've just had a minor hiccup, because one of the packages updated in my pacman -Syu this morning substituted a version I had tweaked the ABS way. Nothing serious, as I say, and wholly my fault, but yet I was wondering: Would it be possible/make sense to have pacman inform us whenever it is going to substitute a package that has been ABS'd? [arch-general] Wanted: advice dual-booting Arch and Windows 7 on new laptop

Hi everyone TL;DR: I've just bought a new HP Pavilion g6-2103ax, and I'm having difficulties trying to figure out how I can dual-boot it with Windows 7 (which was preinstalled). Windows *still* defaults to using MBR partitions, and even though the system is UEFI, HP have used some trickery somewhere to make it boot from BIOS. To make matters worse, the disk table already has four partitions: SYSTEM: 199 MB NTFS Windows C drive: ~ 450 GB NTFS HP Recovery partition: 18.5 GB NTFS HP_TOOLS: 99 MB FAT32 The SYSTEM partition seems to contain the Windows bootloader, or something along those lines. The HP Recovery partition contains the software necessary to do a factory reset, and HP_TOOLS contains some UEFI applications (some system diagnostic things). C drive is Windows. What I was thinking of doing was shrinking C drive, and deleting the recovery partition to make space for Arch. But on my first attempt, parted bricked the table, and whilst I was able to recover it, Windows refused to boot. I obtained recovery disks to restore it, but they are completely non-interactive so cannot be used to rescue Windows, only reset to factory initial state. Due to the arrangement of the partitions, I don't think creating an Extended partition will work (they need to be the last one in the table, don't they?), and while I've read GRUB2 can use /boot in LVM, I'm not sure whether this will work. Also, I've never used GRUB2 before, and its configs look formidable compared to Syslinux. Ideally I'd switch to GPT, but Windows needs to be booted in UEFI mode for this, but I have no idea how to enable this as there's neither a switch in the BIOS settings, nor settings in Windows. Can anyone advise me on how I could overcome these issues? Has anyone had any experience with new HP g6 models?

[arch-general] Bind mount /dev from fstab with systemd

I've been trying to (r)bind mount /dev from fstab and it is failing for some reason that I can't figure out. I have tried to mount it on demand, only when accessed, since the chroot where I need it is not used very often, to try and achieve that I've tried the following line in fstab: /dev /path/to/chroot/dev none rbind,noauto,x-systemd.automount 0 0 This didn't work, trying 'ls /path/to/chroot/dev' seems to hang forever and the output from journalctl says: systemd[1]: Job dev.device/start timed out. systemd[1]: Job extra-chroot-centos-dev.mount/start failed with result 'dependency'. systemd[1]: Job dev.device/start failed with result 'timeout'. I have also tried mounting it on boot using: /dev /path/to/chroot/dev none rbind 0 0 Which also doesn't work and makes the boot process stop, the machine is still responsive to ctrl-alt-del and reboots cleanly but there is no indication of why it stops. Bind mounting /proc and /sys when accessed works fine, also mounting manually with 'mount --rbind /dev /path/to/chroot/dev' works just fine, I am out of ideas and google doesn't know either, any tips or pointers are welcome. -- Mauro Santos

Folks after trying to update today I got the following error: util-linux and eject are in conflict According to this: http://mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-dev-public/2012-July/023320.html I could just go yes but pacman suggests me to answer no. I've found nothing on the boards nor webpage. Have anyone had this situation? Regards, vfbsilva

[arch-general] Systemd and startx

So far I am only testing how systemd behaves in my system and what changes I need to do before I permanently make the switch. So far the first problem, which doesn't seem to be covered in the wiki, forum or google searches, is that if I switch to a tty after starting X I get just a blank screen. I also get a blank screen and no prompt after I logout from the DE. The conditions that seem to trigger the problem are: I don't use any login managers so I use startx to start my DE of choice (xfce). I have increased the number of available ttys as described here [1] and after booting everything seems to be working fine, since I have the expected number of ttys and I can login at each one of them. Getting local permissions was also taken care of by following [2], for testing purposes I use 'startx -- vt1 &> xlog.log' and I've confirmed that it works as expected. The problem: After starting X, if I switch to any of the ttys with ctrl-alt-f* I get only a blank screen, this includes the ttys that have not been used to start X. After logging out of the DE I get a blank screen at all ttys, including the one used to start X. The machine is otherwise still responsive. Any clues, tips or pointers on how to get this to work are welcome. Hi, Occasionally (while using google chrome) my X server crashes completely and takes me back to the tty login. Examining the journal entries reveals the following highlighted in red: Sep 23 17:03:33 myarchbox kernel: [drm] nouveau 0000:00:05.0: fail ttm_validate Sep 23 17:03:34 myarchbox kernel: [drm] nouveau 0000:00:05.0: validate vram_list Sep 23 17:03:34 myarchbox kernel: [drm] nouveau 0000:00:05.0: validate: -12 I am using the nouveau driver for my Nvidia graphics card. The problem is difficult to reproduce as it happens quite randomly - for instance I might be opening some particular website and it will crash. If I insist on opening the same website again it might crash a second time but it will work the third time or so. Is this a universal experience of using nouveau on Nvidia cards or is it something that is only afflicting my computer? [arch-general] sleep + lid events + kde => new problem

Using fully updated testing repo - starting 'recently' - I notice that lid close no longer sleeps my laptop. Kde power is configured to sleep on lid close. If i click the menu and choose sleep manually - it sleeps fine - and subsequently wakes fine on lid-open. I can confirm with this little shell loop (left running and then close lid and reopen) that acpi shows lid is indeed closed: while [[ 1 == 1 ]] > do > cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/*/state > sleep 1 > done state: open state: open state: open state: open state: closed state: closed state: closed state: closed state: open state: open So, it -seems- as if lid-event is not being passed along for some reason to the (kde) power management - or not being listened to. I have not yet switched to systemd - and I'm not sure which process is responsible for such events. It still happens with 3.5.4 kernel if that makes any difference. It is a W520 lenovo laptop. Anyone else notice similar - or can offer suggestions? Thanks. gene/
