[arch-general] Repo Structure - Pool Dir

Hello. Currently I see that there are some packages in /archlinux/extra/os/i686/ and some symlinks to ../../../pool/packages/. I was hoping a dev would be able to answer the following the questions? Eventually, will all packages (from core/extra/community) end up in pool? Repos like multilib, gnome-unstable, kde-unstable will not end up, right? Thanks, ~pyther

Page "Local mirros" was removed from wiki by this reason: ----- It is generally frowned upon to create a local mirror due the bandwidth that is required. There is not a good reason to create a local mirror, since one of the alternatives below will likely meet your needs. ----- I think it's very useful ability, and why this page was removed... i don't know. It's silly. If anyone else think it must be return - maybe we should do it? P.S. A lot of guys agreed with me this morning, so i think many people want this article back. --

[arch-general] How to detect when a package is removed from a group in pacman

Hi, recently bin86 was removed from base-devel group but the unique way I know to see this change is manually reading the pkg changelog in the arch site. The problem is simple, how to detect this change in pacman? For example, after a gnome upgrade, if a new package is added to gnome group I can do: pacman -S --needed gnome to install the missing package. But if a package is removed? How can I remove this package that doesn't belong to a group anymore? I hope you understand the question. Why not add metapackages (as for kde) for base, base-devel, gnome and gnome-extra that doesn't have this problem?

[arch-general] There's no need for acpid

Hi there, I discussed with someone else in an IRC channel that actually I have to use acpid for laptop-mode-tools if I want to have settings changed when I plug in AC. Well, actually there is no need of acpid for this. A simply shell script can do the same: #!/bin/bash while read event; do case "$event" in ac_adapter*) /usr/sbin/laptop_mode auto > /dev/null 2>&1 ;; esac done < /proc/acpi/event So I put this script unter /usr/sbin (or something else, whatever) and start it in laptop-mode-tools initscript. Works perfectly and so I don't need acpid just for this little thing. Anyway isn't acpid a bit much for such simple things?
