[arch-general] Viewing Actual Kernel Release Version

I noticed today when doing a system upgrade via Pacman, it wanted to upgrade my kernel and install 'kernel26-2.6.32.7-1' however I wanted to know how this version differs from my current version kernel. When I run 'uname -r' command, I just get "2.6.32-ARCH". Can someone please tell me how I can find my exact kernel version & lastly - what happens to the old kernel? Does it get removed?

[arch-general] AUR / Official Repo version problem

So I've been having a strange problem on my computer with updates. The xulrunner package in the official repos didn't want to update because firefox-branded (from the AUR) depends on an old version, but firefox-branded won't update because it needs a newer version of xulrunner. I got it to work by removing firefox-branded, updating, then installing it again, but it's a complicated solution and entirely not obvious what's going wrong. The error message made it sound like there was just no update for xulrunner available: :: Starting full system upgrade... resolving dependencies... looking for inter-conflicts... error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies) :: firefox-branded: requires xulrunner=1.9.1.7 Not sure how this could be made easier, but I thought I'd mention how confusing it is. -Brendan Long

[arch-general] Dark Red & Gold KDE4 Theme - brighten your desktop for a bit (DR - you might even like it :-)

Guys, I never thought red and gold would work on a kde4 desktop, but I think it looks great. While I figure out how to package them and where to put them, I could use some feedback on whether they need any more work. Below are links to the RedGold theme, a background to go with it, and an emerald theme as well. All three of the gold themes (BlackGold, DeepBlueGold, DarkRedGold), work best with either Nitrogen, Ozone or Oxygen 'window & style' decorations. Bespin works very well as a window decoration for all three, but the Bespin 'style' is very finicky with the Red for some reason. If you use a 'style' other than Ozone, Nitrogen, Oxygen or Bespin, your theme color will look black instead of Red or Blue due to how faint the colors are in the color definition. For the best results, 'uncheck' the option to blend the title bar with theme colors in the Appearance -> Window system settings. The charcoal titlebar works well into the theme. You can also use Crystal, Modern, Laptop or Glow window decorations and they will look pretty good as well. [arch-general] A bug in compiz-core

Hi, I was trying to configure compiz and kde, when I ran fusion-icon on the terminal, it told me that /usr/lib/compiz/libpng.so.14 could not be loaded as required by compiz. But I found /usr/lib/compiz/libpng.so and symlinked to libpng.so.14 that fixed the problem. But is this a bug to be reported ?? [arch-general] Recent update to php-apache breaks LAMP stack.

Hi, I'd recently updated php, mysql, and php-apache packages to following versions: php 5.3.1-4 mysql 5.1.43-1 php-apache 5.3.1-4 After update my existing webapps started showing error: Unable to connect to database, with nothing changed on the webapps side. After assuming that recent update cause them to break, I downgraded all related packages, and then upgraded them one-by-one. Following is the final combination which worked for me: php 5.3.1-4 mysql 5.1.43-1 php-apache 5.3.1-3 If anyone also exhibits this behaviour, then I can report this as bug. [arch-general] Mounting tmpfs on /dev. Why?

Hi there. I'm newbie in Archlinux and I have another lame question. Recently, I've found that Arch mounts tmpfs on /dev. And, as you may see, this makes big problem to some applications. I see: "none on /dev type tmpfs" in the output of mount program. This mount is not placed in /etc/fstab. So, I think this is done by some of init scripts. I've looked at the /etc/rc.d folder and grep "mount" `find`. But nothing interesting found. I really don't want to mount tmpfs on /dev. How to don't do it? Thanks for patience.

[arch-general] Video Resolution, Grub2 and Kernel 2.6.32

When I installed grub2 a short while back, I was using the kernel 2.6.31.6 and I enjoyed a full screen of 1024.768 32K color depth. I followed the steps outlined here <http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB2#Setting_the_framebuffer_resolution> to the letter and all was great. But when the kernel26 package upgraded to 2.6.32.2, This functionality broke. I ended up having to remove the video related stuff from my grub line to get my system to boot. When I say this didn't work anymore, basically my system wouldn't boot and I end up with a blank screen showing. When I experimented by removing the insmod statement and using vga=790 by itself, the best I get is a 30 line display with 80 columns width. Anyone know what changed? It would appear that we may need to update the wiki page with new info for grub2 and video resolution.

I noticed that when I login to my new Arch server & attempt to use commands like 'ls' or 'ls -l', I have no color. It's just white text so it's hard to visually differentiate the difference between files and directories. I did read the Wiki below which advises me to modify my ~/.bashrc which comes from /etc/skel/.bashrc however when I am logged in as root, I want to have this colored output feature. I checked and my /root directory has no .bashrc file. When I attempt to create one & add the parameters I have in my ~/.bashrc, I then log out and log back in as root but still have no color. How do I make this system wide? When I modify my regular user's .bashrc file, I do get my desired color output but I can't figure out how to achieve this for 'root'. http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Color_Bash_Prompt
