[arch-general] kernel 2.6.31-4, conky and hwmon issue

Hallo all. here is my problem: last week when kernel was upgraded to 2.6.31, it broke conky and hwmon on some of the machines. So i opened FS#16584 and it was resolved in an update of conky . However it broke conky and hwmon on another set of machines as reported in this thread http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=82231 But as latest reported by Beini in FS#16650, the updated hwmon patch should work on both set of machines. Which is evident as me and another member with similar configuration have reported success in the ongoing thread. But the other side has yet to report anything. So i think that is blocking the update of conky. So in this situation, i am asking for your information and feedback about this issue, if you happen to be one of the affected users.

[arch-general] How to get libasound_module_pcm_jack.so

Any idea where to find libasound_module_pcm_jack.so or how to compile alsa to get it? It's probably of no use to the majority of arch users but it's a module that has to be enabled by hand in asoundrc anyway, so I think it wouldn't hurt to make it available for those that find it useful. Philipp

[arch-general] Can't Install GRUB on a GPT Formatted Disk

I'm trying to get GRUB installed on a pure GPT disk (I didn't know it was best to make a hybrid MBR/GPT), and it looks like a patch was added back in March 2008 for this (http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/9864) but it continues to fail. My layout is as follows on the drive: /dev/sda1 /boot /dev/sda2 LVM system_vg /dev/sdb1 LVM data_vg # lvs LV VG Attr LSize home_lv data_vg -wi-ao 500.00GB root_lv system_vg -wi-ao 64.00GB swap_lv system_vg -wc-ao 2.00GB var_lv system_vg -wi-ao 12.00GB # grub grub> device (hd0) /dev/sda grub> root (hd0,0) Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0xee grub> setup (hd0) Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition grub> quit Any thoughts? -- Aaron "ElasticDog" Schaefer

Guys, I don't usually pass on widgets and stuff, but this superkaramba theme surprised me when I opened it and the Arch kde icon was looking back at me. Somebody has taken the time to personalize the theme by grabbing a disto specific icon and adding a finihsing touch. Guys, After picking around in the logs, one recurring error seems to be: FATAL: Module fbcon not found. What provides the "fbcon" module? I presume it some framebuffer connect module. Listmates, After the latest kernel update, I cannot start X for the Arch box I have that has an onboard intel graphics card. (Dell 280GX sff) The errors are: 02:31 nirvana:/srv/www/download/Archlinux/bugs/supersff> grep "(EE)" Xorg.0.log (WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown. (EE) Failed to load module "i810" (module does not exist, 0) (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0) Obviously it is complaining about the intel i810 and framebuffer modules. Why? This box has always worked fine with the 915 module. Guys, I almost had a heartattack tonight when I updated my laptop and X died. I though "oh no, here we go again -- the intel story all over again..." After update I did a clean restart and the first thing I noticed was the screen resolution changed (twice) during the boot process: (1) First few lines ~ 640x480 regular text (2) Arch console splash displayed, looked like 1024x768 ::process a [result] ::process b [result] ::process c [result] (3) The something switched again and right justified the results: ::process d [result] ::process e [result] ::process f [result] Then when Runlevel 5 was reached and X started it hung and looked like it was frying my screen (started out blackscreened and then became progressively brighter until ctrl+alt+F1 to drop to console). I killed kdm (initially using kdm3) with /etc/rc.d/kdm3 stop and confirmed all was dead with ps ax | grep kdm. Thinking it could have been a problem with kdm3 versus kdm, I tried to start kdm with /etc/rc.d/kdm start -- same result. X hung, same frying screen look ctrl+alt+F1 to drop to console. Crap! Ok, then I decided to try starting X without an xorg.conf to see if the defaults would work. /etc/rc.d/kdm start -- same result. X hung, same frying screen look ctrl+alt+F1 to drop to console. Alright, I killed everything off and tried the kde3 greeter with /etc/rc.d/kdm3 start -- Ha! It worked (I'm typing now) Whatever is going on with the modules moving into the kernel, etc. there are some very nasty unexpected consequences for users. I am glad I was able to get the kde3 greeter to start X, but I suspect that if I only had kde4 installed, I would be dead-in-the-water. To be honest, I don't even know what driver is being used at the moment (I haven't had time to check. I thought I would get this post out in case some other radeonhd user is freaking out after update). I have captured the following information and I'm making it available to the devs if anyone is interested in what happened here. This laptop is an old Toshiba P205d (Radeon RS690M graphics card).
