[arch-general] linux kernel 4.15.4-1 un-bootable

Ran into a weird issue today. I upgraded a bunch of packages, including the kernel to v4.15.4-1 (from 4.15.3-1). But for some reason the system was un-bootable. The boot process would get part-way through, then the booting screen would suddenly start showing its text on a green background (rather than black) and it would freeze. It took some jumping through hoops, but I was eventually able to boot to a chroot environment, upgrade to a newer kernel (v4.15.5-1) and suddenly the problem magically went away and my machine boots fine. Anyone have any idea what might have happened here? I'm assuming it was a bad kernel build, but I'd like to know for sure. I didn't see any recent bugs under the "linux" kernel package that matched what I was seeing. Thanks, DR

[arch-general] After 4.15.4, Arch dhcpd clients on LAN get new IP, but zone update fails (server - bind w/dynamic update)

All, Not sure if this is kernel or dhcpcd related, but after update to 4.15.4 tonight ArchLinux clients on LAN receive new IP from server (which have not changed in 4-years before), and server DNS zones are not updated, but instead retain the old IP. The error is a general "Has an address record but no DHCID, not mine." (which may be a holdover from an earlier bind failure) Regardless, this has never before caused dhcp4 to issue a new address while retaining the old in the zone files for any Arch client in the 50 or so kernel updates before 4.15.4. (and this was consistent for each Arch box after the 4.15.4 kernel update) Take it for what it is, just be aware if you are admining a remote Arch box that gets its address via dhcp, you may end up with a new address while the old is still reported by nslookup. Just strange... No replay necessary, unless you have an idea of what changed between 4.15.3 and 4.15.4 that may cause this behavior. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

[arch-general] What files are tipically in /usr/local/share?

Hi, I've just accidentally deleted my '/usr/local/share' folder. This happened while I was creating custom copies of launchers from /usr/share/applications. Now, if I understand it correctly, the '/usr/local' directory should only contain files created by the user. In fact, I checked other subdirectories (bin, etc, games, include, lib, man, sbin, src) and they are all empty, except for a couple files I manually created in 'sbin' and 'lib'. But, as I was almost sure that the 'share' dir specifically was _not_ empty before I started messing with it, I just ran 'pacman -Qkq' and it reported '/usr/local/share/man' missing. This was promptly fixed by reinstalling the 'filesystem' package. But this has me wondering if there was something more important which resides there. Perhaps something generated by an application or script. None of my backups include that directory, so I'm afraid this makes me impossible to check for myself, other than installing/configuring everything from scratch. Can you guys clarify this for me? In case it's relevant, my desktop stack has Cinnamon, LightdDM, networkManager, Samba and other less important packages on top of a standard Arch Linux setup. Thank you, Marc

After having run arch-chroot /mnt /usr/bin/bash one of the things I do is to run alsactl store. alsactl store returns error 125 /var/lib/alsa/asound.state no such file or directory. Certainly there's no such file since when alsa was run before arch-chroot got run on system boot /mnt/var/lib/alsa directory was empty having just run pacstrap on /mnt. So since this is supposed to work, could it be arch-chroot script fails to collect and pass along enough of the right environment information to its chrooted environment for alsactl store to run? All, I use vitrualbox-bin (AUR) along with ext-oracle extension pack referenced in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VirtualBox#Extension_pack. I have followed the addition of the guest-addition kernel modules to the 4.15 kernel, but I do not know how to handle that addition regarding what changes are needed in my arch guests. Specifically, since the guest additions are included in 4.15, but not in LTS, how do I disable the load the guest additions modules when booting the VM on 4.15, but not when booting LTS? [arch-general] Why does Arch still use the GTK2 version of xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin?

Hello, I apologize if this is not the appropriate place for starting such a discussion, but I felt I needed to voice my opinion. I think the GTK3 build of the Whisker Menu plugin is very stable and find it very odd that Arch still uses the antiquated GTK2 build of the plugin. The GTK3 build will add many noticeable improvements for end users, including better support for desktop themes. Replacing the old version will also make it easier to ditch an old toolkit like GTK2 from our systems.

[arch-general] Tips for a stable GNOME Shell?

Good evening, I am writing here since I do believe people here might have found solutions already to my problems. Sadly, I am the problem, as I love GNOME Shell (ops). Jokes aside, I love its interface and behaviour; although, it is really hard to use it on a real-context basis for me. What it happens is that if I execute RAM-consuming applications, GNOME Shell behaves really badly, swapping a lot with memory. The usual scenario is me trying to send some e-mails, while I have Visual Studio Code and Firefox for some coding; usually, this leads to huge slowdown, up to making the system unusable. This doesn't happen when using a GNOME-friendly i3 session, executing by far many more RAM-consuming applications (such as running Franz with multiple services, Telegram Desktop and others). I got some good boosts from the following actions: - Disabling almost all the Shell extensions, except for my 'essential' ones. - Using a X11 session instead of Wayland - Tweaking swap and VFS parameters (there is a web article referenced in the ArchWiki which is really good) So I have two questions: 1. Am I nuts? Did I do something really bad to my GNOME Shell without knowing that? How could I repair my setup? 2. If this is it (GNOME Shell is TOO heavy), is there any lightweight DE that offers something similar? I would need at least the search within apps and files for sure. [arch-general] Virtualbox under KDE plasma

Hello, I recently tried KDE plasma after 5.12 update and it is running smooth. However I am experiencing two problems with virtualbox. 1. Virtualbox applications do not start unless QT_QPA_PLATFORM is set to xcb. Under plasma wayland session it is set to wayland. 2. When a VM is launched, if it is maximized with Host-F, it loses all keyboard/mouse interaction and has to be killed from the plasma session. Anybody has seen this? Should I report it upstream?
