All, This isn't new, I've seen it for the past few weeks or so, but on boot, dbus throws a journal error that avahi service cannot be found? Hi, why does a package from official repositories mentions what version of a dependency is required? Since the actually optional dependency pulseaudio by upstream often is required as a hard dependency, for no sane reason, I installed a dummy package years ago, to workaround time consuming workarounds. Today I tried to install something and part of the dependency chain of stuff I don't need is pulseaudio-bluetooth. It doesn't matter, I'm willing to install pulseaudio-bluetooth, instead of building another dummy package or rebuilding something. Why does the package pulseaudio-bluetooth dedicated mentions pulseaudio=10.0-3? Why not simply mentioning "pulseaudio" without the version? Note! I'm not asking anybody not to do it like this! I only want to know the reason for mentioning a version of a dependency, for packages from official repositories, since I don't know any reason. IOW I only want to learn. [arch-general] Recent updates cause ssh sessions to disconnect/reauth repeatedly for ~20 seconds?

All, After updates in the past day or two, I see new behavior for my idle ssh connections that authorize as normal, but then are systematically disconnected forcing a reauth at regular intervals of one-per second, for about 20 seconds. Can anyone else confirm this as new behavior? At least it stops after about 20 iterations and seems to settle down. I have connections on a LAN that may be up for 3-4 days at a time. [arch-general] Strange time sync problem.

Hi all, I have an arch machine with mate as the desktop. I am using orca all works well, but 1 problem that is driving me crazy is time zone syncrinization. If I get time with orca t, I here the time 4 hours ahead of my local time. For example, If I press orca t for time, it will tell me that it is 15:-01. It is speaking in 24 hour time rather than 12 hour. It is about 11 am eastering at time of writing this message. I am wondering if there is a way to fix this. I installed gnome control center and set it to sync timezone info and to use am-pm but the is not being used dispite the changed. How can I fix this? Thanks. I tried tz select, but not sure whare the file is to set globalble. hanks. Matthew

Hi, I followed https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg#Display_size_and_DPI . I measured the screen size of the LCD and the CRT manually and in addition I calculated the screen size of the LCD. FWIW manual measuring provided the same result as the calculation. [arch-general] syslinux menu, dualhead issue

Hi, yesterday I connected a LCD monitor LG 24MB56HQ-B by HDMI and a CRT monitor by VGA to my Computer with an Intel HD Graphics of a Celeron G1840. IIRC (it's just a day ago :D) if I turned on the computer both monitors showed the BIOS as well as the syslinux menu at the same time. However, important is what happens today. I dislike the LG 24MB56HQ-B, so I gave it back and bought an EIZO FlexScanEV2450. The EIZO LCD monitor as well as the CRT monitor are connected by the same cables. Both monitors still show the BIOS, but just the CRT shows the syslinux menu. The LCD monitor claims that there is no HDMI signal. If I turn of the CRT monitor it doesn't change. If I disconnect the VGA cable, then the LCD monitor turns on and shows the syslinux menu. There are no issues with lightdm or openbox, xorg.conf and xrandr allow all wanted configurations, IOW I can chose between the LCD, the CRT or use both monitors. In short, just the syslinux menu does use the wrong monitor. I want to use the LCD display only, just for some tasks I want to use the CRT monitor, too. However, disconnecting the CRT monitor and only connecting it on demand isn't an option. Is there a way to ensure that syslinux does use the monitor connected by HDMI? Regards, Ralf

[arch-general] makepkg - any way to recompile only newly patched files in large packages?

All, There was a fix for a gtk2 bug I filed regarding the recentchooserdefault.c file. (it was a one-line fix where a variable needed reset to 0). Is there any way I can configure makepkg to behave as if the gcc -MP -MD options had been given to have it only recompile the one patched source without rebuilding the entire package -- again? I've been through the wiki and the man page, and other than --repackage, there doesn't seem to be anything that would work (or I'm just missing it). -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
