[arch-general] wmctrl fishy top left corner offset

Hi, does anybody know, what makes the x/y coordinates of a window drift, when setting them by the wmctrl -e option? The offset differs for other Linux users. Instead of figuring out by trial and error what values are needed to correct the offset, it would be nice to calculate the needed values. [arch-general] adjusting Gnome 3 window placement settings

Hello! Could someone please tell me if there are any user accessible settings to control placement of appication program windows, when using Arch 64-bit with Gnome 3 desktop? If so, where are they and how is the window placement adjusted? Thank you.

[arch-general] How to remove secondary display shown in Gnome 3 settings

Hello. While trying to fix what I thought was an application program window placement problem, it turns out that the problem was that Gnome 3 seems to be detecting a display which does not seem to exist. Clicking the Gnome "Settings" icon, then the "Displays" icon seems to show both a primary and a secondary display. But there is only one monitor and one graphics card! The primary display is correct: 1366 x 768 resolution, 16 x 9 aspect ratio. But even thought there is no second monitor or graphics card, "Displays" shows a secondary display as: 848 x 480 resolution, 16 x 9 aspect ratio. So, how can I delete the non-existent secondary display. (In the good old days, "Displays" included a button to detect displays. Not now). 1) Wild guess: 848 x 480 seems like some sort of phone or tablet display, but 16 x 9 wouldn't seem to be a phone display. 2) A non-existent display - I worry: have I been hacked? This is on an unmodified, standard, name-brand computer running up-to-date Arch 64-bit.

[arch-general] Gedit startup issues

Dear fellow Archers, I'm using XFCE4 on an up-to-date Arch Linux installation I've built from the official downloadable image and by following the instructions on the Arch wiki. The system works fine, but there are still some bugs I want to zap out. First thing is: Sometimes gedit won't start when launching it over the GUI. I've installed it from the package repositories by using pacman, and it works most times, but, sometimes (I can't see any pattern in when it works and when not) it just won't start from the GUI. By GUI, I mean * The XFCE-Applications Menu * By double-clicking a text file that is associated with gedit * By clicking the gedit icon I've attached to docky I've never noticed such issues when launching gedit from the GUI. Furthermore, I didn't see any error messages in dmesg or in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. When the problem appears, it often persists until the next reboot. I have no clue on how to fix it, any ideas are greatly appreciated. It's quite annoying that I can't rely on gedit... Thanks in advance, Lukas

[arch-general] Gnome-disk-utility (Gnome "Disks") problem

Hello. I am running Arch up-to-date 64-bit, with Gnome desktop environment. Until recently, the Gnome-disk-utility (Gnome "Disks" program) was working fine. The Gnome-disk-utility is currently 3.20.1-1, apparently updated 2016-04-12. Today, when I start it using either the icon on the favorites menu on the left side of the desktop, or from the catch-all icon on the favorites menu, that goes to all of the icons that actually launch application programs in Gnome, either way I just get the drop-down menu labeled "Disks" in the top menu bar of the Gnome desktop. No window appears for "Disks". In the drop-down menu there are 4 choices: 1) "Attach disk image" 2) "Help" 3) "About" 4) "Quit" Clicking Quit: the program never launches, the menu just goes away. Clicking Help: the program never launches, but a Gnome Help window titled "Disks & Storage" does pop up. Clicking About: -nothing happens. Clicking "Attach disk image" just the far left part of a window pops up, the rest of the window is past the right edge of the desktop. The window is titled "Select Disk Image To Attach". It looks like a window from Gnome "Files" (Nautilus). Clicking "Cancel" makes that window go away, revealing the main "Disks" window, which *seems* to work as usual, but I am reluctant to test it out. Clicking the "X" buttion dismisses the window, as expected. (Note: at times investigating this, the gnome-disk-utility window(s) may lock up, as well as the mouse, requiring the entire desktop to be "crashed" manually using alt-ctl-bksp, to escape.) I have, in various combinations, 1) rebooted 2) updated (sudo pacman -Syyuv) 3) reinstalled gnome-disk-utility (sudo pacman -Rs gnome-disk-utility) 4) downgraded using the local package cache to the previous version,and the the version before that (sudo pacman -U gnome-disk-utility-3.20.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz, and sudo pacman -U gnome-disk-utility-3.18.3.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz) 5) upgraded gnome-disks-utility again (sudo pacman -U gnome-disk-utility-3.20.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz) 6) searched online for information 7) told the problem it was not wanted here and to please go away. The problem did not go away. Note: part way through the process, gnome-terminal suddenly showed the same problem, which went away as soon as gnome-terminal was reinstalled. So I suspect that the problem may not be with gnome-desktop utility, but with something else, perhaps recently updated, in the Gnome system. I did rely upon gnome-disk-utility, especially to manage external usb disks without losing data, so this is a real problem. Has anyone else run into this problem? Any solutions? Any ideas?

I don't believe a version bump is required for -dkms (e.g. nvidia-dkms in [testing] just got bumped to -4 due to new kernel in [testing])? I understand this is because the nvidia packages use a split PKGBUILD, but it still seems something could be done a bit better here. Perhaps a way for split PKGBUILDs to have different pkgvers (this would cause more problems than it solves IMO) or just not pushing *-dkms automatically with everything else unless sources have changed.

[arch-general] Console FB conflicts with xorg

Hi, When I put in my grub configuration: GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep and consequently get framebuffer for the console, then xorg vesa driver not render properly, and the fbdev xorg driver stops working the DPMS. But If I comment that grub line, evething works fine. The problem is that I use a lot a framebuffer console, and also xorg. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hi, if I call urlview within mutt, I get: "urlview: error while loading shared libraries: libncursesw.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" ncurses is existing here of course If I try to reinstall urlview, I get: aclocal: command not found Where can I find aclocal? [arch-general] LLVM update blocker?

Hi, I'd like to ask if there's anything that is holding back upgrading the LLVM package to 3.8.0. (The package is already flaged out-of-date and I don't think this worth opening an issue for so I decided to ask here...) I'm aware that LLVM is famous for breaking API at every release and I know that clang is currently suffering from the GCC abi_tag issue so I can understand if some of these issues are holding back the upgrade. However, I would still like to know what is the issue (if any) since it would help me planing for the llvm-julia package and related stuff. Thanks, Yichao Yu
