[arch-general] Pacman for user-only packages

Hello, I've been an Arch user for years now because pacman is my favorite package manager. However, I've been working at a job for almost a year now where I use a RHEL machine without root access. They let me use whatever software I want, but I have to build it all from source and install it in my home directory. Since this means that I have the better part of a linux distribution installed ad-hoc by hand, I've often wished I could somehow use pacman and the ABS to automate my builds, have versioning and dependencies, rollback in case of errors, etc. Is there any way to set up pacman/ABS/AUR to install to a user's home directory? Or is there some other user-oriented package manager that people know of to accomplish this sort of thing? Thanks, William

[arch-general] arch linux install iso problem

Hello. I downloaded the most recent arch linux dual-boot install iso (from 2015-04-01). - checked it with md5 and sha1 against checksums from the website. Also did gpg verify. All okay. - burned to cd using Brasero. Verified cd from within Brasero. Okay. - verified by loop mounting, per website. Okay. Then booted cd. Got to initial menu, chose 64-bit install (computer is 64-bit). Then it stalls out, with error messages (can't copy because can't complete boot process). Sort of like: :: Triggering uevents . . . ... blk_update request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 1226572 ... blk_update request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 1226572 ... Buffer I/O error on dev sr0, logical block 153344, async page read :: Mounting '/dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201504' ^@ERROR: device did not show up after 30 seconds . . . I burned another cd, and got the same exact results, including the same exact error messages. I have had no other problems making and using other cds or dvds, including images of other distributions < ducks : ) > Note: I can (and have) installed ARCH on the same computer, using the Evo/lution 0.4 installer - works fine. But I want to learn to install The Arch Way. So, is the Arch iso from 2015-04-01 defective as published? Or, what else might be wrong?

[arch-general] Why does network interface sometimes change name?

I am running Arch as a guest in VMware Player on Win7X64. On every odd boot, the name of the network interface changes. Sometimes it is: eno16777736 Sometimes it is: eth0 This makes it really hard to configure a fixed IP, which I do by having in `/etc/dhcpcd.conf`: interface eno16777736 static ip_address=192.168.101.10/24 static routers=192.168.101.2 static domain_name_servers=192.168.101.2 I have to change back and forth the interface name in that configuration file.

All, I generally create a system-wide /etc/bash.bashrc.local file to contain history defaults. E.g.: $ cat /etc/bash.bashrc.local HISTCONTROL=ignoreboth:erasedups HISTIGNORE='[ ]*:&:?' (HISTSIZE & HISTFILESIZE are exported on a per-user basis in ~/.bashrc) I then just add a line to source it in /etc/bash.bashrc: $ cat /etc/bash.bashrc # # /etc/bash.bashrc # <snip> # - source /etc/bash.bashrc.local [ -r /etc/bash.bashrc.local ] && . /etc/bash.bashrc.local Both files are present and readable: $ ls -l /etc/bash.bashrc* -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 697 Apr 6 20:01 /etc/bash.bashrc -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 418 Mar 10 09:40 /etc/bash.bashrc.local I do this the same way on both Arch and SuSE. Chasing a bash bug on SuSE, I would check the the environment with: $ env | grep HIST HISTSIZE=20000 HISTFILESIZE=20000 HISTIGNORE= *:&:?:?? HISTCONTROL=ignoreboth:erasedups Doing a pacman update earlier to day, I just checked the environment on Arch on a whim: $ env | grep HIST HISTSIZE=5000 HISTFILESIZE=15000 Huh? Where is HISTIGNORE and HISTCONTROL? Is there something unique to Arch that prevents sourcing or prevents setting HISTXXX in this manner. I can't think of anything offhand that would prevent it, but it certainly isn't being set. Any ideas on why? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

[arch-general] Lenovo carbon X1 and kernel 3.19 issues

Hi guys, I have a Lenovo Carbon X1 third generation, just bought a few months ago. Everything worked perfectly but a week ago I upgraded to the new kernel version: "Linux carbon 3.19.2-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Mar 18 16:21:02 CET 2015 x86_64 GNU/Linux" After that two problems started: 1. Sometimes after resuming from suspension Xorg becomes crazy. I use Awesome as VM and basically it still shows something but I can't click or do anything, and the weird thing is that if I kill "Awesome" and start it again, same problem. It only starts to work normally again when I reboot the machine. The problem is not Awesome either because I tried also Fluxbox and Xfce4 but still the same problem. I can't see any clue from the logs either, any idea what I could look at? Thanks a lot PS. About 1. sometimes while listening to music the computer would give a tiny shock that made the external monitor skip and a small shock in my headset, which was very annoying, and makes me thing is a hardware issue.

[arch-general] Why are there no debug packages?

There has been many discussions and requests for separate debug symbol packages, even people offering to implement modifications needed for separate debug repos. But now, several years later, debug packages did not happen. I couldn't even find a definitive answer why there couldn't be debug packages in the official repos. So, why are there no debug packages (not even for the commonly requested ones like KDE and glibc)? [arch-general] Kernel Module snd_seq_midi No Longer Inserted Automatically

I'd like help regarding a problem I'm having with kernel module snd_seq_midi. Until sometime in March this module was being automatically inserted; that's no longer happening. The module is still present and can be manually inserted with modprobe. I know that snd_seq_midi is part of package "linux" but I don't know what's responsible for automatically inserting the module. I'd appreciate any information as to how I can find out. The issue may have started with my update of linux to 3.19.2-1 on March 21. Today I updated linux to 3.19.3-1 but that didn't solve the problem. It's also possible that the issue is related to ALSA; I updated alsa-lib and alsa-utils to 1.0.29-1 on March 10. I'd appreciate any help regarding how snd_seq_midi used to be automatically inserted, or general information regarding how automatic module insertion works. Thanks.
