[arch-general] I know of $repo, is there a $arch too?

This is the second time I'm being stupid when modifying my mirrorlist and I by accident put in a i686 repo on a 64-bit machine. I can report that running 32-bit sudo on a 64-bit machine is fraught with problems :-) So, just to work around my stupidity I was wondering if it is possible to put something like $arch in the mirrorlist, so I can stop writing out i686/x86_64? [arch-general] [OT] What is wrong with DBus anyway?

Hi, fellow archers. I've created a new email with a new subject, so that who wants to ignore this completely, can do it easily. The recent past discussions about DBus got me thinking about an unanswered question: what is technically wrong with DBus? After some time researching about that, I can't find that answer by myself. DBus is just a way to make applications communicate. It can be used in several languages, namely C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, Ruby, and many more. There are tools for it in bash, although there's some limitations with that, but is very easy to do something fast in python or perl or ruby or... It (DBus) has some interesting mechanisms to activate daemons just when needed. I find this feature very interesting, so that you only spend the resources when you really need. One restriction is that it is not network enabled, so it only works locally. But in the home page, there is a invitation to improve that situation (http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/DBusRemote) Anyway, I would like to read what others have to say about DBus, but please give techinical reasons. I don't want to know who likes and who dislikes DBus. And I don't have anything against who dislikes DBus. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Thanks. -- R: Porque prejudica a legibilidade do texto. [arch-general] Bug on Initrd scripts

Hi all Anyone has intesting about bug 17474 (at http://bugs.archlinux.org/) ? When a kernel param begins with digital, the initrd scrip (/lib/initcpio/init) will fail. At least one such kernel param is found: "8250.nr_uarts=xxx" Because the 8250 is a driver name and that driver is compiled into the kernel( not as a module),so the only way to set param of it is by kernel cmdline. But in initrc scripts, the "case" block does handle that correctly. I beg the maintainer fix this bug, please.

[arch-general] makechrootpkg and long union unmount time

Hello, When I'm building a package using makechrootpkg and the build fails or I happen to interrupt it, sometimes it gets stuck at the "cleaning up unioned mounts" stage for a very long time (from several seconds up to a few minutes). During this time, the disk shows intense activity. Does this happen to others too? Any idea why this is occurring and how to prevent it?

[arch-general] suggestion for pacman: Recommended packages.

The current case for many packages that use optdepends is as follows. Let's say a package called package1 installs some extra binaries or plugins. Those extra not so used binaries or plugins have extra dependencies (let's call them libsomething) marked as optdepends. so on installation pacman will say something: optional dependency: libsomething needed for package1 plugins to work. How about instead those extra binary files or plugins are split into another package called package1-plugins and have libsomething as plain dependency? Then on package1 installation, pacman should say something like: Recommended packages: package1-plugins for blah blah functionality. A good example is the pacman package itself which has an optional dependency on python for rankmirrors script. Maybe we could split it into a separate pacman-rankmirrors which depends on python the when a user installs/upgrades pacman package, he/she is prompted for recommended package pacman-rankmirrors for blah blah functionality. pacman-rankmirrors would depend on python. I think this is a better and cleaner approach. Obviously not every package can use that approach but it will clean some optdepends and remove some ldd errors because of uninstalled optdepends. Another thing, anyway to make pacman -Rns somepackage also remove optional dependencies that no other package uses?

[arch-general] kde4/kmail slow - anybody else notice or is it just me?

Guys, Quick request for confirmation. I generally have used tbird in the past but when doing the kde4.3beta tests, I resolved to use kmail and I have pretty much stuck with it since May. The issue I am seeing is a slowdown in kmail that I guess is 4.3.4 related. Specifically I see a slowdown when I access a mail folder containing >2000 messages or so. Each time I leave and return to a folder (my arch folder for example) kmail reloads and re-sorts the entire folder taking some 20+ seconds each time. It is like all 'folder state' caching (for lack of better words) has been turned off. (if that is possible) Anybody else seeing a slow down in kmail? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
