[arch-general] General Linux Server Information Available

Listmates, Just a general point of interest. Over the past 4-5 months, as time permits, I have made an effort to put up a site to capture some of the Linux notes, tips, etc.. that I have squirreled away over the years and make that information available to anyone that it might help. The site is 3111skyline.com and the top-level menu entries of interest are "openSuSE Howtos" and "Linux Tips & Tricks". Regardless of the main tab title "openSuSE Howtos", there is a bunch of stuff that applies to Linux in general, like the "openSuSE Server Setup" page, etc.., they are general enough to apply to any distro. Like tonight, I was using that page to setup and secure mysql, etc.. on Arch. The link to the "raw" information that has not been formatted into web pages is the "Linux Download Dirs..." link under the "Linux Tips & Tricks" menu. That is just a link to the directories for the website that has +Indexes enabled so you can just pick around and browse. There is a fairly cool collection of wallpapers, etc. in the directories that are not listed in the menus. Additionally, the complete 3-Column layout for the website itself has been packaged and made available for anyone who has thought about setting up a site themselves and wants a "go-by" to use to see how things work or to tear apart and take the useful/interesting parts from. All of the information is available under GPL3 (except for family photos, etc. that should be secured), so if any of the information would be useful to add to the Arch wiki, feel free to grab it and just copy and paste it to the wiki. I will try to add useful information to the Arch wiki, as time permits. Right now the site is hosted/mirrored on two openSuSE boxes sitting in my house. (I just change the external routing between the two depending on which one I am working on at the time) I am working to get my Arch install up and running on one of the boxes, so as soon as I pick through the apache configs and get apache and ssl configured on the Arch box, the site will be hosted there. That's it. No questions in this post. Just hopefully some help for anyone that can use some of the information I have squirreled away;-) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Listmates, How is process loading handled at boot in Arch Linux? I found: [19:32 archangel:/etc] # ls -1 rc* rc.conf rc.local rc.local.shutdown rc.multi rc.shutdown rc.single rc.sysinit rc.d: <snip> But before I started hacking things I thought I would ask where I should put things generally (rc.local?) and then where to put the services that might need to be started earlier than rc.local (rc.sysinit?) I thought I would ask before I make a royal fool out of myself. (I like to minimize those times) Also, I have no problems setting the stuff up by hand, but I also wanted to check if there was any type of automated service manager like chkconfig, just in case. [arch-general] Repository download speed? Any way to improve?

Listmates, After my initial install, loading packages from core, extra and community I was limited to an average of 58K downstream bandwidth. for kdemod-legacy (and normally) I see the full 136K that my pitiful 1M down provides. Currently I have the repositories defined in pacman.conf in the default manner: [core] Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist [extra] Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist [community] Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist Do I need to specify individual mirrors that would work better for my location in TX? If so, where can I get a list that will let me see the closest ones? Thanks. P.S. I apologize for the rapid-fire questions, I'm just trying to make friends with Arch. List, In openSuSE for A/V codecs you need to add two extra repositories (packman & videolan [vlc]), is there an equivalent (mod or set) for Arch or do we just build from vlc? -- David C. [arch-general] Proposed netcfg expansion

Hello there, I was recently digging around in the netcfg code to figure out why my WEP passphrase wasn't working. As I expected, it is because iwconfig at the moment doesn't support WEP passphrase. Anyway, so I'd like to know the reason this has not been implemented in general. Is it because the netcfg devs want it in iwconfig and the iwconfig guys don't want to write this? Is it because no one has cared enough to do it? Should I go talk about this elsewhere? Anyway, I personally think that netcfg could use this feature, and that it'd be dead simple to implement. I figured I'd do it while I'm on break, but I wanted to confirm that this is indeed a feature that wasn't being avoided for some reason. If it is a feature that is being avoided, can I at least write a small patch to tell the user what's the haps? (At the moment, netcfg tries to use the improper passphrase by passing a command to iwconfig and then iwconfig throws out a cryptic "unknown command" error.) Cheers! -Andrei "Garoth" Thorp

[arch-general] vi - Howto make past from clipboard work??

Listmates, One thing I have to fix is vi's behavior of wanting to go into visual mode ever time I try to select something and vi's refusal to paste the clipboard in insert mode using the middle mouse button. I know this must be a basic configuration setting somewhere? I've looked for /etc/vimrc and ~/.vimrc but all I found was ~/.viminfo and that didn't help. Listmates, Last question for the night, "How do I install KDE3?" I have picked around through the forums, found http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KDE, which sent me to http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=54118&p=1 and I added the repo, but it appears to be a downgrade repo and pacman -S kde3 fails with a dependency for akode: error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies) :: kde3-kdemultimedia: requires akode Can anyone else point me to a good reference that will help me install kde 3.5.10 as a 'fresh' install of KDE? Don't get me wrong, I'm not a kde4 basher and I look forward to it maturing. I have used kde4 on openSuSE 11.0 and 11.1 (returning to 3.5). However, until the kate and quanta issues are resolved, I need kde 3.5 to avoid a loss of functionality in the interim. After those items are resolved, I'll happily move back to kde4 and continue playing the "where did my widget go?" game;-) An Aside: Note, as most know, ATI completely dropped support for all RV300 - RV500 chipsets as of the botched 9.3 driver release.
