Hey All, We, as the Turkish users of Arch Linux, have created our own community to support, to translate, to develop our very beloved Linux distro on all platforms. As our first gift to the community, we have translated pacman completely to Turkish. It's also being tested by our community right now. We set http://www.archlinuxtr.org as our web site (it's currently under development) and have SVN, Trac projects (still being configured). [arch-general] new arch user, questions about package management

Hi, For various personal reasons including the rolling release model (which is critical to me), easy package building and availability of binary packages and build scripts I'm considering changing to arch. I do have a few questions that I can't seem to find the answers to, sorry if they are covered in the forums, I did look there but couldn't find the info I'm looking for. eix like tool: Is there a utility similar to gentoos 'eix'? From the eix man page: eix - a set of utilities for searching, diffing and updating a binary cache of your local portage-trees What I'm looking for is a way to see a diff of my package cache prior to and just after syncing, i.e. what packages are out of date (which pacman does show), what packages have been removed from the repositories since my last sync and what packages have been added to the repository since my last sync. eix does this nicely imho using optional color output, pacman-color (and pacman) does some of what I'm looking for but I'm not sure it will do the diff part. PKGBUILD I've built my own packages for tmpwatch, the oracle instant client and built tora with oracle support. I've found PKGBUILDs for backuppc and a few other packages that I need via AUR->Packages link off the arch home page. To me Arch package building is refreshing when compared to my experiences with ebuilds and rpm spec files. I can't seem to find a list of all the varibles that can be used in a PKGBUILD script though (like $startdir etc), where would I find that info? If I end up totally switching I want to make my own repository (like a yum or apt repository) of my custom packages for the systems I manage. I think I've seen a few pages on how to set that up but if there is an authoritative page someone knows of I'd appreciate it. I've been running arch on my laptop and home system for almost a week now and I am very happy with the results so far. Thanks in advance for your help, Dave

[arch-general] GTK applications can not remember their last position

Hi, all It is a little weird that all my GTK applications (eg, pidgin && pcmanx) can not remember their last position today. Instead, they all appear at top-left corner. I've no idea what could be wrong. Any ideas? lyman

Hi, All. I just want to notice that http://www.archlinux.org/about/ is outdated. Current and release repos, nothing about x86_64, etc... May be this link should be changed to http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_Linux but it is partially outdated too.

* * Hello, I installed community/xen whithout any problem. But when i reboot, using the generated kernel, it complains about missing several modules (Modules Fatal blablah). Including my network card ! How can i solve that ? Is there a way to get a kernel as complete as the working one generated by archlinux during instalation ? Thanks Bilan

Hi Archers, in the past weeks there was a little discussion in the forums about the purpose of ABS vs. AUR and when to use which of both tools. Srcpac was mentioned as being the right tool to install customized packages from the already existing PKGBUILDs in the ABS tree. However, srcpac didn't work since abs.conf moved and other minor things that changed (makepkg doesn't like to be used by root etc.). I took to opportunity to fetch the srcpac git repo and get it working again, because I think it makes a good addition to ABS + pacman. Instead of sending a bunch of patches I've setup a public git repo where you can fetch it and give it a testrun if you like (I can send patches too if required): http://dev.chimeric.de/git/srcpac.git I've also changed a couple of things. These are merely suggestions, which are of course disputable ;). I completely dropped the srcpac.conf in favour of another approach. srcpac now looks for config files in /etc/srcpac.d/<pkgname>. You have one config file per package. These files contain only sed expressions (they're just simple sed script files) and have to be named exactly like the corresponding folder (package) in the ABS tree ie. "python-doc", or "most". IMHO this is much more clear (KISS if you like) than having one config file containing stuff like "pythonXdoc=('#sedexpr#' '#sedexpr#')" which gets really messy when you change lots of things. Another possibility would be to keep the modified PKGBUILDs in /var/srcpac/<repo>/<pkgname>/PKBUILD and completely drop sed, though I think the sed approach requires less work. Because makepkg doesn't like to be run as root there were also some implications for building packages. To resolve them I decided to use a new user named srcpac and a dedicated build directory /var/srcpac in which the packages are build instead of building directly in the ABS tree. srcpac will drop privileges for the build process to this user. I also had to introduce a little perl dependency :( (just a oneliner) to be able to sanitize packages names from urls. The bash expression which was originally used didn't work anymore and the suggested fix in FS#8434 worked only partly and not for all packages. However, I failed to get the thing right in sed, thus the perl oneliner. If someone has an idea I'd greatly appreciate it (see get_pkgname()) (examples of packages which fail with the fix suggested in the bug report, because they're versioning scheme is a little different, are feh and most). Instead of using makepkg -i to install the newly build packages on the fly, srcpac uses pacman -U now, this way it's now possible to specify a different target root directory when build packages from source (this was marked as missing feature). From the test I've run up to now everything _seems_ to work as expected, but it would'nt harm if someone else who's interested in this could give it a try :). If you plan to try it you have to do the following things before running it (I can provide a PKGBUILD if needed): - add a new user 'srcpac' - create /var/srcpac and grand permissions for srcpac That's it, what do you think about it? I am open for suggestions in any direction (+thx for reading this rather lenghty mail ;)). [arch-general] should gawk be in group base-devel?

Hi, It is often quoted that, for package building purposes, it is assumed a user has packages in group base-devel installed. gawk is part of base but a user could deselect it within the Arch Installer. Does it make sense to add gawk to group base-devel so that its presence is mandated by the previous assumption? Should I raise a feature request for this? Regards, Neil Darlow

Hi, I would like to announce my small unofficial Arch-graphics repository. It's aimed to provide some graphics-related packages (mostly 3D related graphics as renderers and so). Unfortunately there are only i686 packages, because I don't have any x86_64 machine. Why I've made my own repository? It's easy, I'm maintaining many packages on AUR and I use many other packages from AUR. I think it's good to share my packages, so other users of same programs doesn't have to compile everything themselves. I'm trying to keep every package really high-quality, but it's without any warranty. If it eats your pizza, I'll not be able to restore your pizza to the previous state. And one more thing. Please do not expect daily updates, even though there are some -svn and -cvs packages. I'm usually compiling when there are some cool new features or if I don't have anything better to do. And it also depends on compile time – I don't like building hugin, because it takes (on my PC) almost 2 hours. Homepage: http://arch-graphics.kx.cz/ I'hope it will help somebody. I've had problems recently with all messages sent to the ML being dropped silently. With the help of cactus, I found that it was because I use "Daenyth+arch@" as my address, and I was sending mail from "Daenyth@". In Gmail, the fix is to go to settings -> accounts, and add a new account sending from "yourmail+comment(a)gmail.com", and to be sure to always send from that address when you post to the list. Hope this helps anyone else having issues. Thanks again cactus. --Daenyth

[arch-general] Can't boot from /usr on LVM

Hello. Last week, I installed Archlinux-i686-2007.08-2.ftp.iso on my system. I'd like to have / on /dev/sda3 (PATA) and /usr on /dev/sys/ArchUSR. "sys" is a LVM2 Volume Group, which I also use in my Gentoo Linux installation on the same system. I've read some installation guides on the Arch Wiki and changed USELVM=YES in /etc/rc.conf and have this in mkinitcpio.conf: HOOKS="base udev keymap autodetect pata lvm2 filesystems" After changing that line, I re-ran mkinitcpio and a new img was created; this image is loaded through grub; menu.lst has: title Arch kernel (hd0,2)/boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 initrd (hd0,2)/boot/kernel26.img In /etc/fstab of the Arch installation, I've got: /dev/sda5 swap swap defaults proc /proc proc defaults usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs defaults sysfs /sys sysfs defaults udev /dev tmpfs defaults,size=8m devpts /dev/pts devpts defaults devshm /dev/shm tmpfs nodev,nosuid,noexec temp /tmp tmpfs defaults /dev/sda3 / ext3 noatime 0 2 /dev/mapper/sys-ArchArch /Arch ext3 noatime 0 2 /dev/sys/ArchUSR /usr ext3 noatime 0 2 When I boot the system, I see that the "sys" VG gets activated and fsck.ext3 is run for /dev/sys/ArchArch and /dev/sys/ArchUSR (messages to the effect that such-and-such fragmentation exists shows and before that, something like LVM [done]). BUT: I can't boot. Booting stops with: mount: special device /dev/mapper/sys-ArchArch does not exist mount: special device /dev/sys/ArchUSR does not exist This shows, that both "paths" are not accessible; neither the /dev/sys/* stuff (which on a Gentoo Linux installation contains symlinks to /dev/mapper), nor the "proper" /dev/mapper path can be accessed. Any ideas about why that happens, and, more importantly, how to fix that? Thanks a lot, Michael
