[aur-general] Discussion about AUR packages signing

Hi, I want to start a discussion about AUR packages signing. If this debate already happened, it means that I'm not really good with Google or unfortunate in the keywords I used in my searches: in these cases forgive me and just give me some pointers. TL;DR I personally "trust" some AUR users who have several good-quality packages, and an optional way to sign AUR packages would permit me to know that I can build and update their packages without worrying too much. Let me introduce my thoughts by explaining the context: when I need an application, I start by looking at the official packages. If it is not existing, I continue by looking in AUR, and eventually if there is no corresponding packages there I wrote my own PKGBUILD and share it. I think this is the most common workflow for arch users. If there is the need to build packages from AUR, preferences differs more between people. Some likes to use AUR-helpers, others try to avoid using unsupported packages, and a last group always build AUR PKGBUILD manually. Official and own-made packages can be used (more-or-less) safely. AUR packages need to be used with precautions, because they come from untrusted users and can be potentially dangerous. Actually this is one of the reason why some people are not using AUR-helpers and prefer to build packages manually. People that avoid to use unsupported packages are not concerned by this discussion, so I'll skip them. People that are building packages manually are doing so mainly to deeply check packages they install, so they must not be very interested with AUR package signing (or maybe are they?). I will then focus on people (like me) that use an AUR-helper in their workflow. I always read PKGBUILDs the first time that I want to install one of them in one of my computers (work, home, laptop). When a new version is released, my AUR-helper will ask me to update it, but after the second or third time I see that the package is well-written, I don't want to look every time at the PKGBUILD, patches and *.install files. In some sense, I start to "trust" to the package owner. With AUR-helpers it is easy to skip this part and just build the packages, but there is a drawback: the package owner can change. The problem with this situation is if the package is orphaned and a new owner start to maintain it, it would not be noticeable. This is where package signing in AUR would be very useful. You give your trust to some users who maintain several good-quality packages. And as long as you build packages signed by those users, you know you are safe to update them without looking at sources. It would also offers some other warranties: no usurpation of maintainer work, no corruption in case of AUR website weakness, etc. Also the solution can be quite simple: The `*.src.tar.gz` can be signed by the owner and the signature file can be uploaded to AUR, next to the source aurball. Later, both files can be downloaded by the user or the AUR-helper and verified with gpg. The rest of the logic must be implemented in AUR-helpers. Some other remarks: - It differs from the notion of TU because the goal is not to give a keyring of trust-able people to all users, but only to permit users who want to trust personally some AUR maintainers to do so. - Of course this doesn't prevent corruption of upstream sources nor offers perfect security. But it is better than nothing, and can potentially focus some unnoticed maintainer changes. - I read some times ago that the goal is to move from AUR to git one day. In this case signing the `*.src.tar.gz` would not be possible and a more complex solution will maybe be needed. Is something like this envisaged? What are your thoughts about this subject? Hello everybody, following a lengthy discussion sublu just deleted my package virtualbox-extension-pack from AUR. This is what his package (virtualbox-ext-oracle) does: * Install an archive file. * Use install script to copy a number of files to /usr without pacman knowing about it. I think this is the wrong way, so I created my own package (virtualbox-extension-pack) that tries to get it right: * Just install the files required, "ready to use" for virtualbox. * No crappy install script required! My package had about 75 votes IIRC, probably there would have been more if more people knew about the details. The discussing had a number of comments that agreed about my opinion regarding installing/coping files to /usr with pacman or the install script. Although I think it is wrong seblu is free to provide his package via AUR. Hi, The issue I've got at the moment is in regards to a poorly packaged package that is also providing files made by other packages? The one in question I've also suggested the fixes to the maintainer, and requested it be orphaned when it was not updated for several months. Within a day the maintainer bumped the version up but didn't fix any other issues. I'm not fussed about being the maintainer or not, I just want the packages that I use to work correctly. [aur-general] no LLDP tools in [extra] or [community] :-/

There's a PKGBUILD for ladvd and lldpd in AUR currently, these are important networking tools in data center environments. Can someone please promote at least one of them to [community] or ideally [extra]? They're not high on votes, but I think this should be an exception since not many people are using Arch in data center environments anyhow that would need them and would thus vote on them. They both implement LLDP daemons.

Hi all, I had hoped it wouldn't come to this, but based on mounting evidence, I've come to the conclusion that I should resign as a TU. Most of you probably already forgot I was here, and I'm sorry that I just haven't been able to keep on top of things and participate lately. A lot has happened with me over the last year: became a father, got a new job, moved house... and I'm realising that my life has changed such that I haven't found time to keep up with Arch / TU duties. I'm still a day-to-day Archer at work and home, and don't see that changing any time. And it's great to have been part of such a talented and welcoming team. [aur-general] Moving noip from [community] to AUR

Hi, Some time ago I adopted the noip package. It's a GPL client that connects to what seems to be a commercial service offered by no-ip.com. The free service offered by them has a hostname that expires every 30 days. I am a bit surprised that this was an official package in the first place. When asking for opinions on IRC, there was support for moving the noip package to AUR. In addition to this, there seems to be several alternative clients, with slightly different versioning schemes. Both here: http://www.noip.com/download?page=linux and here: http://onevista.com/noip2.html. This confusion generated a low volume of out-of-date flags. It just smells bad. I noticed that kdelibs3, which was demoted from the main repositories in May, is not present in the AUR. Is this by design or a mistake? There are many packages in the AUR that depend on kdelibs3, so not having it available breaks all of those packages. Hi all, I'd like to amend my previous request for lldpd and/or ladvd to be moved to [community] or [extra], and add these packages: nagios nagios-nrpe nagios-nrpe-plugin (?) nagios-nsca Again, there are not many people using Arch in data center environments, so the vote counts on these packages may be disproportionately smaller relative to their actual importance to the Arch community in terms of installed machines. We have a lot of work to do in order to make ArchLinux more friendly to administrate in large, distributed deployments such as globally distributed data centers out of the box in a supported/official. About the moving decision, I've no decisional power for it; I'm using noip2 on my personal Ubuntu Server and I had to compile it on my own (Ubuntu has no AUR and no PPA for it, doh). There are a lot of packages that I wish to move in the community repository: hfsprogs, kompozer, sweethome3d, gmtp, arista, spyder/spyder3, sbackup, gwakeonlan, gespeaker, remmina-plugin-*, python-ptrace. There are also packages maintained from other users that I wish to see in community repository: dex2jar, dmg2img, firefox-theme-adwaita and thunderbird-theme-adwaita, gigolo, gscan2pdf, httrack, linkchecker, loggedfs, netactview, pacmanlogviewer, parallel-python, pyrenamer. I read daily the AUR general and AUR requests mailing lists but I never participate in the discussions, after many years of discussions in other ML and forums I lost the pleasure in writing stuff inside the communities. The same applies to IRC, too much time spent in helping others (I was also HelpOp in #irchelp) forced me to away even from IRC. My job coincided with my favorite hobby so, apart my personal projects (see GitHub) I love reading heavy books (technical, development, sysadmin, networking but also theater or classic novels) and watching films when the TV is not owned by my gf. [aur-general] [HEADS-UP] Meta data and split package support in the AUR

Hello, I plan to do the next major AUR release by late May or June and I thought this might be a good time to let people know what is going on behind the scenes. AUR 3.0.0 will be able to read metadata from source packages. These metadata will be read from a file called .AURINFO (contained in the source tarball). Dave wrote several tools [1], including mkaurball which can be used to automatically build a source tarball with metadata so you don't need to worry about creating this file on your own. Having this information available means that: 1. We can drop the PKGBUILD parser from the AUR. The parser will still be available in the upcoming release but it will be marked as deprecated and a warning will be displayed whenever someone tries to upload a source tarball without metadata. 2. We can implement other things that were blocked by the AUR PKGBUILD parser being incomplete and inaccurate. Specifically, the next release will support split packages. Things that are on our TODO list: * Test the new AUR code. The split package code is still experimental. * Fix and extend the AUR RPC interface. * Test Dave's pkgbuild-introspection. * Move pkgbuild-introspection (or at least mkaurball) to [community]. It would also be nice to get metadata generation integrated into makepkg so that people no longer need to install mkaurball to generate source tarballs for the AUR. Since the creation of an extra mailing list, shouldn't the frontpage be adjusted to reflect the change? Currently: "Discussion General discussion regarding the Arch User Repository (AUR) and Trusted User structure takes place on aur-general. This list can be used for package orphan requests, merge requests, and deletion requests. For discussion relating to the development of the AUR, use the aur-dev mailing list." Since the request system changed at whole (requests possible from the webinterface; aur-requests ML) the sentence about the requests should be removed or altered to reflect the current system? Also, to ensure another common misconception doesn't crop up - The Compiz 0.9 gets further patched beyond what is on launchpad.net/compiz by Canonical for Unity. The code you get if you source directly from launchpad.net/compiz is not Unity or Ubuntu specific. I can say this with much confidence, since i've been using it for months now combined with Xfce (as a xfwm4 replacement) on Arch and Manjaro systems. -- Regards, Rob McCathie

[aur-general] move sc and python2-mrjob to [community]

Would it be possible to request that "sc" be promoted to [community] by one of you fine TUs? It doesn't change very often at all and it's a pretty handy tool. Hi, I have been told on arch-general mailing list that that this problem should be post here too, because this is an AUR problem. I'm trying to install icecat with yaourt but get always error: No space left on device. $ df -H Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 66G 38G 26G 60% / tmpfs 3.2G 0 3.2G 0% /dev/shm tmpfs 3.2G 0 3.2G 0% /sys/fs/cgroup tmpfs 3.2G 3.2G 160k 100% /tmp tmpfs 627M 4.1k 627M 1% /run/user/1000 I have installed my arch linux on one partition only, on /dev/sda3. I tried to install icecat several times, moreover after a reboot too, but always get this error message. The BUILDDIR option is unset by default, and if you leave it unset `makepkg` will work fine. * From me: Before I edited the file: /etc/makepkg.conf I tried to install with yaourt the icecat package but get the same error message. That is way I edited the /etc/makepkg.conf file and set the BUILDDIR option to: BUILDDIR=/tmp/makepkg So, leaving it unset doesn't work here. * From Daniel Micay: Leave it unset and build with makepkg directly. > Set BUILDDIR=/var/tmp instead, /tmp is filling up. Or just use the *default* of not building in a global directory... especially /tmp which is a ramdisk. * From Mark Lee: I just looked at yaourt's yaourtrc and it's clear that it's storing its temporary files in /tmp. Building with yaourt means building in tmpfs which would for large compilation jobs can exhaust the tmpfs file system. Either extend the size of /tmp by specifying a larger size when mounting in /tmp (using fstab or just command line) or set a different direcotry via yaourt --tmp <temporary directory>. This should really be posted to the AUR mailing list since it's an AUR issue. Specifying tmpfs in /etc/fstab allows you to dictate how large the ramdisk is, but unless you explicitly stop systemd from mounting /tmp in RAM that's where it will go. Seems as though AUR v3.3 does not recognize this package anymore but does recognize the two split packages it builds, i.e. virtualbox-ck-host-modules and virtualbox-ck-guest-modules. Please merge virtualbox-ck-modules--> virtualbox-ck-host-modules to retain votes/comments. Note that I am not subscribed so please cc me on my communications that requires a reply. Hi, I think we need to add some guidelines to the request form to reduce the number of frivolous deletion requests. For example, someone requested a deletion of a package because "broken, crashes on dll load". The form should include a message such as "Technical issues for active projects should be reported in the comments section so that the maintainer can devise a solution and contact upstream if necessary. Hello AUR General, I am a Manjaro team member and have been an Arch user for ~5 years. I still run Arch proper on many systems and test my AUR packages on Arch proper (just thought i'd get that out of the way ;-p ) We've had to remove someone from our team recently due to their abusing of their forum account's moderation privileges and some other stuff. This person has gone on to prove just how right we were to get rid of them by launching malicious attacks on our wiki and attempts on some other web services. (There's no doubt it's the same person, he directly threatened us with malicious action.) It appears now he is attacking Manjaro team members with any avenue he can find. This account here: https://aur.archlinux.org/account/kingrobbo Has been made for no reason but to troll (myself and possibly other Manjaro devs with AUR accounts). It flagged all of my AUR packages out-of-date (of which none are) and sent a delete request for one (aqualung). The name "kingrobbo" tells me with 100% certainty that it's the same now-troll we've been dealing with, if any AUR admins want more information on this and why i know it's the same person please feel free to email me privately. For now i haven't set all my packages to not-out-of-date, so the AUR admins get a chance to see what i mean. I cannot apologise enough for our problems spilling onto AUR, obviously this is the last thing we want. [aur-general] Package requests & wiki cleanup strategy

Hello all, few months ago, in April and May, I have organized a community action to clean up broken links to AUR (and official) packages on the Arch wiki (see [0-2]). This has been done with a bot [3], which goes through all pages on Arch wiki with at least one package link and detects broken links. This is not very good strategy for multiple reasons: 1) It relies on one man to run the bot, process the log and create the appropriate wiki page. It is also very demanding task as one pass takes over four hours to execute and currently requires manual intervention about every 30 minutes. 2) It is safe to assume that only the newest broken links will be updated or removed. There are hundreds of broken links on unmaintained pages, usually in a language that no Archer speaks. These links clutter the list and make finding the recent broken links difficult. 3) Finding the information necessary to update the link (or the relevant section if necessary) is lengthy, sometimes impossible if the person is not directly involved in the software or its (re)moval in the repos. (Not all package deletions/merges/moves are "logged" in the ML, right?) There are solutions for 1 and 2 (improve the bot and make it run on a server, filter out ancient broken links), but 3 is the main reason. I would like to discuss a strategy that would take the issue more "from the source". The recently introduced "File Request" feature of the AUR backend should come in handy. Ideally, the wiki would be updated by the person responsible for the package's (re)moval (i.e. the person filing the request, if there is one), so I was thinking that something like "please update the wiki" (along with some useful information, e.g. link to wiki search query with the package's name) could be added to the file request form. Also some instructions could be put in the wiki and linked to. Next, it should be ensured that the information necessary for updating the link is searchable, even after longer time. The aur-requests ML is perfect for this, but there are actions not going through the file request feature (e.g. action on TU's initiative), right? Plus also the actions over official repos. I haven't given much thought to this yet, but there could be a public log of all actions in the AUR and (separately) official repositories. The information necessary are timestamp, pkgname, action type and reason (link to aur-requests if available). Any other ideas, comments, improvements? I haven't followed the development of AUR for the past two months, so I might have missed something... You can now send deletion, merge and orphan requests by using the "File Request" link in the package actions box. Note to all AUR helper maintainers: There also is a new version of the RPC interface (v3) that makes the result values types a bit more consistent. See FS#40963 [2] for details. Please merge python2-liblzma [1] into python2-pyliblzma [2] because its a duplicate and pyliblzma [3] is the official name. Description: I contacted all old (hard and opt) dependencies of python2-liblzma [1] (like bfsync [4], binwalk [5] etc.) and they all made the transition to python2-pyliblzma [2] some time ago. I also helped a bit out by cleaning up the PKGBUILD for python2-pyliblzma [2]. I maintain the xorg-server-bug54168 package in AUR, which is a replacement for xorg-server that contains a small bug fix that upstream is not addressing. Anyway, when I submit a new version for the xorg-server 1.15.2 update, it tells me that "xorg-server is on the package blacklist, please check if it's available in the official repos". I've not seen this error before when updating my package. Is there any documentation about what this blacklist is, or how to avoid it, or how to petition for an override? I've done the standard searches, but have only come across random forum and mail list posts; nothing comprehensive. Thanks, - Mike

Hello, Being not very aware of the organisation of the AUR, I'm sending you a little request for information about a package : libnss-mysql [1]. According to the AUR, this package is an orphan. Since it does not have any maintainer to perform upstream updates, it is dead, as one could expect. I can see it was last updated on 2012-05-15. However, the last update from upstream dates back to 2005/2006. Is there any way I could know who was maintaining this package before it became an orphan ? Thanks, JWHS. Hi, I'm back again lol. Ok, so when I made p-git depend on the package pypump2-git that I made, and when I installed python2-click after modifying the python-click PKGBUILD everything works as expected. When, however, I make p-git require python2-click and python2-pypump-git it fails to build. It installs the package, for example python2-click, then at the end, I get something like installing python-click 100% Then it fails to install p-git saying dependancies are not met, missing python2-click and now also same error with python2-pypump-git. So, how can I fix it? I really want to do this stuff the right way, but I also want it to work at the end of the day. There's nothing worse than finding a nice shiny new package in the AUR and trying to build it only to have it fail. Should I switch back to the old way? Or, should I just put python setup.py and python2 setup.py in the same package() function? But, even if I do put them in the same function, it still won't fix my problems with python2-click. https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/weka/ It should use the latest stable version 3.6.11, instead of current 3.7 branch. Current weka should be renamed to something like weka-devel. Although a previous maintainer states that " The difference between stable and development upstream is pointless, there is no reason not to be using this branch." , there still exist users who want to use a stable package. So a rename is necessary to clarify. And if possible, orphan it as well, several packages of the maintainer are out of date.

Hi, I have the PKGBUILDs for both p-git and pypump-git. One of the dependancies is something called click. I found python2-click and figured this would be what is needed. However, when the package is installed, the name changes to just python-click. Hi, I tried to install roundcube (in community/), but it fails when it tries to check if he can write in his temp dir, which is a symlink that points to /tmp/roundcube and is rwx for http (and group http too). I have the same problem if I try to put the symlink to /var/tmp/roundcube, but it works with /var/lib/roundcube Note that I update the open_basedir each time, and absolutely no message show in the logs concerning fails to write in /var/tmp or /tmp (only when I forget to change the open_basedir value for php). Any idea where it can come from? Did I miss something in apache (or php?) configuration? Thanks in advance! -- Ismael

All: In my quest to begin getting my packages updated for the recent Perl 5.20 release. I have run into a number of problems with tests failing on most of the pkgbuilds, even stable pkgbuilds like perl-moose or perl-moo. These test errors primarily smell like this: Test Summary Report ------------------- t/00_modules.t (Wstat: 512 Tests: 0 Failed: 0) Non-zero exit status: 2 Parse errors: No plan found in TAP output with many more of the same. To fix this, I ended up just going through and mass rebuilding all my AUR perl pkgbuilds installed on my machine as such: for p in $(pacman -Qm | grep perl- | awk '{ print $1 }'); do yaourt -S $p --noconfirm; [[ $? > 0 ]] && echo $p >> /tmp/fail.1; done when that finishes, I then run: for p in $(cat /tmp/fail.1); do yaourt -S $p --noconfirm; [[ $? > 0 ]] && echo $p >> /tmp/fail.2; done Note the increment of the integer for the /tmp/fail extension. I ran this once more ( with the correct fail.2 file >> /tmp/fail.3 ) and I watched the builds, and noted the failures that were due to out of date URLs, or errors beyond my control ( IE: missing patch files, etc ). Something between the first run mass reinstalling all m/^perl-.+$/ with pacman -Qm and the second run, iterating the /tmp/fail.1 file all the failures from tests cleared up. the third run, caught the rest where there was a bum dependency or the like. For me with roughly 100 installed pkgbuilds on a local machine from AUR. It took just the three runs. You may or may not experience similar results; some may only need to run twice, some may need to run 4 or 5 times ( Just remember to increment your integer file extension between each run to 4 and/or 5 as applicable). But this should help in fixing the test failures that so many are seeing. Now if you don't use yaourt to manage your packages, I'm sorry. I've used it for 7 years without issue and point and laugh at all the haters. Haters gonna hate. :-P If someone out there cares to provide instructions for a either a yaourt alternative tool, such as packer, or a raw method, please reply to this post. Any flaming about yaourt ( or Perl ) will result in me LOLing at you with every ounce of LOL this mortal coil can muster. Now, all that said. Please don't mark a pkgbuild out of date simply because the tests fail. Leave the author a comment instead. Only mark the Perl pkgbuilds out of date, that are in fact out of date... Hi there. lib32-libwbclient[1] and lib32-smbclient[2] are out-of-date for sometime now, some users commented that and also flagged them, and after I sent an email one week ago, the maintainer didn't reply nor update them... Considering that the maintainer has only these two package (sort of unmaintained), I suppose he is not interessed anymore. Also, another user created lib32-libwbclient-updated [3] which IMHO doesn't make sense and it is already out-of-date. I intended to adopt and maintain [1] and [2]. So please disown [1] and [2] and delete [3]. Hello, I get an error message about wrong permissions in the AUR-source-file. I had wrong permissions for my PKGBUILD and changed that, created the sourcep-package again. Nevertheless the problem could not be solved. I used mkaurball to create the tarball. After creating the tarball I untared it, to check permissions and anything seemed to be ok. Hi all, just wanted to let you know about my plan of moving Pandas to community, so they don't interfere with plans of other TUs or AUR maintainers. Pandas is popular package (approximately 50 votes for bot python 2 and python 3 version in AUR[1,2]) and is one of the basic packages for doing science in Python, it is vital part of so called "SciPy Stack"[3] (and actually last missing piece). I planned to do it lot earlier, but there were some remaining issues that were fixed by 0.14.0 release - most important finally official support for current release of Python 3.4[4]. Pandas has very few dependencies, but a lot of recommended and optional dependencies, all of which provide important pieces of functionality, to make the experience complete. That's why I will move in and maintain all it's dependencies as well, unless someone has anything against it. This includes: - bottleneck library [5,6] - statsmodels library [7,8] - patsy library [9,10] - set of libraries to read and write Excel files [11,12,13,14,15,16] The order of moving those packages will be following: - bottleneck because it is recommended dependency providing speed to lots of operations - libraries to deal with Excel, because it improves usability of library and is direct dependency - Pandas itself - Patsy, because it is dependency of statsmodels - statsmodels, because pandas is its dependency, and it is optdependency of pandas - so it comes last - Pandas again, but with statsmodels as optdepends and tests enabled I hope to push one update every few days. I will let the related packages settle in community for day or two and then push next ones, staring on 4'th June, hopefully finish with those before 17'th - it takes some time, mostly due to limited time I can spend of this particular move. Hi, I was trying to update my PKGBUILD for talking-clock to get the version from git, but it keeps failing and saying the directory doesn't exist. When I check though, the directory does exist. Can someone please take a look and tell me what I have done wrong? [aur-general] changing PKGNAME of md5deep to hashdeep

A user is requesting that the md5deep package name be changed to hashdeep, which I agree seems consistent with the project maintainer's wishes, since all development of md5deep has been moved to github under the hashdeep name. Do any Trusted Users have strong feelings about this or advice for me? And if I go ahead with the name change, what is the best procedure? I'm assuming I would need to do a replaces=(md5deep) and/or a provides=(md5deep) and then request that comments, etc. be moved over.
