We have a discussion on the forums [1] about Arch's policy towards what packages can be provided in the AUR with the focus on abandonware. User megadriver found a couple packages [2] that provide a means of downloading games for free (as in beer) even though those games can be bought. Apps can go in and out of the abandonware status as their availability changes: now you can buy them, now you can't. Do we care about this or is it up to the user to check if the stuff he installs is legal? Should we set up a bot to scan for potential 'warez' stuff? This is (again) about forbidding urls to warez on pkgbuilds on AUR. probably you people have seen the discussion on the forum. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=128832 But is not going anyware. Now, I think ewaller, hitted the nail in the head when said: "If you don't have explicit permission to copy and distribute, you may not copy and distribute. Period." I think something as easy like that would solve it all. So I am requesting a rule like that (it can be different, it doesn't have to be those words) to be added to the aur user guidelines. maybe here, on sharing packages? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AUR_User_Guidelines#Sharing_packages Thanks.

The download link is dead, so in teory is not piracy. but the package can be adopted by someone and get "fixed" with a working link. just for the record, is not a trial/shareware version; there is not shareware version of that game. [aur-general] Dynamically evaluating md5sum value in PKGBUILD

Hi all, I'm maintaining hunspell-pl AUR package (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=44331) The problem with the package is that the maintainer of the source provides only the latest(daily) tarball snapshot. The md5sum of the tarball changes daily and the old files are removed. The packages is very often marked as 'outdated' and I'm asked to update it, both via comments and email. Some users propose to use dynamic values for pkgver= and md5sum=, but I think it's not a good way. Hi, with the linux 3.1 package we took another approach about handling external modules. Because of that, i want to add back the old virtualbox-modules package that includes the host modules. Now comes the tricky part. I want to replace all the post_install/upgrade messages that we have now in virtualbox and guest additions for arch and replace them with a wiki link. The wiki is a total mess and includes details that doesn't matter for virtualbox on arch. Help me to clear the wiki a bit before adding the link to the package. My idea is to have in virtualbox wiki page this: 1) how to install it 2) what modules to add in rc.conf and a short description of modules functionality 3) how to run it 4) how to run guest additions on arch(as a section rather than a new page like is it now) That's it. I don't care about sharing functionality, tips and tricks for openbsd. Just plain arch functionality. -- Ionuț

I'd like to see nexuiz replaced by xonotic in [community]. Problem is that nexuiz is still a fairly popular package despite being dead upstream. xonotic devs recommend dropping nexuiz in favor of xonotic. Technically, xonotic does not replace nexuiz because its gameplay is somewhat different. I'd like some opinions on this.

*sigh* I dreaded having to write this message. If anyone has noticed, I've been inactive in the Arch community for at least two or three weeks now, and my TU duties haven't been fulfilled in at least as long, if not more. With the start of the academic year, I was hopeful for enough spare time to continue what I enjoy (TU-ing, hobbies, both computer and non-computer related) ~ looks like I was sorely mistaken. Operating on the minimum amount of sleep that a human can survive on is not enjoyable, in case you were wondering. All laziness and time-lacking aside, both of my production machines have been fried due to power surges (which components, I yet don't know), and are now reduced to nothing more than fancy metal boxes. This leaves me with an old Thinkpad, but that's not even running Arch at the moment (/heresy), and it's a P4, so trying to manage multicore packages from there would be a no-go. It's just a very frustrating time, and I don't feel that I'm capable of being an active package maintainer considering the circumstances. Hopefully I can reapply sometime in the future if things fall back into place. My packages are, as far as I know, *mostly* up-to-date, although a month's absence can create a bit of mayhem. I will try my best to contribute and close out any open bug reports that I may be assigned to, but I can't make any definite promises. It's been a nice run guys, I hope to see you 'round. Hi TUs, In a few days I will be orphaning my package mediatomb, and will delete it too unless anyone is interested in maintaining it. It has been unmaintained upstream for over a year, and currently I don't have enough time to deal with the issues that keep cropping up because of this. At the moment it isn't even installed on my main computer. Thought I'd just let people know first, in case anyone else is interested in maintaining it, and to give my reasons for dropping it. Hi, Just a heads up to all users of broadcom-wl: a lot of people (myself included) have been reporting kernel panics at boot time after upgrade to current version, so if you're planing to upgrade, be sure to have a live cd around to chroot into your system. Hey all, Before I sound like anything I'm not! - I don't really care about politics - I hate drama - I try my best to conform to standards in contributed work - I appreciate everyone that contributes to Arch - I understand that one can become emotionally invested in their efforts That being said, another user created a package in the AUR called 'blink', which is basically a copy of my package, 'blink-darcs'. This wouldn't cause any issues if 'blink' built from an archive of sources and didn't use darcs to pull the sources, but that's not the case. What's your opinion on this? How should this be handled? -Max

Hello, I'm trying to upload and updated PKGBUILD for my package spring-framework but I'm getting the error message "Invalid name: only lowercase letters are allowed.". I've never seen this before and also this is the first PKGBUILD with package splitting I've ever tried to upload so I guess it may be related (makepkg doesn't complain though). The significant parts of PKGBUILD look as follows: pkgname=('spring-framework' 'spring-framework-doc') pkgbase='spring-framework' pkgver=3.0.6 pkgrel=1 ... build() { ... } package_spring-framework() { ... } package_spring-framework-doc() { ... } Am I doing something wrong? It seems tuxtype2 is a duplicate of tuxtype, currently tuxtype2 is an older version and the tuxtype PKGBUILD has a couple of problems. tuxtype: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=22661 tuxtype2: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=21441 tuxtype is clearly the better name, tuxtype2 is misleading. Another confusing aspect is that the name of the software is actually Tux Typing or TuxTyping, although the executable is tuxtype, so I guess that's ok. Anyway, I suggest the removal of tuxtype2 and hope that the maintainer of tuxtype will tidy up his package.

Firstly, Xonotic is on the rise and we're constantly bringing older Nexuiz players over (plus we're getting many new players), and eventually Nexuiz will die as the community doesn't even have a forum or such to rely on anymore. There has not been any new good maps for Nexuiz in over 2 years, plus the development for Nexuiz is totally dead.. Also, we're already planning another release (and will continue to do so often, probably in 3-6 month periods) so yes we do have more to come.... Clearly, with respect to which project is more important/promising to keep for the future, Xonotic wins. Secondly, considering gameplay... The gameplay actually is very much so similar to Nexuiz, with the same basic concepts/fast gameplay behind it -- we just have major improvements to the balance (weapons/player settings) and physics (movement/strafing) over Nexuiz (though again still similar) -- Most public players probably won't even notice a difference between the games other than that Xonotic looks better, which means the majority would have absolutely zero problems with switching. Thirdly, regarding bandwidth and disk usage... This is one of the main reasons I suggested removing Nexuiz as well in the first place. Xonotic currently takes about 950mb for a single install, however there are ways to make it smaller (e.g. more compressed sounds/music or more compressed textures) if needed.. Still, 950mb is not really that bad. Either way Sean, removing Nexuiz *AND* not having Xonotic just to save space is simply terrible :P Okay, lets just remove ALL the games.. THAT'LL SAVE SPACE FOR EVERYONE! In the end it comes down to this I think: Xonotic is the better, actually maintained and newer version of Nexuiz. Xonotic has a future (support, developers, new releases), Nexuiz does not. Nexuiz has a dwindling playerbase, Xonotic has an ever-increasing playerbase. Really though, whether or not Nexuiz should go is something which maybe should be decided later (like in a few months after our next release) -- However, Xonotic certainly should get in. I noticed I can't build any staging or testing packages in a clean chroot using the usual *-build scripts. My host system is using all stable packages (no pacman 4 whatsoever). Hello, I'm the maintainer of pidgin-knotify( https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=32919 ) in the AUR and i think the package should be removed as soon as possible. Today a user notified me about an unfixed bug, which allows remote command injection. It does not seem like this will be fixed in the foreseeable future. IMHO it would be best to remove the package. pidgin-gtalk-shared-status[1] should be deleted, as pidgin-gtalksharedstatus [2] is a better (my subjective opinion) name and pre-dates it, plus has more votes (and is actually up-to-date). Hi, Sven-Hendrik Haase is sponsoring my application as a trusted user. I thought about applying as a TU for some time now, I think the selection of packages provided by Arch is already great but there is always space for additional quality software in community and I hope to help with that. Here's a little background about myself: I'm a 28yr old italian guy, working as a system administrator and developer at a company that provides web-services, hosting and housing solutions. I first tried linux out of curiosity back when Mandriva was still called Mandrake, but I didn't like it at all and the RPM system made me cry tears of blood. I didn't linux again for a couple of years and then I tried gentoo. I was at my last year of high school and, being already a developer at heart, I wasn't scared but rather really interested by its packaging system that required extensive time of compilation but providing extreme customization possibilities at the same time. That was the time when I finally dropped Windows for good and I kept using gentoo for years as my primary os, while only checking out other distros every once in a while. In all this years I tried many other distributions both out of personal curiosity and for work: Suse, Red Hat, Fedora, CentOS, [K]Ubuntu, Mint, Debian, Slackware, Oracle Linux and of course Arch! plus some BSDs (FreeBSD and Mac OSX), but I still like Arch the best. Like I said, I am a developer at heart and I released some applications [1] as opensource, first as GPL but I then became more of a BSD/MIT guy. The most successful of them all has been a grafical frontend for embedded devices such as gaming handhelds which I developed (using SDL/C++) initially for the GP2X [2] but was later ported to many other devices by other developers/communities, called GMenu2X [3]. I am a confident developer who loves the Python language, but I also user very often PHP, C++, Bash (for scripts of course) and other languages. My work as a system administrator involves installing and configuring machines (Arch based whenever possible) with a variety of server softwares, and that's where I will probably focus as a TU. Hi people, I've been orphaning a list of packages in the few days, but I do want to find a maintainer first before orphaning them (*tsk* *tsk* for non-TU maybe if you're interested in some of them is time to apply to be a TU :D). Reasons to orphaning these packages are enough like (I don't need or won't use them on the near future, or I stopped recently to follow the development of them for whatever reason), so, if none of the TUs are interested on these packages and nobody wants to be a TU in order to maintain them, they will unfortunately go to AUR waiting for a new maintainer. Hi, Due to Oracle's recent and absolutely unforeseeable new plans with MySQL, I thought it might be a good opportunity to put mariadb into community for those that depend on MySQL. Mariadb is designed to be a drop-in replacement for MySQL and as such I wondered whether it would make sense if mariadb replaced MySQL. Mariadb also conflicts with MySQL files which at least necessitates installing them to an alternative path. I'm willing to maintain mariadb in community. I'd like opinions on this. -- Sven-Hendrik

Hi, I just noticed that there's an AUR package called webfonts [1] which is the same as the pre-existing ttf-google-webfonts. The submitter noticed his mistake the same day (see the package comments) but despite prompting has apparently (since the package still exists) not requested deletion here. As the package was uploaded and the comments made in July it seems the submitter is unlikely to make the request themselves, so I've taken it upon myself to request the deletion, I've also CC'ed the submitter in case they're not subscribed to the list. Hi, Part (Mateusz Herych) decided to sponsor my TU application. My name is Bartłomiej Piotrowski. I live in Szczecin (Poland). I learn and work here. I'm a Linux user since 2005 when I bought Suse 9.3 on 4 CDs. My hardware was too cheap to run it comfortably, so I gave up. I changed my computer in 2008, and after a year with Ubuntu and Debian I decided to install Arch. Arch is a perfect distro for me for many reasons - it has clean dependencies, it's bleeding edge and I don't need to compile anything (but if I want, it's not a problem). I forgot to mention KISS and the great community. It's just obvious to me. ;) I maintain 21 packages in AUR[1]. Only 3 were submitted by me, and the rest was orphaned and/or untidy - corrected by me, now they follow packaging guidelines. Every package has some votes and is tested on my machines. One of them, mplayer2[2] was taken to [community] by Stéphane Gaudreault. I was also contributing to it from time to time. I'm a coordinator and (the only one) Polish translator of Arch projects in Transifex[3]. Pacman translation is not ready for the 4.0 release yet, and I hope it will be done in some time. I had to skip dev/TU specific strings in my AUR translation - it's hard to translate something without knowledge about context. I help people from the Polish community board. When Polish Wiki works (now it doesn't), I translate small articles. I know basics of C, C++ and Perl, but I'm not a programmer. I juggle between school and sysadmin job in a small hosting[4]/shell[5] company. (We currently work on the website.) I (co)administer 5 machines, 4 Debian ones (2x hosting, Nagios, and Xen) and 1 Gentoo one (shell). If I become a TU I would be interested in adopting simple-scan and mpdscribble in [community]. That's all, I hope I mentioned everything. I took over the maintenance of hoh. The problem is that makepkg uses wget to download the sources, but wget gets disabled upstream via .htaccess. I contacted the author, he said, he has no sufficient permissions to change this on the webserver where the files are hosted. The previous AUR maintainer of hoh solved this issue simply by hosting the file on his site (which is allowed, settled through email with the author). Spoofing the user-agent in with 'wget --user-agent' or using curl works ok. My question is, what is the recommended way now. Should I host the file somewhere, or should I modify the PKGBUILD so that it downloads and unpacks the source manually, or is there another way I overlooked?

good day! recently i experienced some wild out-of-date flagging without any comments or even backupped reasons for codelite [1] from different users (even multiple times by the same) over the past two weeks. someone has been kind enough to help me unflagging these. however this is not only very annoying without any reasons (comments or email of the flaggers) whatsoever but also kind of lighted some concern about the carelessness of how people are flagging. they don't seem to even read the latest comments of the package or try to get a grasp of their reasoning ([1] is the stable version. they probably want the svn version which is also available). i thought about that and putting a fulltext description in the pkg-desc field is probably not what it's meant to be. so what came to my mind was a mandatory comment along with flagging to get an idea, why the person thinks it's out of date. that would make them think before flagging and also make them come back and read the response and not flag it out-of-date again. anyone else having similar issues? or am i overreacting here? regards, nem [1] https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=18809

There also exists telepathy-chat-handler-git [3] which predates [1] and [2], I will be updating this and adding an echoed warning in the .install file to ask people to switch to the correctly named packages. Once this is done I will wait a week or two for anyone using the pkgs to notice the warning then ask for all of the packages following the old names to be deleted. Hi, aircrack-ptw [1] can safly be removed. The ptw method is included in aircrack-ng. Aircrack-ptw is unmaintained for years now. In addition, it's not available on the official homepage anymore. Just clicked through all those madwifi packages. As ath5k superseded madwifi (and is actually included in the kernel), couldn't most of the orphaned and/or out-of-date madwifi-X packages be removed? It's just a suggestion, though. Hello, My name is Alexander Rødseth. I'm from Oslo, Norway, am 29 years old for two more months and have been using Arch for a couple of years. My first taste of Linux was a brief acquaintance with Red Hat over a decade ago, followed by Slackware and then Debian for a few years. Now I use Arch Linux both at home and at work, and it's my absolute favorite so far. My 62 AUR packages [1] have a total of 2519 votes, where 32% of the votes are for packages I submitted, while the rest are for previously orphaned packages, that needed a warm and caring home. I like how Arch tries to avoid fixing things behind your back, which I think is evident from the installation process, the package manager and the love for simplicity I've found in Arch users and developers alike. I enjoy programming in Go, Haskell, Python and C, try to contribute to open source projects with bug reports and the occasional patch (here is one for Blender [2] and one for Firefox [3]). When I was younger, I wrote a program for drawing icons and animating sprites. [4] I have a wacky homepage where I experiment with HTML5 and upload small CLI programs as I see fit. [5] I'm currently employed in Hue AS [6], a company that (roughly explained) sells a software engine for converting sound to 3D-graphics. I mainly work with developing and maintaining the internal systems for keeping track of licenses, builds and issues with the code (mostly written in Python). Luckily, I only program a minimum of C++. ;) I started working with programming before studying computer science, and I am on a lifelong track of continuing to learn stuff on my own. At least one of my AUR packages has been moved to [community] (lib32-libasyncns, moved by Jan Steffens in 2010, only have the e-mail as reference) and I've contributed to at least one package in [extra] [7]. I hang out and answer questions on #archlinux as often as I can. My goal with becoming a TU is first and foremost to help out with maintaining packages for the distro that I love and use. If I can find a bug to fix or a feature to add to pacman, or any other arch-centric application, I would like to do so. (Could an option for pacman to list all system-files that are not owned by a package be something?) I am grumpy before the first cup of coffee in the morning, other than that I'm generally happy, helpful and benevolent. I try to get a minimum of exercise and I'm in a stable relationship. I like the game of Go and creating music with jack, MIDI-synths and Arch, of course. Hi guys Lmms has been out of date for quite a while. It's been flagged out of date on June 13th. I emailed the maintainer Mateusz Herych telling him that only the pkgver and checksums have to be updated. He answered, that he's too busy in real life to take care of it. I don't know if this applies to many other packages and is "normal" for the community repo, but I think it would be better to find a new maintainer for lmms, since it's far behind (0.4.10 in the repos vs. 0.4.12 upstream). Hi TUs, the AUR still handles user logins and sessions in a insecure way that can easily be exploited. The last approach to use https by default was denied a long time ago. But I hope you guys will reconsider this decision. To prevent session hijacking, mtm attacks or whatnot I'd recommend the following: * Redirect all http traffic to https by default * Set session.cookie_secure = 1 in your php.ini * If you use setcookie() make sure to set the secure parameter to true * If you don't require any javascript to access your session data it's also a good idea to set all cookie to httponly (again via php.ini and if you use setcookie() directly) The optional https access as we have now wont work here. Even if you never forget to add the s to http when you login session data is also transferred via http. If it there is a chance that thunderbird-firetray-svn [1] could be orphaned from its current maintainer, please do. I ask this because this package is unmaintained since January and the current maintainer doesn't answer to e-mail. With the current version of Thunderbird this package needs to get its PKGBUILD updated every time a new version of thunderbird gets out in order to work. Currently I'm posting comments with modified PKGBUILDS in the AUR package page so people can get it to work. If it gets orphaned I will gladly adopt it. Sergej, We spent a week rebuilding packages to get tcp_wrappers out of [core] and out of the repos. Now I see that you've moved it back into [community]. What the hell? Were you going to start recompiling packages against tcp_wrappers and adding it back as a dep? Not acceptable. We all made this decision as a team, so I'm not sure why you're trying to fight us. As it claims to be "Transitions for cinelerra mostly from akirad and OpenShot", I've uploaded a PKGBUILD cinelerra-swtc [2] containing the akirad transitions. I think cinelerra-transitions should be deleted as it is no more usable. I don't know if it makes sense to merge votes with cinelerra-swtc as it is only a subset of cinelerra-transitions. There is 5 different packages on AUR: jboss-web [1] : version 2.1.9 jboss [2] : version 5.1.0 jboss4 [3] : version 4.2.3 jboss6 [4] : version 6.0.0 jboss7 [5] : version 7.0.1 While I may understand the need for older versions in some case (is there?), the naming scheme make little sense to me. Why jboss [2] is not the latest version (ie 7) ? jboss-web [1] does not seems right either. What do you think ? qtiplot-newest (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=47810) simply intends to update versions numbers quicker than the repository. I'm not sure what the rules are surrounding this situation. uqm-new (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=51672) has similar intentions. libmowgli-new (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=47375) does the same thing and is currently orphaned. libdrm-newest https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=22973 does the same thing and is actively maintained. libksba-latest (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=50960) did the same thing but "Libksba 1.2 is now in [Extra]. This package is no longer required." and has subsequently been orphaned. tremulous-updated (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=21426) does/did the same thing (the tremelous project hasn't been updated since 2009). libdvdnav-new (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=17355) does/did the same thing (the project hasn't been updated since 2008). telepathy-glib-newest (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=50140) also does this. It is currently orphaned. The submitter says in the comments: "This package will be needed until telepathy-glib on extra is updated to 0.15.1." lyx-newest (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=48936) looks like it does the same thing but has changed a few couple flags in the process. I'll edit the original duplicates list once these packages have been processed by a TU. An acnchess-git package does not yet exist but acnchess-svn only has 2 votes anyway and acnchess does exist. vulturesclaw (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=14157) and vultureseye (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=520) have both been replaced by vulture-nethack (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=48815) due to project name changes (Source: http://www.darkarts.co.za/vulture/about )

So someone uploaded a copy of my PKGBUILD for [1]libpng12 with the only changes being a name change (to get it into AUR) and marked himself as maintainer and made me a contributor. netmaze (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=1842) - Very old (1996) unfinished multiplayer game. 2 votes, no maintainer, PKGBUILD not updated since 2005. fxsudoku (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=Merge/4053<https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=4053>) - Dead project, dead source link. Mirrors exist but it only has 2 votes, no maintainer and the PKGBUILD hasn't been updated since 2006. Lastly, what is the 'policy' around old games and putting a link to the actual game data? Some people would class it as abandonware but if it is still sold then surely it isn't abandonware and is just piracy. For example hmm2 (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33015) doom2 ( http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33036) and dune2 ( http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33037) all have a source link to the rar-ed game data at oldgames.ru.

Hi all, I'm running into segment fault when starting skype (from [multilib]). After some tests, I notice that when i uninstall lib32-gconf, it seems to solve the problem. Can someone reproduce the error for me? Basically 1- Have installed skype and lib32-gconf 2- Run skype (error expected) 3- Uninstall lib32-gconf 4- Run skype (success expected) Thanks -- Rafael
