Helloooo, So I've been thinking about this for some time now and I finally decided to ask the ones who know the best: would it be enough to only have 'nvidia-beta-all' and 'nvidia-all' in the AUR to replace all those nvidia-ice, nvidia-bfs, eg. packages? (Decluding nvidia-utils*, of course.) As far as I can think of, I can't see any downside(s) (whatsoever) of using those *-all packages instead of those 'specifc-kernel' packages, since they do in fact auto-detect all the kernels on the system. Now to the important part: what do you think? Det

[aur-general] Dealing with python-* versus python2-* packages

I started maintaining some Python 2 packages that currently use the python- prefix, but need to be renamed to use python2-. Python 3 versions will soon come out, so I don't want people using the python-* package until then. I want to still have the packages in the AUR so that someone doesn't accidentally recreate the python-* package. How do I make sure that people don't use the python-* packages until it's appropriate? -Aaron DeVore

I created a basic gtk3 package in AUR, though later I noticed that there is a gnome-unstable repository, with gtk3 in it. Please delete my gtk3 package in AUR, I don't want it to start conflicting with gnome-unstable things and it is also redundant as it turns out. So I guess it is probably unwanted, or else let me know and I'll keep maintaining it until it gets stable. Thank you and sorry for the trouble.

i am requesting that stormlib become orphaned, and stormlib-linux be deleted. stormlib-linux (21638) appears to be a duplicate of stormlib (21634), and both packages are unbuildable, as the stormlib source archive which both aur packages compile from has been altered. i sent an email to the package maintainer, zarra (8415), regarding updating his packages, and have yet to receive a response. also, a user commented on the stormlib package with an updated PKGBUILD file on september 23, 2010, though it appeared to go unnoticed by the maintainer. thanks, arch users!

Hello, I would like to drop the multiget package from [community] for the following reasons. - the tarball does not build. The error consist in a missing header file and was reported twice on upstream bugtracker without an answer - the latest svn-checkout builds, but the revision number is still low, it is 3. So what do you think? Should I upload a svn-based PKGBUILD or drop the package? In svn there is a desktop file, which never made it to the tarball. This would at least allow me to remove multiget from the list in FS#23387. Regards Stefan

Hi TUs, VCS PKGBUILDs in officials repositories should use a snapshot of the project and shouldn't fetch the sources directly from git; neither the snapshot tarball created by git (checksum changes every time). In [extra], we already do that storing the snapshot at ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/other/ . This is useful when a project dead or when website is down too. Then, we just set up ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/other/community/ , so our TUs can store their snapshots. Please fix your PKGBUILD to use it, but also please *do not* abuse of it: few space left on sigurd. Cheers. -- Andrea

IgnorantGuru doesn't intend to continue maintaining the paccheck package, which is now broken after the pacman 3.5.1 upgrade. I wrote an updated version which can be used with the new pacman release. Hey, There's been some discussion between me and the maintainer/submitter of 'bin32-google-earth' (srabd) as to whether 'google-earth' should finally replace 'bin32-google-earth'. He disagrees. In his oppinion the "bin32-" prefix should always be used when the package being offered is a "32-bit only" one. I in turn think that the package should be removed in the favor of 'google-earth' that you can install for both archs and where you could say eg. in the 'pkgdesc' that the package provides 32-bit binaries (for both archs). It is not as much of a problem for me to have 'bin32-google-earth' existing in the AUR as long as the other one didn't. It's redundant to provide otherwise the same application but the other package provides it for i686 only. So what should be done? I'm not a TU and neither is srabd - but you are. [aur-general] New dbscripts and devtools releases

Hi all, I have just updated dbscripts and devtools. The new epoch variable intrduced in pacman 3.5 is now supported and $repo.files databases are now in sync with the actual repo db. Devtools now optionally uses btrfs snapshots to create a build environment and also works better with multiple users. Archbuild has now to be run directly via sudo. Hello, Over on the rtl8192se package[1], we have been discussing how to best support DKMS in packaging (at the AUR level), and I would like to ask for wider and more experienced comments. I have put my thoughts here and in more detail on my personal Arch wiki page[2]. Thank you. = DKMS Overview = In case anyone doesn't know, DKMS[3] is "Dynamic Kernel Module Support", a Linux technology from Dell that basically re-builds drivers for you when the kernel changes. Big Pro: It is a pain to remember to rebuild some drivers after a kernel upgrade or change, especially crucial drivers like wireless or video card. DKMS automates this process, is robust and used by many distros. Big Con: It complicates the packaging process, and introduces an additional "layer". Primarily, I hope that I can show the Con can be greatly reduced, and the Pro is so valuable it should be considered the suggested way to build kernel modules. Secondly, I hope to get feedback from more experienced packagers. = Packaging DKMS = DKMS is great. I'd like to see it incorporated more in Arch. One way to do so it to provide robust and useful DKMS-enabled packages as an alternative to the "vanilla" driver packages. Another way would be to build in DKMS in the driver package by default, and only "activate" it if the user has dkms on their system. In either alternative, more explicit and comprehensive packaging guidelines would be beneficial. Right now, when it comes to DKMS and the AUR, we generally have 2 packages: a "vanilla" package (ex: rtl8192se) and a "DKMS enabled package" (ex: dkms-rtl8192se).[4] My proposal is to package DKMS support into the "vanilla" package, and let the package .install file determine whether to let DKMS control the drivers or not. In this proposed scenario, there need only be one driver package. Here are the sample files: A sample PKGBUILD.[5] A sample install.[6] A sample dkms.conf.[7] Here is basically what happens: The package installs like normal, with the addition of the source code. In the .install file, if DKMS is present on the system, we set it up for DKMS to take over the drivers, calling one dkms_<event handler> from each needed corresponding "vanilla" <event handler>, and overwriting the installed driver. Since DKMS will only overwrite a file we just installed, pacman can still track what package owns the file. We do the reverse when uninstalling. = Pros = DKMS means the user need not remember to rebuild drivers after a kernel update or for a different kernel running on the system. 1 package can support DKMS and non-DKMS users If there are clear guidelines for DKMS packaging in AUR, more modules will pick it up, enriching Arch = Cons = Slightly more complicated PKGBUILD Source code installed (although many users keep the package on disk as it is now because they need to manually rebuild the package after an update) More complicated install file (but still template-able and very similar to the existing install file) = A further note = Everything across all the necessary files (PKGBUILD, install, dkms.conf) can be "templated" so the packager need not manually update the names/versions across multiple files. I have a very simple example script that generates the install file and the dkms.conf from the information in the PKGBUILD and a install.template [8]. = Conclusion = DKMS reduces the complexity of knowing what package a user should install for what kernel, and remembering to rebuild modules after a kernel change by moving that complexity into the packaging process. DKMS offers a great benefit to users at a small cost to packaging and should be made a recommended practice when packaging kernel drivers. Hello, It was a few things I could not explain with bluez and udev. When my system start killswitch off and i toggle killswitch after, bluetoothd is auto started. When my system starts with killswitch on, bluetoothd is not started. (a bit confusing) After adding hooks in rc, bluetoothd refuse to start at boot because it needs dbus! If I searched on google before trying to debug I saved a few hours: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=112161 So, this situation is a bit confusing, so why do not remove /lib/udev/rules.d/97-bluetooth.rules? >From my test bluetoothd, doesn't kill itself when it's run by /etc/rc.d/bluetooth. Hi, I will disown some of my packages in community. If anyone with access to community wants any of the packages, just adopt them, otherwise I will move them to the AUR for anyone to grab in 2 days (March 24th). perl-ppi - I don't use this anymore and no one has bothered to mark it out of date so not a lot of people probably use this. perl-params-util - Pulled in as a dependency for perl-ppi. perl-task-weaken - Pulled in as a dependency for perl-ppi. pyroom - Upstream development has halted, last release was 2 years ago. It seems accidentally commiting package binaries is an easy error among new TUs. A simple way to keep this from happening: svn propset svn:ignore '*.pkg.*' . It does not occur often (only twice in the last year) but why not use the tools we have to their fullest. -Kyle http://kmkeen.com

Hello, I do not know if this is the right place to post this. I maintain the eduke32 package in the AUR, and it was recently marked as out of date. This is incorrect as the most current "stable" non-development tarball is from July of 2010. I noted as such in the package comments after it was marked out of date. Can a TU please unmark it? [aur-general] TU application (Kyle Keen)

Hi guys. I am Kyle Keen (keenerd) and am applying to be a TU, sponsored by Xyne. You might remember me from a past application three months ago (1). Very little has changed since then, though I do have a few more packages (2). I also started up the first AUR mirror (3), which has allowed me to prototype silly things far far away from any place I could do damage. Some smaller new developments have included jshon (4) (a parser I wrote just because greping the AUR's rpc.php results is painful) and wiki-search (5), a bit of bash to make arch-wiki-docs useful as a stand alone resource. One long term goal would be to get the wiki-search script included with the wiki-docs package. A very long term goal would be to polish up some of the features from AUR3 and get them into the real AUR. Short term, Thomas Hatch has expressed a desire to have two of my packages (pacgraph and zeromq) in community. I've been plugging away at getting the remaining bugs (python3, pacman 3.5, manpage) out of Pacgraph to make this a possibility. ScrotWM should probably also be moved, as it is becoming a more popular window manager. I am also eyeing the request for an ABS maintainer, assuming I can figure out the existing issues. Hi, Please delete libiconv and nepomuk-playground-svn entried from the AUR. Regarding libiconv: the files and functionalities it provided are now part of glibc. Having a package that conflicts with glibc does not make sense. Regarding nepomuk-playground-svn: the code moved to KDE's new git repository and was renamed at the same time. Package foo exists in [extra], and foo-devel in the AUR. foo-devel is obviously based off unstable tarball releases (otherwise it would be foo-git, foo-svn, foo-hg or similar). So let's say foo is at version 4.0 (stable), should foo-devel stay at 3.9 (the last beta/rc/unstable release) or update to 4.0? Just a general question. My gnucash-devel package is currently pretty much identical to the one in [extra], and it does seem a bit unnecessary because the project itself does not currently have unstable releases.

[aur-general] AUR 1.8.1 - Can No Longer Upload Packages

Prior to AUR 1.8.1 being deployed, I could upload a *.tar.gz containing my PKGBUILD to AUR. Now with AUR 1.8.1, here I am trying to upload an updated PKGBUILD which I have verified does exist within my *.tar.gz - yet the AUR web-interface refuses to acknowledge that my PKGBUILD exists as I get stumped with *"**Error trying to unpack upload - PKGBUILD does not exist." *Does this sound like a possible bug with AUR 1.8.1? I would like to think I have been quite diligent with the whole AUR process, but as I said this little road block has got me stumped with AUR 1.8.1 -- Tony

This is duplicating my work and makes in the same time is hard for users to test the future gnome 3 version and updating to gnome-unstable/testing/extra at some point. [aur-general] Gzipped kernel modules

I am the maintainer of libguestfs in the AUR, and to run it uses insmod to load kernel modules into a specialized vm. The problem I am running into is that insmod cannot load the new gz kernel modules, so I unzipped them all to see if that would solve the problem, but now insmod does not seem to load them in the correct order. Does anyone know of a way to get insmod to load gzipped kernel modules? Or is there a way to install the latest kernel without gzipped modules? -Thomas S Hatch

I have created a new package build for SVox Pico, a small speech synthesis engine, and I'm in the process of submitting it to AUR. I must choose a category on the submission page. SVox Pico consists of a library for producing speech output as well as a utility that converts text on the command line to a .wav file. Which category is most appropriate for such an application? The following package is obsolete and I believe should be removed: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=27279 grub2-gfxmenu-overlay The following packages are a little less clear, but in the end I believe should also be removed, as they have a few problems: They rely on grub2-gfxmenu, which is obsolete. Grub2 was supposed to take gfxmenu patches upstream a while ago. I don't know if it did + whether or not these still work after tweaking the pkgbuilds accordingly, as I have since switched back to the old grub. It seems after a very long time, nobody has come forth to say one way or another on any of the pages. It wouldn't much matter anyway, however, unless someone has backups of the theme files somewhere to upload to a different host of their own. The urls all of the theme packages try to download from are now broken and have been for quite some time, as they were kept by a friend of mine a while ago who had no further reason to keep up his hosting services. I just wanted to let AUR helper authors (or other AUR enthusiasts) know that the PKGBUILD URL has changed on the AUR. All AUR helpers should update your code. I knew the AUR was updated recently but I did not realize that the URLs were changed for PKGBUILDs until I looked carefully at the AUR and the new patches. I found out earlier today and wanted to help others who might wonder why their AUR software slowly starts to break. The old scheme was: /packages/<name>/<name>/PKGBUILD The new scheme is: /packages/<name>/PKGBUILD Fun facts: Packages that were uploaded before the change still have an extracted package directory (/packages/<name>/<name>). The old packages also have a copy of their PKGBUILD in the new location.This means they have a PKGBUILD in both locations. Once a package is uploaded the old package directory is deleted so only one PKGBUILD remains (/packages/<name>/PKBUILD). So all packages uploaded after the change use the new PKGBUILD URLs. -juster

Well, I'm addressing current blacklisting issues with the AUR [1]. I noticed that some of the packages in the official repos have AUR packages as provides, some of them (well, at least one of them, didn't search for more) were even added due to FRs [2]. Yesterday the AUR went down. Toofishes made a comments in #arch about restarting the server. Since this, encoding have been horribly broken. Nothing is UTF8 any more. Here is a small list of broken pages: zeitgeist, yamagi-quake2, gcc34, sendmail, l-seed, surl, open-sasc-ng, splashy-full, biblatex-biber-git These just have glitches in the comments. Visit them with a browser and you'll see � (block/question mark) everywhere. Some packages also have non-utf8 in the description. Since a short time ago I sometimes get some messages from my router that it has detected and protected me against a hacker attack, when I was on AUR or updated my system. I don't know when it happens exactly, but it doesn't happen always. Hey there Archers, I decided to work on this little project over the weekend. It is a complete git clone of the AUR from the source and it will be updated regularly (at least once a day) though probably as frequent as 30minutes (please see `Side Notes' for explanation). What this means is that history for the AUR will now be possible! Also, for those of you wanting to have an abs like tree for all of the aur, it is now possible. I hope this opens up new opportunities, and new possibilities for everyone. Hi, I recently found that wine doesn't run update-desktop-database (FS#22882) but that's not the only package with this issue. I tested all my installed packages with this command: for i in $(grep -Rl 'MimeType=.*/.*' /usr/share/applications/*); do pkg= $(LANG=C pacman -Qo "$i"); grep -L update-desktop-database /var/lib/pacman/local/$(echo $pkg | cut -d\ -f5)-$(echo $pkg | cut -d\ -f&)/install; done The result was that at least these packages don't run update-desktop-database although they install Mime associations: extra/chromium extra/evolution extra/mplayer extra/openjdk6 extra/qt extra/sound-juicer community/mplayer-vaapi community/shotwell community/virtualbox community/wine There are probably many more broken packages which I don't have installed. I tried to get these via pkgfile but didn't succeed. I really wonder why namcap doesn't do any checks on this. -- Matthias Dienstbier

Hi, I have CC'd this to aur-general as this concerns all CPAN packagers on Arch. CPAN package versions are a mess on Arch Linux. It seems that many if not most CPAN packagers on Arch are unaware of how CPAN deals with versions and thus they do not correctly translate the CPAN version. Most of the time a naive translation is used instead, and this prevents Pacman from working correctly. To give an example, CPAN considers "1.15" to be a later version than "1.23.0", whereas Pacman will consider the latter version the newer version. This is because "1.15" is short for "1.150" on CPAN, whereas "1.23.0" is short for "1.023.0". This can be confirmed using the "version" module[1]. I have written a simple Perl script[2] that addresses this issue.* It accepts CPAN versions as command-line arguments and prints out standardized Pacman package versions. The package versions enable Pacman to correctly compare CPAN packages, e.g. when resolving minimal dependencies. I propose that the script be packaged and made an official tool for Perl package developers.** It should also be included on the Perl Package Guidelines wiki page[3]. I hope that this will be seriously considered as it addresses a real issue. Tools that generate CPAN packages for Pacman (e.g. Bauerbill) cannot work properly when there is no consistency in how Arch packages are versioned. Please note as well that this is completely separate from my previous (and continued) contention regarding the "provides" array of CPAN packages. [aur-general] How to handle installers in PKGBUILDs

Hi, I am already maintaining a couple of PKGBUILDs and wanted to add one for CellDesigner, which is used to model biochemical pathways. The download is only available as binary package with its own installer. Now, I thought that I could use the installer inside a PKGBUILD with $pkgdir as root. However, the installer cross-references some files in others with absolute paths, i.e. when the package is installed it still links to the build dir instead of the system dir. Because of the way the cross-refs are inserted, simple sed'ing these does not work. The obvious solution would be to use fakeroot/chroot in the $pkgdir and use to to emulate a root directory structure. My question now is: (1) am I on the right track and (2) is there any standard way to do this in PKGBUILDs? I couldn't find any sample PKGBUILDs concerning this issue and the ArchWiki contains no information either. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers, Michael

This can be cat:ed from the file and piped to tar. This is what the installer does Open it and you see how to cat the contents and what else might ne needed

Hi, fellow Archers, I feel a need to express my support to the opinion stated by Greg Imreh and Thomas Hatch. There is an unique relation between the contributor/maintainer and the PKGBUILD. This relation calls for respect. So please TUs/devs act as people and show it by letting first the contributor/maintainer know, that you are about to adopt a PKGBUILD to the binary repo. Surely adoption in the repo by itself is greater good for the package and Arch and therefor goal of every maintainer, so there hardly will be objections from the maintainer, but just taking it without a word is very rude. There would be no package to adopt, if there was not for the AUR contributor/maintainer. To Angel Velasquez: the nature of the relation is not like an ownership, but more like an authorship. Is it that much to show your respect to the author by a polite question? After all we are people, not mindless machines nor animals. Hey, folks! In consequence to recent deletion requests concerning the pre-built VirtualBox packages in the AUR, I decided that we should agree on what to do with them in consensus. The status quo is that the PUEL (Personal Use and Evaluation License) edition of VirtualBox is gone as of release 4.0, since people can now use additional features with "virtualbox" from [community] and a closed-source extension pack [1]. Instead, Oracle provides a pre-built VirtualBox package as the "successor" of the PUEL edition which, however, is exactly the same thing as the package in [community]. Afaik, the only difference is that the [community] package is compiled by us whereas the binary package is built by Oracle. We currently have at least six source tarballs based on that pre-built version in the AUR: - virtualbox_bin [2] - virtualbox_bin_beta [3] - virtualbox_bin-1 [4] - virtualbox_bin-2 [5] - virtualbox_bin-3 [6] - virtualbox-sun [7] virtualbox_bin-{1,2,3} are legacy packages. They still have a considerable number of votes. Following points emerged during earlier discussions: Pro deletion: - There shouldn't be any packages in the AUR that provide exactly the same stuff as another package in the official repos. - The [community] package is preferable to the AUR packages as it is maintained by some Arch dev and contains Arch-specific patches. People might also be confused by the high number of votes on virtualbox_bin. Against: - Why delete them? These packages still have AUR maintainers, upstream's still active, they don't break things, they ain't real dupes. - The binary packages can be used to check for upstream faults in case the official virtualbox package breaks. Hi all. I am now mirroring the AUR continuously, and am starting to open it up to public access. It is not a perfect byte-for-byte clone, as I felt like adding a few features :-) For now, there is an enhanced RPC database. It's got everything from the original RPC calls, plus some extra fields that people always seem to want. Access it through http://aur.kmkeen.com/rpc/name_of_package Yes, it is 100% static. This was the only way my little VPS could keep up with the beastly Sigurd machine. I've also got all the tarballs mirrored, but forgot to add the links to the RPC info (mirror/pkgname/pkgname.tar.gz). Will fix that shortly. There are also search indexes prepared for description, depends and required-by but the regex search is not open to the world yet. Maybe after I get some sleep. In addition, they are not directly related, nor depend on ezquake, so they should not have been named as such. I have created a new proper package to take the place of these two, with the work from the Quake Retexturing Project (QRP), quake-qrp-textures ( http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=45791 ). Hello official and inofficial maintainers and AUR devs. Following the discussion in aur-general, I think some automation could solve many issues at once here. Justin Davis' community-blacklist patch is an approach in about the right direction.... although in relation to the discussion concerning these prevailing [more-official repo] adoption issues, it seems that it does not yet go far enough at the moment. There should be a redirection or at least a [we're-now-official] error page showing sort of "congratulations and sorry for the late notice" to the yet uninformed aur maintainer, if his package is not reachable any more because it was adopted in said [more-official repo] - along with this could be displayed the comments of the former package. As well, it could just become invisible in the package's search, and marked with a "I saw this" button in the former AUR maintainer's package list. When that button is clicked, the package would sink quietly into the official repo without anyone needing to complain. The only hurdle remaining is, that a package isn't up for deletion any more when it gets adopted to [more-official repo], because that could just be automated by the repo's backend maybe? I'm probably going to download the aur source inclusively Justin's approach to look into this a bit further. Even though my development skills aren't exactly in line with such a task, and if someone feels more confident, one may look into it h{im,er}self. Hi, Recently a couple of my packages have been moved to Community but the process feels a little uneasy to me. My impression is that AUR is treated as a "second class" source of packages compared to the official repos. Not surprising, of course, so many packages have problems. This is also underlined by the fact that yaourt and other AUR managers are not allowed in the official repos, as "not to give the impression that AUR is official" (paraphrasing what I've read before). If there is indeed this divide, it feels more than little weird, that popular packages are just taken in to Community without even asking the current managers. It gives me the message that "AUR has no value, except when we say it has, at which time thanks for your work but now bugger off". I beg your pardon, if it comes through too harsh. I wouldn't have objected to have those packages moved. I, however, object to unilateral decisions. My proposition is: could it be a policy to check with the maintainer first before initiating a move? If someone wants to keep a package then they should be able to, especially since they could not have been doing such a a bad job if their package has become popular. Cheers, Greg

If I may add my two cents, I would go for GPL for PKGBUILDs, as it ensures stuff remains OSS. Though some broader discussion/voting may be good. And a compromise in form of selection from OSS licences when uploading, defaulting to one could not be that hard to implement. I read Licenses <https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Licenses> and PKGBUILD<https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PKGBUILD>pages at Archwiki and I've been wondering: case a software's license is one the common ones (ex: GPL), if the PKGBUILD should do some kind of reference (symlink) from /usr/share/licenses/common/GPL/ to /usr/share/licenses/${pkgname}/ or.. do nothing, maybe?
