You can block frambuffer in udev, but you have to block the driver by its modalias or other attributes (similary as if you tried to block sound through udev). For example, following rule would do the thing in my case, on one of my machines (that has some old ati card): SUBSYSTEM=="pci", ATTR{vendor}=="0x1002", ATTR{device}=="0x5446", OPTIONS="ignore_device" Or you could just use modalias. For example - provide auto generated 03-fb-block.rules by PKGBUILD in form similar to: ACTION!="add", GOTO="fb_block_end" DRIVER=="?*", GOTO="fb_block_end" ENV{MODALIAS}!="?*", GOTO="fb_block_end" ENV{MODALIAS}=="modaliases #1", OPTION="ignore_device" ENV{MODALIAS}=="modaliases #2", OPTION="ignore_device" ..... LABEL="fb_block_end" This should be blazing fast, without any need for extra logic in module loading scripts you call from udev. Moreover - if users don't want it - they can simply mv or rm that file. However you name the file, make sure it's parsed before big compound udev.rules you use. Btw - is there any reason why fbcon is built into kernel, instead of being left as a module (also, fbcon never loads automatically) ? Consoles are not taken until fbcon is activated - so maybe it would solve the issue with binary blobs having problems with active framebuffer driver. Just a thought (although as per fbcon documentation, depending on how well the framebuffer driver is written, consoles might end with garbaged screen w/o fbcon ; they shouldn't though). cheers Michal

Hi. I installed compiz-fusion to my gnome desktop and now I have two problems with it. First: no shadows around windows or panels (tweaked the window manager section under compiz control panel, but it didn't work). Secondly, the performance is very bad although games (e.g. urban terror) run fairly good. Also it seems that there is no option to use metacity styles (under ubuntu you can still use the same themes if I'm not mistaken). Just to mention, few days ago I had problems with compositing and openGL (I wrote a letter to the mailinglist), but after reinstalling and using nvidia-xconfig --composite option (no --add-argb-visuals any more on newer nvidia cards), the problem got fixed. So anyone having the same problem or know how to help, please let me know. Verner

Anyone know where the man page for xorg.conf is located? For some reason, when I try "man xorg.conf" I get "No manual entry for xorg.conf". I know there's a man page for it, though, since it's available online. (http://linux.die.net/man/5/xorg.conf) DR

[arch-general] Problem with compositing and openGL.

Hello everyone. Well I have problem with my 64 bit system. I have Nvidia 8400GS card with driver installed and enabled (it means that I get glxinfo and glxgears output), but compositing or any 3D games don't work (some openGL error). But at the same time I gan run simple 3D applications like glxgears. Also Nvidia driver starts correctly on startup (logo comes up) and compositing is enabled in xorg.conf. So any ideas on my problem? Might it be a 64 bit system issue? Just to add, under Ubuntu compiz and games worked just fine. Thanks, Verner.

[arch-general] next problem - where'd all the screensavers go?

After the upgrade to screensaver, a whole bunch of screensavers (e.g., BSOD) don't seem to be visible from within the KDE control panel screen saver module. Didn't see anything about it in either the forums or the bug tracker. Ideas anyone? TIA, DR

[arch-general] Qsynth crashes when clicking on buttons (Don't Panic)

Hi Folks. When I open Qsynth, I can rotate the various controls, but clicking on any of the buttons causes it to crash. For example I click on the "Options" button, the options window opens momentarily, but is blank, then Qsynth goes out to lunch. When Qsynth is opened without messing with the buttons, Qjackctl shows fluidsynth available as an input port, so that bit is working ok. Starting Qsynth on the CLI gives me this output, see below. [djmons@myhost ~]$ qsynth Warning: no locale found: /usr/share/locale/qsynth_en_US.qm Segmentation fault [djmons@myhost ~]$ I'm totally clueless about locales, but could this be the problem? Looking in /usr/share/locale there is no en_US locale. There are a bunch of en locales though (en, en@boldquot, en@quot, en_CA, en_GB) Looking at when I started Qsynth on the CLI as above, it shows a segfault, but the GUI for Qsynth is still showing. It's only when I click on a button that it crashes. Can anyone confirm that they have Qsynth working as expected? I don't want to post a bug report if this problem has something to do with locales on my install. Thanks for any help on this problem. Nigel.

[arch-general] Does anyone find Compiz Fuscion eat up all Alt keys?

Hi, all I found the CF in my machine ate up all alt keys besides the CF binding short cuts including Alt, such as Alt+F1,Alt+Tab,Alt+F2,etc. The scenario is when I enable compiz fuscion in my laptop T61p with nvidia newest driver, everything works fine and smoothly except no more application short cuts containing Alt. That means firefox doesn't have "Alt+F", "Alt+E", Emacs doesn't have "Alt+X". Especially for Emacs's "Alt+X", it's my most important things to use Emacs even use my laptop. So I have to disable compiz when I wanna use Emacs. I really have no idea what happened even after searching internet. I found when I use xmodmap to add Alt_L to the mod4 even the Alt_L and Alt_R is already set to mod1, the application short cuts work but the compiz short cuts retire... which means "Alt+Tab" doesn't work. The following is the output of my "xmodmap", I wish it would be helpful to identify the problem. Thanks.
