That package can't be used as is to build a repository package, because I have tried to rely as much as possible on its autodetection features for everything so that the resulting build fits to the machine it's built on. Slumslayer's packages (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?K=Slumslayer&SeB=m) would probably be a better base. To me, compiling from source is the best way to install mplayer since not everybody wants it to depend on the same things. It is also one of the rare programs for which I find optimization useful: I want my video player to be as fast as possible when playing HD video on my low-power laptop ;). These are the reasons why I will always install mplayer from the AUR (or ABS). Yet, a no-gui mplayer package in community would be good for those who don't want to bother with the AUR. I think you should also think about making a separate package for mencoder like Slumslayer did , because most people don't need it and it ads useless dependencies to the mplayer package (for example x264). I hope the new split packages can help with that. -- catwell

Hey There Guys, We'd love to tell you about the latest news. We were at our stand all day long on the very first day of 8th Free Software and Linux Festival. What we've done? * We've burnt 20 i686 and 10 x86_64 CD images and created paper CD cases and gave everyone for free. (unfortunetly we were only capable of doing 40 of them and 30 cases since especially the cases were so expensive as they were the best quality available) * Made some installations for people who needs help * Printed nearly 30 Turkish installation manual and gave them with the CD's.. * Created a "Arch Linux on Tap" concept and made it available over the network! :) They is very cool though since anyone can put the plug in and install Arch with our very new and fresh Arch mirror (that have i686 and x86_64 packages for core, testing, community, extra). We'll continue to do introduce Arch Linux to visitors of the festival and help them to discover the beauty! [arch-general] unable to associate wlan0 during network start

/etc/rc.d/network start fails with Could not associate wlan0 - try increasing WIRELESS_TIMEOUT and check network is WEP or has no security. However, running dhcpcd wlan0 when system is up works. I dont use wep but have wireless mac filters setup on the router and I've increased the WIRELESS_TIMEOUT in /etc/conf.d/wireless. Has anyone run into this recently? specs: 2.6.29-ARCH, x86_64 using iwl3495 driver, intel pro/wireless 3945abg Thanks -- ( adam stokes ) || ( adam.stokes(a)gmail.com )

[arch-general] synaptics edge scrolling

Hi, With the current xorg-server 1.6.1-1 the vertical scrolling using the edge of touchpad is almost unusable since it's too fast now. It's not possible to adjust it with both gsynaptics and 'Option "HorizScrollDelta"' in the xorg.conf... Thanks for ideas. My computer is ThinkPad R61. Cheers, Sergey

I'm guessing something is wrong with the extra repo on i686! Did Allan break it? Hi, I'm using lighttpd as http server, and it complains about permissions when I ask for a file on my public_html directory. Using strace on lighty I get: stat("/home/mauricio/public_html", 0x7fffceb2dcb0) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied) However, using ls: ls -ld public_html public_html/index.html drwxr-xr-x 3 mauricio users 4096 2009-04-13 19:41 public_html -rw-r--r-- 1 mauricio users 4075 2009-04-13 19:41 public_html/index.html Since 'r' is there in all users field, should not every user, including 'http' used by lighty, be able to read? [arch-general] network WTF

Got a bit of network weirdness going on here. 2 different Arch laptops, an old one and a new one, with completely different hardware (and also i686 vs. x86_64), but both are completely up to date with the latest repos. On the old (i686) one, "iwlist scan" works fine from the command line, as a non-root user. On the new one, no dice - I need to be root to get back results. What makes this even more annoying is that apparently some of the wireless tools I'm using suffer from this restriction as well. So on the old laptop, kwifimanager and knemo show accurate info about the current connection (bit rate, link quality, etc.) while on the new laptop these come up empty. Anyone have any idea what's causing this and/or how to work around it? Surely I don't need to run kwifimanager and knemo as root to do it. I'm guessing there's some obscure setting that's different between the 2 machines that's controlling this, but I have no clue what it could be. TIA, DR

[arch-general] Surviving without X

Hi, Do you think it's possible to live without X, replacing framebuffer for it, using packages available for arch? I imagine something like DirectFB or similar, using it when text is not enough. I think I could do with a browser and a pdf viewer, but I wasn't able to find a direction to follow to get that. Has any of you tried it already? Thanks, Maurício
