[arch-general] Stuff in /etc/cron.d/ won' work?

Hey there, I just noticed that I just couldn't get cron to properly execute stuff in /etc/cron.d/ no matter what I did. Let's say I have /etc/cron.d/lol with this content: * * * * * root echo "lol" >> /tmp/omg and restart crond afterwards, the crond log tells me that cron actually runs this command every minute without a problem. Sadly, this isn't the case and the file at /tmp/omg is created but remains without contents. In contrast, if I put an executable script to /etc/cron.hourly/lol with the content: echo "lol" >> /tmp/omg then the file at /tmp/omg fills up with lots of "lol"s after a couple of hours. It also works fine if I put it into the crontab. Now, I'd like to be able to use /etc/cron.d/ as well because it seems more transparent to me. Is there anything I do inherently wrong? -- Sven-Hendrik

Hi, I was trying to build ocaml package from source and since makepkg insists on presence of md5sums, I noticed that ocaml PKGBUILD is missing them. I'd fill a bug, but I'd forget about it before our bugzilla is launched again :-) Cheers Dan V.

[arch-general] GStreamer packages

Hello all, I see that some GStreamer packages have been outdated, attached you can find the PGKBUILD's with upgraded version and some other modifications detailed below. (Coudn't find if this is already discused) I also had a question about the gst-plugins-base/good/bad/ugly packages. I see that they are now split-up in 2 packages (ex: gstreamer0.10-base and gstreamer0.10-base-plugins). The second one contains the plugins depending on external libraries and the first one contains libraries and plugins without external dependencies. Typically a user has all gstreamer plugins installed, or at least he is using some plugins from every package. So I propose that we also merge these 2 plugins to make it easier to maintain and match upstream packages. Does this sound logic or do I miss something? Changes to PKGBUILD: gstreamer0-10: 0.10.24 - disable tests and examples gstreamer0.10-base and plugins: 0.10.24 - only LGPL - bump depends versions gstreamer0.10-python: 0.10.16 Gr, Thijs

Hi Please revert the last commit[#1], mounting /dev as NOEXEC is incorrect. This break nvidia GLX extension, vmware, mplayer and possible others programs that uses mmap() with execute privilege. PS: I guess that setting a size is "redundant" Thanks. Listmates, In case any of you pull php 5.3 from testing and suddenly have all your web apps die, I thought I would pass along a few heads-up to save you reinventing the wheel. First Peirre Schmitz put out a few notes on the arch-dev list that provided the answer, but there was a lot that had to be read between the lines to appreciate the notes. I run several php intensive apps (eGroupware, Gallery2, and to a lesser extent squirrelmail) all of which went south when the 5.3 upgrade occurred (well, all of php went south with the upgrade, but it was purely a new configuration issue). The short version of what is required to put php5.3 in place? (1) You need to use the php.ini.pacnew file you will find in /etc/php and merge your php.ini setting into it; (2) You will need to rework the following 2 settings: open_basdir = include_path = ".:..." Specifically, you will need to pay careful attention to any trailing '/'s you have on the path definitions (or prefixes in the case of include_path) because any trailing slash now prevents php from descending further than the specified directory in search of any includes or opens it is looking for. This is what really cost a bit to time to chase down. Note, the changes are not all 5.3, but the effect of the changes in 5.3 will expose any error in the entries. I had 5.2.9 running fine, but I had a few extra '/'s terminating search paths that somehow worked, but in 5.3 that wouldn't fly. (3) PHP5.3 split php for arch into a number of different packages. From Pierre's post: php php-apache php-cgi php-curl php-enchant php-gd php-gmp php-intl php-ldap php-mcrypt php-odbc php-pear php-pgsql php-pspell php-snmp php-sqlite php-tidy php-xsl You will need to install what you need and see the post in arch-dev for specifics of sqlite, (what's needed for Ver. 2, and Ver 3.), etc... (4) After you install the packages, you will now need to specifically uncomment any of the extensions you need to load or have loadable from withing php.ini. (eg. extension=mysql.so; extension=odbc.so; extension=openssl.so, etc...) After going through this bit of unintended learning, PHP 5.3 is working smoothly as far as I can tell, logs are clean, a few derprecated warning for things that will disappear in php 6, but other than that, nothing. The last issue I found in php 5.3 is it checks for the absence mysql_free_result after mysql queries and warns if it isn't found. This may be something I just didn't notice in the earlier releases, but it provided the opportunity to clean up a few. That's it, hope it saves somebody a few extra minutes of time. -- David C. [arch-general] Can I downgrade the nvidia driver w/o downgrading the kernel?

Listmates, I was going to test the nvidia driver fan issue by downgrading to the next older version of the driver with: [19:34 archangel:/srv/www] # pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/nvidia-180.51-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/nvidia-utils-180.51-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz loading package data... checking dependencies... error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies) :: nvidia: requires kernel26<2.6.30 But as somewhat expected, I got the dependency error shown above. It may not be possible, but if the nvidia install on arch just compiles the driver against the kernel, then I don't see why not. But then again if it is something that has changed from a module to a part of the kernel during that period of time (or something similar), then I could see why the older driver couldn't be compiled against the new kernel. Before trying anything I would regret, I thought I would ask. Is it possible? If so, how? Is "-d" OK here? Worst case, I just end up in runlevel 3 reinstalling the current driver again, right? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. [arch-general] Weird png corruption issue from Gwenview using "crop" -> "Save As" -> to a smb share

Listmates: Very strange bug with gwenview. I have bugged it with kde, but would like any confirmation and insight you might have that will help narrow the bug down. Here is the description pulled from my bug report: Gwenview has been completely reinstalled and the corruption still occurs. In fact, I have produced 3 corrupt files in a row using this scenario. The latest: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/openSUSE_bugs/kde4/screenshots/gwenview… Try this scenario and see if you still get a good crop: (1) Grab a screenshot of a window in ksnapshot (2) Choose "Open with" -> Gwenview (3) Crop the image, after pressing the final "crop", choose "File" -> "Save As" (4) Save to a smb share (5) Confirm file is corrupt or good and let me know. I tried saving the file with gwenview to my local disk and also saving it to the smb share. Both using the "File" -> "Save As" after a crop.
