After I synched, I rebuilt elinks-git against all the new libs I had installed. Then I noticed I was getting ssl errors whenever I went to an https: site. Turns out I needed to turn off the option connection.ssl.cert_verify: ## connection.ssl.cert_verify [0|1] # Verify the peer's SSL certificate. Note that this needs extensive # configuration of OpenSSL by the user. set connection.ssl.cert_verify = 0 Despite the "extensive configuration" warning, this was working before, but after rebuilding against openssl 1.0.0, it's not. It seems like Arch is currently offering Jack and qjackctl packages that are not compatible. The Jack authors changed one some command line options in 0.118. '-R' for realtime is no longer available as realtime is now the default, and the new '-r' means 'no realtime'. Qjackctl 0.3.6 is aware of this, but won't work well with Jack 0.116 which is still the one available from Arch. In other words, the update of qjackctl was probably a bit premature. [arch-general] libao (and other Xiph package) rebuild schedule?

A little while back I mentioned here that there were several xiph.org releases coming up. These did happen, and I flagged those packages out of date. Now that the openssl, heimdal, and icu updates are done, I'd like to know where these stand. Normally I'd not write such a "nag mail", but the only package with a soname bump (libao) is owned by an ex-developer (Hugo Doria), so I thought it might have been missed. I also had some extra details to provide. The full details of the upstream releases can be seen at http://xiph.org/press/2010/vorbis-surround/ and http://xiph.org/press/2010/libogg-1.2.0/ . Only libao has a soname bump; libogg and libvorbis have none. The new vorbis-tools also requires the new libao. libao isn't widely used, so it shouldn't be much of a rebuild. Another thing worth mentioning is that libao now (optionally) supports many more drivers/plugins out of the box. One of them is pulseaudio. This likely obsoletes the libao-pulse package currently in community. The only hassle here is not being able to do a straight split package since libao is in [extra] and libao-pulse (with pulseaudio itself) is is in [community]. That said, it should be workable to build the [extra] package entirely without pulseaudio support, and then build it again for the [community] package, installing only the pulse plugin from that PKGBUILD. libao seems happy enough to load any plugin it finds in its modules directory, whether or not they were built together (though I didn't test this with the pulse plugin in particular). vcut is now built by default (as upstream finally considers it ready for prime-time), so the explicit "--enable-vcut" can be removed from vorbis-tools' configure arguments. I've been using these upgrades since a few months before they were released, and they are solid. (Why am I personally so interested in these upgrades? One big feature, oddly missing from the release announcement, is that ogg123 now supports ReplayGain, making it a reasonable replacement for a bigger music player, at least for me. So vorbis-tools is the main driver as far as I'm concerned.)

I'm no longer a kde fan, I used to be until almost everything they changed for kde4 ticked me off... Over all I'm just as glad they did because otherwise I wouldn't have discovered E17 (or XFCE) which are currently my two main desktop environments. However, kde has some apps that I'm still addicted to: One of them is the old kde3x version of kaffiene for playing my music files. I never really embraced most of it's advanced features, and frankly I dislike using playlist files. What attracted me to kaffeine was when I discovered that with the kde3x version I could use the keyboard to do an: File->Open URL->PathToMusicDirTree Where PathToMusicDirTree is the top most directory of a multi directory structure that contains only music files and directories to more music files. And kaffeine would open not only any music files within "PathToMusicDirTree" but recursively any music files in any of it's subdirectories. I could add and delete files to and from this directory tree and know that the next "File->Open URL->PathToMusicDirTree" would result in kaffeine playing all of them. At most all I needed to do was to set shuffle and repeat options to enjoy my background music for as long as I wanted it. That is all I ever wanted of a music player... Since kde4 I've learned that I really need to build a playlist by repetitively using "File->Open URL-> NonRecursiveDir" until I've added each and every subdir of "PathToMusicDirTree" one at a time. Worse, I need to rebuild the playlist file every time I want to add or remove music from my files... But every time I've tried an alternative it either insists on making me work with playlists, or only wants me to control it via the {many expletives deleted}rodent pointing device. or both. Worse still with the version I added to my Arch install (extra/kaffeine 1.0pre3-1) the command "Playlist ->Save As" doesn't work. So I have to work with playlists I create from one of my other distros. Another odd thing about this version of kaffeine is that "File ->Play Audio CD" only likes to play the first track... Could somebody recommend another media player I could try that will let me create temporary music lists on the fly by typing the path to a parent dir containing multiple music directories??? One that understands keyboard commands for it's functions???
