[arch-general] bash variable PS1 confuses the terminal somehow

13 PROMPT_COMMAND=' 14 if (($?)); then 15 warn="^[[31mWARNING^[[m" 16 else 17 warn= 18 fi 19 date=`date` 20 PS1="^[[s^[[$(($COLUMNS-28))C^[[0;33m$date^[[u^[[0;31m$warn^[[0;32m[^[[1;33m\u^[[0;32m@^[[1;36m\w^[[0;32m]\$^[[m" 21 ' i'm using this PROMPT_COMMAND to set PS1 everytime it is played, it seems to work perfectly except later i found a strange behavior of the terminal, both in xterm under X and agetty under the console. for example, when under the console, i found the terminal column indicated by the bash variable $COLUMNS is 160, however, when i type some command about 50 characters long, the line which i'm typing wraps to the begining, and destroys what i typed earlier, this makes typing long commands really difficult...and everything is just fine when i just set the PS1 variable to a very simple value without escape sequences. anyone knows how to fix this?

There has been some recent change somewhere in the startup process that makes startup messages disappear once the process is completed and the login prompt appears. I had (and have) in /etc/initttab: c1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -i -8 38400 tty1 linux I added the "-i" to prevent clearing the terminal, and it worked. Not any more. Not even with Shift+PageUp. Anyone knows what changed? TIA Jorge Almeida

Skype doesn't work. Installing windows (virtual box) I thought that the problem would continue. when I do the test call in skype me back without allowing too much noise to hear what i record. and it's the same machine virtual and my arch. Hi, I am unable to run the java applet on the site keepvid.com(or any other video downloading site for that matter). I tried both firefox and chromium. I have openjdk6 6.b22_1.10.3-1 installed. Thanks.

When i start Windos in Virtual box get the following message error: The virtual box linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or ther is a permission problem with (dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executin rc.d setup vboxdrv as root. This package keepr trackc of linuex kernel changes andrecompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. [arch-general] Clojure 1.3.0 update and removal of clojure-contrib from [community].

Hi Archers, I have just pushed clojure 1.3.0 to [community]. A list of changes can be found at [1]. One major recent change is that upstream has split up the monolithic contrib package into separate sub-projects [2]. This means that clojure-contrib is no longer necessary for clojure 1.3.0 and individual contrib projects should be packaged separately into the AUR. [arch-general] ConvertXToDVD alternative for Linux.

Hi, One of the very few reasons that I still Dual boot windows is that I don't know how to convert media files from one format to another in Linux. On windows I use 2 very easy to use softwares namely FormatFactory and ConvertXToDVD for my needs. Can you guys tell me about any Linux alternative to that? I tried installing ConvertXtoDVD using wine. The main program installs fine but the DVD menu templates, though installed, aren't detected by the program and hence I cant use the DVD menus. Thanks.

[arch-general] Daylight Saving Time canceled in Ukraine, will Arch know?

Beginning this year, Ukraine is switching to year-round DST and will permanently reside in UTC+3 timezone (where it is now). Normally, the switch to UTC+2 would have occurred some time in October, but no longer. How would Arch Linux handle it for the users who do not have NTP configured? Would Arch somehow know not to switch the clock this year or should zoneinfo file for Kiev be updated to reflect this change and to avoid users' clocks being skewed?

[arch-general] What about packaging something like "emacs-goodies" in AUR?

Hello list. I found the package `emacs-goodies-el' quite useful when I was using Ubuntu, but Arch doesn't seem to have a equivalent package. I know I can install them myself, but it may be better to pack some of the most used into one package? So that most people could just install this, which is of course not very big, and get what they wanted.
