Last VLC package is giving me distorted sounds, not happening with vlc-1.1.7-6 from http://arm.konnichi.com/extra/os/x86_64/vlc-1.1.7-6-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz Or with *any other* program installed in my computer, just VLC after version 1.1.7-6 Anyone experiencing this bug? https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/25914 I think further investigation would be good, A 'it works for me' from one single person is enough to close the issue? Hello all, Since my (unknown) neighbour finally got smart enough to lock me out of his wireless access point (still unencrypted, probably filters on MAC address now), I got a Vodafone USB internet key, and even managed to make it work. But I've the impression that my current configuration isn't really optimal. The key identifies as 19d2:1013, and usb_modeswitch changes this to 19d2:1015. At that point I also get a new network interface called 'usb0'. So my first idea was that all I had to do was to configure and bring up that interface, but using netcfg to do this results in a 'No connection' error. But there are some strange things: 1. The 'Don't know what to do! Starting pppd and hoping for the best.' line from wvdial looks suspect. 2. The fact that I have _two_ new network interfaces. The existence of the 'usb0' one seems to suggest I don't need pppd at all, but how then to bring it up ? Any information / suggestions to improve this will be appreciated. Hi, How can I let my USB keyboard be a waker? I tried to add echo USB0 > /proc/acpi/wakeup to rc.local but, after boot, /proc/acpi/wakeup doesn't contain any USB related line. Regards, -- Bastien

[arch-general] Konqueror aesthetic peeve

I know this is a minor thing, but a) it's bugging me, and b) it's bugging me more that I can't fix it! :-) I thought someone here might be having the same problem and/or know how to help. Although I'm an XFCE user, I still use KDE's konqueror as my file manager. (Old habits die hard. Plus, I've not yet found a file manager that's better.) I use qtcurve as my widget style throughout my system - i.e., both with KDE/QT apps and with GTK apps - and so am able to achieve a uniform look to my UI, which I like very much. A few days ago, though, a recent pacman upgrade messed up konqueror's widget display and I can't seem to figure out how to get it back. Normally, konqueror displays like so: http://www.darose.net/KonquerorUnderKDE.png (Note the ">" icons in the sidebar on the left, for expanding the tree.) And konqueror still is displaying itself this way when I run it under any other DE (KDE, fluxbox, etc.). However, when I run it under XFCE (my DE of choice), it displays like so: http://www.darose.net/KonquerorUnderXFCE.png (Note the use of the windows-style "+" icons in the sidebar.) I find this situation very odd and irritating: 1) Why is this only happening under XFCE? 2) Why is this only happening in the *sidebar* portion of the window? (If you look at the XFCE screenshot, konqueror is clearly using the qtcurve-style arrow widgets in other portions of the GUI.) Anyone else experience this and/or have any idea what pacman update caused this and/or have any idea how to fix? TIA! DR

[arch-general] Adopting start-stop-daemon in archlinux

If you use Debian, you might have come across start-stop-daemon. It's part of the dpkg package and encapsulates all the knowledge, they learnt when dealing with starting and stopping daemons. It has plenty of features ranging from: * handling pidfiles more intimately (checking the pid files content, verifying that the pid given actually is the executable in question) * changing UID/GID * chrooting, nice-ing * retry starting if daemon dies * creating pid files when the process doesn't do it, etc, etc. curl http://clemens.endorphin.org/start-stop-daemon.c | less if you want to have look for yourself. It's a single C file. To me handling pid files correctly is the biggest win. The paradigm used commonly in arch PID=`pidof -o %PPID /usr/bin/executable` [ -z "$PID" ] && /usr/bin/executable is flawed and does not work reliably as shown here https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/17138 I propose to switch to start-stop-daemon and deprecate the method above. http://clemens.endorphin.org/sshd-start-stop-daemon.diff is an example of an rc.d script ported to start-stop-daemon. The paradigm -- to my personal taste -- is clean and simple. The diffstat is negative LOC-wise. Hi, I think bochs should add --enable-gdb-stub option when configuring. I build the modified PKGBUILD, It works. The pkgbuild script is in the attachment. Kevin, Could you please adopt my adives?

Hello there. Would your system still fail with empty .xinitrc? (mv ~/.xinitrc ~/dangerous_xinitrc && touch ~/.xinitrc) You don't need ampersand for fonts rehashing. Is that line is only one you have in your .xinitrc? Do you have system xinitrc? (/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc) Is it empty? I have a new arch install with basic X environment added and successfully tested. Following instructions here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fonts I installed "terminus" fonts, created ~/.xinitrc file and added to it the following lines as advised: xset +fp /usr/share/fonts/local xset fp rehash After this X fails to start with error: "/usr/bin/startx: Line 127: hostname: command not found" When ~/.xinitrc file deleted, X starts as before just fine. Could somebody help me to figure out what am I doing wrong, please?

I'm running pacman4 rc1 and everything seems to be working fine. My question is, I'm not in a hurry or anything, it's just a question. When will packagekit etc be updated to work with pacman4? As I said, I currently have no problems and simply ignore them on updates. Myra -- Life's fun when your sick and psychotic!
