Hi, I'm wondering, what amount of Arch users and developers use the mailing lists in comparison to the number of people registered to the Arch Forums? Can we have some basic mailing lists statistics anywhere posted? Personally, I prefer mailing lists, but I noticed the Forums traffic is order of magnitude larger than the traffic on the lists. [arch-general] can not login after upgrade

Hi all, I am running a fresh update X86_64 Archlinux on BTRFS. I left my box unused for near one month (15/05-12/06). I did a system update today, following all latest news: -first updated pacman - moved to systemd and libusbx, did all the updates. Everything went OK. -upgraded the filesystem with the --force option. No errors at all. When rebooting, I did not see the usual init process details with all services, going to the login prompt VERY quickly (a few sec). At the login prompt, here is what I have: Archlinux 3.4.2-1-ARCH (none)login: I can type whatever I want (all user names, or anything else), I am always back to the propmt. I can no more login. I dual boot with Ubuntu. From Ubuntu, I see my Arch /boot folder is empty!! I have no proposal in Grub2 to boot from a previous version. So now, what shall I do ? TY for any help, as I am a litle disapointed and first time with such a big problem.

[arch-general] Do packages built on libusb need rebuilding on libusbx? upsd won't stay connected over usb.

Guys, Update yesterday caused network-ups-tools to fail (upsd). I have 2 x86_64 servers running upsd. The one I did not update continues to work, but the one I updated yesterday does not. So I have a working install to compare to. I checked before updating yesterday and /var/lock and /var/run were both proper symlinks before running the filesystem update with --force. That leaves me looking at either libusb -> libusbx or udev/smartd-tools issues. It looks like there is an issue with the way usb is now handled. Running: $ sudo usbhid-ups -u root -DD -a nirvana_ups <snip> Trying to match device Device matches failed to claim USB device: Device or resource busy detached kernel driver from USB device... Hi, I have been observing strange issues when I switch between X and TTY. Here is the step-by-step story with details: 0. Login to tty1 and ttt2 1. From tty2 (not tty1), startx with either i3wm or Openbox 2. Launch 2-3 apps (e.g. urxvt, Firefox) 3. Switch back to tty1 (CTRL+ALT+F1) 4. Execute some shell commands in tty1 5. Switch back to X (CTRL+ALT+F7) 6. Observe no problems, no hangs, in Openbox the ALT+TAB and in i3wm the Mod+[jkl;] combination cycles through windows, etc. 7. Switch to tty2 (CTRL+ALT+F2) 8. See xinit output, hit ENTER once or more, the xinit output scrolls up 9. Switch back to X (CTRL+ALT+F7) 10. Now, observe strange problems with lack of response in both, Openbox or i3wm. WMs are not completely frozen, but somewhat partially. Neither Openbox ALT+TAB nor i3wm Mod+[jkl;] work. No reaction to mouse operations have no effect No reaction to i3wm Mod+SHIFT+Q, etc. I'm running updated Arch on Lenovo ThinkPad T400 with Intel graphics (xf86-video-intel driver, i915 module). Could the problem be related to xf86-video-intel driver? BTW, I have been observing slow rendering of Terminus font under i3wm [1] and it turns out the problem is in the most recent version of xf86-video-intel in the Arch repos [2]. [arch-general] Different encoding on tty's and X, solution (or workaround?)

I noticed today that my zsh-prompt in the tty's didn't show the same letters as in the terminal emulators. First I thought I might have a corrupted ~/.zshrc.local, but while it showed the correct encoding in geany as well as in the terminal editors in X, it showed a sequence of letters (sth like "ßäü") instead of "┌─" when editing it in the tty. Invoking 'locale -a' shows as possible locales "en_GB.utf8", while my locale in rc.conf was set to "en_GB.UTF-8". Changing the line in rc.conf to the locale given by locale -a and rebooting solved the problem. My questions: 1. Did I find a solution to my problem, or a mere workaround that might create more problems after future updates? 2. Is the incorrect encoding in tty's a serious problem that might deserve some warning on the forums or even an announcement, or rather something more or less cosmetic? 3. (Now I admit to be a newbie...) Is this problem maybe limited to zsh, or does it also affect the majority(?) using bash?

[arch-general] Bash/term takes long time at first run each boot?

When I run any terminal emulator for the first time after a reboot, it takes a long time for Bash to come up, the window is blank for 10-20 seconds. On a quad AMD X4 with 4G RAM. Started after updates, don't know which ones. Anyone got a suggestion, or a good way to diagnose? -- Jonathan E. [arch-general] about FS#30053 and systemd service/unit file in general

hi. So I was playing with an archlinux guest in vbox to learn a bit about systemd. And I found out that the gpm.service was broken. systemctl enable or systemctl start does not work for gpm.service. I looked for bugs and found FS#30053 https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/30053 I just copied and pasted the feature request from the bug report and added one more line and it worked this time. here it is. [Unit] Description=GPM daemon Requires=getty.target [Service] Type=forking EnvironmentFile=/etc/conf.d/gpm ExecStart=/usr/sbin/gpm $GPM_ARGS [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target I requested the bug to be reopened and it was denied. That's not the problem. The problem for me is the reasoning behind the denial: I quote "We don't want to be using Arch-specific service files, and anything with /etc/conf.d would be that. If you need to use special options, make a copy of the service in /etc and change it directly. As to the missing [Install] section, I'd open a new report." Systemd is made to boot/init a linux distro. But our distro here is archlinux and we are making archlinux package, right ? I understand we ship unpatched upstream package, but do we want to ship broken package so that they stay untouched ? For me, systemd service/unit file are just meant to be that, tailored to archlinux. Well, I am a newbie systemd user, so if this is required that we customize every broken systemd service to make it work, so be it.
