[arch-general] IPC slowness

Dear Arch, I've noticed a 20x slowdown on a simple IPC task on a couple of recently updated Arch systems. Here is a script to exhibit the problem: #!/bin/bash SCREEN=/usr/bin/screen $SCREEN -dmS x time $SCREEN -S x -X setenv A B $SCREEN -S x -X quit On my laptop, which is a slower Arch system, it takes about 0.4 seconds, with 0.2s for user and 0.2s for system. On a faster Arch system, it's 0.11s, 0.03s user and 0.09s system. On a *really* slow Arch system that hasn't been updated since August, it takes 0.015s (0.01s user and 0.00s system). On a Raspbian system it is 0.014s, and on a Debian-based virtual server it is 0.006s. In summary, the recent Arch systems are about 20x slower than the Debian systems for this command, but the August 2018 Arch laptop is just as fast. Any ideas what might be causing this? [arch-general] Any particular reason for daily imagemagick updates?

All, More an observation than a problem, but is there any security reason for the flood of imagemagick updates, or are we basically getting nightlies every time a commit is pushed? Example: 5 hours Update to 7.0.8.32 arojas 27 hours Update to 7.0.8.31 arojas 2 days Update to 7.0.8.30 arojas 5 days Update to 7.0.8.29 arojas That's 4 in the past 5 days alone and two within 24 hours. It's small enough that updates are no issue, it just seems odd that the upstream release cycle is really that frequent. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

[arch-general] Any objections to asking vim to fix PKGBUILD syntax highlighting?

I'd like to post the following issue at: https://github.com/vim/vim/issues/new Wanted to see if there were any objections from staff, like if even though the error highlighting is technically wrong, if it's desired to be left as-is to discourage 'pkgname' being a single element array or 'SKIP' usage when inappropriate, etc. (Below is in github markup.) Subject: Incorrect error highlighting in syntax/PKGBUILD.vim `vimfiles/syntax/PKGBUILD.vim` highlights two things as errors that it should not. As an example: the [valid official PKGBUILD file for gdb](https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/packages.git/plain/trunk/PKGBUILD?h… pkgname=(gdb gdb-common) ... sha1sums=(... 'SKIP') Specifically, it highlights in: `pkgname` the `(`, ` `, and `)`; and `sha1sums` the `SKIP`. `pkgname` is usually not an array, but in the case of split packages, it can be an array. See https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PKGBUILD#pkgname `sha1sums` is quite often a sha, but it can be `SKIP`, especially when given a `.sig` file or a git repo. [arch-general] pacman.log has no timezone information in timestamp

Hi! I just used the /var/log/pacman.log for the first time to give me the last date-time I did a system upgrade ('starting full system upgrade' in the log). There is no time-zone info in the time-stamp. It's also not UTC. Does anyone know if this is by design or a bug? Example Output: [2019-03-01 16:59] [PACMAN] starting full system upgrade Expected Output: [2019-03-01 16:59-05:00] [PACMAN] starting full system upgrade It's confusing when you travel a lot or use 'datediff'. --Florian

[arch-general] Problem with x11 keymap options

Hey, I've been trying to get my locale to work correctly, adn everythign else seems to be roughly correct (if I set grp:alt_shift_toggle with setxkbmap I can switch between my keyboards), but the option grp:alt_shift_toggle doesn't work unless I run the command manually. I've checked ~/.profile, ~/.bashrc /etc/profile and /etc/bash.bashrc (I think that's what it's called). No setxkbmaps or localectls anywhere. Jounrals and logs seemto be of little help, showing that everything is loading fine. Can anyone help me find out what's wrong? -- Regards, Juha Kankare

Hi all, I've setup a new arch install on a VM where almost everything runs as expected. Only gpg talking to key servers fails. Trying a key search results in: ~]$ gpg --keyserver hkp://pool.sks-keyservers.net --search-keys Alltag gpg: error searching keyserver: Server indicated a failure gpg: keyserver search failed: Server indicated a failure pacman-key --refresh-keys shows similar error. ~]$ gpg --version gpg (GnuPG) 2.2.13 libgcrypt 1.8.4 .. I made sure - pool.sks-keyservers.net is resolved - pool.sks-keyservers.net answers at port 11371 and 80 - gpg succeds key server interaction (--search-keys) from a neighbour VM (centOS gpg (GnuPG) 2.0.22, libgcrypt 1.5.3) - gpg succeds key server interaction (--search-keys) from the host (debian, gpg (GnuPG) 1.4.18) - gpg succeds key server interaction (--search-keys) from my home box,(archlinux gpg (GnuPG) 2.2.13, libgcrypt 1.8.4) any further ideas how to nail down this? -- Friedrich

Not sure why, but it was worth a shot. Any other way to automate this TZ=UTC for pacman so you don't have to type it every time. Maybe a wrapper script aliased to "upacman" or something? -- Regards, Juha Kankare
