[arch-general] 2 recommendations needed for installing Arch Linux

Hi :) I'm new to the list. I already received some hints from another Arch Linux mailing list. Sorry that my mail is formatted in HTML. When I tied to restore the distro I used before from a backup for the billionth time, I made a mistake and accidentally deleted originals and backups from ext4 partitions. Currently I'm even unable to boot any from my other Linux installs, so I'm using a Parted Magic live CD, resp. the web mailing thingy from my provider. I'll switch to Arch Linux because for my needs, audio productions, it could be easier to keep it stable than it is for other distros. I've got two questions. 1. What is a safe FS, that can be recovered? Ext4 seemingly isn't such a FS. The FS also should be usable for audio productions. Security regarding to multiple user usage, web access, server usage etc. are unimportant for a DAW. 2. For my main Linux I always prefer to use 64-bit architecture, but 32-bit architecture compatibility is needed. Is there something I should take care about when installing Arch Linux? Cheers! Ralf

Hello everybody, I would like to replace xz 5.0.3-1 with xz-git 20111203-1. I added provides([...] 'xz') to the PKGBUILD, but the dependencies for libarchive (requires xz>=5.0.0) are not met. Any chance I can fix that? -- Best regards, Chris

[arch-general] Mounting drives via nautilus stopped working after update.

Hi, After a recent update, I am unable to mount any drives by clicking their names in nautilus side panel like I used to do before. I use awesome wm and start it via slim which itself is started via the inittab method. I have dbus installed and it starts up automatically at boot. Also in my .xinitrc file I have ck-launch-session and dbus-launch before awesome. Everything used to work fine like this before the update. Now when I try to mount a drive I get the error not authorized. I am also in the group storage. I really like arch Linux but these stuff breaking on updates is what pisses me off. Please help me as this is affecting my productivity on my machine. Thanks.

I've just updated two computers that boot from external USB drives, and now I get a "Error: Unable to determine major/minor number of root device 'waiting 8 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-uuid/296...etc" I have tried to modify grub using by-id, just /dev/sdb1, but no way... [arch-general] Wireless LED stays on during suspend

Hi, I've recently installed Arch on my laptop and got a odd problem that I haven't encountered so far. Whenever I put my laptop into "Suspend to RAM" my wireless LED stays on, which is quite annoying. It probably doesn't use that much energy, but still I want to have nothing blinking, but the power LED. I investigated a little bit into it, and found out that the wireless LED stays on when at least one of the following devices is activated: Bluetooth, WWAN, Wireless LAN. This makes totally sense. As soon as blocking all three of these devices using rfkill, the LED turns off. I'm probably could now write a script that would get executed during "Suspend to RAM" using pm-utils. However before hacking around this, I would like to know what the expected way for this actually is. Doesn't a "Suspend to RAM" invoke rfkill at some point or at least shouldn't it try to disable such hardware? As I haven't experienced this issue with my former laptop, I'm not exactly sure whether this is a bug or a feature, so I'm glad about any input you give me on that. Best regards, Karol Babioch

[arch-general] USB Buffering Issue

Hello all, I've been having some trouble with USB drives in the last few months. When copying files onto a device, the copy appears to be instantaneous, but is clearly buffered by the kernel. If I unmount the drive, all appears well, but then removing the device results in corruption. In order to work around this, I have to run "sync" before unmounting the device. Any ideas what might be causing this, or how to fix it? It would be nice to get a *real* progress bar when copying large files, instead of a quick flash followed by a boring minute or more of staring at "sync". Paul

Hi all, I know systemd and lightdm are not exactly kosher on ArchLinux, but any help would be welcome. So, I just noticed that OpenGL is using llvmpipe on my laptop, and then I found out that the /dev/dri/card0 node doesn't have the proper ACL set to allow access to my user. Also my user is not in the video group - since I've learned that's not necesseary in "modern" Linux configurations. Considering that I'm running systemd and using lightdm as a login manager - my question is, what subsystem is responsible for settings the ACL: - ConsoleKit - PolicyKit - systemd - lightdm ? [arch-general] Updated scripts for removing duplicates from /var/cache/pacman/pkg

All, I don't know if anybody uses these scripts, but I've updated them to handle the stray packages with the nonconforming filenames in the form of: <name>-num-num-arch.pkg.tar.xz I've additionally added a check to optimize the scripts a bit by checking for at least the presence of one actual duplicate before executing the removal code. Prior to the overhead of the nonconforming file check, it wasn't really needed, but after the nonconforming filename code was added, you get a meaningful time benefit from the check. The scripts are here: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/arch/scripts/fduparch.sh http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/arch/scripts/fduppkg For those not familiar with the scripts, they simply parse the files in /var/cache/pacman/pkg and move any duplicates (old versions) to a separate directory (/home/backup/pkg-1 by default). This does 2 things: (1) is cleans the pkg directory so that only current packages are present and (2) by moving duplicates to /home it frees space on the / partition. The files on the /home dir can be kept for a period of time or simply deleted. The pair of scripts function as one script. The "wrapper" script 'fduparch.sh' simply calls 'fduppkg' setting the search dir and duplicate dir according to the directory array. fduppkg generically just removes duplicates (saving the most recent file) from dir_1 -> dir_2. They provide output advising of the duplicates found as well as logging detailed information about what was done to /home/backup/log/pkgdups.log.bz2. By default, fduppkg is called 3 times: /var/cache/pacman/pkg -> /home/backup/pkg-1 /home/backup/pkg-1 -> /home/backup/pkg-2 /home/backup/pkg-2 -> /home/backup/pkg-del If you simply want to run the script once, just edit fduparch.sh and just remove directories from: DIRLIST=( /var/cache/pacman/pkg /home/backup/pkg-1 /home/backup/pkg-2 /home/backup/pkg-del ) Making it: DIRLIST=( /var/cache/pacman/pkg /home/backup/pkg-1 ) The scripts are reasonably commented, so they are easy to follow. The only requirement is that both be placed in /usr/local/bin (or just modify the script location in fduparch.sh) I just soft link then to /usr/local/bin. Obviously since they are moving files from the pkg directory, they must be run as root or the user must have sudo privileges. Output is verbose by default. The output is shown below. They take less than 60 seconds or so to run. Very handy for cleaning the pkg dir and also for keeping a 'last known' set of good packages around. I agree, no need for a 2nd or 3rd set, but that's just kind of hung around since they were first developed. Give them a try. Guys, I have read https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/26583 but I still have a question. I have the file (/lib/udev/rules.d/52-nut-usbups.rules) for an older version of nut that contains: <snip> BUS!="usb", GOTO="nut-usbups_rules_end" <snip> LABEL="nut-usbups_rules_end" What do I have to do to 'fix' the rule to get rid of the error regarding 'BUS' no longer being recognized? Also, nut (upsd) will start, but after a period of time it dies with the following udevd error in the daemons.log file: Nov 29 13:18:53 archangel udevd[451]: timeout: killing '/sbin/modprobe -bv usb:v045Ep0040d0300dc00dsc00dp00ic03isc01ip02' [696] The error repeats continuously and I cannot kill the nut processes and make it stop. Hi, would it be possible to let pacman, libalpm and libfetch honor the environment variable TMPDIR? I mean, this is stupid. Hi all, I was about to lodge a bug regarding this, but now I'm not sure if it's something my system is doing or... Anyway, tonight I needed to RDP to a work box, and both Remmina and Vinagre both failed to run: % remmina remmina: error while loading shared libraries: libgdbm.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory % vinagre vinagre: error while loading shared libraries: libgdbm.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory So I wrote some scripts, and discovered the following packages are expecting this library (see http://pastebin.com/DyWw74iK for the complete output of my script): apr-util 1.3.12-3 avahi 0.6.30-6 python2 2.7.2-4 python 3.2.2-2 ruby 1.9.3_p0-2 subversion 1.6.17-7 vinagre 3.2.2-1 zsh 4.3.12-3 After seeing this, I tried svn: % svn --help svn: error while loading shared libraries: libgdbm.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Zsh works still, luckily... :) I have an entry in pacman.log that says I upgraded gdbm on: [2011-01-13 19:57] upgraded gdbm (1.8.3-7 -> 1.8.3-8) [2011-11-07 01:00] upgraded gdbm (1.8.3-8 -> 1.8.3-9) The reason I haven't lodged an FS is because I downgraded to gdbm 1.8.3-8 (from Janurary!) and it doesn't have libgdbm.so.4 either, so I'm not sure if there's something weird on my system or what. I'm confused and astonished that I haven't noticed it until tonight. "pacman -Ql gdbm" clearly states no reference to libgdbm.so.4, just libgdbm.so.3 ... Halp... I have installed arch to a laptop CLI only ( just base and base-devlel with wireless) and updated to the latest packages. I have setup the wireless manually. I am in the US and have a wireless access point by tenda (china) and the access point is open no security. My desktop arch install does not have this problem it works without error. When I bring up the wlan0 interface the kernel log shows CRDA calling for country US followed by CRDA calling for county CN and changing the regulatory domain to CN. Later it calls for the US regulatory domain set to US and wlan0 is deauthenticated. iw dev wlan0 connect ESSID causes wlan0 to be authenticated and wireless sevice returns. How does one set this crda thing up so it does not slay the wireless connection? Hello! Since the upgrade to gnome 3.2, keyboard autorepeat is disabled every now and then. To reenable it, I just open System Configuration -> keyboard, and click on any slide bar or disable and enable autorepeat. After this, it works for some minutes. I have googled it, and I have seen that this is and old problem in some distributions and with different applications, but I have none of those applications. Anyone has seen this behavior? I tried every combination of repo and AUR versions of Audacity, FFMPEG, and LibAV libraries, and I was not able to find a way to give Audacity the file named libavformat.so.52 which it wants to much. So far as I have been able to tell, all of the versions of FFMPEG and LibAV either don't compile or produce libavformat.so.53, which the available versions of Audacity won't touch. Anyone have a solution? I would try Ubuntu deb's, but I am concerned with introducing more conflicts instead of eliminating just one! -- Jonathan E. [arch-general] No consoles with NVIDIA

Hi, I've recently installed Arch on my laptop, which basically runs good so far. However I've got a really annoying problem, which I couldn't find a solution so far. My laptop has a dedicated graphics card (GeForce 310M). I would like to have the best performance and battery life. This unfortunately excludes the nouveau driver at the moment. So I've installed the nvidia package according to the wiki. But now I've got the problem that as soon as I start the X server, I've got a blank screen whenever switching back to the consoles (tty1-tty6). This consoles stay blank even when killing the X server, which basically means that I can't use any consoles anymore. I've found a reference to that error in the Gentoo wiki [1], however there seems to be no good solution so far :(. Now I'm asking you whether some of you have experienced the same issue, and maybe know of some work-around? What could possibly mess things so up? Hi. I' m an experienced translator from Turkey. Contributing Arch turkish translations for a while. I have noticed today; some strings in pacman-scripts are very hard to translate. You see, Turkic languages are very differ from Latin origin languages; structure of sentence is almost reversed. So, using multiple "%s" variables in source string makes a lot of trouble. It is hard to translate and translated strings are hard to understand for native Turkish speakers. For example; "Running %s as an unprivileged user will result in non-root\nownership of the packaged files. Try using the %s environment by\nplacing %s in the %s array in %s." will translated into turkish properly, if second, third, fourth and fifth %s variables are supposed to %d, %n, %f, %z : "%s uygulamasını yetkisiz kullanıcı olarak çalıştırmak paketlenmiş dosyaların kök olmayan sahiplik almasına yol açacaktır. %z dosyası içindeki %f satırına %n değerini yerleştirerek %d ortamını kullanmayı deneyin." You see, how variables reversed? So if you, developers, mind to and if it is possible use only one %s in a string it will be much appreciated. Also, if you, developers, mind to add comments what is %s (a command, an application, what??) it will be great help to translators. Greetings...

Hi, Whenever I install a new text editor, it will "hijack" the files without notifying me. My .tex files were associated with Kile and when I recently installed emacs, it hijacked the file associations. This happens quiet often. Going by the Archway, I guess this is unwarranted. The system is doing something automatically without asking me first and I wish it didn't happen. I understand that when I installed Kile, it also automatically took up .tex for its use. But then I guess, .tex was not allocated to anything (excpet may be the default text editor for that env). What I wish is, by default all applications should be allocated to a text editor for that DE. (For example, Kwrite for KDE, Gedit for Gnome and so on.) But as the programs get installed, the programs should check whether there is a file association. If it is just to the text editor, then they can take over. However, if it is to some other program, then they should not do anything instead leave a message during installation that these file types were not changed because they are otherwise associated and then the user can change some if he wants. I know I can edit my custom preferences in ~/.local/share/mime folder or /usr/share/application/defaults.list. Hello all! I'm encountering some very strange problems with my ArchLinux lately... And I was wondering if someone has similar problems? Context: switched to 3.1.1 kernel, all packages are updated. I have a Lenovo X1 Thinkpad -- mainly everything is Intel based. Strange behaviour: * Firefox crashes randomly (or takes the CPU to 100%); (no error on stderr;) * All OpenSSL based programs complain from time to time of invalid received data; * Flash makes strange noises, strange display artefacts, usually just crashes; * mouse jumps in the upper left corner (or sometimes just stays at top or left); * nothing strange in dmesg; Observations: * it doesn't happen with a custom built kernel 2.6.38.x; * it does happen with either custom 3.1.1 kernel or ArchLinux built one; * it seems that when I'm at the office (with a LAN connection) it doesn't happen as often; * it seems that at home (with a Wifi WLAN) it does happen a lot; Thanks, Ciprian. Hi all, I've tagged mkinitcpio 0.8.0, which came a little earlier than I would have liked, but there's still fun things to talk about. The major point of interest is the addition of fsck functionality. The logic in init is triggered by the addition of the 'fsck' install hook. If added after the autodetect hook, only the necessarily helper for the root FS will be added. Eventually, there may be reason to add fsck prior to this hook, but probably not yet. Operation is hands off until something blows up, at which point we follow similar logic to that of rc.sysinit. I'll explicitly call out that if you're using this hook, make sure you have a useful keyboard -- this probably means adding the usbinput hook. Other than fsck, there's were lot of cleanup efforts in the early userspace init to modularize the functionality, but it generally remains the same. Everything remains largely the same functionally, but I'll point out that if you pass a major/minor pair as your root device or don't use udev, you will likely no longer see root mounted as /dev/root, but as a more descriptive block device. As always, this has stood up to my army of VMs, but nothing's better for finding bugs than real world testing. Thanks for Gerardo and Tom for their contributions to this release. Hi, I have a bit of a trouble with proper policy-kit settings. I’m running a standalone openbox session for desktop usage. For login I have a simple script in my .zprofile file, which will start the X server if I log in from the first virtual terminal (which is what I’m doing 99% of the time). if [[ `tty` == "/dev/tty1" ]]; then startx &! logout fi my xinitrc is the following: exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch openbox-session The problem is that in the X session the consolekit session’s is-local and active properties are FALSE hence the removable device automount breaks (I guess it could affect other things I dont use) If I start the X server with startx manually from the tty2 after logging in, both values will be TRUE and device automounting works fine. Should I switch to a proper login manager or is there a quick/easy fix for this? -- J.

I have found a possible solution (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Digital_Cameras#Permission_issues) but I have not tested it since I see no reason why the libgphoto2 package should not work with this camera vendor and model by default. Hi, I've looked around for the last couple of weeks for a package providing uname26 [1]. However I couldn't find such and in the mean time compiled it for myself. I've also searched for the appearance of uname26 in the forums and the mailing lists and couldn't find that much about it. So I'm wondering whether nobody of you was (and/or is) affected by the kernel version scheme change, so that there is no need for you to have this package? As it is quite simple to get and compile this code, it wouldn't be that much of a hassle to package it. However I'm not that much into packaging, so I wouldn't like to do it, unless I have to. I'm not asking anyone of you to do the packaging, and considering myself to get into it (the whole Arch Build System), but I'm wondering why nobody of you seems to have a need for it ;)? Since the 3.1 update, when I suspend with pm-suspend, upon resuming my netbook goes right back to sleep. This behavior is not present in 3.0.7-1 but exists in 3.1-4 and 3.1.1-1. However, this only happens when my netbook is suspended via a lid close event. Running pm-suspend from the command line works as expected. I'm not using a DE. Suspend is triggered by adding /usr/sbin/pm-suspend to the "button/lid" action in /etc/acpi/handler.sh. Caveats first: I know the package I'm referring to is from the aur -- the linux-pf kernel. I'm asking here rather than file a needless bug report for someone to have to squash. I also realize not everyone's whims can be considered or satisfied and don't expect such. However since the pkgbuild is crafted from the mainline pkgbuild this trivial change would, imho, make the pkgbuild more flexible. Guys, Here is one for the brain-trust to consider. Something totally screwed up the time on my computer during an apcupsd commanded shutdown and the subsequent reboot resulting in a 479 Minute time disparity. I don't think this was handled on the first reboot after the power outage because after reboot, I worked for 20-30 minutes before the OS imploded rebooted automatically. I suspect the time discrepancy somehow carried through the boot and went along until some kernel mechanism totally went bonkers and shut the system down. In 12 years of Linux use, this is the first time I've seen something like this happen. Hi, I have been looking but I haven't found a solution to check if a given file in my system belongs to any of my Installed packages. For example, in all my 3 archllinux machine I have a directory named: /usr/lib/libreoffice/basis3.3 85Mb I would not expect to have this directory as I'm fully updated and my current libreoffice is 3.4. Accordingly there also exists the directory: /usr/lib/libreoffice/basis3.4 335Mb I'm not an expert in the libreoffice package and therefore blindly removing the first, without knowing if it is really needed or it is just some directory during the updates, makes me feel unconformable. The command in question should be able not only to check repository packages but also locally installed ones although if it is not possible with the first will be enough. Hi, i was wondering if anyone using xdm gets /etc/X11/xdm/Xstartup loaded when you log in? man page sais "After the user logs in, xdm runs the Xstartup script as root.", so between Xsetup and Xsession. but my /var/log/xdm.log only has: ... xdm info (pid 803): sourcing /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 xdm info (pid 803): sourcing /etc/X11/xdm/GiveConsole xdm info (pid 820): executing session /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession ... i also added `echo "wtf" > /tmp/wtf` to /etc/X11/xdm/Xstartup, just to be sure (before the exec sessreg...) and /tmp/wtf doesnt get created. cheers .andre

Hello everyone, As it is now, the standalone vim cannot copy to and from the X clipboard. For a vim that does this, one needs to install gvim, which pulls a number of dependencies that you don't really need if you don't use the GUI. I guess the rationale for this is that people using vim in console have no use for X support, and the rest will be happy to use gvim. But I think many people -- at any rate, I'm one of them -- use vim in a terminal emulator in X. We don't want gvim, but we find copying and pasting to and from the clipboard useful. Any chance that the policy on compile flags to use for vim could be revised? Thanks Manolo --

I tried to compile coreutils-8.14-1 from abs, with standard Arch CFLAGS. It fails the "make check" in one test, test-parse-datetime. I found a recent reference<http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/coreutils/2011-10/msg00099.html>to a patch needed to avoid false failures in this test caused by incorrect handling of DST. (I'm not on DST right now). Shouldn't the coreutils in abs be passing this test during the build? Is it safe to ignore the failure? [BTW, coreutils fails to compile with "-march=native" on an i5-2405s (native translates to corei7-avx plus a bunch of flags for sse4 etc.) but succeeds (except for that one test) by adding "-mno-avx" to CFLAGS. "Fails to compile" is an understatement. While compiling coreutils I briefly saw what looked like an old ROM debugger screen and then my display came back but all of my file systems were read-only. I think folks might want to add the "-mno-avx" flag to "-march=native" on most Sandy Bridge builds unless you know that the package can take advantage of the avx instruction set. Firefox has been known to fail at run time when compiled for "native" on Sandy Bridge.] -- sitquietly

Hi all, I use kde4.7. As the time zone does not set correctly, I tried to change the timezone as "America/Toronto" in rc.conf. it did work but the time still not right. So I used date&time --KDE control module to adjust time, it said 'System policies prevent you from saving the date/time setting', and asked me input the password for root. The authentication failed, I am quite sure the password was correct. I guess I didn't add time in user group. Any solution about this? Thanks a lot. Adrian

I'm playing around with schroot and when creating a chroot with "type=directory" I at first failed to start it. The reason seems to be the lack of the file "/etc/networks". I created an empty one, and that was accepted by schroot. However, the man page (networks(5)) is rather cryptic, so what is this file for? So I'm hoping some people here might have an idea of how to resolve the problem. Problem: gnome shell freezes from time to time (actually daily). Freezing: "Freezing" means, the screen becomes unresponsive but everything seems to continue working (sound and videos continue playing; even the mouse pointer can still be moved). Most of the time I'm able to switch to a virtual console although sometimes it takes 10-20 seconds after CTRL+ALT+F1 to show up. Then, however, everything is running smoothly. It's not possible to restart X since it will freeze again at the gdm login screen, or even without using gdm when loading the desktop. What triggers the problem: Usually it happens while scrolling on websites or pdfs. I feel like it happens more often if there are large images. Hardware: IBM T60 ATI X1400 I think it's an issue with the open source radeon drivers. However, this problem doesn't occur using other desktop environments. Hi, I'm using the latest kernel from [core] (linux 3.1-4), and experienced a terrible delay of software MIDI synthesizers. I'm using fluidsynth, using ALSA as the output driver (I simply can't get jack working), and VMPK as a keyboard MIDI event generator. The delay used to be fine, but with the latest kernel, it's longer than 0.5 secs --- that's unusable. Since updating to Linux 3.1 yesterday, I've been having strange problems with the display on my laptop. The first reboot after updating the kernel went normally, but every subsequent boot since then has had problems. This is a Dell Latitude D620 laptop with the following graphics-related lines in the lspci output: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) During boot, at the stage where it says "Waiting for UDev uevents to be processed", the backlight normally blinks and the display mode changes, presumably due to udev detecting my graphics hardware. Since the kernel update, the backlight still blinks off momentarily, but when it comes back on, the screen remains blank. Rather than seeing the rest of the boot messages, the display is just black (but backlit). The system still seems to boot like normal; I boot to the virtual console rather than starting X automatically, and once the hard disk activity stops after booting, I can blindly type my login credentials and issue shell commands, though I still can't see any output. Additionally, after the first reboot following the update (which did not have the aforementioned display problems), I had issues with the display backlight after starting X. If I shut the laptop lid, the backlight usually shuts off, and comes back on when I reopen it. However, after the kernel update, around 80% of the time, the backlight seemed to come back on at about a third of its usual brightness. I had to close and reopen it several times, and eventually it would come on at full power like normal. I managed to boot the system in single-user mode using the fallback initcpio image (any other combination of boot options seemed to result in the blank screen), and then downgraded the kernel back to 3.0.7. After downgrading, all of these problems seem to have disappeared. I've scanned through dmesg output and I don't really see anything out of the ordinary. But I admit that I don't really know what I'm looking for. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Hey everyone, I've been reading up on Systemd lately, trying it out in a VM just to see how the setup and everything and I've run into 1 problem, along with a few questions about it. The main question I have about it related to its "On Demand Loading" of daemons. What exactly does this mean in a desktop or server environment? Such as, if my desktop is just sitting there, no configuration done beyond just installing openssh, and I'm at my laptop and I tell it ssh root@desktop. Will systemd automatically spot the incoming ssh connection, since its watching the ssh socket, and start sshd, and then stop it again when I close the connection? Or would I still need to issue "systemctl enable sshd.service" so that sshd is permanently enabled after a reboot? Related to the above; whats the difference between 'enabled' and 'started' / 'active.' following a reboot? The reason I ask is because after I got systemd setup in the VM, and enabled network.service, i rebooted. When I got back into the VM, i tried to ping google, and it wouldn't go through. I checked the status of network.service, it said it was enabled, but "started (inactive)," So i'm confused. If its enabled, and started...why was it inactive? If we assume for a second that systemd temporarily killed the network because nothing was being done with it, then why didnt systemd restart it when it caught activity on the network from me issuing the ping command? The problem I'm having is after sym-linking /etc/systemd/system/default.target to /lib/systemd/system/graphical.target, when I reboot I get dropped into a rescue shell saying: "Failed to issue method call: Unit graphical.target is masked." Anyone able to translate that?

I changed the cflags in makepkg.conf and have been rebuilding packages and have a problem building coreutils. As far as I can see, there are no bug reports or documentation concerning messages like these. It seems something regarding SD card reader... tpowa, Upgraded 5 i686 boxes and 2 x86_64 boxes to linux 3.1-4 yesterday night. This morning, one i686 server is dead, other i686 box responded to xterm (return input) and then locked (ssh connection was left up after login to confirm reboot). Two other i686 boxes (under no load) still running. The boxes are remote. I'll pull the logs when I get to the site and send. Anybody else seeing this with linux 3.1-4? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

I saw rlocate was moved into community in 2008 and again back to aur. I remember trying it once, but could not compile it. Now it complains "configure: error: *** rlocate needs kernel 2.6 to work". What is the status of this project now, is it usable in archlinux? I find the idea very attractive.

Guys, I'm trying to figure out why the i686 codecs package (rm from extra now in aur) is so massively different from the x86_64 codecs64 package in aur. The i686 package seems fine, but the x86_64 package seems to be nothing but a shadow of a package: 183164 Nov 10 00:08 codecs64-20071007-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz 183k? The codecs i686 package is: 18465084 Nov 9 17:51 codecs-20110131-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz 18.4M ? I read the aur notes about the i686 and x86_64 bit versions use different upstream releases and contain completely different codecs, but I don't understand why or how this can possibly work. I have also read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Codecs which seems a bit 'tounge-in-cheek', but provides no additional information. Anybody know more? Does the x86_64 package even work? I have HARDWARECLOCK="UTC" TIMEZONE="right/Portugal" in /etc/rc.conf, but I'm not sure this is the right thing to do. I use clockspeed to keep the clock synchronized with a ntp server, and other sofware requires a "right/*" timezone. Anyone has any knowledge to share about this issue? For example, "date" gives output that ignores leap seconds. Is this a date issue, unrelated with rc.conf? Anyone else using a right/* timezone? TIA J.Almeida

Hello archers, Last massive KDE upgrade broke my KDE desktop. In particular, after the reboot, the panel was gone. I tried to "Add Panel": Default Panel crashes Plasma Shell; Empty panel works. Then I added one by one the widget I had in my original panel (which was pretty standard). I determined that the "culprit" is task manager: when I try to add this widget, KDE crashes. Any workaround? I can't open, in KControl (the control center), the shortcut and gestures configuration dialog: when i double-click the item, KControl freezes. Sometimes the configuration center for shortcuts opens up itself after a lot of time. What's happening? Bug? Other? Enlight me please. Bl@ster

Hi All, I'm trying to install Jepp ( http://jepp.sourceforge.net/ ), but even after talking with the developer we cannot get it right. So, I'm gonna try asking here just in case somebody could give us some insight. I have a Linux 3.0-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500 CPU @3.30GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux Using openjdk for java: openjdk6 6.b22_1.10.4-1 And Python 2.7: python2 2.7.2-2 Actually, my default Python is python 3.2.2-1, but as Jepp has not been ported to Python 3, before beginning the installation procedure I do an "export PYTHON=/usr/bin/python2", so it uses the path to the Python 2 binary (and libraries, as I can see on the logs). So, there is no problem when running autogen.sh (automake 1.11.1-2 here), and ./configure also runs ok. When doing the "make", it stalls with: ... Problem is if I leave X to do something in the console, and the same tty where I started the X session, and come back to X, fluxbox is already frozen. I opted for not starting the dbus session, or as I work around make sure when leaving X temporally, make sure nothing is done on the same tty where X started... Has anyone experienced the same? Hi, I've been trying to get to grips with the package signing stuff, and have just added my first signed package (choqok) to [community], but am having a problem installing it from the repo, when pacman doesn't already know about my key. I'm probably missing a step somewhere, or maybe I've found a bug, not sure. I followed the instructions on the wiki, with the slight difference that I already had a key, so just used that one. Here's the problem. After successfully building in a chroot and submitting and signing the package, all using devtools, I get this: % sudo pacman -S choqok ... error: choqok: key "22AD5874F39D989F" is unknown error: failed to commit transaction (invalid or corrupted package (PGP signature)) Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded. I tried the obvious cache clearing and -Syy'ing, just to be sure, but that didn't fix it. For other people's packages, after the "key XXX unknown" message, I get the option to get it from the keyserver and add it to pacman's keyring. But I don't get that option for my own key. Hi, It seems that updating /etc/shells causes new shells to go after the '# End of file' comment. This doesn't seem to cause any problems, but it looks weird when you open that file. For example, if I want to install zsh: /etc/shells (before): # # /etc/shells # /bin/sh /bin/bash /bin/ksh /bin/csh /bin/dash # End of file /etc/shells (after): # # /etc/shells # /bin/sh /bin/bash /bin/ksh /bin/csh /bin/dash # End of file /bin/zsh This is only a minor issue, but it would be nice to have a workaround for it. nyuszika7h

Legacy /usr/bin/ksh support will go away! $ Considering csh and tcsh were also moved to /bin/, it would be a good idea to remove the /usr/bin/ksh binary (it exists in /bin/, too). I've been using pacman-color since a while ago (now pacman-color-testing as I'm using [testing]) and a few days ago I noticed that pacman-color is not used by makepkg. I got curious and started looking for information about a way of doing makepkg to use pacman-color instead of pacman. However the only way found is to modify the makepkg script itself, if I'm not wrong editing the line 2089: PACMAN=${PACMAN:-pacman} So now I have some questions about the right way to do this a) creating a package that conflicts with pacman because of makepkg being inside the pacman package (not very happy with this idea) b) creating a package that provides another makepkg script (lets say makepkg-color) that calls pacman-color instead of pacman c) something that I'm forgetting Any advice on this? Right now I'm only considering a package to keep track of the file and not editing the file because of ( possible ? ) troubles with updates. Alex

Hi, I upgraded to linux-3.1-2 from [testing] a few days ago (x86_64), and I had problems with ALSA. Sound was broken - KMixer treated Headphone as master, and alsamixer has changed, too. I tried everything but I couldn't get sound to work. Did anyone else have this or a similiar issue? I can't test it unfortunately, as I would have to reboot even to load a new kernel module after upgrading because of changed paths. I could test it in a VM, but the result might not be the same because of different, virtual hardware. nyuszika7h

I've been using Arch Linux for about 4 years now. I have it on a few important systems at work and it has been doing very well. This morning I saw "/usr is not mounted. This is not supported." in my boot up after a recent rc.sysinit update. What is this, bait and switch? I've been running Linux and BSD systems since 1996 and typically always have /usr in a separate partition (as well as /var, /home/ and /tmp, but lately been using a ram /tmp). Why does /usr even exist if it can't be on a separate partition? Why not just combine /usr/lib and /lib? And /usr/bin and /bin? And /usr/sbin and /sbin? Why have the distinction at all if it can't be on separate partition? I understand that historically that /usr often use to be on different drive, and that is not really an issue nowadays. Only this year have I started not putting /usr into separate partitions because I've been making thumbdrive installs, and did not really see any benefit to making so many partitions (automatically created anyways, with a custom install script). Does this "/usr is not mounted. This is not supported." mean I'm going to have to eventually fix (dump/fix/restore) all my systems that are now currently running fine (and that I and others are depending on at my work) because Arch Linux no longer supports /usr on a different partition (due to rc.sysinit failing, not just printing an error message)? I run Arch Linux on more than 10 systems, and about 6 or 7 of those are at work (where Arch has been working out very well). I'm not looking forward to redoing all these systems that are running fine if this is where Arch is headed and rc.sysinit is not fixed to take out this new requirement. I know this a bit of a rant, but this "/usr is not mounted. This is not supported." error message is definitely not getting this day off to a good start... I have a very nasty problem, which started around the time, arch changed its locale configuration. i cannot use ssh in a zsh session. All it does is filling my RAM until the computer stalls. If i run the very same ssh command in a bash session, all is working fine. I tried with blank config files too - here it gets even more odd. With a blank config file it has the same problem in gnome-terminal, but suddenly works in urxvt. This is very annoying, since i dont like bash too much, but i am forced to use it now. Also i have absolute NO plan where to start searching for this issue. Regards, Rasi

Initially I had no problems, but in the following days there had been two subsequent upgrades of texlive-bin, the last of wich yesterday (or today, last time I upgraded was two days ago), that caused errors. I googled but I didn't find anything, and searching on the forum returned no hits. So, I wonder if anyone had the same problem and if there is a solution (apart from reinstalling texlive-most and texlive-lang...). Thank you! With the last push of GCC in testing, I have some kind of trouble to get pacman to update it. It seems that clang, which I'm using fro vim-clang-complete from AUR requires a fixed version of GCC ( and LLVM, but this now is not the my main concern) which makes me impossible to update GCC: error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies) :: clang: requires gcc=4.6.1 So, my question now is if it is safe to rebuild clang without the fixed version dependencie on GCC and then upgrade. Would clang break if the GCC version is different from 4.6.1?

Is there some convenient way of monitoring changes to the Arch repos? The reason for asking is the work we do in ArchHaskell. Due to how ghc (the Haskell compiler) works it's necessary to re-compile and re-link a package when one of its dependencies changes. In this case "changes" includes a bump of pkgrel as well. Currently we're not trying to track any changes to the dependencies living in [extra] and [community], which means that at times packages in ArchHaskell breaks until a user notices it. [arch-general] Programs Not Closing

Hello, Ever since the upgrade to KDE 4.7 several weeks ago, a lot of programs seem to hang in the Task Manager after I close them. They will remain for a long time or until I open another application. I also have an occasional application crash when I shutdown. Unfortunately, the crash message tells me nothing of what program is crashing and I'm not sure if it's related. My question for everyone is regarding the programs hanging around since it's a regular thing and is most likely the cause of the latter. Is this a common thing or do I have some conflict somewhere, or a service that isn't happy? I run pacman -Suy almost daily and use Firefox, Thunderbird, Kopete, Yakuake, VirtualBox, Terminal, Kwrite, and BOINC on a regular bases. I put my system to sleep nightly and shutdown at the end of the week. DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus network !netfs crond alsa @cupsd @boinc @samba). I hope that's enough info. So a convention continuously in use longer than I've been alive is dropped, and the notification for this is tucked in the init script that you get to see on your next (broken) reboot? I had just partioned and set up an Arch system with seperate /usr, /var, /tmp, and /home partitions, as always, last week. A little heads-up might've been nice. At the very least, a message in the .install script to get notified on upgrade would be helpful. And yes, things are more broken than before: minilogd was moved from /sbin to /usr/sbin. Any other changes that drop boot support coming down I should know about? -Leif

Hello everyone, Powertop reports "no ACPI power usage estimate available" with x86_64 kernels 3.0.6-1 and 3.0.6-2. Downgrading to kernel 3.0.4-1 restored power estimates. Older kernels had always worked in the past. Processor is Intel i3, quad core, in a ThinkPad Edge 14 running Gnome 3.2 fully upgraded daily. -- Neal

[arch-general] Pacman makepkg and signatures

Since I don't listen in on irc conversations and haven't picked up on this being discussed on the mailing list, I thought I would go ahead and ask a seemingly dumb question. When building a pacakge from core, extra, or community with makepkg should I locate the signature key for the source tarball and import it into the pacman-key database, or will there be a mechanism for this in the future, or since the same package is used by the devs is it completely unnecessry for me to worry about? Obviously the build completes after issuing the warning about a problem with signature verification and being sure you trust the package so it's not a problem, I'm just trying to stay ahead of the curve. It may break critical/[core] packages, as such users are strongly encouraged to subscribe to [arch-dev-public] and watch the [testing] sub-forum. Second reference - this forum thread - https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=128682 A user basically is using [testing] without fulfilling the above requirements. Should the user be advised not to use [testing] or is this counter-productive to the purpose of [testing]? This discussion is not meant to be commentary on any of the personalities involved in the thread, the thread did spark this but I'd like to hear (esp from devs/TUs) opinions on the general case, not the specific case. The reason for this is that its possible there's quite a bit of difference in opinions, and some clarity would (IMO) help. My personal opinion - If you don't fulfil the above requirement you should not use [testing], and other Arch users should graciously inform you as such. Sorry for the long email, feel free to mute this thread, since I do know its got high potential for unproductive cross-chatter.

Hi Alex, I think in a default configuration crond handles hourly and runs anacron to handle the daily, weekly, etc. I was having trouble running a daily until I realized my cron.daily shell script environment path did not include /usr/local/bin. Hi all on this list, First, I really apologize if this is off list, but I had trouble registering on the forum's. But OK, now to my problem. I used Gnome in the passed, v2.30 with no issues and I had to do a reinstall of my system and now I am running the latest Arch. However, Gnome seems to be working fine, I think, but I am having problems when I try to use Orca, the screen reader for Gnome. I am visually impaired so I rely on speech and or braille. Here is a short summery of what I did after the installation of Arch was complete I added my user and added it to some of the groups, like audio,video,storage,optical, etc. Then, I did: pacman -S xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-utils xorg-server-utils pacman -S xf86-video-ati pacman -S gnome gnome-extra pacman -S xf86-input-keyboard xf86-input-mouse rc.d start dbus pacman -R gnome-shell gnome-screensaver /etc/rc.d/gdm start Isn't this correct for getting Gnome up and running? After the latest initscripts update I get a warning (?) from udevd (?) when shutting down, it goes like this: ... Deactivating Swap [Done] Sending SIGTERM to processes [Busy] udevd[pid]: 'udisks-part-id /dev/sda2' [pid] terminated by signal 15 (terminated) [Done] Saving random seed [Done] ... In my case sda2 is the swap partition, nothing seems to break as swap still gets enabled when the machine boots but I was wondering if this is expected and if this might cause trouble for some corner case. -- Mauro Santos

I did a system upgrade. So /etc/locale.conf is optional, right? I just create it if necessary, but it is not created by default, isn't it? Hi, I just updated syslog-ng 3.2 -> 3.3 and noticed that my iptables logs go into every possible logfile, i.e. /var/log/{messages,kernel,iptables}.log. This is despite the fact that syslog-ng.conf contains lines like: filter f_kernel { facility(kern) and not filter(f_iptables); }; I tried modifying the rules in filter f_iptables() and moving this filter before f_kernel and f_messages (by default it is after), but still get firewall logs everywhere :( Does anyone have this problem? Dear list, I have come from the debian world. I am a debian user and stick to the light-weight applications since beginning. I have found arch wiki/tutorial etc... are extremely knowledge based.. hence I have joined the list to gain my knowledge and experience and also to get help on some critical issues. I am using quingy as a framebuffer login manager. It runs well. But when I logout from the console; the qingy comes back with a complete broken look.. where no input is possible. qingy has some resolution issue which I have fixed by editing /etc/directfbrc with the following `````````````` mode=1024x768-76 depth=32 `````````````` But still suffering with this broken qingy after logout. Has anyone have any clue to fix it ? Thanks

So I'm trying to figure out why Samba won't allow me to share the folder: /home/admin/data on my home server; but it will share: /home/ just fine. /home/admin/data is chmodd'ed 777 because its gonna be the 'public share' folder with nothing personal in it, the user is admin, the group is users. Whenever I try to access the folder from my laptop TO the server; I get "Access Denied" Relevant SMB.conf section: [Public] path = /home/admin/data/ available= yes browsable = yes public = yes writable = yes create mask = 0777 guest ok = yes [admin@server ~]$ ls -l total 12 drwxrwxrwx 2 admin users 4096 Oct 21 13:09 data drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Oct 21 12:58 ftp drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Oct 21 13:49 http [admin@server ~]$ Just incase this is the issue: the permissions on /home/admin (the admin folder specifically) are [admin@server home]$ ls -l total 4 drwx------ 5 admin users 4096 Oct 21 13:53 admin [admin@server home]$ So could the problem be that /home/admin's permissions wont allow me to share a subfolder, even though the subfolder's permissions are fine? If so; what would be an okay permission setup to use for /home/admin so that I CAN share /home/admin/data, without letting everyone have access to my overall /home? The reason im doing Samba instead of NFS is because there's windows machines on the network as well

Hi there, I use netcfg for my university wlan (eduroam). It works fine for a while but after a couple of minutes I get disconnected and need to reconnect manually. I think that happens pretty regularly, so I assume that some kind of connection renewal doesn't work for some reason. Any idea what could be wrong, how to fix it or how to reconnect automatically? and any other keys which need to press the Shift as well as Meta or Ctrl at the same time. not sure if that's a problem with agetty, or perhaps some setting problem somewhere else. does anybody knows the reason why this happen, or how to solve that problem? P.S: it's working well when using xterm.

In the forums https://bbs.archlinux.org it's only possible to run one search within 60 seconds (1 minute). This is very annoying if someone has a problem, a search term doesn't give a search result, and a new search with a different search term has to be done. So, could this interval, please, considerably be reduced? A suitable interval would be 10 or 15 seconds. There's also a bug report since more than 8 months now: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/22739 It would really be nice if this could be fixed soon. I don't need the forums and its search function so many times, but if I need it I need to do more than one search in a short interval. Heiko

[arch-general] Problems with pacman 4.0.0-2

Hi, I'm using pacman from testing and I ran into some troubles. I set "SigLevel = Optional TrustAll" in pacman.conf, but I'm still getting a lot of warnings even after I add the keys to the repo. It also takes an ENORMOUS amount of time to do I don't know what right after checking packages integrity, and then fails with : "invalid package or corrupt signature" _without_ telling me which package had a problem. As a workaround, I'm using "SigLevel =Never", but well, this isn't the solution. It "fixes" both the performance issue & the signing (as expected). I tried using an other mirror, hoping that was only a temporary corruption, but this isn't. I attached a sample pacman output log. As for performance concerns, I'm using an intel quad core cpu, with 8Go ram, and pacman doesn't seem to use any ressource at all. It looks like it's the gpg-agent command launched by pacman that takes all this time to complete (and fail in the end ?). I don't have a clue what it is doing, because that's why I used "Optional TrustAll" in the first place. I got three Arch box which are affected by this problem (on different networks, if it matters for gpg-agent). Any ideas are welcome. This could be unrelated to pacman itself. Tim

Using an XferCommand in pacman.conf causes a bunch of 404 errors while downloading databases complaining about testing/core/extra.db.sig not found, but it doesn't do the same if it's using the default download method without an XferCommand. I've configured pacman to use [testing] this morning with the intention of trying pacman 4.0 (so far without troubles after reading a few topics on the BBS and ML) but I've noticed something "weird" after the second update, the one after pacman. [arch-general] cannot generate enough entropy for pacman-key --init

Hey There, I have an Arch Linux box inside Virtualbox on a Mac that I use for development purposes. I connect to this machine via SSH without any visual interface. It's on [testing] and just upgraded to pacman 4.0 and after installation it asked me to run pacman-key --init to generate the necessary keys for my system. I did all of these inside GNU Screen (also tried without it without any luck): $ sudo pacman-key --init gpg: Generating pacman keychain master key... Not enough random bytes available. Please do some other work to give the OS a chance to collect more entropy! (Need 300 more bytes) I pressed random bits with the keyboard but it didn't work so I fired up another window inside screen and did cat /dev/urandom > /dev/null but that also didn't work. So I found this [1] article and tried it again without any luck. So I'm basically stuck here. Can someone please help me? Since pacman is bricked, I can't also install anything. Hello. I don't have any powers to post on arch-dev-public, so I'm writing here. Since I upgraded to pacman 4.0 (and building tools related to pacman 4.0), some packages which have both an install file and a name like something-git won't build. For example, if I try to build vlc-git, https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=16084, I cannot get it build until I comment install=() line : [fred@fredo-arch vlc-git]$ makepkg ==> ERROR : install file (('vlc-git.install')) doesn't exist But a little ls tells me : [fred@fredo-arch vlc-git]$ ls PKGBUILD vlc-git.install Known bug ? install file line in this package : install=('vlc-git.install') I can see the same for a package I try to maintain, kvm-git : https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=22041 Any ideas ? -- Frederic Bezies fredbezies(a)gmail.com

After upgrading to the new pacman 4.0, the system update following fails due a lot of untrusted signatures (unknown trust error). I'm guessing we need to verify we really trust these signatures. I've found this guide regarding validating gpg keys: http://www.pps.jussieu.fr/~jch/software/pgp-validating.html. I assume this will be a lot similar, except using the pacman-key frontend to do the verification. So let me step through and see if understand correctly: All the developers keys seem to be published here: http://www.archlinux.org/developers/ and http://www.archlinux.org/trustedusers So to trust Andrea Scarpino's key I would get the pgp key from the above webpage (PGP Key: 0xD30DB0AD) and finger it: pacman-key --finger 0xD30DB0AD then compare the finger print with the one thats linked to his profile: http://pgp.mit.edu:11371/pks/lookup?op=vindex&fingerprint=on&exact=on&searc… It seems to match, so there is a good chance it's the real deal, so now I can locally sign it: pacman-key --lsign-key 0xD30DB0AD Correct? In examples of the article also marks the key as trusted. Would that be a good idea? We have to do this for each and every Arch developer I guess? Is there a faster way? Sander

I don't have ms-windows machine, but I asked a guy to try the usb device with the proprietary CD that came with it, and it worked out out of the box (what a surprise for these things thought for ms-windows only), so the device is working nice. Guys, Where do I find a list of ABS download mirrors? I was working with ffmpeg and the download from ftp.archlinux.org was painfully slow due to the throttled connection. Is there somewhere mirrors for ABS sources are listed? Usually it doesn't matter because most sources are relatively small, but with packages like ffmpeg (50 meg), the throttling difference can be extreme. Thanks. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

I do not care for what, IMHO, is the drive to appease the corporate user types who insist everyones' machine look the same and force everyone into a common way of doing things. It may be great for the office, but not for other users. Like Dan I'm coming accross as old and resistant to change. Change is good and necessary unless it's change for changes' sake. I realize the Arch way dictates minimal patching and staying current with upstream, but what happens if upstream goes the wrong direction? I had a steep learning curve because I wanted to use Arch and I still have a long way to go, but at least I remember how to set up, maintain and use a computer again. Hi folks, wanting to go lightweight, I just switched back from kdm to xdm, but I ran into a little snag, which I reported as bug FS#26395 on the bug tracker. I'm no longer sure this is actually a bug, at least not of "who". The problem: After loggin in via xdm, "who" does not show any logged in users. "who /var/run/utmp" on the other hand does show the logged in user. Using kdm, "who" and "who /var/run/utmp" both reported the same result. The reason: There's a small difference between running "who" with or without argument. When run without argument, "who" checks whether the process associated with a session in /var/run/utmp is dead or alive. If it is dead, the entry is not listed in the output. Now, when using xdm, sessreg is run from Xstartup and registers the shell running Xstartup as the PID associated with the session. The shell running Xstartup exits and then xdm fires up Xsetup to start the user's session. Since the shell running Xstartup has exited, there is no longer any process with the PID associated with the session in /var/run/utmp. Hence, who does not report this session. While this explains the source of the problem, I have no idea how to fix it. It seems that what would be needed is to run sessreg as root from a process that stays alive while the user is actually logged into the X session. kdm, for example, does in fact stay alive while the user is logged in. So does xdm, but the PID recorded in /var/run/utmp is not the one of xdm but of the shell it spawns to run Xsetup. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Norbert

Hi everyone, It seems that with the latest version of GLiv using a nVidia GPU when trying to quit the program with File->Quit or just hitting `q' it freezes and then starts eating all the CPU. Anybody have experienced the same issue? As far as I can tell, this problem was not present with previous versions of GLiv and/or nVidia driver. Anyone else's gnome-shell-extension-dock break after the update? I've done some searching and it doesn't look like anyone has run into this issue. Just wondering if anyone would know how to get it back? I've removed it, installed it, enabled it, it just doesn't show, and nothing shows in the .xsession-errors file. Hi, I ran pacman -Syu just now after a gap of almost 3 weeks. After the update I restarted my system and now I can't play audio. Even mpd doesn't start up. alsamixer shows Card: PulseAudio and Chip:PulseAudio. Please help me as I can't do work on my computer with listening to music. :( I have pulseaudio installed just because gdm needs it. Other than that I use alsa.

Please help me to understand how bash does its initialization when started as a non-login shell. The manual says it sources ~/.bashrc and that's it. The Arch Wiki says it sources /etc/bash.bashrc and then ~/.bashrc. Sure enough, it does what the Wiki says... It occurred to me to look in the Wiki, after much trouble, the kind of trouble that happens from trusting the manuals. Did I misunderstood the manual or is Arch distributing a patched version? Install above pacman RC package. 2. sudo pacman-key --init 3. `SigLevel = Optional` in pacman.conf is the default- for more info, see man pacman.conf, but this means signatures will be checked *if available*, and there will be no error if they are not. However, due to us not having a web of trust for Arch developer keys, you will need to add this to the [options] section: SigLevel = Optional TrustAll 4. Run -Syu or any other operation that fetches packages from sync databases. When it comes time to check package integrity, you may be prompted to import keys that are not in your keychain. The recent upgrade from 3.0 to 3.2 has caused the gdm login screen to display a list of user names despite /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list being set to true. Was working in 3.0. This has been reported upstream https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=660660 Should I log this in FS and link to the upstream bug? Richard.

NVIDIA users be aware that xorg-server 1.11 from testing is incompatible with the current nvidia driver, even with IgnoreABI. Hi, I'm not a DE (desktop environment) user, and I'm not planning to become one. I'm pretty comfortable with plain fluxbox... However when people wonders about how to start on a linux kernel based OS, specially to be able to run on old or low end machines, they really expect a DE, not knowing that both major ones (gnome and kde) are really bloated and they better stay out of their way, :-) So LXDE sounds like the DE I'd like to experiment with, but I'd like to use fluxbox instead of openbox. I'm not familiar with LXDE, so perhaps a pointer to a tutorial or howto for this WM switch might be useful. I'd guess is not just calling startfluxbox in some configuration file (like ~/.xinitrc), but some care is required for keyboard management as well since fluxbox offer its own keybinding, :-) Also I'd liek to know what problems are to be faced because of using fluxbox before hand if possible... Since aif now supports syslinux and grub equally, does it make sense that grub no longer needs to be in the base group? syslinux isn't in base. I'll open an FS for this if that's wanted.

I have a very annoying problem with xmodmap: Inside X, in an xterm: $ echo $DISPLAY :1 In console (agetty1): $ echo $DISPLAY $ xmodmap .Xmodmap xmodmap: unable to open display '' $ xmodmap -display :2 .Xmodmap xmodmap: unable to open display ':2' Until now, everything as expected. The problem is: $ xmodmap -display :1 .Xmodmap $ echo $? 0 So, everything seems fine, but switching to the vt where X is I find that xmodmap didn't load anything. Note that if running "xmodmap .Xmodmap" from X it works. In console, I tried also setting the env variable DISPLAY (the only one relevant to xmodmap, according to the manual), to no avail. You might wonder why is this a problem, since it works from X. I have a xmodmap command in the startup file of the window manager (openbox). Other X related commands work, only xmodmap fails. It seems that xmodmap requires being run from an emulator inside an X session, which it's not supposed to. Any help about this essentially undocumented piece of software would be appreciated. Alternatively, anyone knows whether there is some alternative to xmodmap? xkb doesn't seem to be able to replace it, judging by what poor documentation there is out there. TIA Jorge Almeida

[arch-general] Enable FLTK Octave backend?

Hi, I read in the Octave documentation [1] that a newer (than gnuplot) plotting capability is provided by the FLTK/OpenGL backend. This new backend is not available in the current octave arch package, because the fltk library is required to be installed at build time. I read that the FLTK backend is rather faster (for 3d plots) than the gnuplot backend, and also some options (e.g., Postscript level 3 or pdflatex outputs of the print command) are only available with the new backend. I installed fltk from extra and recompiled octave. The new backend seems to work fine and it is also enables to zoom (or rotate) and pan the current plot. I don't know if the addition of the FLTK backend has been discussed in the past and abandoned for some reasons, but I see no issues in including it, since the default backend seems to still be gnuplot. So, adding the support for the FLTK backend would be as simple as putting fltk in makedepends and optdepends. Hello, I was wondering if it is possible to have archlinux set it's hostname based on what the DHCP server tells it is? As I noticed while using a CentOS Server, that it does do this by default. There has been some recent change somewhere in the startup process that makes startup messages disappear once the process is completed and the login prompt appears. I had (and have) in /etc/initttab: c1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -i -8 38400 tty1 linux I added the "-i" to prevent clearing the terminal, and it worked. Not any more. Not even with Shift+PageUp. When i start Windos in Virtual box get the following message error: The virtual box linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or ther is a permission problem with (dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executin rc.d setup vboxdrv as root. This package keepr trackc of linuex kernel changes andrecompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. Hi Archers, I have just pushed clojure 1.3.0 to [community]. A list of changes can be found at [1]. One major recent change is that upstream has split up the monolithic contrib package into separate sub-projects [2]. This means that clojure-contrib is no longer necessary for clojure 1.3.0 and individual contrib projects should be packaged separately into the AUR. Hi, One of the very few reasons that I still Dual boot windows is that I don't know how to convert media files from one format to another in Linux. On windows I use 2 very easy to use softwares namely FormatFactory and ConvertXToDVD for my needs. Can you guys tell me about any Linux alternative to that? I tried installing ConvertXtoDVD using wine. The main program installs fine but the DVD menu templates, though installed, aren't detected by the program and hence I cant use the DVD menus. Thanks.

[arch-general] Daylight Saving Time canceled in Ukraine, will Arch know?

Beginning this year, Ukraine is switching to year-round DST and will permanently reside in UTC+3 timezone (where it is now). Normally, the switch to UTC+2 would have occurred some time in October, but no longer. How would Arch Linux handle it for the users who do not have NTP configured? Would Arch somehow know not to switch the clock this year or should zoneinfo file for Kiev be updated to reflect this change and to avoid users' clocks being skewed?
