[arch-general] new dmraid install - grub installed fine - boot fails to find root filesystem - dropped to [ramfs /]# ?

Guys, There is either a new bug in the dmraid install routine or I've screwed something up. However, after not having problems with the prior 3 dmraid installs I've done, I'm not sure it's me. I made a new Arch install on a box that had an existing dmraid setup running suse 10.3. I installed per the "Installing with Fake Raid" wiki. For this setup, it was a complete fresh install, I completely repartitioned the array for this install not preserving /home or anything else. The logical partitions are: /dev/mapper/nvidia_haheegdb /dev/mapper/nvidia_haheegdbp5 /boot /dev/mapper/nvidia_haheegdbp6 / /dev/mapper/nvidia_haheegdbp7 swap /dev/mapper/nvidia_haheegdbp8 /home All of the data partitions are ext3. (swap is of course swap) As per the wiki, during the grub install, I got an Error 22, so I went back in created sym links between nvidia_haheegdbp5 -> nvidia_haheegdb5, to get around the 'p' problem with grub not finding the partitions. I set the geometry with CHS information from cfdisk and confirmed that grub was happy with a 'find /grub/stage1' before setting the root (hd0,4) and performing the setup on (hd0). Grub setup completes without any errors and reports success. dm_mod and dm_mirror are included in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and /etc/rc.conf. However on boot, the boot fails when it can't find /dev/mapper/nvidia_haheegdbp6. The actual error is: -------------------- Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/mapper/nvidia_haheegdbp6 ... Root device '/dev/mapper/nvidia_haheegdbp6' doesn't exist. Attempting to create it. ERROR: Unable to determine major/minor number of root device '/dev/mapper/nvidia_haheegdbp6' You are being dropped to a recovery shell Type 'exit' to try and continue booting /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off [ ramfs \ ]# -------------------- Now I'm stuck here. I have gone back chrooted the install and reinstalled grub twice just to make sure. No change. It boots to the grub menu and then boots fine until it gets to where it reads the root line from menu.lst and then dies. One thing I found strange, the second time I was setting up the chroot and had made a /mnt/arch to base the chroot in, when I when to mount the root partition with: mount /dev/mapper/nvidia_haheegdbp6 /mnt/arch mount gave the error "You must specify a type..." which I thought was strange because then I turned around and did: mount /dev/dm-2 /mnt/arch and it worked just fine. Since /dev/mapper/nvidia_haheegdbp6 is just a link to ../dm-2 I found that strange. So I need ideas of what to try to get this box working. I can't figure out what went wrong. dm_mod and dm_mirror are loaded and working fine when chrooted. With this as the 4th dmraid install I've done with Arch, I figured it would be simple, but I think this is the first install I've done since dmraid added the 'p' designation. Other than needing to add the links from 'p' to 'no p' everything seemed the same, so I'm not sure where things are mucked up. Let me know if I can provide anything else to help. The former ooo-build project "go-openoffice" is deprecated by upstream developers in favor of the upcoming LibreOffice (LibO). It's time to drop it from our repos while we are rebuilding all OpenOffice branches for the icu-4.6 .so-bump. Please use the vanilla Oracle openoffice-base packages or try out the new and already very stable libreoffice packages. The Oracle office beta and devel packages will get rebuilt when new upstream releases will happen. Don't expect them to work when we move icu-4.6. They are of low interest. -Andy

Guys, I want to keep the current kernel while I upgrade to 2.6.36-2 and where I confused is how to use mkinitcpio to do this. What I think I can do to preserve the current kernel as 2.6.36-dcr is: (1) cp -a /lib/modules/2.6.36-ARCH /lib/modules/2.6.36-dcr (2) mkinitcpio -k 2.6.35-dcr \ -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf \ -g /boot/kernel26-dcr.img mkinitcpio -k 2.6.35-dcr \ -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf \ -g /boot/kernel26-dcr-fallback.img \ -S autodetect (3) update grub menu.lst and create entries for the dcr kernel Before I wasted too much time chasing my tail, I thought would put this out to the list and see if (or what) I'm missing. -- David C. Shm is used by pulseaudio I think and also i copy my chromium profile from hd to shm an boot and then remove cache and copy the profile back to hd when i shutdown. Also it is used by one script that simply touches a lock file in there. Reproducing is as simple as just rebooting the pc and the permissions are broken and shm is mounted whit beautiful size of mere 10 mb and it used to mount whit a size of 1.4G :D (it broke my chromium profile :( as it didn't fit in there ) Il try to add those options and the size option too to the fstab and see if that helps, hopely this won't eat my chromium profile again :D -- (\_ /) copy the bunny to your profile (0.o ) to help him achieve world domination. Probably many of you know about the acquisition of 882 of Novell's patents by a Microsoft organized consortium [1]. What you may not know is that, as Novell was part of OIN (Open Invention Network), those that join OIN *before* the closing date for the acquisition (about january 23) will be protected from any harassment regarding these patents. This [2] Groklaw's article explains it in more detail. It works because the patents are granted perpetually to OIN members that have jointed before the closing date, even in the case of a sell (like occurred in this case). You don't need to have patents or be a company to join (for free) OIN. Any project (like Arch Linux), or even an individual can do it. I understand that *if* MS will use them, it'll be with the big guys (or at least some company). Probably they will prefer to use the patents just for FUD. But OTOH we have nothing to loose (not even patents :-), and it's free. makepkg and devtools are already capable of building split packages with different architectures. A particular case of interest is foo-data split packages which usually are much bigger than their arch-dependent counterparts. Currently, a separate PKGBUILD is required to convert these data packages to be arch-independent, which complicates maintenance needlessly. I had a look at the db-update and db-function scripts, but the code is hard to follow for someone new to it. Therefore, I'd like to ask for opinions from people who've worked on them and have a general knowledge of how they work and how this could be implemented. My idea is to make a special case for arch-dependent PKGBUILDs, to allow for arch=('any') split packages, without necessarily parsing the package_foo-data function. What do you think?

[arch-general] Bizarre grub drive number switch from (hd1, 5) to (hd2, 5) but no hd2 defined???

Guys, I have managed to get myself in a number of messes over the years, but usually when I figure out what went wrong, I understand why. Here, I'm at a complete loss. I was going to preserve my existing kernel through update and I described in an earlier email. (I'm still on kernel26-2.6.36.1) So I created a custom initramfs and preserved the module tree and added the entries to grub menu.lst. This box has always booted arch on (hd1,5) a device mapper array. (hd0) is another device mapper array with an old suse install on it. However, after I made may changes and went to reboot to test the custom initramfs, I got a grub 13 error for an invalid executable?? So I booted with the Arch 2010.05 install disk and chrooted my existing install and looked at grub. When I did my grub > find /boot/grub/stage1, grub reported stage1 on (hd0,4) (hd2,4) WTF? I don't have an hd2 and what the heck happened to hd1?? [01:42 archangel:/boot/grub] # cat device.map (hd0) /dev/mapper/nvidia_fdaacfde (hd1) /dev/mapper/nvidia_baaccaja (fd0) /dev/fd0 So I decided to give booting to hd2 a try. So I reconfigured the suse menu.lst file to call (hd2,5) to boot Arch, and I redid the Arch menu.lst to point everything at (hd2,5) instead of (hd1,5) and rebooted. To my shock and surprise - it booted just fine with all the drive number flipped from 1->2. This makes no sense whatsoever to me. How does my device.map still correctly define my (hd0) and (hd1) arrays, but grub spontaneously require booting to /dev/mapper/nvidia_baaccaja on (hd2). Damndist thing I've ever seen. It goes without saying, but I am at a complete loss as to 'what happened' and 'why it happened'. I can't even think of any way it 'could have happened'. All I did was run mkinitcpio twice to create the custom initramfs that I would use to preserve the existing kernel when I updated by running: mkinitcpio -k 2.6.36-dcr \ -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf \ -g /boot/kernel26-dcr.img mkinitcpio -k 2.6.36-dcr \ -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf \ -g /boot/kernel26-dcr-fallback.img \ -S autodetect And when I rebooted, I ended up in this mess. So what say the experts. Does anybody see a way running mkinitcpio as I did above could cause the grub root to change from hd1 to hd2? I don't see how it could happen. [arch-general] Fluxbox broken when launched via qingy

Not sure what happened, but fluxbox seems to be broken when launched via qingy. This used to work fine, and I haven't changed anything in my fb or qingy setups that could account for this. I'm able to launch other WM's via qingy, and am also able to launch FB via other desktop managers (e.g., slim) so it's something unique to this combination that's causing the problem. [arch-general] VirtualBox_bin 3.12 - slow system freeze on i686, OK on x86_64

Guys, just a heads up for those that use virtualbox_bin from AUR: I experienced a system freeze problem on a dell P4 box with VirtualBox-3.2.12 causing the machine to slowly freeze, become unresponsive, then hardlock. WinXP (guest) starts fine, but then it will freeze, followed by the kde taskbar, and then a minute or two later, the mouse and keyboard freeze and the box is locked. (hard reset required) I went through this lockup process twice to make sure. Downgrading to VirtualBox-3.2.10 solved the problem for me. Prior to updating the i686 box, I did another VirtualBox-3.2.12 upgrade on a x86_64 box (XP guest as well), and all is working well. So it looks like it may be some issue or memory leak that is killing the i686 package. I (and others) have dropped notes with the AUR package. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Hi folks, With the python upgrade from 2.7 to 3.1, I ran into the following snag. gitosis from AUR depends on python and setuptools. Now, python = python3.1 now and setuptools installs in the python2.7 library tree. This was easy enough to fix, by simply replacing python with python2 in the gitosis PKGBUILD. However, I would expect that python2 will disappear completely somewhere down the road. What then? Moreover, being a purist, I would like to avoid having two python versions installed on my machine. So what's the deal with python3.1 and setuptools? Is the procedure for installing python packages different under 3.1 than under the old 2.x series, and there simply are no setuptools any more? If that's the case, I guess it's the responsibility of package maintainers to migrate to the setup used in python3.1. If setuptools is still what is needed in python3.1, shouldn't there now be two packages setuptools and setuptools2 that install in the library trees of python3.1 and python2.7, respectively? If it's done like you're suggesting than you would force a user to only format his harddisk with e.g. ext4, because you think that ext4 is the one and only and most popular filesystem and every other filesystem has to be moved to [extra], because they are not necessary or not as popular as ext4. It's all about choice - the user's, not the dev's choice. Instead every filesystem - probably except for dosfsutils - has to be moved to [core] and be supported by AIF, because a filesystem is the most basic and necessary part of a system which has to be chosen, used and installed during installation. You simply can't reformat or repartition a harddisk after the installation. Well, it's possible but not without having a second harddisk onto which the installed system had first to be copied. But that's not the way a system should be installed. So every filesystem - regardless of how much it is used and how popular it is - has definitely to be moved to [core] and supported by AIF. And, no, ext2 is not the only filesystem which can be used for /boot and /. So there are several people who like to use and to test it. As soon as there's a first stable version of a package it should of course not be updated anymore to newer, unstable versions. Of course, those experimental packages should explicitly be marked as experimental in AIF. There have been, btw., several kernel modules in the vanilla kernel which have been marked as experimental for many years even if they haven been really stable in the meantime. Just because it's not in [core] and not supported by AIF, just because a filesystem is usually chose at install time. And nilfs won't get as a high usage as ext4, just because it's primarily meant for using on a SSD (SSD disks, USB sticks, etc.). But to be able to install Arch Linux on a USB stick with the official install CD and to format the USB stick with nilfs it needs to be supported by AIF and to be in [core]. Heiko

Currently, if one wants to make a pkg, lets say, for an app that only has binaries available and only for 32bit archs, then one usually makes a bin32-appname pkg for it. I don't like this and would like to have the bin32 and the non-bin32 pkgs to be just one pkg with the name of the app. But if one makes this kind of a pkg, one must use ugly if [[ "$CARCH" = .... statements are in the PKGBUILD, so I was thinking that could it be possible to implement some new variables in PKGBUILDS like depends32 and optdepends32 and then build32() {} and package32() {}? I dont know how makepkg is written, so I dont know how hard it is to implement these, but in the best case it shouldn't be more than just one or two if-statements in the code, so if arch is x86_64 use the 32 variables if they are present. -- (\_ /) copy the bunny to your profile (0.o ) to help him achieve world domination. Good evening everyone, I'm using arch since a while now. Everything was working just fine, until a few weeks (months?) ago. Since, I had a few problems I can't understand : The first symptom was the day I lost sound on my regular audio output (moterhboard intel HDA). I finally noticed sound was actually send to my TV through my G92 9800GT. I had a long period during while I was always switching my speakers wire from my tower to the screen, and back to the computer. The main problem beeing that, after putting the screen in sleep mode, I wasn't able to get the sound back without restarting X. Since, the problem changed, somewhat. Now, vlc sends its sound in both my motherboard and my graphic card outputs. While banshee's still only using the motherboard one. The most recent symptom is that, when I'm already playing some music with banshee, I can't have sound on any web browser (opera, firefox & chromium tested so far). I first though it was flash-related. But since I can't have sound while playing quakelive too (and AFAIK, QLive doesn't uses flash), I'm a bit confused... What could be happening? The only way I can get sound working back in the web browser is to shut down banshee and restart the browser. And I won't be able to make banshee work again before closing the browser, and then starting banshee. [arch-general] script idea - update single arch box -> updates all on local net

Guys, I've played with an idea to save time with updates and duplicate (old version) removal from /var/cache/pacman/pkg for all arch boxes on a local network. I thought I would pass along the idea and the scripts as they exist now. Requirements: - public key/private key ssh access for user between boxes on the lan (id_dsa) - sudo rights for user on each box Config: - all script calls to additional scripts are to symlinks in /usr/local/bin Operation: pmduprsync.sh - is the outside script that runs pacman -Syu --noconfirm on a box on the lan (you can nix the --noconfirm if you want to review). -- it then calls fduparch.sh (which just sets the directories to remove old version of the packages from/to (I've posted a full description before). Which then calls: -- fduppkg (the actual script that scans /var/cache/pacman/pkg and moves old versions of packages to another directory of your chosing. (currently /home/backup/pkg-old for me) -- fduparch.sh runs a second time for me to remove old versions from /home/backup/pkg-old to /home/backup/pkg-older (original I know) pmduprsync.sh grabs a md5sum of the /var/cache/pacman/pkg dir on the remote hosts of the same arch and then rsyncs /var/cache/pacman/pkg dir to remote host and grabs another md5sum. If the sums differ, then pacman -Syu --noconfirm is called on the remote host following by fduparch.sh to tidy up the /var/cache/pacman/pkg dir there. For me the benefit is I keep a current package set for all boxes in the package dir of each host (not an issue in the days of 1T drives). Further, bandwidth reduction. Packages are only downloaded once and rsynced between boxes. Now granted the --noconfirm isn't optimal, and I always check first before pulling the trigger, but the automation of checking what an update will include on one host (generally the host with the widest package selection) and then having the updates daisy-chain to all other arch boxes on the lan while tidying up /var/cache/pacman/pkg on each box is a big plus. Currently you will see that I've just hard coded which hosts are i686 and x86_64 in pmduprsync.sh (easy at home - only 4 boxes 2 of each arch), but there is no reason why either an i686/x86_64 host list file couldn't be automagically built with some type of subnet host query followed up with ssh 'uname -r' calls. Anyway here are the scripts in case it sparks an idea with someone else. I believe this was the right choice. Pulseaudio should be in extra and all applications build with pulse support. Regarding phonon, i believe KDE intends to drop it at some point, not sure were i read that. I remember reading something about KDE 5 not including phonon, but it may be FUD. Anyone more informed on the issue? In any case, Linux/GNU needs pulseaudio. Pulseaudio should be the api to target for all apps. The kind of functionality it provides it is needed if modern distros are to compete with Windows 7. Windows 7 now provide the functionality to switch sound cards on the fly without restaring the app playing sound. This is possible only with Pulseaudio as far as i can tell in the Linux world. And this is just one example. Imagine if you have a headset with included sound card, for example a 5.1 headset. Without Pulseaudio, it is a chore to switch sound to it, with Pulseaudio it is easy and userfriendly. Windows 7 now can do it too. Imagine if a user tries to do it in Linux without pulse, he will be frustrated. Of course, Arch users should be knowledgable enough to switch sound cards in ALSA, but it still is a chore. And it is not the point. The point is, Linux needs a sound daemon to provide modern user friendliness. So it is a matter of time for GNOME and KDE to support it natively. KDE tried it with phonon, but it seems phonon is more problematic than pulseaudio, with less features. At least for me, when phonon sits on top of ALSA, i get all sorts of messages informing me that some interface should be disabled, it is annoying. Plus when i change a sound card, the app needs restarting. So yes, in time pulseaudio should become the default linux api for Linux/GNU, if not already. If there are bugs, they could be solved if all those geniuses bitching about it and use ALSA could be bothered to help a little.

Hi folks, I wonder if somebody could already figure out how to handle file and protocol associations for Chromium. For those who use a DE like KDE/Gnome most probably everything works out of box. There is an article in wiki how to use chromium with no DE [1]. It suggest to use mimeo and xdg-utils-mimeo, but it simply does not work (at least in my case). For those who are interested to read further the details are below. When I click a link pointing to mms:// stream chromium pops up a message that it's going to use xdg-open to handle it. The xdg-utils-mimeo allows to associate a protocol with an application, which I already has done - set to mplayer. Instead it tries to open smplayer with no (or bad) link passed. I've uninstalled smplayer and it tried to use realplayer, I've uninstalled realplayer and now it uses vlc. I couldn't find where that sequence is hardcoded. On a more serious mode now: As the devs themselves said, pulseaudio is optional, unless you are using GNOME, which requires Pulseaudio upstream. There is nothing clearer than that. Go blame GNOME developers. There is something i noticed. Morgan Gandwere is a Debian convert... That explains a lot of things actually. Debian is known to modify every possible package, since Debian maintainers are more wise and of course they know better than upstream developers about upstream software. Debian is known to fork a package when some upstream developer does not accept a debian maintainer's POS patch. Then the package is left to rott and die, since the debian maintainer is not able to develop it. Debian users are used to this mentality. That explains why someone with this background believes that a distribution should modify upstream to fit its maintainers whims. Sometimes there have been packages i wanted that didn't make part of Arch, even though in my opinion they should. For example, libxft-lcd was in community, while lib32-libxft-lcd was not. I asked in the forum to include that too, but instead, libxft-lcd went to AUR also. I didn't bitch about it, i just use AUR and that's it. One can't expect a whole distribution to accomondate his personal needs. So pulseaudio haters, since pulseaudio is optional, the only reason you complain is that you don't want it in extra, you don't want to install libpulse since you cant afford 1MB disk space, and you also don't want media packages compiled with pulse support because of a purely theoritical bloat. Well, you can't expect the distro to remain behind the times and not include proper (optional) pulse support for these reasons. If 1 mb of disk space and tiny bits of memory bloat in executables is such a waste for you, you could recompile those packages, or even better, try Gentoo. I hear Gentoo is really fast and without bloat. After 60 hours of compiling your apps start 5ns faster. Great!

Regarding phonon being dropped, after some googling it seems i was mistaken, what i had read was that Qt framework is dropping phonon, not KDE. But still, i believe it would be sane to drop phonon in KDE too and replace it with Pulseaudio, it is the best choice. No need for 2 sound servers when one could do the trick. Plus, in case someone says Phonon can switch sound cards without the app restarting, everytime i try it Amarok and others crash, so yes, it needs restarting...

Has anyone managed to get archlinux up and running on either a sled drive or a full-sized usb drive yet. Another Linux system I have couldn't even detect the disk drive was in the machine and I gave it my best hard drive too. Slackware has no problem with the drive, but Debian squeeze or an earlier edition of lenny squeeze had problems too.

Well Morgan Gangwere since all of us Arch users understand this greatly important need to play a 13 year game on an 11 year old machine, we should rollback all changes and send pulseaudio in AUR where it belongs. I mean, we can't leave behind every cheap computer user who can't be bothered to buy even a 5 years old used machine, can we? I mean, Linux is about supporting antics isn't it? We should accomondate those needs, because we might lose this kind of user. He might just go and install Windows 7 on his coppermine. I mean, Windows always supported 11 year old pcs, why Arch wont? Please developers, reconsider.

Hi Archers, I have a Logitech Quickcam 9000. It works great under Linux. Suddenly, it seems to have stopped working so great. Hi, LZO compression has quicker compression and bigger compressed file. As the kernel load time is the sum of the time loading the compressed image and the time of decompressing the image, I am not sure if LZO compression is better than traditional gzip compression on a i686 or x86_64 system where CPU is considerably faster than hard disk. However, choice should always be welcomed. The transition is indeed smooth, as least for me. I am just worrying that maybe most python utilities will remain using python2 for a rather long time. Considering the incompatibility in the fundamental print function/statement, I seriously doubt the number of python2 packages that can run under python3 without any modification. Most python programmers are clearly not so interested in the bleeding-edge technologies. That's what makes me frustrated as an Arch user. i did a brief search and didn't turn up anything... any particular reason LZO compression is not mentioned in mkinitcpio.conf? and lzop not included in core? its only a 56k binary :-) looks like lzo2 package in core has the headers and library. i know it doesn't compress quite as well as gzip, but it's also much faster/lighter. worth a mention at least i think. fellow patrons, i am moving my company's in house platforms off of a mix of deprecated soft virtualization solutions like openvz and bare metal installs -- i have decided on using libvirt + kvm (in conjunction with cgroups for qemu and possibly other uses). i'm trying to use Arch for the host/hypervisor setups, for a couple reasons: ) very easy to roll custom initramfs builds ) shooting for a < 128MB 100% in-RAM diskless image (RHEV-H or ESXi) ) host is changed infrequently, and all-at-once (no need for ongoing/stable repo support) ) i'm very familiar with Arch's initramfs setup, and with Arch in general the other possibility i'm considering is Gentoo, but it's been quite some time since i've used it :-/. neither arch nor gentoo will be used for guests (likely debian/ubuntu here). does anyone have any experience/insight here? the comparable technology for RHEV-H for redhat, or ESXi for vmware. i am looking into the `archboot` setup for inspiration on a custom initramfs build system. primarily i'm just look for any pointers/information anyone may find useful, not only on the image itself but also management and configuration techniques. thanks, C Anthony

Hello I want to add extlinux support in AIF. However, unlike grub, where grub-install takes care of everything, extlinux requires /boot/syslinux to be created and some files from /usr/lib/syslinux to be copied to /boot/syslinux. Initially I though that creating a extlinux pkg that would include the needed file in /boot would be a good idea. Needless to say, there is mixed opinion on this. See link for more info: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/21766 So... Is it acceptable for AIF to create /boot/syslinux and copy files from /usr/lib/syslinux to /boot/syslinux? The best would be if every available bootloader would be moved to [core] and supported by AIF, so that the user can decide during the installation which bootloader fits best to him and which bootloader shall be installed, because there's currently no bootloader which can do everything. Depending on the partition scheme and the used filesystem a different bootloader is needed. And simultaneously every filesystem related package incl. btrfs-utils e.g. should be moved to [core] and supported by AIF, too. Also squashfs-utils which is "degraded" to community belongs to [extra] because it is necessary for building LiveCDs as far as I know. You really should reconsider this cleanup. You should consider that such a distribution - and Arch Linux isn't a small and unimportant distro anymore - is not only about some personal preferences of the developers. Developers of such a binary distro should also maintain packages which they are not using themselves. And, btw., funny enough was ding updated recently although it was orphaned. I wouldn't say anything if you would cleanup the official repos from unnecessary, unimportant and unused or hardly used packages like some ttf fonts, GTK1 themes, etc. But there are too many, too important packages in your list which definitely belong into the official binary repos and which are in the official binary repos of every other binary distribution. Hi, our current default wireless framework in base /e/rc.d/network script is iwconfig (Open/WEP only). I like to integrate wpa_supplicant as easy as we could use iwconfig ATM. iwconfig is a useless framework in most user environments in these days (most AP's have a stronger encryption than WEP'), but it is a "easy" tool. Two possibilities: a) Throw away iwconfig(wireless-tools package) from rc.d/network and use wap_supplicant only. wpa_supplicant could of course do all the things iwconfig is for. b) Let the user decide wihich wireless framework. This could be done by seperate /e/conf.d/wireless from wireless_tools and add therin config options for each iwconfig and wpa_supplicant. Ex.: -------------------- #wlan_eth0="iw|eth0 mode managed essid default" #wlan_wlan0="wpas|<wpa_supp options -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf>" #WLAN_INTERFACES=(eth0 wlan0) ------------------------- So /e/rc.d/network->wi_up() has to be modified to honor also wpa_supplicant. For both ways /e/wpa_supplicant.conf should get modified to a cleaner default config (Most comments and examples). We should provide a config file with activated entries for OPEN wlan and WEP connections (User has to modify WEP essid and key), and also a deactivated entry for common WPA2/PSK wlan(User has to modify and activate this for his/her needs). The advantage of using wpa_supplicant at least in addition to iwconfig is IMHO the easy and straightforward integration in our network settings (r.conf and conf.d/wireless). No need for extra packages like Netcfg, wicd, networkmanager to associate to WPA infrastructure (but could be used by users if they want their "funcionality""). What do you think about? But there have indeed been more than one bugs in the past (assigned to one certain developers) which have been closed at once as invalid even if they indeed have been reproducible bugs. And I was relative unfriendly told to give more informations about e.g. possibly affected drivers etc. which I already had given in the original bug report. In the meantime there was another developer who has closed a well known bug report and denied to reopen it with only an inexplicable reason. This bug is still a known upstream bug. Such an inappropriate bug handling happened four times in the meantime. So could this be the reason why the person who you're talking about is angry? Are those not accepted bugs really not downstream bugs? I already started a thread about the inappropriate behaviour resp. bad attitude of some - not all - developers in flyspray in the past. Just ignoring him is not the way to handle it unless you have talked to the person and know that he is just insulting without a reason. Heiko

Hi, I have an archlinux virtualbox guest on windows host. The clock of the guest linux is randomly stuck in a few seconds loop, rendering the system in a semi-freeze state. It looks like this: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/841166/archwtf/date2.png It happens irregularly, sometimes not happens for days and sometimes it does this 2-3 times a day. Any ideas what went wrong or how to debug this properly? There is nothing relevant in dmesg nor syslog. Other linux guests don't do this, I also tried different vbox versions, I do not really know what can cause this kind of an error. I searched and could not find a bug like this in neither the vbox bug tracker nor anything kernel related. I'm open to every ideas, this bug is driving me crazy. -- János

Hi all, I'm the dcron maintainer. I've replied to a few users who emailed me privately, but I wasn't aware of this thread until now. I agree it's ridiculous to have a cron daemon that can't keep time! I'm sorry I haven't been able to keep up maintenance properly. I'm a chronically over-committed university prof who only gets sporadic windows of time to give to each commitment. I think I know where the scheduling problems are coming from, and I will fix them as soon as I can. Part of the reason this hasn't happened earlier is that I started a large code review early this summer, and was interrupted by the press of other duties. Not a rewrite, just a thorough cleanup, but my private git repo is well ahead of the public one. I now have a queue of fixes and tweaks that users sent me (I think one of them is even the very scheduling fix that's needed), but the hood is open and some changes are only half-installed, so I really do need to take a few days to sort everything out. The problem has been finding the time to do that amidst all my other responsibilities. I would certainly understand and could not reasonably object to any distro's demoting dcron to an unofficial package. But as I said, I I will fix dcron anyway, I hope within the very near future. I'll announce here when I believe the git version has the necessary fixes, and if feedback sounds good, will make a new official release. Extra hands might not help right at this particular moment, but they would help the package be more reliably maintained going forward. Guys, After updating to the latest packages in testing (fusion-icon, ati driver, xorg), the compiz splash is corrupt. I don't know if this is the result of xorg, the ati driver or the updated fusion-icon to handle python 3. Basically, you just see a blurry square where the compiz splash should be. I grabbed a screenshot so you could see what is happening. The blur from the eyes of the girl in the desktop is the compiz splash.... It doesn't seem like dcron is maintained very well [1], so I think we should consider switching. FS#18681 [2] is quite a critical bug in a crond when everyone expects jobs to run only once. I'd like to go with fcron because it seems to work very well for most people, has a lot of features while having a small dependency tree. Comments welcome. Hi, Firstly, I want to state clearly that I am 100% supportive to the python3 transition which took part in Archlinux a month ago. I installed libreoffice from extra today to replace go-openoffice. And all of a sudden, python is no longer required by any package at all. I checked the dependencies of openoffice, go-openoffice, and libreoffice, it seems that openoffice depends on python2, go-openoffice depends on python, and libreoffice goes back to depend on python2 again. In fact, the "required-by" list of python on the package website is quite short. Ideally, python2 packages will migration to python3 and the package python will be required again one of these days. I am just wondering if this change would actually happen in the future. When I tried to learn python several year ago, I felt a very strong reluctance from the python community to moving on to python3 and the split of language drove me away. After all these years, python developers are still so unwilling to move on to the new system. I hope python3 won't die this way, so that all the previous efforts in transition to python3 will not go in vain. Maybe we just took the transitional leap too early when nobody is ready except us. There are many of the most important, oldest and best known packages in this list like dia, ding, xboard, eboard, epdfview, slmodem etc. In other words, your list is likely the half of the distro. If you would put all of them to AUR then you could give up Arch Linux, because then it has almost no advantage over Gentoo, that is, then will Arch Linux become a second Gentoo, because the users will have to compile a lot of (most of the) important packages manually. And the reason why I switched from Gentoo to Arch Linux about 3 or 4 years ago after using Gentoo for about 6 years was that I was sick of compiling everything and that Arch Linux was a binary distribution. So if you would really do this clean up and move all these packages to AUR then I could and most likely would switch back to Gentoo. Guys, As a follow up, the post to kernel.org did not elicit any response. The folks at dm-devel suggested it may be a grub bug. So that leave me with two more avenues to try (1) the grub list, and (2) lilo test. I have also kept a running summary of the problem and input from the various lists and I've made it available here: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/Archlinux/bugs/dmraid/dmraid-boot-fail-summar… I'll continue to add to it to capture relevant info concerning the history of this problem. The theory that the boot failure is a result of where initramfs gets placed on the disk doesn't seem like it is the issue. It's not ruled out, but I've created multiple initramfs images, installed the kernels in multiple different orders and the boot failures don't change. 2.6.35.8 & 2.6.36-3 fail, but booting 2.6.35.7, LTS, SuSE, etc. work just fine. Hi all, I don't actually recall when this started happening, but somewhere along the line g-p-m started directly performing a suspend without going through the pm-suspend script. I have some scripts in /etc/pm/sleep.d that are run when I do 'sudo pm-suspend', but aren't run when I do a suspend from g-p-m (for example pressing the 'suspend' button on my laptop). Searching our wiki, forums and the interwebz gives the following:- 1. Member of 'power' group - this is hal-related, in gnome 2.32 is it still required? Regardly, starting /etc/rc.d/hal doesn't seem to help. And I AM in the 'power' group anyway. 2. Check /var/log/pm-suspend.log - This just starts with 'Failed.' without any explanation. It then shows the last four resume scripts (01laptop-mode,01grub,00powersave,00logging) being executed successfully. The next in line is 11netcfg, but disabling that doesn't help anything. Anything else that I've missed? I do have 'hibernate-script' installed, but I don't think its even possible to get g-p-m to use it. The dbus command in the wiki to run suspend has the same effect as g-p-m, ie. does not run pm-suspend.

Hello people, A few months ago I wrote about my hard disk, which was making a strange noise due to excessive head parking. I just added hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda to /etc/rc.local and the problem was gone. Then I found out that whenever I used gnome-power-manager it would set the APM to 1 if the power source is the battery. I didn't find a way to instruct it to leave the APM setting alone, so I avoided using it. Recently I installed GNOME in my box and noticed that even if I disable gnome-power-manager at startup, some piece of GNOME is still setting APM to 1 when the netbook is on the battery. I don't use laptop-mode-tools nor is acpid running which brings me the question: what is messing up with APM? How can I tell GNOME and gnome-power-manager not to change its settings? If that one can work with the X-part of your system - then some rights in your local $HOME directory are broken (.xinitrc would be a candidate for this kind of weird behaviour, but also .ICEauthority or .Xauthority). If of cause the new user account does have the same problems, your /etx/X11 or worse might have wrong user rights. Have also a look i a file called .xerrors, .xsession-errors - or something like that (can't remember the correct name anymore), there could be some hints in it, if it does exist, what your problem is. Guys, To add to the nvidia issues, after update to the latest driver (nvidia 260.19.12-1) the machine stops during boot due to (Invalid video mode, press enter to see list....) Pressing enter then lists the available modes. However, when I enter one of the listed modes, it is rejected and I get prompted again with the (Invalid video mode, press enter to see list....). I don't know whether this is a bug, a KMS thing, or what, but I have never had any problems passing vga=0x31a on the kernel line with the nvidia driver before. (I know with ATI, KMS early is recommended, and no vga= on the kernel line) Is anybody else seeing this? Should I just remove the vga= line? After letting the (Invalid video mode, press enter to see list....) prompt time-out, it all continues fine and the nvidia driver loads without issue. What say the experts? -- David C. Hi all, Have just installed ProfTPD and if I run /etc/rc.d/proftpd start as root it stats just fine. In /etc/proftpd.conf it says to run the server as the group nobody and the user nobody. I am just wondering what system level it's running on? Is the server now running as root or what privilegies does it have to the system? I suppose it is not running as the root user then? Today I updated my desktop which installed latest nvidia - version 260.19.12. When I tried startx, screen went black and the led of the power button of the monitor kept flashing.After I downgraded the nvidia, everything went allright. To be absolutely sure that it is not caused by anything in my system, i installed arch again on to a new partition and installed the packages. Same results. Hi all, I am learning and learning more in Arch linux, but I have a question. There are a few programs that I use and I am not able to find all the dependencies in the Arch repositories, and some of th elibraries are a little old and the developers have .deb packages for them. So my question is if I get a such package, may I just extract it, unpack the data.tar.gz and copy the libraries into /usr/lib? For example, I now need to use pygame1.8 and there is 1.9 in the arch repository. What do you think? Many thanks, Christian

Hi folks, I am running a 32-bit chroot on my 64-bit system, and I'm trying to build a few packages from AUR inside the 32-bit chroot. When I run makepkg inside the chroot, it complains about dependencies not being satisfied, even though the dependencies are installed inside the chroot (and in the 64-bit environment, as well). So I'm wondering why it doesn't find the dependencies. I'd love to get this to work and also wouldn't mind helping with debugging this. I just need a few pointers what I would have to look for. I have emacs 23.2 running in a normal text console and am trying to spell check using the ispell.el facility in the emacs lisp libraries. I also installed aspell and espell-en packages to resolve the binary program to be used by the emacs ispell function. When I do any of the emacs commands like ispell-buffer or ispell-region and the like, I keep getting a message in the prompt line of emacs saying "Text is read-only" The buffer where I am testing this is most definitely not a read-only buffer. I tested aspell out in a normal terminal on a test text file and that seemed to work OK. Do I have to do anything else to get this working right? I did not set up any config files for aspell; I'm not sure if I have to or not. Can anyone help me out?

Hi, The package djvulibre now conflicts and provides libdjvu, and libdjvu disappeared from the repository. However, judging by the files they provide and the PKGBUILD cached in my abs directory, I don't think they are the same thing. djvulibre does not provide the dynamic linked library as libdjvu does and thus may break other application depending on libdjvu. For instance, /usr/lib/evince/3/backends/libdjvudocument.so from evince package links to /usr/lib/libdjvulibre.so.21, which would be removed if I update the system to allow djvulibre to replace libdjvu. What's happened to the libdjvu package? Why is it removed from repository? Should I file a bug report? Best Regards,

I'm glad Arch did the python3 transition and I agree with python3 being the default version (i.e. having 'python' symlink to 'python3.x'). But what's the reason for no longer having a package named 'python3' with a symlink to 'python3.x'? It would make (/have made) the transition a little easier, no? Any harm done in providing it?

I thought I'd try my luck on here, even though this is a rather Gnome-specific question: In the past I've been using seahorse to provide both a gpg agent and an ssh agent. Recently I noticed that gnome-keyring-daemon provides both of those agents. I must say though that it seems to be very flaky. I'll switch back to using seahorse for now, but I'm still wondering why it is that there are two Gnome components with so much overlapping functionality. Hi all. I hope this is the right place for me to raise my issue. After doing a pacman -Syu and then rebooting I noticed that I could no longer start my VirtualBox vms I get the following error: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine My_VM Callee RC: NS_ERROR_INVALID_ARG (0x80070057) Virtualbox then crashes (segmentation fault). I had the testing repo enabled, so I thought that one of the packages from testing might have broken it. So I disabled the testing repo in pacman.conf and removed all testing packages with: pacman -Syy pacamn -Suu I then recompiled my virtualbox drivers and rebooted. But that did not help at all. Dear Archers, With the latest pacman -Syu I am getting segfaults with ssh and mutt. I think the two are related for the following reason (1) Mutt works alright till it tries to make SSL/TLS connection and then it seg faults (2) ssh directly seg faults I think this has got to do with an update in openssl (both mutt and openssh depends on this) although the openssl comman itself does not seem to have a problem Regards ppk

Hi, I recently dealt a lot with my laptops network configuration because I needed wlan for uni. Sadly the free driver for my chip still doesn't work, however, with the proprietary broadcom it works. While troubleshooting the wlan issues I ditched wicd (because it's buggy, even the dev doesn't use it anymore) and went a level lower. As stated before, wlan works at uni and at home as it should, using just wpa_supplicant and dhcpcd, however, I also need wired network at home, and whatever I try it just doesn't work. I suspect the problem might have existed with wicd already, as it worked with static IP, but not using dhcp. Now I try to use /etc/rc.d/network but without success so far. I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 family harddisk of 160gb capacity which is more than 3 years old. recently I installed gsmartcontrol and after running it, it showed number of current pending sector count and offline uncorrectable sectors as -- 4294967295.Fearing the disk going bad, i backed up data and started monitoring it. This is the latest gsmartcontrol shows - http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/5707/201010161300051280x1024.png After two weeks, the no. of bad sectors is the same and the disk shows no sign of failure (at the least there is no problem to read or write files from or to the disk).hence I am confused .is the disk going bad ? if it is fine why can't it remap all those bad sectors ?

Hi all, I just got a bug closed as dup (concerning the python rebuild) because the python rebuild bug did not show up when I searched the package name. Of course, now I realize that I should search with 'search details' on. Would it be difficult to default to having that switch turned on? Would it stress the backend too much (no idea about such things) or require patching which would break on updates? I've also added a sentence to the dup-search section of the bug-reporting guidelines which will hopefully prevent other noobs from making my mistake =).

I know I can install some 3D game or demo and compare FPS, but I need something more focused on basic desktop experience; and must be repeatable with some form of formatted results. Hi, the latest mesa package (7.9) in testing is missing utilities such as glxinfo and glxgears. Since I built mesa 7.9-rc2 myself I noticed that those utilities are not built with the current PKGBUILD. As a workaround, I added cd "${srcdir}/Mesa-${pkgver}/progs/xdemos" make to the build() function. Don't know if there is a better solution. Cheers, Stefano

Hi folks, I've just run into a strange problem. In order to highlight terminal windows that require my attention, I make the application running in the window beep, and I have set xterm*bellIsUrgent:true. The problem: xterm seems to simply ignore this setting. I can also go into the xterm menu and activate/deactivate bell urgency, but it makes no difference. I always hear a beep instead of the window's urgency WM hint being set. I'm almost certain that's an upstream bug introduced fairly recently because I had the same problem on my Debian machine. Does anybody have a clue where to report this bug? I simply can't find a decent project web page for xterm. I was following the discussion about holding back xorg 1.9 because of the nvidia driver, but I either missed the end of it, or it was left open. Do the nvidia and nvidia-173xx drivers in [extra] work with 1.9? If they do work, either or both, are they still plagued by this performance regression (stuff like rendering fonts as far as I can remember). If either does have this performance hit, does anyone know of a target version that resolves the regression? Thanks

Dear arch users, I managed to mount my usb stick automatically via udev rules (hal isn't running). However, if I unplug the stick while thunar is open, the umount command hangs. After that I can't even reboot. But if I close thunar before unplugging the stick umount works fine. Hi archers, I've just made one of my machines an arch box, and one thing that gave me headaches no end was setting up dovecot on it. In my setup I'm using PAM authentication with a passwd userdb. So no reliance on mysql or postgreql. When installing dovecot, pacman informs me that I may want to install some mysql or postgresql libraries as *optional* dependencies if I want to use those backends. Since I don't, I didn't install these libraries at first. After some long debugging sessions, I realized that my failure to connect to my freshly setup dovecot server was because dovecot-auth failed. It was looking for the mysql and postgreql shared libraries that were not installed. After installing these libraries, all was fine. So now I'm wondering whether there may be something wrong with my setup that forces dovecot to at least try the mysql/postgresql backends, which it would need those libraries for. The other option is that I did everything right, and dovecot-auth is simply linked against those libraries and cannot run without them, no matter what the configuration file says. In the former case, I'd appreciate some enlightenment as to what I should be looking for in my configuration to remove dovecot's dependency on these libraries. In the latter case, I'd say a bug report is in order because if dovecot-auth relies on these libraries, they should be pulled in as dependencies instead of being declared optional. Hello, For the past week or so, most of my awn applets have been failing to load (with the exception of the cairo menu, task manager, clock, and notification area). The modules that is is failing to load (pygtk, awn, etc.) are present in /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages. However /usr/lib/python3.1/site-packages is empty (aside from README). My guess is that awn is running using python3, since /usr/bin/python is symlinked to python3. Is there a way I can confirm this? If this is the case, how would I go about fixing it? [arch-general] update to kde 4.5.2 - no sound - tries to remove my devices??

Guys, I updated to 4.5.2 today and on start, kde4 asked to remove all my sound devices. So I chose - 'manage devices'. All of my sound devices are grayed out and the 'default' doesn't work. I looked through dmesg to see if there was anything glaring, but there wasn't. For instance, now I can use the blur effect of kwin 4.5, while I couldn't with classic mesa 7.9 driver. I don't play games, so I cannot tell what is different with games... Maybe we might have an ati-dri package in [testing] that ships r300g instead of r300c... Stefano

[arch-general] Question about pacman and installing Gnome

Hi all, I had to do a reinstall of my machine so I did that and for some reason, Gnome doesn't start proprely. I am visually impaired so I can't see the screen until I have logged into Gnome and started Orca, the screen reader for Gnome. Here is what I do. pacman -S xorg xf86-video-ati xf86-input-keyboard xf86-input-mouse gnome gnome-extra gnome-system-tools Then I did: pacman -S gamin pacman -S gdm I have however got a protocol error so I had to restart some of the downloads above, but will pacman check the packages so that they are completely downloaded? Anyway, I then did: /etc/rc.d/hal start /etc/rc.d/gdm start and I did all of this as root. Then I can read that the screen goes into the graphical environment since BRLTTY and Speakup, the console screen readers tell me that. I wait for about 30 seconds before I login as my user but nothing happens when I press enter after I have entered my password. Have I missed something? This is like I did before. I have added my user to the video group as well as the others recommended on the beginners guide. Any thoughts? Many thanks, Christian

Hello, from time to time I connect my laptop (1280x800) with another display (usually an old 19" at 1280x1024). My preferred configuration is to set both displays to their natural resolution with the laptop display being set to be "left of VGA1". I do this all via KDE system settings. It always used to make the KDE panel and all windows stay on my laptop display, until I grabbed a window and moved it rightwards. However, since a couple of days or weeks ago (unfortunately I'm not sure which upgrade changed this) no matter what I do the KDE panel appears on the external display, so does my wallpaper and so do some of the windows (most, but not all of them). This doesn't really work for me much, does anyone know what to do to return to the previous behavior? Hi Folks, New Arch user here. I really like it! Another Arch user recommended it to me after I started noticing quality issues with another of the main distributions. I'm currently working on a test install to see if Arch will function in a very restricted environment. So far I've successfully installed KDE and configured for a true IPv6 network. Yet to be done is support for Common Access Cards and their USB readers. I've been having issues with pcscd but I'm not ready to ask for help yet. I also tried fake-raid but gave up in favor of the much simpler JBOD (two disks) config. But I ran into a problem installing something called HBSS from McAfee. This is a package for Windows that is nothing more than a root-kit that allows remote administrators to set policy, remove/block programs, report versions, etc. Unfortunately management mandates that non-Windows systems also run it. So McAfee labored mightily and emitted a Java port of the Windows package that gives minimal reporting capabilities for Linux installs. It works on all the major distros but fails to install on Arch due to an RPM dependency. Their install script just fails saying it can't find rpm. The script contains much ugliness and is McAfee proprietary, so I doubt hacking it will be productive. So the question is: can Arch be configured/tricked into an rpm install? The current version that is in the repository is v4.1 so I looked in the PKGBUILD script and I installed the dependencies, but most of them were already installed when I installed the version that was in the repository. Hello altogether Today I ran into the following problem: When I try to connect to an ftp Server via the "connect to Server Dialog" in Nautilus, the ftp Server gets mounted. Unfortunatelly there are no files in the newly created mountpoint. I also looked manually in the .gvfs/FTPSERVERNAME/ Directory and it is empty. However trying to access the ftp-Server via filezilla (an ftp programm), works fine. The exactly same issue comes up, if I try to connect to a Windows-Share. A mountpoint is created, but its empty. Nautilus shows no error message and I have no idea of how to solve this. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance. Benedikt

Hi, I am using pm-utils to suspend-to-ram and suspend-to-disk. In both the suspends my LCD monitor goes black but doesn't go to the "power save mode" i.e the light doesn't turn orange. This happens only in archlinux though. On Windows when i standby (suspend) the monitor properly goes to "power save mode". Also in both the OS I can't wake up from suspend-to-ram by pressing any key on the key board or moving the mouse. I have to press the power on button on the CPU cabinet. I guess theres a BIOS setting to enable that but i can't seem to find it. Please tell me how to solve both the problems. My motherboard model is Biostar TA785G3 HD and BIOS is AMI BIOS. Thanks.

As for me, I didn't even notice, that something changed with 1.8 -> 1.9 upgrade. Everything was working, works and hopefully will be working as intended. From performance demanding things I use mplayer (1920x1080 videos through HDMI on my big TV screen), psx emulator and perhaps something else. No performance decrease detected. I use Lenovo Thinkpad SL500 with Intel GMA 4500MHD.

Guys, In the past I have set up 'dial-in' servers in my home to share the cable internet connection when I'm at sites with no internet connections. This has worked great for years on SuSE. Anyone experiencing any issues with bash-completion for scp? When attempting to scp a local file to a remote machine, and I try to tab complete the local filename, bash just hangs until I ctrl-c. Might be be trying to complete the file on a non-existent remote server or something like that?

hi, I found some strange issue about mount. Question 3: twice mount with same option, why first ro, another rw? ------------------- information abount ntfs mount --------------------------------- Mount options for ntfs iocharset=name Character set to use when returning file names. Unlike VFAT, NTFS suppresses names that contain unconvertible characters. Deprecated. nls=name New name for the option earlier called iocharset. utf8 Use UTF-8 for converting file names. uni_xlate={0|1|2} For 0 (or `no' or `false'), do not use escape sequences for unknown Unicode characters. For 1 (or `yes' or `true') or 2, use vfat-style 4-byte escape sequences starting with ":". Here 2 give a little-endian encoding and 1 a byteswapped bigendian encoding. posix=[0|1] If enabled (posix=1), the filesystem distinguishes between upper and lower case. The 8.3 alias names are presented as hard links instead of being suppressed. This option is obsolete. uid=value, gid=value and umask=value Set the file permission on the filesystem. The umask value is given in octal. By default, the files are owned by root and not readable by somebody else. Best Regards.

Does anyone have reproducile tests that show the problems in Firefox/Thunderbird with cairo when cairo is built with --enable-xcb? I just built cairo with: --enable-xcb --enable-xlib-xcb=no This should leave the normal cairo xlib backend intact (i.e. the same as when built with --disable-xcb). So far everything is working fine for me, but even before, with Cairo 1.8 everything was working fine, so I'd like to doublecheck about those issues. -- damjan

[arch-general] kernel26-headers breaks VMWare and VirtualBox

Hi, I'm experiencing the issue as discussed here on the forums: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=105637 This mentions a bug report at: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/20972 The fix mentioned is to run kernel26-headers -2. I am currently running "core/kernel26-headers 2.6.35.6-1 [installed]" I asked how to get -2 on IRC and was told to wait until my mirror updates. I tried a closer mirror and even manually looked at some of the mirrors and none of them appear to have 2.6.35.6-2. How can I upgrade to -2 without waiting for a mirror update? Maybe I'm misunderstanding what they mean by '-2'? Thanks.

I personally never liked the OpenOffice.org moniker. Always felt like it was too long and just plain ugly.
